hi there...over the years, so many people told me in one way or another that being a book worm is a bad thing. they just vary in the degree and intensity of the way the said it. and sometimes it hurts. i am this way because i find comfort in reading. reading is one way for me to unwind and simply enjoy life. life is busy of the late that it is already a luxury to just curl in bed with a book in my hand.
they say that book worms got their heads too buried deep in fantasy and that they have a hard time with relationships and getting guys to be interested with them.
one thing i can say, i can converse with alot of subjects and can quickly grasp the situation. moreover, it has helped me become proficient in expressing my feelings and thoughts and words.
i hope there will be people out there who will appreciate the way i am....
are you a bookworm? do you experience these too? please your thoughts here... ~ Shiloh

I always thought reading a lot of books was supposed to be good, in fact i have had a few disagreements with people who say people should read books rather than be on the computer all the time, where the argument that i don't see any difference between the two, it is still reading....I think it is great that you can get pleasure from books... [lilaclady]
hi there. thanks for the reply. i guess, it is because kids will be easily distracted with so many visual things online... all the flash game sites... [shiloh_222]
I would consider myself a bookworm, though recently I haven't been reading too much because of time constraints. Whoever tries to tell you that being a bookworm is a bad thing is probably too uneducated to be able to enjoy and understand books. [phoenix25]
I like to read fantasy or sci-fi books. I particularly love the Dragonlance books written by Weis & Hickman. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe series is also one of my favorites, even though it's for kids. I really like Stephen king also, particularly the Gunslinger series. [phoenix25]
I am a bookworm, although I don't spend long periods of time with my nose in a book like some do. My mind wanders to easily for that. I've never really experienced such negative criticism concerning reading. It may be that they are jealous that, in some ways, you are smarter than them because of your love of reading. Reading is beneficial in many ways. You can gain knowledge of practically anything, you exercise and stimulate your brain which will keep it healthy later in life, and you strengthen your reading skills and improve your vocabulary. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, said, "I cannot live without books." It doesn't sound like he thought reading was a bad thing. [dogsnme]
Brainy guys are often attracted to brainy girls. Sometimes intelligence can be hot. [phoenix25]
hi shiloh...there is nothing wrong with liking to read and reading a lot. i don't like to read much, but i respect those that do. it is to our advantage. i don't like the term bookworm. i think that is a very negative word. probably because of the word worm. likes to reads, book lover, is better. you can read and enjoy reading. you're fine. they are the ones with a problem. you keep on reading. [greenglitterturtle]
well shiloh, i admire your love to read, but alas i don't have it. i have read a few books, and i am capable of reading. except for a rare occasion it's hard for me to read a book. i read the bible daily then i read a book about near death experiences. i looked thru a book about UFO's, and a book i don't remember the title but was about sulu on star trek. a book about keanu reeves. usually about true stuff since i see enough fiction on tv and in the movies. [greenglitterturtle]
..oh.. that's not true for me.. of course it depends on how you associate yourself to the books which you are reading.. reading is a nice recreation and can let you travel around the globe even without a penny.. it gives lot of knowledge and information.. it only becomes bad when you become obsess to what you are reading.. [raynejasper]
..well, i do love fiction books like adventure novels and detective stories.. I most like inspirational books.. [raynejasper]
I'm a bookworm -- always have been. I say, go for it! I don't believe you loose touch with reality -- I think reading makes it easier for you to be more aware of other things, other places, other ideas -- and to be more open to different viewpoints. For your friends who say it's not goo for you -- I suggested you tell them not to knock it until they try it. [SamQuinn]
hi there..thanks so much. i am relieved to hear this. how often do you read? are guys not into girls who have a brain ontop of their heads? [shiloh_222]
I am a book worm also. I also got a piece of those people's comments regarding being a bookworm. But luckily, i am able to prove them wrong. Because I learned a lot by reading. And i can socialize still even I spend most of my time reading good books than talking. [izathewzia]
hi there..thanks for the reply. great to hear that!!!! do you agree or disagree that brainy girls intimidate guys? [shiloh_222]
Yes, reading is good for you, and reading is a good habit . but you should know ,they say bookworm not only means spending many time at reading. But it really means you can only reading books and get great score ,but you cann't performance well in other field for example work . you should reading but you also need practice . if you can gain many knowledge from books and you can practise very well in life ,then no one could call you a bookworm . [lily3753]
hi there..thanks for the reply. i am actually developing my social skills and of the late, i am too busy to read anyway.. wish i have free time... hahaha. more free time i mean, since i spend it mylotting anyway [shiloh_222]
it is a good thing to do some reading.books can make us more clever and mature.authors write down their feelings of the world and their lifes.maybe we will not experience the same life but we can picture it in our head through the book. so i think read a lot is right.but the most important is we must use all the knowledge we get.then there will never be people call us bookworms.and perhaps they will be jealous of us being so great! am i right? just do it as we want to do [giantpada]
