Do You Love To Read While Lying On Your Bed

I always have this habit of reading while lying down not only on that bedroom bed but, even in the sofa at the living room. Newspapers, novels, comic books, anything that i can hold on to, that strikes my interest will most likely be read while i am lying down, resting (so to say). How about you, do have this same habit of mine? Some doctors will tell us that it is not good for our eyes to be doing this. Do you agree?

responses and comments:

Yeah I love to read while lying on my bed but it kind of isn't all that great in the winter time because my room is like subzero temperatures in the winter. My room is easily at least ten degrees lower then the rest of our house and we burnt out our space heater trying to keep warm. I would much rather lie on my bed in the summer and read but reading is great no matter what as long as it's a good book. [jambi462]
(so sorry to have been unable to make comments immediately. we went offline soon after i have posted this discussion days ago). we don't have winter from where i am but, i do understand how it is from your place basing on your description. we have our cold days too, during november and december but, they can never compare with your below zero ones, jambi. i will always recall that i read more books during the colder months and rainy days. most probably, we feel the same way about reading so much more during the cold days. [trinidadvelasco]

I love reading on my bed as well. I find it very relaxing. I think I have an easier time entering the world of the novel, when I'm lying on my bed. [dodo19]
yes, most of us will feel a good flow of our imaginative thoughts if we are lying fully relaxed while reading. [trinidadvelasco]

Ah...thats my comfort zone where I spend my private moment reading. Reading is one of my passion and spend most my time either reading or surfing. Medically I do not know the downside of reading while lying down, maybe that explains why I am short-sighted.LOL [zandi458]
yes, reading while lying down have ill effects on our eyesight. actually, i cannot read for long hours lying in bed as it would cause a headache. the doctor used to tell me that i have strained my eyes due to wrong reading habits. [trinidadvelasco]

one of My favorite activity is reading while lying down at everywhere!i fell good in those moment, but this habit is bad for eyesight,in the matter of fact,my eyesight is bad. [licisheng508]
the problem is, even if we told over and over about this, we still do it, right my friend? we always go for comfort. [trinidadvelasco]

Reading while lying on my bed or even on our sofa is my habit. My dad usually tells me not to do that especially when I'm studying because I ended up sleeping all the time. That causes our major conflict! lol! I grew up having that BAD habit (as my dad told me) and I think, I can't changed it anymore. It's my way of relaxing anyway. For the medical aspect, I can't remember where i've heard that it is fine to read while lying cause it doesn't affect your eyes anyway. What really matters is that there must always be enough light while reading. [chris20]
oh, this is different from what i was told. reading while lying down strains the eyes and causes some kind of headaches in a person. anyway, as for the light, it must be coming from behind what's being read. thus, what gets lighted is the reading material and not our eyes. [trinidadvelasco]

I usually only read in bed. Its easier for me to concentrate on what im reading. [stardustw83]
that's what i like about reading while being in bed, too, stardust. [trinidadvelasco]

Hi there! Yes I have this habit too. I mostly read by lying down on bed only. I read at night and this helps me to get to sleep quickly. Though it is not good for eyes for sure and also i put two pillows below my neck when i am reading like that so it's not good for my posture as well. but i don't read for long like this so it is ok for me. [swtpareek]
i agree with you, my friend, that reading is another way of making oneself doze off easily in sleep. [trinidadvelasco]

Thats' interesting! Why would they say that? What difference does it make? Unless it's on account of the lighting hitting your eyes and casting a shadow on your material instead. At any rate, I always read while sitting or standing, I CAN'T stand light in my eyes. angry [mechanicNOT62]
wow, mechanic, you hit it right on the head. that is how reading should be carried out. however, most of us are just hardheaded creatures. we choose to cross the instructions and do what we want to. [trinidadvelasco]

yes i do love to read while in bed,but the problem is am eyes itches and start crying ,,,,lolz i know itz funny but what to do,,,,what i love is to be done,,,,and it has to be romantic o rinteresting novels den it wil b fun ,,,,,,,, [jonnybloom]
it is true that it is so much fun reading while lying very relaxed in the comfort of our own bed...let alone the itchy eyes and the tears flowing... [trinidadvelasco]

I've tried but it's not my hobby. I read pocketbooks when I was teen and some books that interests me. About science, history, and a few love stories. It helps me in sleeping though. As of now, well I rarely do it. Maybe if I'm bored or got nothing to do or my piece of resting or relaxing.. [paoxav]
it is good for your eyes to have outgrown the habit, paoxav. i am happy for you, my friend, on this development. [trinidadvelasco]

