Do You Consider Reading A Hobby Or A Method Of Learning

I've been into reading since I learned it. I read a lot of articles, stories, tips, etc. It seemed like a hobby, a passion, and a way of learning for me. But I still find people who consider it a hobby alone. Just to waste away their time. Not really to seek learning from it. They don't really choose the kinds they are reading. I also find people who consider it a method of learning. Concentrating only to references that pertains to certain topics. Are you into reading? How do you find it?

I defeniatly consider my reading a hobby--I don't read any educational, factual books...I stick strictly to fiction. Good, scary thrillers/mystery/horror novels. The fact that I enjoy reading immensly just proves more to me that it is a hobby. If I didn't want to do it...I wouldn't...but I love it :) [LilyoftheThorns]
that must be really a funny story [izathewzia]

I consider it more of an escape than anything else. I become so absorbed into a really good book that, for awhile, I can forget about all the stress and strife of life. Although, I will admit, I do learn some from what I read. I mostly read fiction, but I do read some historical novels of early America, and I have gained a really good grasp of writing and describing my thoughts and opinions from all the reading I have done. But mostly, it is an escape. [The_Lamb_Lies_Down]
Same here. I like it when even for awhile we go to places where everything is wonderful. [izathewzia]

i consider reading a method of learning. i read a lot when i am in front of the pc. general information, science and technology and almost everything that i know i will learn something with. my wife has tons of pocket books and i know she reads because that one of her hobbies. so we read for a different reason but at the end of the day we both chip in some of the things we both read mine from the net and her from her book. [se7enthbird]
I think this is the best purpose of reading. To provide right informations. [izathewzia]

I have been reading since I was very young. For me it's a hobby as well as a way of learning new words, ideas and concepts. I don't know about you, but when I read I become part of the story. I can actually visualise the characters and what they are doing. I become so absorbed, that I am not aware of what is going on around me. When learning new words, ideas and concepts, I take these and apply them to my everyday life. I have gained alot from reading. [starlight777]
Hobby and reading can be both beneficial for those who loves reading. [izathewzia]

I got addicted to reading when I was in grade school and my English teacher started giving us book reports. That is when I discovered I had this passion for books of all kinds. From the classics like Don Quixote and Les Miserables to the modern novels released. I never get tired of it. It is a good way of de-stressing and learning as well. If one loves to read - the knowledge that comes with the book follows naturally. Plus you get to have a wide variety of words stuck in your brain. [lovelots]
It is one of the advantage of reading - widening our vocabulary. [izathewzia]

I love to read. Mostly novels, but once in a while i'll dip into a non-fiction. I suppose that means i consider it both! [SparedTheNight]
Both are good. [izathewzia]

Everybody views it differently but in my opinion it is actually both. I am an avid reader for pleasure but it also helps a person learn a lot. So I guess each individual will respond differently. [dbabcook]
Yah, but like you, there are some who enjoyed it both - as a pleasure and learning. Thanks for the reply. [izathewzia]

I find reading serves both purposes very well. Withoutit, you can't really open your mind and eyes to adventure that awaits you. Besides, you can improve your spelling and vocabulary skills all at once. [geminikid]
Yes, it will be nicer if it serves its purpose well- either for pleasure or learning. Thanks. [izathewzia]

Sorry - I have to say both. Even if I am just reading for pleasure I tend to learn things and grow from them. Some of my biggest life lessons I have learned from reading fiction books. Other times I am reading to specifically learn. In fact I would have to say it is hard not to learn. [Trensue]
It usually happens- we learn even we are just doing it for pleasure. [izathewzia]

To me, reading is both a hobby and a way of learning. I read many different types of books. There are books that were written solely to entertain, but there are also others that could entertain and educate you at the same time. I like learning, so for me, educational books are also entertaining. I usually choose books about fantasy and philosophy, two of my favorite book genres. [angelajoy]
it really depends on what you read. fiction would be a hobby. but reading a book on programming would be learning. [kb5000]

I am reading both as a hobby and as my way for continuing my learning. Most of the time though I read fictions, its my way of detaching myself from reality, coz the real world is sometimes overwhelming with all the day to day issues we all are facing and if I want to get away from all of these then the cheapest way is through reading. At other times if i encounter a subject/event/history et al, then I would open books to further give me knowledge on matters that are vague to me. [trelsue]
I am glad to know that. It is always good to learn from what we read. [izathewzia]

I think it is both. Mostly I just watch TV but recently I have started to read a lot. It is my new hobby. I like to read about medical breakthroughs and technological advancement. So I am learning many new things. People must learn from reading. There is no point of reading if it is just for fun and hobby. Hobby and learning must be interconnected in order to maximize our knowledge. [neohimura]
I also like stories about medical findings. [izathewzia]

reading is always a good method or habit to learning something.this rule is unchangeable forever.but the question is you must make a test to prove what the book shows actually i heard about there's someone said that book is not used to read,it should be used to lookup.if someone read books without any purpose,it's hard to say he will learn something from it,reading is an interactive process there's a book called "how to read a book",i make a suggestion and introduction to everyone happy [aprces]
Choosing the topics to read are also important. It should interest you. [izathewzia]

