Yes I remember some of the more popular books we had to read. Didn't care for them but I remember them. The one book I really liked was "Where are the Children" by Mary Higgins Clark. I had to read it my 10th grade year for my creative writing class. I couldn't put the book down and that is the book that got me hooked on Mary Higgins Clark. I now own all her books. She is a great author. [speedy1279]

:) hmm.. yeah, only a small portion of it. unless you are a teacher.. you teach back your student the same book you've learn in high school. :D glad that we don't have to memorize it constantly. [ergg78]

Yeah, I remember that was when I really knew I had to go looking for something decent to read. Despite a good teacher, we got some weird collection of objects which I honestly can't say I want to remember. To Kill A Mockingbird might well be a great book, but I can't pretend that my education and love of reading was in any way influenced by it. A friend and I more or less ransacked the school library looking for decent books. There was something called "A High Wind In Jamaica" as one of the required books, and to this day I have no idea if there was an actual book, or just a collection of oppressive pages. Zero impact. It's one of the few books I've ever managed to completely ignore. Even "Lolita" was conspicuous enough to despise, but not this thing. I found "Three Men In A Boat" by Jerome K Jerome, a 19th century book which still is one of my alltime favorites. "White Fang" by Jack London, "1984", "Brave New World", and there must have been a few others, because I practically lived in the library, but those are the standouts. I still have copies of all of them. [Wanderlaugh]

I have good teachers in high school. They taught us literature both foreign and local and we were knowledgeable of it. Those contemporary books they told us to read and those I could still recall are Old man and the sea by Ernest Hemingway, all the tragedies of Shakespeare, all the plays of Shakespeare, the poems on romantic and renaissance periods and other known literature. [everlasting]

I actually rememeber a lot of the books I read in high school, a lot more than I remember the ones from college. I think that is because it is often easier for me to remember fiction. I think part of the reason why I remember so many of them is because a lot of them I either really loved (To Kill a Mockingbird, Cold Sassy Tree, The Great Gastby) or really hated (The Sound and the Fury, The Scarlet Letter, Heart of Darkness). Perhaps it was because those years solidified my love of reading and since we had to pick them apart so much, I just remember them better. It's funny because recently I've been thinking of giong back and rereading some of these books. I want to see how I think about the issues in the books differently now that I'm older. For instance, when I reread To Kill a Mockingbird last summer, I think I liked it even more than the first time I read it. I understood it a little better than before. Oh, and for the book I most hated, that might have to be Heart of Darkness. The story was just drowning in way too much description and I found it so hard to get through. The kicker is that it's also a really short book. Oh well, I guess it just wasn't for me. [krebstar5]

not much... little!! and plzzzzzzzzz i hate studying dont remind me again;) [mariyamaka]

I can remember reading "The Giver" in my 8th grade English class. It was my favorite book back then. I read ahead of everyone else and ended up reading it three times by the time the test rolled around. It was such a good movie. And then from high school English, I remember Fahrenheit 451 and then I remember the story from some other ones but I can't remember the name of them. I took a Southern Fiction class in 10th grade and it had such an impact on me that I remember every book we read in there. My teacher was amazing. I had read "The Member of the Wedding" by Carson McCullers when I was in middle school and I hated it. I didn't even finish it. But I read it again in that Southern Fiction class and just by the discussions alone I ended up loving that book. [xxidriveastick]

Yes, I remeber quite a few of them. We read the classics and there is definitely a reason those books stay around forever. We read all of Dickens, most of Jane Austen, Thackeray, the brontes etc. The one I liked the best was George Eliots "The Mill On The Floss" and the one I liked least was the Bronte classic "Wuthering heights." Don't know whay but I never liked that book. I re-read it a number of years later and I still didn't like it. [irisheyes]

No, because most of the books that I read in high school were not good. Most of them were "classics" written for people in other times and I could not relate. While I didn't mind some classics like the Scarlet Letter, I can't get into some of them like Pride and Prejudice. P&P was dreadful to me. [Transformed]

I too hated To Kill a Mockingbird, I loves Animal Farm. I also remember reading Lord of the Flies, The Pearl, Ceasar, Moby Dick,Farenheit 451,The Great Gatsby thats all I remember. [JRamirez87]
We read the Great Gatsby too, it wasn't my favorite book. [onecutehoneybear]

I hate Romeo and Juliet :l [TheArtist]
I hated this book too. I didn't even remember reading it in HS until I read your comment. I'm not a big shakespear fan!! [onecutehoneybear]

at this stage og my life i cant remember any books that i have read during school days time, maybe i havent read anyone. [gemini1960]

book have been always my interest i always used to gulp books whenever i got a chance especially in highschool and i remember many of them , i hated fairy tales for no reason and i hate books on super heros [kooora]

yes, i remembered some of books i have to read.I think it is necessary to read some books that we are not interested in.in our country ,there is a proverb,' when you use the knowledge, you found you read too little books.'we dont know which book is useful for us in the future,so we should read more and more, from our interests to hateress. [wonderful1]

