Do You Have To Wear Glasses When You Read

I know a lot of people in here wear glasses. Maybe some of you like me have been having to wear them full time since you were a kid. Or maybe you are like others I know who only wear glasses when they are on the Computer or Reading as well, but are fine without them every other time. For me, I am really Blind without my glasses, but now have a hard time reading small print to where I have to bring the paper close to read it, and sometimes remove my glasses as well. But I also recently found out when I had an Eye exam last month that I now have Cataracts on my eyes that is making it harder for me to see at times for sure. I am seeing an Eye Surgeon on Friday the 24th to see when they will do the surgery on my right eye as well. So yes, I am a little scared, but if this will help me to see, then it will be well worth it for sure. So what about you? Do you wear glasses when you read, or are you one of the Lucky ones and have never had to wear glasses as well? ~~TINA~~

No, I currently don't need to wear glasses for any reason. But I do have family members that do. [DarthJustice]
You are lucky. Hopefully you will never have to wear them as well. I have been wearing them for so long it would be weird if after the Surgery I never have to wear glasses most of the time. [KrauseHome]

Well, I am 44 years old, so I guess reading glasses for me was inevitable. But the only time I do need them is to read. As far as seeing anything else I am totally fine. An odd thing is that if there is direct sunlight on what I am reading I do not need my glasses. Weird, huh? But anyways, I've only needed the reading glasses for the past couple of years. I think once you hit 40 you may as well get a pair, you're going to need them! [cicisnana]
Well, since I have had to wear glasses full time for all things for 38 yrs. now if I had to wear glasses just to read it sure would be a better thing for sure. [KrauseHome]

i wouldnt be able to live a single day without glasses. i'm stuck with glasses the rest of my life. im not sure about laser eye surgery, but i just wear contacts whenever i leave the house and then wear glasses at home to let my eyes breath. i use to be a hassle, but now im use to having glasses im not sure about laser eye surgery, and who is eligible and not. but the success rate is very high and very safe. im sure u dont have anything to worry about [KupoSin]
I have heard that this surgery is quick and has a wonderful success rate, and will probably be getting my other eye done soon as well. It will interesting to see just how good I will be able to see. [KrauseHome]

HI {{Tina}}: Until I became diabetic about 3-4 years ago, I had the most perfect vision ever; Since then I had to get glasses as I could not read the small print either and even after I was on the computer for too long I'd start to get a headache of course even before I went on disability my job required me to be on the computer 100% of the day so I guess I sorta wore out my eyes; I need to go to the Eye Doctor as the glasses I have ( the bi-focals ) need adjusting again for me; I guess that means my eyes are getting worse...(sigh)! Tis always something isn't it?? A lot of people in my family have had cataract surgery, and they all did pretty well after it as far as I know; hope it all works out for you dear lady; keep us posted ok?? [dreamweaverjan]

I have glasses that I am suppose to wear while I am reading or driving but I am currently not wearing them due to my sugar levels being elevated..the prescription that I have was set back when my sugars were normal range so not that they are up and down so much that the eye doctor has decided to leave my prescription where it is instead of switching it all the time and costing me a ton of money. There are some days when my sugars are lower that I can wear them and see fine but on the days that my sugars are elevated they are blurry so I choose not to wear them. I always had 20/20 vision up until a few years back when my sugars started to effect my eyes, and my of the members of my family wear glasses so I felt lucky. My daughter who is seven has glasses and she is almost completely blind in her right eye. We are not real sure of the cause but she has been like this since she was very young. She has to wear her glasses all day long. [froggieslover]

I have been wearing glasses since I was 18 months old.... yeah it's that bad lol. but they have gotten better during my years as a child into adolescence then took a dive, and now they are just plain getting worse... it saddens me to think about it because I know soon I'll be blind :( so I gotta read as much as I can before that happens to me. [Shawchert]

