If I read a library book and I really enjoy it I tend to buy a copy of it. I might read it again one day but it feels lovely to own a book that I really love. I find it challenging to send books to the charity shop. My book case is full so I have to have a clear out from time to time.
Do you keep the books that you most enjoyed? Why? Why not?
Do you borrow any books from your local library?

I just wished I had a house big enough to have my own library.I love all my books and keep them close to me.So I have boxes and boxes of books. So yes I keep all the books I read. One day I will end up giving them to the library... [PoetryPose]
we dont have a local library here, and i wish we had one... but i do love reading, the only time i can read is when i buy books, most books are expensive here, and most of what i buy are used ones. yes i keep the books i most enjoyed because i have a habit of reading them all over again... those that are not my favorite, i give away or donate also... I have lost count of how many bookcases that I have. I think I have ten or twelve but that is because I am in my fifties. I love to use the library because this gives me an idea of what books I should add to my personal collection. I have a few fiction books that are absolute favorites but most of the books that I have are ones that I use a lot. I have found that if I pick a subject and then read extensively on that subject, the truth starts to slowly emerge. I have books on natural health, natural childbirth, child rearing, marriage, medical terms and terminology dictionaries, education (anything you could imagine), religion, art and drawing, architecture, home improvements, encyclopedias and dictionaries, etc. One of my favorite bookcases are the books I collected for my children while they were growing up. These books came from garage sales, friends, and the bookstore. When I tried to give them away, there was great objection to the idea. It is a part of our life and each book holds many memories of time spent reading as the children grew. Concerning the books that I have studied or use as reference, I like to go back and look up certain information. These books I highlight and then write a few words in the margin to remember where I read a certain concept. All in all, I do give books away but most I still use. I find that most of what I have read can help others in many ways and from that I have spent time in writing on different forums from time to time. I think that someday it would be wonderful to have a room in my house designated as "the library." I would love to have a large table with comfortable chairs and a few computers. I would love to invite people in and allow them to also read some of my books. [sysdexlicwriter]
Hi Maxine, I almost never use a library now. My brither and mother buy just about every interesting book that comes around and I borrow from them. Many of my friends give me books as a gift for my bithday too. I have lots of books and there are some that I won´t ever read again. Perhaps I should give them away. But there are others that are very important to me and I read them over and over, always finding something new in them. Those I have kept for decades and I even love the worn out look they have. Hug! [marguicha]
I'm like you! I borrow from the library and if I like it I'll go out and buy it. I usually buy books that I know I'll read again. I love owning books, especially in hardback. I usually keep the classics like Gone With The Wind and buy trilogies (LOTR) or series (HP). I'd rather hold a hardcopy of a book in my hand than listen to it on cd or read it on the internet. [littlebeansprout]
Hi maximax8, I love books and I used to read quite a lot befor I leant to work the computer, I hve lots of books everywhere and never went to the library but bought everybooks I have. Tamara [tamarafireheart]
There are times when i remember the books that i borrowed and read in school... and now that i want to read them again... i can't because i don't go to school anymore... and the public library in my area doesn't have a good or wide collection... so nowadays... i prefer to buy the book so that if ever i want to read them again... they are within reach... [aseretdd]
i am like reading and i often borrow some books from our local library,i won't buy book at every turn when i went to the bookstore, but i would like to buy the book which i read it many times, for this kind of book,i would often turn over and would put it bedside the pillow. [chingmerry]
I usually buy the books that I really want to read. And after reading, expect me to put it on my cabinet. It is an investment you know. hehe! And gives me fulfillment too! I really love collecting books! Happy MyLotting! [CMTS_87]
The last time I moved,I gave away a lot of books because I don't have a lot of storage space where I'm living now. But I kept favorites, classics, and books that were given to me as gifts. There are some I do like to re-read. They're like old friends! I go to the secondhand book store usually and swap out books. We do go to the library once in awhile, too. [AbbyS1]
Yes. I buy books that I like most, for the pleasure of reading and keeping it for some time so that I can cherish the memory of the characters in the book. Later on I will urge my good frinds to read it and if they want, lend it to them. Most of the times, they may return it or may not return. However, I like the characters so much, that I feel like sensing the taste of the sweet I have just tested. [Sugan_241181]
