This is a sort of wish of mine. Does anyone else like to be read to? I am still a little girl when it comes to this. I often wish someone would read me a story and I think I would like to hear medieval tales and things like that, perhaps faerie stories and the like, really almost any books. I would much prefer to hear that than the blaring noise of a television most nights. It doesn't happen, but I would love it! Does anyone else think they would like this or am I the only one stuck in their childhood?

responses and comments:
I like to be read to, and I enjoy reading to others, both adults and children. One of the fondest times in recent history, my husband worked the same job, same shift, and we read to each other while we commuted. We also used to read to each other before bed time. I really enjoy reading to the grandkids, and to anyone else who will listen. [GardenGerty]
Oh see Gerty? Isn't that so very special and I mean that most sincerely! Isn't it grand and the best thing ever I think! It is so soothing to hear someone's voice reading to you. I think it is the comfort I am missing, the emotional comfort of a loving voice I like. Also however, one can learn so much and it is apparently a fact that you retain more knowledge if you are reading or read to right before you fall asleep, which is why, I have heard people listen to tapes and such before sleeping for instance. Thank you Gerty for recognising this wonderful wish I have. [TheHairDresser]
Hehehe--you and me both...I'm still a kid at heart. The only reason I learned to read at a relatively young age cause no one read stories to me.... :( My mother was never a reader throughout her life, so even as a young kid she never read bedtime stories to me....so yes, I wouldn't mind having someone read a story to me even now at the young age of 52...LOL. The closest I recently got to having someone read a story to me was when I clicked on the Leaky Cauldron's website, and lo and behold none other than JK Rowlings read to an enthusiastic crowd her last book, Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows....can't beat that huh? :) [pyewacket]
Haha Gerty! I didn't see this post til just a minute ago! What a wonderful thing you did! You see isn't it the best to be read to? I am in awe of you and how you gave such a wonderful gift to others. Yes, good parenting skills for sure... (((Gerty)))Bless you! Thanks for sharing this with us here. It is a very uplifting story. [TheHairDresser]
I don't like to be read to. I lose focus and then stop listening altogether. It is easier for me to read it myself than to hear others read. I am a member of a writing group. We read our work to each other all the time and I am not the only one in the group who admits to drifting off while someone is reading their work. I don't know whether wanting to have someone read to you would be considered being stuck in your childhood. You sound like you have a good attention span and are a good listener. That's a good thing! [patgalca]
No pat, I understood you perfectly as well, that you have a very active mind and the concentration would be off...I gotcha! Oh yes, pat, the lilt of the brogue, there's nothing like it to me. Thanks again! Thanks for mentioning that great author as well, I'll check it out. [TheHairDresser]
i like being read to. i am get to sit and listen what is being read. i get to imagine what is take place the reader is saying in my mind [Cocoa33]
Hi Cocoa Welcome to myLot! Thank you for stopping here to comment. I know, isn't it great to dream while awake, to drift off into another time, another place perhaps with the sound of a story? It is the best thing! I love it! Have fun here and sweet dreams! [TheHairDresser]
I love reading. But I love murder mysteries and gory stories. I like reading a book I can sink my teeth into. I hate starting a book and finding out it is boring. I would much rather read myself though, then have someone read to me. [Goodie123]
Well, all is good with that too Goodie! As long as it holds your interest and is a good mind distracter, then whatever works for you. I have always liked the sound of a voice however..a nice voice though, not a meanie one LOL Although I do not mind a great ghouly ghost story! Ooooo that is what I must do, find some good old ghost stories...yes, I could read them to myself like you:)* outloud though? LOL [TheHairDresser]
Hmmmm...no, i don't think so. I like to read a book by myself. I prefer silence and quiteness and to be with my own thoughts. My concentration is at its best when i'm alone and reading with no other distractions. [mencias77]
Hello mencias Welcome to myLot! Yes, it is nice the peace and quiet of reading quietly to oneself. I understand that. Thank you for stopping here to comment. Keep myLotting!*hugs* [TheHairDresser]
Yes I really like to be read to. My boyfriend and I used to take turns reading to each other when he had a book to read for his English class. It worked good because then I also knew about the book so i could help him if he needed it. [sassygirlanne007]