I love to read so I think all books deserve a read. Can't say I loved them all but a few stick out as being great. Of mice and men, fahrenheit 451, to kill a mockingbird, Death of a salesman, I loved these books. The effects of gamma rays on marigolds not only has a really dumb name but the book was awful. There were more i know but they must not have stood out as being either good or bad as i can't remember them. [kakuemmom]

luckily i wasnt pushed to read any certain books in high school.i only read what i was interested in.they are mostly some essays, poems, and novels.i almost forget what i've learned in class but for the excurricular things i read,i still remember all of them clearly.because they once inspired me a lot,by arousing my deep rooted thoughts and sub-consciousness. [aciddrop]

Nope i never used to remember at that very moment when i used to study and go for my papers what will i remember now. I just stay far from books cause they will never mix wit me.. [Betso221]

I wasn't allowed to read to kill a mockingbird cause my mom and step dad had issues with it. I do remember readng Farenheit 451 though. It was a good book. Other than that, I really don't remember reading that many books. I do remember reading a book for a friend and doing his homework over it but I can't remember the name of the book now. I only remember doing it cause I would wake up at 3 or 4am and not be able to go back to sleep so I would pull his book and homework out. [onecutehoneybear]

aaaaaahhh . the books. i remember reading alot of books in high school. some i remember only the titles, others only the story, even others just certain scenes. but what i remember clearly is the feeling when i was absorbed in the the story. so when ever someone would mention a particular title or i hear about a stoy similar to the one i read years ago a familiar emotion would stir inside of me, and i'd sometimes get excited or just lay back let the warmth reignite my memories of the book. [krgreen]

I really hated Animal Farm, no offense :)) I didnt ever read To Kill a Mocking Bird. I am trying to recall those books though that my teachers had us read. You know another I didnt like? "The Scarlet Letter". It made me ANGERY! How sad it was a book that was totally sad! :(( However, it was boring at times too! Cant recall right now many others though. But those I did recall. Dickens was kinda interesting. I loved some Shakesphere. Those I wasnt told to read was mostly christian fiction teen books. Like Christy Miller (still a favorite series!). I also loved Wrinkle in Time Series, and well others too. [monkeywriter]

We never had to read the books on our own time btu used to study them ins chool. but i was one of those who would read the entire book in the beginning itself rather than going chapter by chapter in school. I remember we had David Copperfield in the sixth grade. I loved reading it. As we grew older, we had a lot of Shakespeare plays like A Midsummer's Night Dream, As You Like It, etc. We would also have collections of short stories which i still remember (some of them atleast). [bindishah]

i remember getting assigned "1984" to read. i still remember it,and it's getting scarier by the day.he was off a few years, but some of the things seem on the way to happening now. treasure island i didn't really like. i know it's a classic, but it seemed slow rolling to me. [scarlet_woman]

i just remember a little, not all i have read. it would be easier to remember reading book in our interest, so if you interest in the book than you will easier to remember it [mypchere]

I renember principalment the books about my interests. [Dmitrizhirkov]

I hated Macbeth. The one thing I do remember is that we had to read TessD'Ubervilles.I didn't really read it but I had seen the film and i took notes in class and I aced my exam on it.I do remember liking Romeo and Juliet. We broke it down so we could learn Elizabethan English. And we had to memorize a few lines of the play. [sarahruthbeth22]

I absolutely love to read, I was the only kid in school who got in trouble for reading too much. (I always had a book in my desk, reading it well the teacher was talking). I'm not a big shakespeare fan, even though I read Romeo and Juliet for fun, it was not required reading. The one Shakespeare that was required was MacBeth, I was lost until I watched the movie, once I found out the plot line it was bearable. I loved "On The Beach" by Nevil Shute, I believe. Another one I love is "The Last Canadian", I probably still reread it every year or so. Need to get another copy though because mine is mangled now. One of my favourites even though it wasn't required was "Island of the Blue Dolphins", I remembered that book so much that I tracked down a copy of it for my daughter when she was around 10. I confess I read it again before I gave it to her for Christmas. Probably the one I hated the most was "The Chrysalids", I don't like fantasy books. That is probably why I never read some classics like "The Lord of the Rings: trilogy. I do enjoy passing down books to my daughters that I enjoyed like "The Little House on the Prairie" series, Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew. [red158]

Yeah, part of them. Some thing like certain concept from geographic text book remains firmly in my mind. I can remember the term continental climate means a specific climate found in a large continent. It is usually dry and with little humidity. The wind reaches the central part of a huge land scape will become cold and without moisture. Then such area will become desert. [smkwan2007]