hi there. thanks for the response. do you agree that reading too much affects our social skills? some people think so [shiloh_222]
I am a self-confessed bookworm and so far, I haven't lost touch with reality.happy You reap heaps of benefits from reading and that's what I enjoy. Through reading, your vocabulary widens, your knowledge increases. Simply put, reading feeds your mind. So I don't see anything wrong with being a bookworm. But yes, there are some people who can't seem to separate their real life from what they are reading. Probably because they can relate to what they are reading. I think what most bookworms must know is when to draw the line between fantasy and reality. Just keep on enjoying it. As long as you know what reading or being a bookworm has done for you, then don't let those party poopers get to you.wink [crazyoverpurple]
I read as often as I can. I read in the bathroomrasp, I read before I go to sleep and I read when I'm not mylotting or finishing an article.happy [crazyoverpurple]
Reading is helpful.Histories make readers wise; poets make readers witty; natural philsosphy make readers deep; logid and rhetoric make readers able to contend. Reading is a good habit.I believe you can find the right friends who appreciate you. [nayiying]
thanks for the response... [shiloh_222]
bookworms are well informed and can do well due to their knowledge ... da problem is when they get stuck wit books all da time ... sumtimes its important to breathe fresh air ... Neways i also read lots n it rocks! [lonelyfloyd]
thanks for the response... [shiloh_222]
Thats not true, reading books is a one good thing I didn't read many books. I'm lazy reading books especially some words ther I didn't understand. Well reading books is good because you learn so much things that you didn't learn from school many things that school didn't not teach unless you read it from a book. [angeltrhix]
I never thought reading can make you like that. I think it really depends on the person. I love reading but it does not make me stucked to Harry Potter's world. But I dont read like everyday, I read only when I feel like to and if there is a book that made me very interested with it. [trishasantos]
Wow!! Some people think being a bookworm is bad? Then how do Authors and Writers get their ideas, if not from reading? I have heard many authors say that Reading is what inspires them. And most people I know who do a lot of Reading are often quite creative in their ideas, and are often intelligent people because of it. I know many people who can never be without Reading, and I would never say any less of them indeed. If you are a Bookwork enjoy it. It truly does broaden your horizons. [KrauseHome]
thanks for the response... [shiloh_222]
I love books and used to be an avid reader but, there just doesn't seem to be time for reading for pleasure anymore. I wish there was. Reading is a great way to unwind, forget problems for awhile and boosts both your imagination and vocabulary. I also think it aids both your memory and comprehension. I do know people who would NEVER pick up a book and they are generally poor spellers who can't string a written sentence together. Books can teach you so much, give you more to talk about and can only help with communicating with people. [Piscesmoon]
thanks for the response... [shiloh_222]
I am a certified book worm..lol the only thing i can see for it to be bad is to our eye sight especially if we abuse our eyes while reading but aside from that i can't see anything wrong with being such..in fact being a wide reader is helpful..you are enjoying at the same time you are learning through the books you are reading. so even if they say being a book worm is bad no one can stop me..hehehehe [kaezy_kulet]
I use to..hehehe but lately i do not have books to read..hahaha but i am interested to buy a magazine and i think i will be addicted on reading it..^_^ you might also be interested it is "kerygma" it is a magazine of Bo Sanchez have you heard of him? he is a spiritual leader and a good writer. [kaezy_kulet]
I really wish I had more time to read. I honestly enjoy reading so much. I just came back from a 5 day vacation where I had no internet and read 3 large novels. With kids, housework, work etc I have no me time to read alot. [Theresam]
What's wrong with reading up alot of books and being a bookworm ? Reading books just provide you with more knowledge ; dont care about what others say but do things according to what's your own preference. [RockStarHobbo]
I don't think that being a bookworm is a bad thing. If you enjoy reading, then read. You said that reading helped you a lot in many good ways, that's very good. I like my students who are readers because I learn from them also. They're smart and expressive. I admit that I am not a bookworm, though I read some books also but not that often because I'm always in front of a computer (LOL). Have you heard of a Bookworm Game? That's what I'm good at, because I play Bookworm (LOL). Am I getting none sense here? Sorry, but I'm just making things light for you. Continue with your reading because that's good. Have a nice day to you... [djoyce71]
Nonsense! As long as you don't let reading take over your life to where you are spending more time reading than living, you are just fine. [irishidid]
thanks for the response. do you like to read? [shiloh_222]
reading is a bridge for us to see the outside world ... not everyone are exposed to the other side of the bridge .. we can stand from our end and see the other side but do not know what is there so do not be upset .. you may know more things than the other person. it is much better than you waste your time at unhealthy places there are pleasures that only you may know and get out of reading the books. they might not even know it as they too have not crossed over the bridge [sanjana_aslam]
thanks for the response. i agree. how's your weekend? [shiloh_222]