See isn't that nice sassygirl? The knowledge of also knowing you can help someone, all through the reading of books, is invaluable and I bet it was a great connection for you two! Thanks for sharing your comment here about reading! It's an added bonus too if you like to be read too.*hugs* [TheHairDresser]
No, I do not like to be read to. I prefer to read something for myself or be the one reading it to others (others meaning my kids :P). I think it is sweet that you still want to be read to. It shows that you are still a kid at heart. :) [sacmom]
sacmom Oh yes, very much a kid at heart, but I also have a great love of learning too. Also it is the sound of the voice that I love to break up loneliness, you know? *hugs* new friend! Thanks!xo [TheHairDresser]
No, Roz, I don't have time to be read to. It is hard to listen to someone and multi-task and I'm just about always multi-tasking. When we were teaching, though, hubby and I used to occasionally take turns reading aloud to each other for two reasons: 1) When one makes a living lecturing, one has to practice speaking well and set a good example and all, so that was a more fun and interesting way to practice, and 2) We were so busy that was about the only way we could make time to read literary texts outside of our own curriculum, so it was a good way to broad our minds and enjoy one another's company. I didn't just sit and listen to him, though, we took turns. [drannhh]
I see Ann. Well, I'm afraid I'm a big baby then because I would have to be the one sitting and listening hahahhahah. No, I would read to someone as well, as I know how nice it would be for me. Of course, you guys reading to eachother had it's multi-purpose and great help to eachother, which is the way it should be! Industrious Ann! It is nice to stop and read the books now and then, instead of always 'pounding' them! [TheHairDresser]
I like to be read too, but my husband doesn't like to do it because I fall asleep just like a kid! I also like to read outloud to others. [SukiSmiles]
Awww see, yes I am thinking I would fall asleep too Suki and shows that it would be soothing to a person. That's a funny picture, you just nodding off..but he did read to you anyway huh? This is the sweetest! Thanks *hugs* Suki [TheHairDresser]
No I don't lol But even as a Child I didn't like it as I loved to read myself and I am the same now I love reading and I need peace and quiet for it I love getting lost in a book and into a different world Hugs to you [gabs8513]
gabs dear friend! First of all, I love that Gissi Wanted Poster hahahahha! Well, I never! And you need peace and quiet? never! hahhhahaha Me too, but can I get it? Nooooooooo! Oh yes, books can take you to another time and place, out of the place you are for a while. Great gabs..be well and take care dear friend*hugs* [TheHairDresser]
no, i don't like to be read to. i like reading a book alone while i'm listening to my ipod because that way i can really understand and feel the story. [rlynzz]
Yes, I can understand that rlynzz. Sometimes it is necessary to one's concentration level. Welcome to myLot! Keep posting! Thanks! [TheHairDresser]
No, I love to be read too. As per Indian custom, we sleep with our children and as a family we are no exception. So our 8yr old son sleeps with us and every night his dad has to read out something to him (no matter how tired he is or how late it is). The stories range from ghost to fantasy to detectives. Prolonged listening to such tales have taken me to my childhood and I have become somewhat addicted to this routine, so much so that even I cant seem to sleep peacefully if ever something is not read at bedtime. [sudiptacallingu]
yes, i love the interchange of global views too. its what draws me to mylot time & again. thnx for the hugs (i could feel them here) and the same goes to you! [sudiptacallingu]
This is an interesting question. I love listening to audio books in my car, or even at home sometimes, but I don't think I would want someone to read to me. I think this might be because the people that read audio books are actors, trained to do the voices and the voice inflections, etc. A normal person like you or me would not have the ability to make the story sound real to me, like it would in my head. Does that make sense? I also think it might sound silly for someone I know to act the stuff out, where as if it's an actor on an audio book, it wouldn't bother me. I do love to read...it's my passion, actually. I like both reading the word on the page and listening to the audio. But, I think I'd want audio to be done by the pros. [dfn12968]
We meet again the lovely dfn! Yes, I can understand perfectly about how you relayed this here. I mean it is like why go to a regular doctor if you need a specialist? As in anything else, get a pro:)* This is your preference and that is clear. As long as it meets your criteria and needs, then it is best! Good to know you love reading and books too just as much as I do..something I have not been able to do for a long time. Thank you for sharing this..yes, audio books seem to be making a great comeback too! A person I know was a trucker at one time and listened to them while driving the long and lonely miles over the road.*hugs* [TheHairDresser]