I'm sorry to hear that they found Cataracts on your eyes. I will pray for you that everything works out for you. I only need to wear glasses to see far away. I feel lucky since I'm now in my fifty and when you get older alot of people tend to need bifoculs. I just had an eye exam yesterday and my eyes didn't change much at all the doctor said. So that of course was great news. My father has glacoma so I have to keep a look out for that. I was so nervous at the doctors yesterday because the computer showing my eyes looked different in color so I was afraid something was wrong. Good Luck to you on the 24th I will be praying for you! Let me know if you wish how it turns out! [lelin1123]

No i dont need glasses to read as my eyesight is 6/6 or as you count in USA 20/20. I can read newspaper and here on net even in minute fonts as much as possible for normal human eyes to read. [agrim94]

i am so thankful to god till now i never wear glasses for even single moment.i know my friends with glasses wearing the whole day and it is really hard to wear whole day. it directly effects to headache i think if we wear for long time but one of my friend is now wearing disposable lens and he is so happy now by wearing them.i suggest you try once some disposable lens so that may be you feel compfort.and don't forget to share your views if you will try lens.so best of luck [dreamdua]

I am a person who always wear glasses . I started wearing glasses from my eighth standard . From that day onwards in have been always wearing glasses . While watching tv, while using computer , while reading books etc all the time i wear glasses . I cant think of a day without glasses . [starash007]

My sister had cataract surgery on both eyes and told me the surgery wasn't bad at all. It's a little strange, she said, "watching" the surgery (she was awake, I think that's how the do all cataract surgeries) and she was the kind of person who cried if she THOUGHT she would get hurt. Her vision was practically perfect afterwards. You'll do fine, I'm sure. My vision started going once I hit 40, as it does a lot of people. Reading was my issue. Then, when I reached 50 or so, my far vision started going. I bought two pairs of glasses, one for reading, one for far vision but after awhile it became a pain to constantly switch glasses but I refused to get those bifocals with a line in the middle of the lenses so I opted for Progressive lenses... best thing I ever did! Anywhere I look through the glasses, it's like having perfect vision with no glasses on. My husband just came in and reminded me that he had a hard time getting used to his, so he doesn't wear them anymore. I LOVE mine! One warning to anything thinking of getting those Transitions lenses... if you drive and you want sunglasses, they don't get dark when you're inside an automobile. [mentalward]

I take my glasses off for close up but I wear them to drive, watch tv and just walk around so I do not run into the wall. I could read with my glasses because my eyedoctor gave me progressive lenses but if if am not sitting straight up and holding my book a certain way it doesn't work so well. My mom has had alot of eye operations and today she said she was having a difficult time seeing out of her right eye. She has an appointment on April 30. Since mom is 88 she is getting mighty discouraged with ailing health, hearing and vision. Good luck to you. [muscles4me]

I can see for a hundred miles away but to read the newspaper or a book etc. I need a bi focal-reading glass. Thank Goodness I don't need glasses full time. I don't need them to watch TV drive or anything but yet to read small print and I also need them for computer work. I guess that's what they call far sighted???? [Grandmaof2]

I have been wearing glasses since I was 2years old. I have contacts that I wear too, I have been noticing a difference with small print too. That comes with my age. Good luck with the doc visit for the cataracts. [Polly1]
Its hard at first but once you get used to it, its easy. Once they are on your eye you can't even feel them. [Polly1]

I have worn glasses for reading for about 20 years. When I turned 30 my eyes seemed to bother me a bit when I read fine print. Working at the computer was difficult because my eyes would strain from prolonged viewing of the screen. I got headaches way too often. After an exam it was found that I needed the glasses to improve my eyesight while reading and reduce the strain. Last year I found that I also need to wear glasses for distance vision, especially when driving at night. I wear them when watching television too. [ElusiveButterfly]

Tina Like many people as I have gotten older I need glasses to read. My daughter has informed me that setting in front of a computer screen can cause you to need glasses. I am not sure; as she should have been wearing glasses since high school, but I never could get her to wear them. My best friend is legally blind and uses her glasses and holds the book close to read. She even has to watch the medications she takes as many cause her more sight problems. She has glasses made for her to drive but she has not driven since she got custody of her granddaughter, she says she does not see well enough to risk the baby. [lawana_f]