I remember a lot of my high schools books, like Selected Readings, Treasury of Short Stories, Julius Ceasar, Kavya Sangrah, etc etc. I do have some of them still with me, though it has been more than 8 yesr since I passes high school. I loved most of them, like i liked the stories like Mark of Vishnu from Selected Readings and I liked the Pearl Necklace from Treasury of short stories. But at that time as well as now I do admire Julius Ceasar a lot. There are many reasons of liking it like: 1. The writing of Shakespeare. 2. The character of Julius Ceasar. 3. The era. 4. The beautiful use of similes and metaphors in the play. 5. And last but not the least the speach by Antony after Ceasar's death. Oh I love it! [vijiayyar]

I had to read 2 Shakespeare plays,'The Merchant of Venice', and 'Hamlet'...it wasn't much fun! And I remember 2 novels,'Roll of Thunder', and 'Amongst Women'..Amongst Women is by an Irish writer and it wasn't that great, i aslo remember reading a play called 'A Doll's House', which again wasn't my fav. [emisle]

I do really remember what i have read in my books during high-school days. And it is a big help for me to cope up with our lesson because it is easier for us to understand if we have our schema or knowledge about the topic.I want to read more books. [denden]

I only remember a few things that I learnt at school and they are the things that I have since found out were incorrect, a few times I have heard facts and it definitely was not what I was taught at school.... [lilaclady]

If the book which i have read is a good one then i'l surely remember it, but if it was something which was very boring then , i won't even remember anything about the name. [di1indilin]

Actually I did sometimes people would say quotes from certain books when I was working and I knew the book and what they were refering to and if you are going to pursue futher education there are quite a few books, plays, and fables that you will still have to read so I think yes you do but I found out when you come out unless you are going to be an architect of something like that you mostly use basic math. [papinprincess]

it is no use to remember anything about the books in highschool,i think that we should not read books but increase social experience.in our country,in highschool, students must be pass the exams through hard work to read book, when get a high mark, you can enter a famous college to study, and then to find a good job,but a student get a high mark,it don't mean his ability is also good. [mari123]

Oh my, high school was a long way back in memory lane and I don't remember them anymore. I remember though that I read them because I had to, and not because I wanted to. I never really have gotten a genuine interest in them and just appreciated the ones that we read in Literature. Other than those, the rest are buried in my memory. I'm already 33, so it's quite understandable why. :) [steney]

I can't remember a lot about them but I do remember reading some and even some of the titles. I read Brother Sam is Ded, No Exit, Animal Farm, Farniheit 451, To Kill a Mockingbird, Mans Search for Meaning (great book by the way), The Hachet, and some others. I only liked a couple of them too. I couldn't stand Animal Farm or To Kill a Mockingbird. I loved Mans Search For Meaning. [rodeotexas]

We read 2 books of shakespeare and Im still confused LOL We also read Silas Marner and the Rover. I know what happened in Silas Marner because it was on TV years later otherwise it was a complete snore. I have read shakespeare and seen films of it and loved it but they were not enforced. It must be part of school enforcement because my son read Lord of the flies (for school)and hated it but i loved it. My daughter is reading tis pity she's a haw(spelt wrongly purposefully) which is a very odd (promiscuous)book,my son read wise children last year. He says A level books are almost 'pornographic' in their content theses days. [mihimolly]

I remember a lot of the stuff that I read in high school and I still make my daughter read some of those same things as I am sure that they will stick with her too. One of my favorite books of all time was a book that I had to read for college and it was "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou. She is a faulous author and if you have never read anything by her I would highly suggest that you go to the library and find something by her and read it. She is such a great author and poet. She is also a very nice lady and I am so impressed by all the things that she has done with her life. [carolscash]

Yaa you asked a very remarkable think We remembers about our friends very clearly then what we read at that time... I think many of us can not recognize that what they have read in their childhood. I am also one of those who are unable to remember that........ [pushpendragold]

After reading through the other books that high school teachers assigned their students, it seems like I was also assigned many of the same ones. I've always loved to read so English was my favorite subject. I loved "Animal Farm" and "Lord of the Flies." These books were well written and both had valuable lessons in them about people that touched me at that time and stuck with me. I did not like "Heart of Darkness" and I remember writing in my book report that it was too wordy which made my English teacher laugh. I'm also not a fan of Shakespeare and we read several of his works. I did like Romeo and Juliet because it was romantic and I thought the easiest to understand, perhaps it was because it was about teen love and it was something that I could relate to at that time. [gardengalz]

The only one I really remembered was To Kill A Mockingbird. I actually liked the book and was the first (and only one, I think) to actually read the chapters assigned and was the only one that knew the answers to the teachers questions when she asked them. I vaguely remember Animal Farm, since you brought it up. I remember having to read it, but not what it was about. [lisado]