I like reading. Special is a good book. No matter which country. As long as it is translated into my language. I want to read. Haha, I feel not enough time. There are too many books I have not read. I am now accompanied by a book. Taiwan's Chen wrote "San Mao" It's very interesting book. Sanmao whose real name is Chen, Yue-sheng 26 March 1943, Dinghai County, Zhenjiang P rovince, Chinese University's Philosophy Department. Students have graduated in Europe, after the Sahara desert to settle in the West is an island. Her footprints all over the world, her works are also widespread the global community, there are vast numbers of mainland readers, life is very rich in books and translated. Have time to. Dear friends. Time, as you read this book. I know you will like it. [wangjihong350]
So many books that is full of informations. How I wish we could have a copy of those books. [izathewzia]

To some degree,I am an impatient person,so in most cases , I don't have enough patient to read a book. But as book is very important for me , so I have to read it for learning ,.As a result , the most book I read is my text book .So , I am afraid that I just treat book as a method of learning . [dengyl]
Textbook is also a good source of informations. [izathewzia]

i love reading ever since i was a child, i remember reading our textbooks cover to cover... lol. i consider reading a hobby and a method of learning, i dont have anything special that i read. i read everything that looks interesting to me, doesnt matter what it is as long as it catches my attention, ill probably be reading it. [jayrene]
You must be a wide reader. Good for you. [izathewzia]

For me, reading is the best way of removing tension. Yes, i am always tension free when reading any kind of book. It's my hobby. But i think it is also a best way of learning cause we cannot learn anything without readning, may be reading from net or books. [vaishalik]
Reading is also a therapy. It relaxes our body while it serves its purpose- entertaining us and feeding us informations. [izathewzia]

I consider reading both a hobby and a means of learning. I read for pleasure and to learn all of the time. I am not afraid to pick up an educational book or look up information in an encyclopedia or on the web. I read just for pleasure mosy nights before I go to bed though. I do most of my reading for learning during the daytime. I seem to retian more at that time of the day. [lynnemg]
I recommend educational books especially for much younger generations who needs it more. [izathewzia]

I think reading is not only a good hobby, but also a good way to learn. It can be both. The books can always teach us many things. We learn from it step by step. I like reading. I love China [youless]
Reading serves both purposes. And you are right, it provides us informations and so we learn step by step. [izathewzia]

For me it is both, I love to read novels. I also have a passion for research so it is both. [bluehibiscus]

Reading to me can be both. I choose most of the time to read as a hobby, for entertainment, whether it is here online at various sites, novels, magazines, etc. I think that anything you read you can learn from, or at least have the potential. Now that doesn't mean I purposely go about searching encyclopedias and textbooks, because I don't, but that doesn't mean that reading to learn is a lost art. Anybody in school reads to learn, do they not? Parents have to read to learn sometimes, when raising kids, when helping kids with work, when trying to figure out how to well... figure things out. [mommyboo]

i read different kind of book except the worthless one , i like the character lengend and histories book mostly . i consider reading as a hobby ,and it 's helpful .but sometime it's some busy for me ,always my reading hobby is desultory , but i still insit on reading on book per months, it's really good for yourself. thanks [BLOODTYPEO]

It's both for me. I got hooked into reading lately and it's really fun. I get to learn new things and get lots of insights. Among the books that I read are Personal Development and leadership books (most of them are John Maxwell books) and Electronics and electronic communications books for my upcoming professional examination. I never fail to pick and read a book in a day. I have made it a goal to read at least a chapter of at least 2 books in a day and it has been good so far. I got used to it already and I'm doing quite well, even going as far as 3 to 4 chapters in a day if I have the time. I find enjoyment in reading which could probably the reason why I read a lot. Learning though is my main motivation to read, not only learning it by the book but really understanding things (reading between the lines). Reading has never been a waste of time. I stay in my room most of the time and just read and it's really fulfilling and productive because I know that I can really use what I have read and learned in the future. Reading is an investment and we just know when can we apply what we learn. It's like an emergency fund. What we read, learn, and understand is just in our minds and will be used when the time and situation requires. It's a lot better to know many things and be ready when the time comes than cram. [boybato]

I think we learn something from every book that we read whether it is fiction or nonfiction. Of course, we learn more from some books that from others but we are constantly learning even if there is no intent to do so. So I believe that reading can be a hobby (enjoyable passtime) and a method of learning. If a person is reading to learn, then reading to learn IS their passtime and if they read as a hobby they are still going to learn something (whether they want to or not). [dcastle]

Reading is both a method of gaining knowledge and a hobby. When I read I learn new things that I have not been exposed to before. It is a hobby because I decide what to read. I read wide, but whatever interests me most I carry out a research. In this sense, it is a method of learning. It is also a way of gaining new ideas which I can expound on. [in4net6rix]