I have to wear reading glasses - My brother went and got lasic and it was great for about a year and then it went worse - so I guess that option is out for me. Sorry to hear the cataracts - I hear they can do great things now though. [Trensue]

i have to wear glasses 24/7 since 7th grade...unfortunately in jr. high n h.s. i didn't think glasses were cool..so i strained my eyes more not wearing them...n my rents refused to buy me contacts (back then they were cosmetic so more expensive since ins. wouldn't cover them) now i wear them all the time and i have contacts but i actually hate putting them on. i'm near sided which means i can't see far away and i have astigmatism...someday my hubby said he'll allow me to get laser eye surgery...can't wait! [mgmagana]

I think I was in second grade when I got my first pair....so I have to wear them for everything. Like you I can hardly get out of bed without them....so I have to wear them all the time. I am about due for new ones....I am not looking forward to that! [jillhill]

Been wearing glasses most of my life, for long distance. Now I wear progressive but can still read without them. But I think too much computer reading will probably make our eyesight worse. And these days we spent so much time on the computer. Hope all goes well with your operation. [1hopefulman]

I have worn reading glasses before, but they didn't help me enough to continue using them. My husband wears reading glasses, and they seem to work for him. For me, I just use larger print, or sit closer to the computer screen or book or newspaper, in order to do what I need to do. [danishcanadian]

Yes, I do have to wear glasses but just to read. Otherwise, I am fine. But I have learned to carry them with me when I go out so I can read menus in a restaurant. Also I have recently discovered that I also need them now to read price tags on things in the stores. HMMMM..maybe I should leave them home when I shop!lol [sandymay48]

i start wearing eyeglass since i am in high school. now i am 30. i am near sighted i cant read letters or recognize images at the range of 2 to 3 meters from me. its hard especially at night when it is too dark. now even im reading or using the computer i always put my eyeglass. this is better this one. once i also tired using contact lenses but my eyes got irritated. [roselynm1023]

Hi Tina, I have to put on my reading glasses whenever I read, even if I could read clearly without any difficulty without the pair of glasses. If for a short it's okay, but if I have to do more than 20 minutes of reading I usually will put on the glasses. I will suffer from migraine the whole if reading or watching tv or working on computer without using glasses. I couldn't stand the terrible pain of migraine. I hate taking pain killer, so prefer to put on my glasses before doing reading and doing any other things that need lots of eyes contact. Happy posting happy [lkbooi]

not always. i am near-sight eyes.so i will wear my glasses when i watching tv or go outside.but reading, i think i can see clearly without wearing my glasses while reading haha [babyorchid]

Yes,I need to wear glasses when I read somethings.I have being to wear glasses many years.Best wishes. [rainwater]

Well, for me i'd belong to the group that wears them sometimes when i need to see the board in class (most of the time) or just see something really far...Besides that i'm pretty okay without glasses on, i can still see letter and numbers from a distance...I don't know why but my siter warned me not to wear my secs all the time because if i take it out after a very long time, my vision becomes blurred..so i just wear whenever i'm studying, and when i want to see far..Wearing specs had never been comfortable for me..hehe..^_^ [mira91]

Hi Tina, this is usual the doctor told me that when a person is nearing his/her 40 there occurs problem that the close things do not become as clear as the distant things. Until today I am with my plain glasses but I know I have been having problems reading small letters. Very soon I am going to get the reading glasses or else my eyes would further deteriorate. [krajibg]

I have two eyeglasses, one is for short distance and the other one is for the far distance. I am a near sighted person so things are clear to me when its near so I don't wear glasses when reading except that I am using a computer to protect my eyes from its radiation because my eyes feels more tired if I am not wearing glasses if I am infront of the computer. I use my other eyeglasses when reading road signs or advertisements on the road. [sophie_dfuss]

No ive never had to wear glasses, most of my family do and hate it. Their constantly loosing them, many have tried contacts but i think the whole idea of keep messing with your eyes makes the idea a mere memory. [cheersbigears]