I like to read lying on my bed. But after a few minutes my back aches. so I have to read upright or sitting in a chair. Thanks. [chunijole]
changing positions is common among us. however, most readers just simply change positions while still lying in bed. i always turn on my tummy once in a while. everyone will tell you that sitting in chair while reading is a better option, over that of lying in bed while doing so. [trinidadvelasco]

Hi trinidadvelasco!I'd like to read while lying on my bed.It is very convenient to get asleep.I feel it is comfortable. But it seems not better to the eyes.Every coin has two sides. Best wishes and happy mylotting!:) [njblair]
same with me here, i doze off without intending to. [trinidadvelasco]

Well, if your eyes are tired and needed a very good sleep i supposed it can be bad. most specially if the lights are not bright enough to help you read accurately. it can really damage your eyes if it's tired or your reading a book with a candle as it's light or maybe dim light. [Greeneagle24]
most of us read in bed without the sufficient lighting to support the act. maybe, this is what is causing most of the strain in the eyes while reading in bed. [trinidadvelasco]

Hi trinidadvelasco! I usually start reading while I am seated whether on the sofa or on bed..and while I get to read longer, I tend to stretch my legs.,and after awhile, I am already lying down while reading. lol.. I am not sure if reading while lying down is bad for the eyes..all I know is that the kind of light that you use while reading can affect the eyes. Take care and have a great day! lovelots..faith [faith210]
Hi friend! Good to see you around too! haha..We can never be so sure, maybe it still holds true until to this day with what your doctor said and it is just not being discussed by doctors now. I think we should do a research on that, after it is for our own good. Thanks for sharing that. take care and blessings to you my friend. lovelots..faith [faith210]

I dropped a hard cover book on my head once because of that, so no answer on the eyes, but watch out for your noggin! [Volcom9681]
hey, that's funny volcom. i just couldn't help it but, imagine how it happened. hehehe. [trinidadvelasco]

Hi trinidadvelasco, Sure I love to do that. How else can I position myself to read lol? Lying on my bed to read is what I normally do. However, I will switch position every now and then though. happy Not sure about the eyes part... confused [lordwarwizard]
i am happy to see you around, lordwarwizard. so, you are still mylotting... yes, those turns usually take place while reading. making adjustments in one's position, trying to find the most comfortable one. [trinidadvelasco]

Usually books/novels are the only thing that I read while lying in bed. I think it's the fact that I know that I will be there and involved with it for a considerably longer period of time than if I were just reading a newpaper or magazine, so i want to be somewhere I can be comfortable. A newspaper, magazine or antything that i might just browse, sitting at a table, or just on the couch is good enough. There's one more vital reason I like to read books in bed. Usually after reading for a while I get quite yawn sleepy. So being in bed saves me from having to relocate to take a sleep napwink. [uicbear]
i get your point, uicbear. our therapist has also advised us to be by the bed when doing things which does need much motion to achieve. once one feels sleepy, he/she must immiediately seize the opportunity. [trinidadvelasco]

I like to read in my bed before i got to sleep, but sometimes i fall asleep midpage and i end up sleeping ON the book (yikes). Now adays i read while lying down on the couch cuz at least i know i will wake up to go to bed should i go to sleep. It's one of those learned comforts of life and the ideal image for a home (curled up on the couch reading a book under lamplight...yah, ideal image). [reon862]
it is so easy to picture you in my mind while you are reading a book, reon...in that couch. [trinidadvelasco]

i like to read so i read everywhere such as on my bed [noniefam]
a voracious reader like you, will surely find no need for an appropriate location at all. [trinidadvelasco]

I don't neccessarily agree that it will hurt your eyes. I don't read alot, but when I do I like to read in bed, or laying down. It tends to make me more relaxed and then it's easier to fall asleep. [wallfranklin]
if the act of reading lulls us to sleep then, i believe that it is now contrary to be hurting the eyes, wallfranklin. [trinidadvelasco]

I sometimes read books but not in beds I like to read newspapers in bed angry [shoffman2000]
so, we still share the same bed reading habit, then. [trinidadvelasco]

I enjoy it too, reading in bed, either lying down or sitting up in bed. I've read on the couch a few times but the tv has to be off and it has to be quiet enough for me to concentrate on what I'm reading. I had not realised that lying on the bed can cause problems for our eyes. I would think it had something to do with the lightening moreso than lying down reading, probably. [maddysmommy]
i have realized, too, as i am reading through the responses, that it must be the lighting, which is inadequate, that causes the eyestrain. [trinidadvelasco]

gosh, your not the only one, when i really like what i read, i prefer resting my back on some pillows and just read away, ill just get up for food or bathroom, and i wont stop reading until i finish the book in a day. happy reading! [wraithhime]
hey, you really read so fast, wraithhime. i can only read a book within a day if it is the thin one. as for those thick novels, it takes me weeks. [trinidadvelasco]