I keep all my books that I read. I would rather purchase them from a bookstore, than go to the library. I treasure the books I read, so I don't want to return them. What I don't like are those who ask me if I have a good book to read, and want me to hand them mine, because they don't want to waiste money purchasing one for themselves...and then they never return them. So as selfish as I sound, I no longer tell people what book I am reading, and if it's good. If they want a good book, they should purchase one themselves. Ain't I awful? [Sweetchariot]
I do this,Now I was often looking for the news of books that saled well online.then once I decided the one of most popular,I would go to the bookshop to get one.after I read it I used to put on the bookshelf and kept it.why do this?I just think that the best sellers should be stocked for years.well after some years my sons, doughters and grandsons will find these books and read again.then I will really feel proud.because it is wealth. [gxyywhyzy]
I prefer to only keep books that i really enjoy. And the books i enjoy after borrowing, i immediately buy from a book store so i can support the author in the hope they may make sequels. [NumNumy]
I tend to only keep the books I've enjoyed the most. Ones I can define as "really likes" and "favorites". There's no point in owning things I won't want to read dozens of times over. I like to barter things for them online, or find them at library book sales. I do borrow books from the library, but typically only things I haven't read. [xParanoiax]
yes,I always want to have a copy of books that I surely enjoyed. but due to the crisis I don't have a chance to have a copy of some of my favorite books. [chezkalangi11]
No I don't usually keep the books I enjoy or the ones that I don't enjoy because I would probably not read a book twice unless I had nothing else to read. [Bazerk]
I haven't been in a library to read a book, instead i am in the library to read encyclopedia and dictionary. If i read a book and i feel it is interesting and informative then i keep on reading it if ever i have time to read. If it is not my own book, then i prefer to remember the title and author, then i keep on National Book Store during sales then buy one. [glesil_00]
Well i love all my books i wish i could keep all my b ooks because i buy them with a lot of pain, but many times i give those books to my cousins which i read and i did not like them. But the books which i like i keep them and also i read them second times when i am running out of a good book and dont have enough money to buy the new ones. [Archie0]
When I was a student, I ever borrowed a book from the college library and I liked it this book lot. But I had to return it although I liked this book. I was glad that later I was able to buy it from a bookstore. I love to own something that I like:) I love China [youless]
hi maximax, how are u? yah i am a book lover and learner also. i have a huge collection of books. i have to read books due to my study, so i read books which are not interesting at all but all are treasuries of valuable knowledge. i often borrow books from my college library( i am a lecturer). when i was a student then i often visited our district library and read a lot. now it is my habits to collect my books of interest. thanks. [shibham]
i love my books and can not imagine giving them away. My husband is always telling me to go through them and give some away but I can not bare to get rid of any. i tend to read books over and over. Some of my books are over 25 years old that I got when I was a teenager and can not even fathom getting rid of. I just wish I had more room for the books. [foxrocks]
I own THOUSANDS of books, I mean, the only time I ever counted them we had over 3,000, and that was about 25 years ago, and while a few have gone away - some of my horse books went to a co-worker's horsie neice - I did keep probably half of them, and that was only a small part of my book collection. [ElicBxn]
I certainly try my best to keep a copy of the book which I enjoyed reading. I will try to purchase a copy of my own. Or if the book is not available in the market I will try to find it on the pavement. [cudamani]
I used to keep books however now I decide it is not too wise to do so. I have problem discarding them when the cabinet can no longer house them. I prefer to borrow and keep the book at the library. At least it can be shared with others :P [whyaskq]
Ok, I have a system. When there is a book I want to read I follow this process: Look for it at the local library, if they don't have it I check booksfree.com(subscription book rentals), not there? then I check paperbackswap.com(u have to join, it's a book trading site), if and only if those places don't have the book I want or I am just deperate to read it right then I will buy the book. Anyway, to answer the question I have kept books that I enjoyed over the years, but I have started to trade those books with other people so that I have a chance to read something new without paying a lot of money for them. I always call myself a book addict because at one point I was constantly buying books before I ever read the ones I already had. I have to train myself now not to browse book aisles or bookstores because I will definitely buy at least one book if I do. Every room in my house has books in it. Sad, but true. The reason I have my system now is to keep from spending so much time and money buying books. It has actually saved me quite a bit of money. I was spending up to $60 a week buying, now I only pay for my booksfree.com subscription(less than $15.00) and when I use paperbackswap.com I only have to pay for the shipping fees. Sorry, I always babble:) [sam1slim1]