I would love to read you a bedtime story my friend! I actually love reading stories, when I used to work at a nursery I would put on funny voices for the different characters in the story when reading with the children. There they would sit about 26 children around me as I sat on the chair and read to them, I loved seeing their faces and hearing them laugh and their surprises or shocks when wolfie made different noises. I have to say I was quite popular with the children and they loved wolfie reading stories. So would you like me to read you the stories with my funny voices?? [wolfie34]
wolfie! That would be ideal and most grand! Wouldn't I love that now, the wolfie reading me a lovely story? I can't think of anything I would like more..a dear friend reading to me and making wonderful noises and faces to boot LOL hahahhaah wolfie. Yes, I imagine you were very popular with the little ones. Believe it or not, when my son was small and we were living in Oxford, I too worked at a little nursery at the Barton school up the top of the great hill, and read stories to the children and baked cookies with them. You just reminded me..I forgot about that..a lovely memory for me. And my son was there too...awww, oh dear don't start me off LOL But yes, "The Wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round" LOL [TheHairDresser]
I love to read, love love love to read. My preferences go in this order: Romance, Romance, then Romance again (lol), then a nice mystery book and of course informational books. Have you ever read Zane? But the best book to me personally that i have ever read was the Bible. [Linda4ualways]
Oh yes, one can never get bored with the bible Linda, for trying to decipher it sometimes is the key LOL, and romance I used to like, but I am afraid my view of that subject has been grown dingy a bit over the years haha. Zane? No I have not read it..perhaps you could fill me in...I see you are a Mary J fan too! I love her...wonder if she's got any books out about her life?*hugs* be my friend? :)* Thanks. xo [TheHairDresser]
I use to love when my mom would read to me. She would read to me everynight before I went to bed. Now if I could just get my hubby to read to me!hahahahh That will never happen.LOL [TerryZ]
Looks like we are in the same boat then Terry! Be my friend then? hahahhaha I know wouldn't it be grand Terry? Nice to see you here Terry! *hugs* xo [TheHairDresser]
Come over to my house - I'll read aloud to you. I love doing that. If it is something I have read before, I might even do a little acting out some parts or do voices while I read. I hate to be read to, though. I have a milk hearing problem that makes it difficult for me to understand what people are saying, so I use subtitles and closed captioning, and I read lips, so I lose a ot of the story if someone else reads it aloud. [SomethingGood332]
hahahah Something, I will, I'll be right there and I would love to hear all the voices as well as the acting haha. Oh yes, if you can't hear very well, then that would definitely put a damper on someone reading to you. :)* Thanks and I would love that! Amazing how one can manage however and I would read to you anyways, if you could hear me or not and do a lot of faces then to go with the words!:)* [TheHairDresser]
LOL for me its not a "being stuck in my childhood" type thing since I was never read to as a child...HOWEVER I DO love when my kids read to me..but that for us is a special bonding time ya know...Other than that though I really cant stand others reading to me..either they're too slow or there isnt the emotion that there would be fi I was reading it myself and so on...When my kids read to me though...I'm in heaven :-) [Ravenladyj]
{{{Ravenladyj}} I would never shoo you away..yes, it is rather a hoot, isn't it what kids say! I also remember he said to me once and he was around 3 yrs.."Mom, will you wear those shoes with the sticks on the back?" OMG! [TheHairDresser]
Hello TheHairDresser :) I absolutely loathe having someone read to me. I cannot stand it. I never liked it, even as a child. I much prefer reading for myself, even though I have started to adjust to books on CD when I'm traveling. [Transdisc]
{{{{Trans}}}} You are not rude! You are a love and I only just saw this post, friends? hahaha of course!xo [TheHairDresser]
Personally I would rather read it myself - much faster input that way. But it is nice if the storyteller happens to be really good at it - if they're expressive and place emotion into the reading in the proper places. I love listening to old Indian tales. There's just something about how they're told and is really captivating. Nowadays the only way I get "read to" is when I listen to books on tape because I have an hour long commute to work so it's nice to fill in the time with the tape. Tink [tinkerick]