I do typically read when I'm laying down, although I often fall asleep doing this, which isn't good. It just happens to be the only way I'm comfortable reading. [itsmefaith]
itsmefaith, i believe that it is fine to fall asleep while reading. remember, we need lots of sleep in this life. [trinidadvelasco]

I usually read when I am "sitting" on my bed but I couldn't read when I am lying there. I usually sit up straight and hold a book to read until I am really tired and decide to go to sleep. It's more relaxing for me this way. [wondericequeen]
ummmm...i think that it is a better way of doing it. [trinidadvelasco]

If I am reading a book I prefer to curl up on the couch and read. If I am lying in my bed I will get really sleepy or I just get uncomfortable after a long period of time. [messageme]
ummm...i'd surely like to fall asleep while doing so. [trinidadvelasco]

No friend, with the changing routine and pattern of life i have almos stopped reading, even the newspaper i read only becoz there is power cut in the morning and i can't start my computers so there is no option, i am kind of addicted to sit on computers even if i get 2 minutes to sit here...naturally adding all the time taken to start the computers and its booting etc...happy...my routine is almost fixed from morning to 1 or 1.30pm no time, all cooking, sending children to school etc. Then in afternnon i sit for sometime on computers and again their studies , homework etc. So what i read is their course books..happy...while resting i only rest. [eshaan]
you are really a very busy lady, eshaan. i went through same days also when my children were still young and of preschool/school ages. i know what you are talking about all the work that needs to be complied with. [trinidadvelasco]

yes i do that but it is bad for eye sight... and after a while i would feel sleepy and dozz off..hehehe yeap it really isn't good for our eyes, because of the angle of reading and also less light on the book.. yeap it is a bad habit [lovesummer]
perhaps we keep on doing this despite knowing that it is a bad habit, lovesummer, because it is very comfortable. then, we just fall asleep unknowingly in the process. hmmmm...have a good restful sleep, my friend. [trinidadvelasco]

Personally I have always loved to read tucked underneath the blankets. For me it always made it more enjoyable and I usually find myself able to get into and enjoy the book more as well. I guess it is because you usually have peace and quiet and since that is where you sleep, reading in bed gives you more of a chance to relax and imagine you are there with the person writing the story as well. [KrauseHome]
this is also how i feel about the experience of reading while in bed. it is very comfortable. besides, if i fall asleep in the process, so much the better. [trinidadvelasco]

I always do. Before I go to sleep I always find time to read. I do lie down because I'm too tired from work but it's really a habit of mine too – lying while reading. I feel comfortable and I am not that distracted if I'm lying actually. [thaMARKER]
this is indeed the best reading position if you are already tired from work. relaxing and taking it easy...reading. [trinidadvelasco]

Yes!I too love to read anything by lying down in bed.It is some what relaxing to read in that way.But sure,it is not a good habit to follow and the doctors are right that it harms our eyes.We shall look for good lighting, that is the light should come from your left and the book should be some 1 foot distance from the eyes.At least we should follow this.Cheers! [srganesh]
srganesh, it is very difficult to observe those measures if i am lying in my bed while reading. well then, the doctors must have their good reasons to be advising their patients to avoid reading while in bed lying and trying to catch some sleep. [trinidadvelasco]

Yes, I love to read while lying in bed. I find it very relaxing and pleasing activity. I like reading while traveling also. [cybersoft01]
reading while traveling is something that i can never do. i just couldn't read at all those words, those paragraphs if i am on transit. i envy you on this count, cybersoft. [trinidadvelasco]

Dear friend, I do like to read while lying on bet at times it gives much ease and relax feeling to my neck and backbone and also body. At times when I tried of reading lying I may get up read in a sitting posture. But more I feel comfort to body while I read by lying this may even tend to give sleepy mood.happy [SHAMRACK]

Excume me,dear, how can i call you for short ? i also ready while lying on bed,and it's really bad for eyes and neck. That's why i'm short-sighted now.And also sometimes i feel sleep while reading. [Nancy312]

yes i like to read while lying on my bed. even this discussion of yours, i'm now reading & replying while lying on my bed. yeah i heard that it is not good for our eyes, but i just can't sit down to read something. maybe i should try reading while standing up. [victorywp]