I often borrow books at the library and when I find a really good book, I often buy my own copy, so that I can read it again later. I have a collection of books in my home, but I often give away old books to charity. I only want to keep the books that I really like. Books that don't mean a lot to me and books that I don't want to read again I usually give away. I tried sell some of my old books a while ago, but I could find a shop that were willing to but them, so now I just donate my old books to charity instead. [Porcospino]
Yes,i like to buy the book i really really enjoy and like too.I never borrow book from my local library because i dont like to go to library too much.It has many difficult thing to do if i borrow a book from my local library. [hanah87]
Anyway, reading is a good habit I think. Either buying in bookstore or borrowing from libraries is good way. The most important thing is what we learn and enjoy, not what way we use. But I believe the feeling of owning favorite book is very wonderful. And I enjoy the process of buying my favorite book very much. [xingxingsky]
I have certain authors that I always keep. I like to pass my books around with friends though. That way we can all sit down and talk about them without having to buy our own copies. I guess it's our own little library system. [xoxcharityxox]
I am ,too! For instance I ve read HarryPotter for a lot of times at bookstory. But I can't help buying it and read it every a few months. So it is with me when i bump into some movie I really like,\. HAPPY TODAT! [CHORES]
I check out books at the library, but I also buy books at the warehouse book stores. I tend to keep the ones that I like best as well. I have even started reading one again, that I just finished reading in March. It inspired me so much, that I think it will be well worth my while to read it over once more. Sometimes I sell my used books on eBay. I have a few that I am thinking of listing on there again. I don't usually get much out of them. And sometimes I miscalculate shipping, so I end up breaking even. But it's fun for me. Hope you have a great week. [kykidd]
I hate to get rid of books, too. They are among my most treasured possessions. I have lots but I still get four books from my local library every three weeks. When we decided to move house 2 years ago, I sorted out some that I could bear to lose and put them for sale on the internet. Some went but I still have some of them in a pile in the spare bedroom. We haven't moved yet, but expect to within the next two months, so it's book sorting time again. No doubt the charity shop will benefit this time. [jakill]
I enjoy reading books but sometimes i find it hard with my self .. why? because sometimes i dont find my self enjoy reading it... i have to alternate it with something that can make me feel better sometimes in life.. i dont like to stick always in reading more in books. [mariaglenda]
If it's a book but one of my favorite authors, I keep them. I might read them again, especially if I've run out of other books to read. As for the other books, I usually wait until I have a lot to take to a store that buys books and then resells them. It's been several years since I've been to the library. We've moved since then and I never registered with the library in the new town. If it's anything like the last library, it could be disappointing. There wasn't much to choose from. Someday I'll have to check it out. [Reesers]
I can't take books to the charity shop either - but we are intending to retire and move to another state soon, and I realise it will be silly to take all the books I have. We have several large bookcases full - plus a wardrobe in one of the bedrooms - not to mention all the children's books our four children owned, which are still here at home. I'm going to have to cull out my favourite authors and work out which ones I'll really want to read again one day, otherwise we'll need two removal vans instead of just one! My husband is not a reader, and is puzzled as to why anyone would want to keep books - he only reads technical information or factual accounts - never fiction. I haven't borrowed books from the library for years. When our daughter had ballet lessons, the other kids and I would visit the library while we were waiting for her - but I don't go to that part of town anymore and prefer to buy books. [guybrush]
Yes I always keep books - In fact I once bought a book forgetting I already owned it!! Doh! I do have lots and lots and also struggle to give them up - I've probably only ever got rid of about 10 or so! x [frankiecesca]
I always re-read books that I enjoyed - several times . |So yes, I tend to buy a copy ... well often 3 copies. I'll explain: I buy my first copy usually in english, because I'm here, and it's the official language and the easiest to find a copy in the first place. Then if I really like it, I tend to find a copy in portuguese, because it's my first language, I might have missed something. And then if I can read in the original language of the author I will get it as well, because a lot of things can be lost in translation LOL Why do I go trough all the trouble? Well, it's worth more times than not. I really enjoy reading the same book in different languages, some things come out a bit different. Of course since I tend to re-read each book that I like, more than once, I can easily find books in french or english in the library, but other languages can be a bit more complicated. [arkaf61]
I always look for the sell-good books on the line and I will buy it on the "taobao".the book is just a copy,so it is cheaper.now my book case is filled with these books.I plan to keep it for some years then my children can find it. [gxyywhyzy]