Hello tinker! Nice to see you here and sharing at myLot..welcome! Yes, I can see that the tapes are a good way to go, especially when travelling. As I mentioned before, it is nice to hear the old stories and tales of one's own heritage. One of my favourites is an old Irish tale my Mother always told me...the Children of Nir..a great story. Yes, if one is fortunate enough to have someone who is an expressive reader, then it is a pleasure to listen to them. [TheHairDresser]
Awww. . .well I do know what you mean. My mom reading to us when we were sick in bed is a comforting memory of mine. I can almost smell the Vicks vaporub on our chests even as I type. Now I like to read myself, but I don't desire so much to be read to. Maybe one of the books on tape with dramatic actors? I guess I would like it if I couldn't read myself. [SuzyPuppyChese]
Awww, Suz, even the Vicks Vaporub memory is grand LOL My Mother sat with me many a night with my nervous tummy and earaches galore. *hugs* Yes, those books on tape with the actors sound interesting don't they? I've never heard one! Good idea. Thanks Suzy! [TheHairDresser]
I love to read but I don't really enjoy being read to. I am not a fan of audiobooks either. My husband likes to listen to audiobooks on long trips and they put me right to sleep. He also loves it when I read to him. I will read him a few chapters of whatever book he is reading at the time once in awhile because he likes it so much. [moneyandgc]
Hi money! Can we be friends please because anyone that will read to their husband is alright in my books! books, get it? LOL ah, enough of my corny jokes!*hugs* [TheHairDresser]
I like to read. For my own benefit. I enjoy it. I enjoy reading to my daughter as well. She is learning, slowly. And its wonderful. Yes I like being read to. When I have had difficulty sleeping, my husband has read to me until I fall asleep. I don't know if its just that his voice is soothing or if its some childhood thing. But I enjoy it when he does that. [ersmommy1]
Hi ers! Remind me to marry a husband that will read to me the next time LOL! I love that yours does it for you...isn't it the best? I think it is and would love it and be ever so happy and not need any kind of meds then haha*hugs* Friends pls? [TheHairDresser]
My fondest childhood memory is of my mother reading from one of my collection of Golden Books, my chin on her knee, loving her voice, and wishing I could read! I AM definitely stuck in my childhood, dear RozAnn, and it is very comforting and definitely better than me doing the reading to another person, LOL!!! [seagoddess28]
What a sweet memory you have sea and I can totally relate. Isn't it grand sea the memories and the sound of the voice, so soothing. A beautiful picture you painted there for me, you when small listening to the Mother. What a great painting that would make:)* Oh yes, I would much long to be read to, than me being the reader..anyway, if I had to read to someone here, believe me I would read them up and down LOL sea;)* hahhaha sea! [TheHairDresser]
I have never been read to as a child. My parents are really not into reading and I don't actually know where I got my love for reading, LOL! But then I guess being read to is not one of my many wishes. I prefer reading on my own so that I can set my own reading pace the way I want it. [mari_skye]
Hello mari Well that is alright too by all means. It is just something I think I was thinking would be nice for me. I would like it, but I also too enjoy reading, not as much as I used to, as it is harder to concentrate, but I am working on it all the time! MyLot is good practice too. Thanks*hugs* friends pls? [TheHairDresser]
I remember when my mom used to read to my brother and I when we were very young. It was very exciting when I could start reading the stories to her! How Tiger got his bounce was the first book I ever read by myself. I don't really wish that someone would read to me anymore. I do read science fiction and fantasy books from time to time. [Monkeyrose]
Yes I really enjoyed reading a lot. My mom used to read us all kinds of crazy stories. She read us the Arabian Nights. She also read to us about camelot and king arthur. It as always a treat to get her to read to us. Although we had one book that we still laugh about. It was called Sheep on a ship... .you can just imagine the mispronounciations that 5 year old would make with that one! [Monkeyrose]
To this day, I still adore being read to! If you're still stuck in childhood, then I'm right there along with you. :-) I think one of my fondest memories from childhood was the bedtime ritual we had around our house. After getting snuggled under the covers, my dad would come in and read a chapter to me from a book I'd chosen. If I was really, reeeeeeally good (and persuasive enough), I was sometimes able to convince him to read an extra chapter to me. I don't remember how old I was when we stopped doing the bedtime book every night. But I would sure love to have someone do that for me now. I sure bet I'd sleep a whole lot better if someone would. :-) [mamakat]
Good mamakat I just saw this post here..having trouble keeping up with all the great friends myself here on myLot and of course yes! So happy to have you too and yes, I am sure we could drive your husband batty!(((mamakat))):)* [TheHairDresser]