I am so sorry to hear this information for you . My eyesight are very perfect and I could not need to wear glasses .I think everyone should protect their eyes via the correct stytles for reading or every chance using your eyes,or else you would suffer this miserable things [liuhaiying918]

I don't have to wear glasses when I read, only when I look at things far away, like when I watch TV or drive. [kellys3ps]

My dad had the surgery a few months ago. He said it was a piece of cake and doesn't even need his glasses anymore. He has had really strong glasses up to now. I do wear them to read and drive. [Thoroughrob]

Hello KrauseHome, I think I am one of those lucky people. I am almost 37 and I don't wear glasses. My eyes are still good and I can read clearly every words and sentences. I consider myself as lucky as I have a bad eating habit. I don't eat vegetables at all and only depend on fruits. [gr8life]

I wear glasses all the time unfortunetly. Until I was about 16 I was far sighted, could see really far without them, then my eyes changed and I can barely see without glasses. For awhile though of course I did the I lost my glasses or they broke thing lol, until I got a little older and realized I could see better without them. Still hate wearing the things though. That really sucks about the cataracts, I hope the surgery goes well when you have it. [darkjedi]

I have to wear glasses all the time in order to function. Otherwise everything is a blurry mess and I am useless....well kinda [taface412]

I've had to wear glasses 24/7 since I was three year old. I had cataracts in both eyes. If it was not caught in time and not done, I surely would have gone blind. [trekkiemelissa]

I have never worn glasses. I have never needed them and so far so good with my middle-aged eyes. I hope I will continue to have good eyesight for many years to come. [Canellita]

Up until a few years ago, I didn't need reading glasses. I guess I've just had to surrender to the 50+ thing... [ElicBxn]

One of the terms of service for MyLot is that you will post in English. [GardenGerty]

I have worn glasses for over fifty years. I have blended bifocals. Sometimes if I have spent a lot of time at the computer, I have a hard time refocusing for distant things. I wish you all the luck on your cataract surgery. My dad found it to be a real blessing, and not a bit of trouble. Aren't you a little young for cataracts, though? [GardenGerty]

whew NOPE. and i hope not even in the near future, i cant imagine myself wearing glasses. hehehehe [carrine]

Everyone in my family, down to my second cousins and great-great-aunts, wear glasses. For some crazy reason I haven't had to yet, but I feel the time is drawing near. I get the feeling that my right eye is not quite as crystal clear as it used to be. Good luck on your surgery. I've heard great things about it from a lot of people. [harmonee]

I got a myopia of my eyes when I was in middle school, and I can not be without it now. it is not a good feeling. so we should tell everybody to protect and love his or her eyes. [jackhpan]

I currently wear contacts and glasses. Usually contacts during the day and my glasses at night. Although, when I crawl into bed at night to read, I need to take my glasses off before reading. It makes reading and seeing the book easier. [Jennlk84]

I'm one of those who have had to wear glasses off and on since I was a kid. I won't bore you with the whys and wherefores of the off and on bit, but I've had to wear them continuously for about the past 20 years. I recently got a new prescription. The doctor gave me the good news that I have the beginnings of cataracts. He said not to worry about it. Everyone gets them, if they live long enough. He said that some progress fast, and some are slow. If I have the slow kind, I may never have to have them removed. He also said that if and when I have to have my cataracts removed they would insert a lens that would correct my vision so that I can throw my glasses away. That sounds almost too good to be true. [bellis716]

I wear both contacts and glasses myself. I have needed eye glasses since childhood. Let us know more about your surgery I hope if you have it that it helps your eye sight. [Shaun72]

Yes, actually i have to wear my glasses all the time in order to see clear. My glasses are the first thing I put on in the morning when I get up. Without my glasses things are real blurry and hard to read. I been wear glasses since i was about 8 years old. [MizzLadyB08]