I am one of those bookworms but I am certainly not out of touch with reality nor am I living in a fantasy world of my own. I am in perfect control of my sensibilities and happily married to a person who knows that she was married to a voracious reader of books, magazines and materials of just about anything he could grasp his hands on. In fact, I believe many of the myLotters here are bookworms themselves inasmuch as it takes a good command of the english language and a wide reservoir of ideas, subject matters and concepts to enable one to post good quality content and intelligibly respond to discussions here at myLot. So is being a bookworm a bad thing? I don't think so my friend, and you can tell that to the bookworm bashers. [baruchaba]
hi..thank sfor the response..great to hear...thanks for encouraging me... [shiloh_222]
Hi Shiloh, I'm a bookworm since young, and here I am now, in a marketing career, where I get to meet lots of people, and able to carry conversation on most topics, due to the information I get from the books I read. I believe we are old enough not to lose ourselves in the stories, unable to differentiate between reality and fantasy. Reading is a form of entertainment, and relaxation as well. It helps me to de-stress after a hard day's work. And like you said, you acquire knowledge and information from the books you read. So being a bookworm is ! We know how to keep ourselves occupied and entertained! happy [lazeebee]
Reading books is a amazing experience, when I was young, I have a habit to lying in bed and reading novels, off course, the cartoons at the very beginning. I keep this habit until now, I really love it, , reading is better than rattling, I appreciate the people who loves books. My favorate book is Jane Eyre, what about you? recommend some books to me! [flowerescort]
hi thanks for the reply. i would recommend, rich dad, poor dad for financial management. i like stories from the heart series. also chicken soup series. i love going online and read from mentalfloss dot com. hehehe.. i like ecletic stuff. LOL [shiloh_222]
I have never heard that being a bookworn is a bad thing. I can see where it could be if that is THE ONLY thing someone did, like to the point they never go outside or have no other interests. I dont know if that would be healthy physically or mentally. But to read I think expands ones horizon and is very healthy for the mind. I personally love to read too and read at least a book in about a week or two on average and I think it is very healthy for me and interesting to boot! [Ithink]
Well I guess I must be considered to be a book worm then. LOL. Im not sure though if I agree with them that it's bad a thing. I am happily married and I have friends and socilaize so I don't see how they can say that. Oh well Im not worried about it. LOL. I guess there are people out there that always has to critize no matter what it is. [christylynn]
Just want to share with you guys, Bookworm is a cartoon character from the Warner Bros. animated television series Tiny Toon Adventures. He is one of the supporting characters on the show. Bookworm is a green worm with large, oval-shaped,black rimmed glasses and a few black hairs on his head. He attends Acme University and lives in Acme Acres. very good links for book readers http://www.bookwormroom.com/ [linuxtrap]
thanks.. i am going to visit! [shiloh_222]
I agree that being a bookworm can be a bad thing, but I also believe it can be a good thing too. As long as you find the balance between people and books then you are fine, the same with internet and real people. I am not a bookworm, I used to be though. I have not read anything in ages though. I have other things to occupy my time at the moment. [Elixiress]
They say opposites attract. I am a complete bookworm. I like to read at anytime. Sometimes I have my head in a book and if it is a really good one I would not know if a bomb dropped. My husband is not a reader of books unless they are ones with little bits of information in that you can just read for a few minutes and then put down. I think you can learn a lot by reading whst ever sort of book it is. Think of the things you would miss if you did not read books. I would not worry about getting the boys. There are plenty out there who read a lot themselves or will be quite happy that you do. I married a great one. [wanderer086]
My Mom taught me to read when I was 4 years old and I have never quit. I was always ahead of kids in school b/c I liked to read the school books not to mention library books. It never made any difference in relationships or dating...in fact I think I dated more b/c I was able to actually talk to a guy rather than just sit with a blank expression on my face. I had alot of responsibility when I was a kid, at 12 I was helping to raise my two younger brothers b/c my Mom worked two jobs to support our family. My books were my freedom...my wings if you will. In my books I could go anywhere, do anything and there were no limits. I've stepped into the Victorian era as well as the times of pirates. I've walked along with early settlers and felt the pain of wars. I've seen other planets, times and dimensions thanks to the vivid imaginations of authors across the world. I've just recently turned 40 and I still read all the time. Don't let anyone tell you it's a bad thing...look at all the knowledge your gaining. Happy Reading!! **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~ [twoey68]
hi there.now a days, some people lost the passion in reading for some reasons. especially the children because of the influence of media(video games, tv, movies, internet). maybe that's why movie makers are making books into movies just like Narnia, Harry potter etc. to imbibe to the viewers the lessons and values that books could give. reading books is a very good hobby. you learn so much. it widen your perspective in live. the only thing that is bad when you bury your head so much in reading books, you missed the interaction in the real world. there should be a balance. as what you have said some people are too engrossed in the fantasy they are reading, and the bad side effects of this is they become too idealist in finding relationships. i think there should be a balance. [chellymarz]
Wow, that's crazy. I think they are just jealous. Don't let them bother you or hurt your feelings. They're just worried that you know more than they do, and you probably do. [PrarieStyle]