I love it. Audio books feel this need for me. Have you tried this? [cripfemme]
Hi crip! I really haven't tried the audio route. But it looks like it is soon on the horizon for me, as your excellent recommendation. Thanks! Glad you like this too. big huggers* friends? [TheHairDresser]
While it would be lovely being read to, I would much prefer to be the one reading to someone else. Maybe I just like the sound of my voice but I could read aloud endlessly. Reading aloud helps me slow my reading down and gives me more time to process what is happening. Reading aloud is not the same if there are no listeners though! [LouRhi]
Yes I was thinking exactly the same thing, I am sure with the wonders of modern technology I can find some way to do it from the comfort of my home and reach the globe! :0) [LouRhi]
I don't, only because I have always been a very fast reader and the majority of people that I know don't read as quickly as I do. So for me personally, it is frustrating to go that slowly. In fact when I am reading aloud to someone else, they always have to tell me to slow down because they can't keep up with what I'm saying. [kbourgerie]
Yes actually I am moving along rather well. I am surprising even myself, but I'll tell you what, I'm having a great time doing it. Thanks. [kbourgerie]
My nephew always listen to books in the reading form in his I pod.I tried to listen for sometime but became restless after sometime. It was not that pleasant to me.I like the old style of reading the books myself lying in the bed and holding them in my lap with passion and love as a baby.As you become tired and sleepy gently putting the bookmark and placing down besides you is like making a baby go to sleep with you.Is it not so? [balasri]
It is always a pleasure to respond to a discussion of the nice, gentle lady. [balasri]
I really enjoyed it when my grandma read to me so I might enjoy it if it were a loved one. Personally do not like the audio books though. [shewolf52002]
Hi she Welcome to the reading corner LOL. Oh I know I would much prefer to be read to by the real deal than an audio device, but however, I may be considering this as I need a good comfort at times and I feel this would do the trick. Glad you have that wonderful memory of your Grandma doing it for you. Thanks she((((she))))* [TheHairDresser]
when I was in my young age it is my Mother always read for me stories of fairytales or sometimes just thought me to read in my books for School but now a days it is me that do this things in my children, I passed it on to them the same thing my Mother do fro me when I am in my younger years of learning...... [cherylal]
Hello cherylal Yes, and isn't it nice the reading tradition that is passed down? It is to me such a special gift when someone reads to children and you. Nice to have those memories of your Mother. We can say so much with reading and I love to be read to as well. Thank you cherylal and this is such a good thing for your children.(((cheryl))) [TheHairDresser]
I was dealing with this guy and he used to read poetry to me. I thought that to be the nicest, sweetest thing and it was poetry too!! It is nice being read to, to be able to just close your eyes and bring yourself to that era that the story is taken place in and i love to read myself. [Linda4ualways]
Linda Oh poetry? Wow that guy was something else! Indeed that is ever so nice and any guy that reads poetry to you has to be the best! That is so lovely Linda! You see now you have that very special memory to keep with you always! Reading rules! (((Linda)))thank you for sharing this with us. [TheHairDresser]
I am the oppisite. I love to read to anyone that will listen. I can make up a story as I'm going along to keep the listener enthralled during the entire storytime. I use to do this at the library for the little ones...Such Fun!!!Lori [dumblnddzzy]
Wow blnd! That is wonderful and what I love best..I had a partner that could do that one time and it was great! I used to love it because it was so soothing to just listen to a very unique story! That is a very special gift and I bet those little ones loved it! You'll have to do that for your patient in the hospital:)* ((((blnd))) Thanks! [TheHairDresser]
Actually, I wouldn't like that. I enjoy reading so much and if someone doesn't read along smooth enough, quick enough, stumbles over words or whatever, I would just be so irritated by that. I prefer to read to myself. I have a few books on audio tape but when I'm listening to them that way, I find it difficult to concentrate as much as if I'm reading it myself. I love reading soooo much that I'm in the middle of two different books right now. :) [michelyn]
michelyn! (((mich))) I can't believe you are actually reading two books at once..you must truly enjoy reading..well, to me, there is nothing better, one can learn so much and that is why I love to be read to..the child is still in me and I have a deep love of learning still. Thank you! Enjoy your books! One day I hope to have a nice study with a bunch of good books! [TheHairDresser]