Oh, I will pray to God that you get a successful eye surgery my friend. For me I am suffering from Glaucoma and I am on treatment. I am being told to wear glasses for 24X7 but I still feel that my eye is getting worse every day. So, I think I need to go for a operation too very soon! [sanuanu]

i am 47 years of age and i only started wearing reading glasses when i started staying on my computer screen a few years back. well, it also comes of age, hehehe. as for your surgery, do not be scared it is a very simple procedure. they will run through some test to see if you have any contra indications to some medecines then they will schedule you for the surgery that would only take an hour. the procedure goes like these, they will anesthezise you then they will place a millimeter cut on your iris, on the side then insert a soft lense inside and viola! you will be given medecines to heal the wound and you have to wash your eyes 3 times a day with an eyewash and you will be instructed to wear a protective eyeglass for a month. if you need to do it on the other eye you will have to waut for another procedure, i know these because my mom had this procedure done on both eyes. it only cost us less than a thousand dollars on both eyes. it's gonna be a breeze. [tigerdragon]

Yes i have to wear Glasses when i read.My eye sight point is -3.25 and i cannot read properly with out wearing Glasses. I don't think the peoples who wear Glasses are unlucky.Iam too lucky . [chimrani]

I wear glasses all the time, but when I am reading a book I could probably get away with taking them off. I can see ok up close. I just cannot see far away. I normally don't bother taking them off though since I would just have to put them right back on. [lilybug]

glareyeah, i have to,just like you, i need glasses full time, i would be blind without them,so sad and painful thing to me! I am jealous to have a sunglasses, you know, i think it is cool wearing them in hot summer, but i give up for my so near-sight. OMG, give me a chance more,i would take good care of my eyes!rasp [sinokirin]

Yes I do have to wear glasses when I read and when I watch TV too.happy [balasri]

i wear glasses for seeing the far thing like word in billboard but not in reading..i can see perfectly word in book but not in word in the air like in airplane..i have eyes problem in watching or reading words on far sight things.. [fasyahime]

Im sorry you have cataract.I only began to wear glasses in early April. My right eye has really bad vision while my left eye enjoys good vision. The may start when I was in junior high school when I used to read story books in bed.My right eye has been " lazy" for years.I didnt realize the seriousness until I had eye test for driving license in March. So I thought I need a pair of glasses in case I cant see clearly.Thank God,there's nothing serious but myopia.I dont have to wear glasses when reading or using computer unless I want to see very clearly.I dont like to wear glasses and dont want to rely on it. [sweetyethot]

I wear glasses all the time because I am short sighted. The bizarre thing is that now that I am getting older instead of requiring glasses in order to read I can do so by not wearing my glasses at all; so whenever I open a book all I need to do is remove my glasses and I can see just fine, it' weird! If I wear contact lenses the situation is reversed and reading glasses are required. Go figure! confused Good luck with your surgery hope all goes well! happy [paula27661]

Oh dear, that sounds like me. I had to wear glasses from an early age and now, without them, I can hardly see myself even in the mirror. Once I needed to change my glasses and I went to the optician, she tried to get me to read those writings on the wall, I couldn't see any and without thinking, reached for my glasses so I could see. She was amazed and told me I had become a slave to my glasses. She introduced me to contacts, but I just couldn't handle them, so I went back to glasses and now my lens is so thick. I've heard people who've done cataract operations, they have no horror stories, so Im sure it will work out just fine for you, probably for the better. All the best! [crasks]

I am really nearsighted and have worn glasses for almost 20 years. Because I'm nearsighted, I've always been able to see better up close, but in the past few years I've noticed that I really don't see well at all with my glasses on for reading and other up close activities! The last time I had my eye exam I thought I might need bifocals (I'm 41), but the doctor said not this time, but probably next time. UGH! But at least I won't look so silly with my glasses in my hair or hanging off of my collar while I'm reading! (And I read a lot) Years back I considered trying to get the Lasik surgery that corrects near-sightedness, but I never did it, and now I am glad. Several of my friends who had the surgery when they were younger are now having to wear reading glasses as they have aged. I am so sorry to hear about your cataracts. I don't know a lot about that surgery, but it seems like I have heard that it's easier on the patients now than it was a few decades ago. I hope that everything goes well for you. Take care. [tentwo67]

Yes Krause, I use my reading glass for surfing, reading and like such delicate activities. Take well care of your eyes! Thanks for this nice discussion and have a good day! [Mitraa]