Reading is a way of life. It's hard going a day without digging into a good book, finding something interesting and intriguing that I didn't know, or getting up to date with events, inventions, studies and findings. Of course I can't read a book everyday, but it's a close thing. I like to carry a novel (poetry/short story) and then a book that teaches something with me. I like my variety. And with the internet and Microsoft Word on my phone, plus my laptop. Well I'm rarely without something to read. [happy_phantom]

like you , i read a lot. when i was seven ,i've read my older sister's books already. i read from textbooks to novels .i read just about anything. it is for me a hobby to while away my time.it is also as a way to learn. it's like getting to places i never will reach thru my meager means.it's learning things about different countries, professions, lifestyle, people, food, etc.it's a very good thing to do ,it will certainly help a person to be well-informed and can be so by reading a lot. [vangie6_1963]

I would say reading is a hobby with the advantage of learning. When you choose the right kind of reading it gives you knowledge. Anyway reading can never go waste as it provides some kind of information to the reader. Some may feel reading novels is a waste of time but i would say it improves your language(the language you read). I love reading be it an article in the newspaper or something informative. I have learnt and educated myself on many subjects with this habit of reading. Children can be encouraged with this reading habit right from their young age so that the habit is enforced giving them an opportunity to learn many things in life. Happy mylotting. [bewitched13]

I consider reading personally as both a hobby AND a method of learning. There are those who stick to fiction books, but I'm pretty open and will read fiction, self help guides, autobiographies, and sometimes, history books. It's amazing how much information is in books sometimes, and I think a lot of people miss out by not realizing this. I tend to read non fiction books during the day when my mind is more awake, and then at night, I like to go to bed with a good fiction book and read for a while before going to sleep. [angelwhispers30]

Dear friend Reading is a hobby is universal truth. You cannot deny it. Same time is a method of learning also. Without reading we cannot learn. Reading is a good habit of learning new thing. Same way lot of fun for my lolter. [rajupaul]

I like reading interesting articles in the newspaper ,the ones which are witty in nature.A few novels with interesting things to learn about and I like reading mythological /fictional books too.Ya so I would say its a method of learning about areas that interest me [chosen9]

Personally, I think that reading can be both a hobby and a method of learning. For me, it's a bit of both. It's true that, depending on what you might be reading, it could go either way, but in my opinion, reading can still go either way. Reading can either be a hobby or a method of learning. [dodo19]

I consider reading a method of learning. As per my view, it is a matter of how you dedicate the service into learning. But still there are people who are using as a hobby and make a novelist and still reading stories. My hobby was reading earlier. [jaggiking2001]

i think reading can be both. if you are reading fiction then i would say hobby and something to keep you occupied but non-fiction is knowledge and learning something new. i have friends who are avid readers and most definitely consider it a hobby. i just do not know how they find time for it as i never really get a chance to sit and read with all i have to do. in the past i have had time but not since having a child. i would rather have the child than the books though. [mikeysmom]

I consider reading as a method of learning. I don't like reading unless it is a good book. I can't just read a boring book. Back in school, we had to read the most boriest books and I would just bomb the book reports because it was like impossible for me to read ! In high school, it is all about English. You fail at English, you fail the class. So many books to read and so many words to study. So that is why I try to read more books more often just to build up on my vocabulary. [yourbetteroffasian]

I would not see it as just a hobby. Reading = learning. They they teach you that school, doesn't mean it can not be enjoyable. [KMlynarczyk]

I consider it both. I like to read somewhat fictional history, like books on the Kings and Queens of England, lots of fact, mixed in with a story. I used to read the encyclopedia, I learned a lot from it, but it really was my hobby, i just like soaking up information. [squiggy]

It is both it depends on what you read. [ellaprice76]

I consider it both, even when I read for pleasure I often still learn things. I think people who don't read are really missing out. I have to read for work and I also learn from that. [magickat]

I consider it both. One of my hobbies is to read novels, but even just from reading romantic and mystery novels, I expand my vocabulary. So it can be both esp if you are the type of person who enjoys reading news and stuff about the world and educational literature. [here2learn]

I consider them both. It is a hobby but as you go on reading, you are also learning. It give us something to do that we really enjoy and we are also rewarded with knowledge. [rayne2008]

Hi, I consider reading also more as a hobby then a method of learning, although I also like to read books about non-fiction subject just to know a little bit more about that subject. So I suppose sometimes I do read in some way of learning, anyway it is a fun way to learn about stuff. [kalinka1]

oh definitely both. but i actually dont read anything that im not interested in, so it means that whatever it is that i read, adds to the things that i wanna learn more about. i especialy love to read classic. right now, reading pulitzer prize winners is my reading project. so basically i always learn something from what i read. thanks for the nice question. [kukaisiton]

I love reading. I just consider it both a hobby and a method of learning. [deathspectacular]

To me reading is a hobby, and at the same time it is a way to learn something. I love reading and I always enjoy a good book, and I would say that I have learned a lot from the books that I have read. I like read non-fiction for instanse books about psychology, psychiatry, nursing, art or history, I have learned a lot from those books, but I also feel that I have learned something frm the other books that I have read (novel and short stories). Reading is a nice way to widen my vocabulary, and I am writer myself so I enjoy to read books by others, especially authors who write in a funny or ironic way. Sometimes great stories inspire me and help me find inspiration for my own stories. My mothertongue is Danish, but I also like to read books in English or German. That way I can enjoy a good story and learn something at the same time. [Porcospino]