I do not, but I am near sighted. I am also only twenty three so it is not a problem yet. One day I may have to. I used to have to wear glasses all the time in high school but I had to take them off to be able to read small things up close. I lost them now and people say I really don't see well far away…but maybe I made up for it with the close up stuff. [csrobins]

I have been near sighted all my life and so I have had to wear glasses all my live, now I do need to wear glasses to read but I just don't wear them, I know I should be I don't. I need to be checked for glaucoma, I might have it now too. [winterose]

Well, I am one of the lucky ones. I have a 20/20 vision. Last year, I had my eye check up; nothing was wrong. Just last January, I visited an opthalmologist because of frequent headaches. The result was it's because of stress. I don't want to wear glasses. If necessary, of course I will. [don_naces]

I used to wear glasses all the time. Not because I can't see anything without them. I just don't wanna get into the trouble of looking for them when I suddenly need to see something clearly, like when I am reading. Before I lost two pairs of glasses and crashed one. But now they are all safe since I don't take them off my nose unless I go to bed.^_^ I once tried lenses but they were not comfortable to wear. Those never had to wear glasses are lucky but wearing glasses is not that bad actually. When you take off your glasses, you will see something those people can never see all through their lives. The moon becomes bigger and the starry sky is ten times beautiful as it is in their eyes. The sunshine through leaves become wonderful too. You may try it sometime. Think about this and enjoy your life. Take care, Tina. [CornicSoup]

Absolutely right. I wear glasses while reading. But when I consulted my doctor he told me that i may have to wear for a few more years and there may not be a necessity to wear later. But I doubt that very much. Once we begin to wear glasses we cannot dispense with them! [cudamani]

I have to wear glasses to see anything far away, like reading or while I am at the computer. I have several different glasses cause I like to be able to change my look with just my glasses. Plus, my glasses help me see a whole lot better. Good luck on your visit with the eye surgeon. [cortney09]

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who has never had to wear glasses at all. I have pretty good eyesite so I hope I don't have to wear specs ever. [gitfiddleplayer]

No my friend I have never had to wear glasses. My daughter has to wear these and she hates them. She has also been known to wear contacts. I think glasses are cute on some people as well. [giftsandbagscom]

Hope your cataract surgery was successful, as well as any other surgery that was done to improve your eye sight. I use reading glasses only. But discovered that the glare from the computer screen make my eyes to tear a lot. So I found out that the light of the screen is too bright for my eyes. So, I obtained a pair of slightly tinted reading glasses, which took care of that problem, period. You can also obtain a special computer screen to protect your eyes from the glare. Maybe you should also check out if your PC/Laptop screen's glare is not too strong for your eyes. But, rather, also, get professional advice on this. Enjoy your reading and blogging further. [wsamboer]

Yes i am one such person who wear glasses . And i wear my glasses mostly all the time . I wear them during reading and even while using computer. [starash007]

I wear glasses all time. But i cannot consentrate on studies by wearing glasses when i read. So from morning is wakeup and till night i wear glasses but when i study for exams i don't wear because i cannot consentrate on studies [chimrani]

i used to wear glasses because i can't see far...when a person is coming infront of me i cannot see them clearly lol..but that was before i broke my glasses years ago and well i did have it repaired till now...but i got used to my eyes..still blurry..but i have no plans of wearing it again... [jazel_juan]

I guess i'm the lucky one that not wearing a glass to read or see, i never make any exam about my eyes, but i guess it's already -0.5 doh but it's just fine without wearing of it, humm i once hear from a doctor, an eye surgeon action is not important things to takes unless you feel it is important to do, after the eye surgeon, the doctor will give the patient somekind of water drop medicine for the eyes, you can't leave the eyes dry, but i guess it is important for you to do, i'm praying for your recovery happy PS : eating carrot will help eyes keep healthy [maxilimian]

yes I have to wear glasses as well, for reading and driving, I just got my eyes rechecked and am getting new glasses soon. Yeah..I have been without for a while cause mine had been broken.. :( [Tikvah57]
