Rather than checking in search engines, I prefer to see a dictionary whenever I come across a new or difficult words for their meaning. It is the only best way to develop vocabulary. [ssh123]
Yeah, dictionary is much easier to use than find the meanings of words on a search engine... Thanks for responding neways... [Lifeless]

I totally agree with consulting to the dictionary. I guess I belong to the dictionary-dependent category huh. heheh. Anyway, I am a big reader too and there are terms that I am not familiar with. Since I mostly read news and all stuffs online, I bookmarked dictionary.com. It is a nice site because it does not only offer dictionary but thesaurus, and encyclopedia. [yamimay]
same here yamimay! i always depend on dictionary.com! and ive used their language translation. its pretty cool! [hillock]

hello! i am a type of person that always seeks answers to questions. whatever it is that i don't understand, i won't proceed unless i find some answers. everytime i read and encounter a word that i am not familiar with i always go to a dictionary, encyclopeia, etc to search for its meaning. i remember, during elementary and high school, i have a long list of words with its corresponding meaning. it helped me a lot especially in improving my vocabulary.. :-) [prEttyNbluE]
Hey, even I had the same thing.. Infact all my class mates had the same thing, the list of difficult words alongwith their meanings.. That really helped me then.. Even now I refer to the dictionary everytime I come across some unknown word... Thanks for responding neways... [Lifeless]

I am coming from Hong Kong, English is not my mother language. But i am the kind of person that i like to guess the meaning rather than referring to the dictionary. However, if an unknown word appear many times, i will go to the dictionary to understand the word. [maryqnn]
Yeah, guessing is done by all of us, u r not the only one here dear.. Most of us like guessing the meaning of the word by reading the sentence over n over again, and then on if v r not able to find the right guess, do v proceed for the dictionary... Thanks for responding neways... [Lifeless]

I usually find it really boring while consulting a dictionary while I'm deep into novels. I just feel like its some kind of interruption. But the bad part is I can't move on unless I find out the meaning of that word. I think in novels words plays the important part and as long as we don't get the right meaning of that word we don't get the right meaning of that novel. so, for me it's important to know the meaning. [diillu]
Yeah, it acts as an interruption ofcourse.. But rightly said that without knowing the meaning of all the important words, it wud be useless to end the novel just by ignoring them... Thanks for responding neways... [Lifeless]

Hi! I don't use dictionary too much while reading cause that's not too convenient and it costs time. So when I read daily newspapers or some magazines,I don't refer to a dictionary and actually I don't think we need to use a dictionary cause the words are not so strange for us or hard to understand. But when I read some masterpieces or some books which are about some special subjects, then I'll refer to a dictionary in order to get a better understanding. [fanji008]
Hi there.. I was just giving an example of where many of us like referring to the dictionary.. And good for u that u don't need one while reading newspapers... Thanks for responding neways... [Lifeless]

I refer to it most of the times, since I am not much good in understanding deeper english words. I love to read, but definitely love to learn about the language also!;) Even here on mylot, there are times that I come across with words that I need to check them on the dictionary to make sure that I'd provide better understanding about the subject being discussed. [raijin]
Nice that u do it, it helps in improving the vocab in a big way... Thanks for responding neways... [Lifeless]

I look for the meaning of a word that is new to me or I don't understand at all using a dictionary. I am like you. I like to understand the meaning of every word I am reading and to know the proper usage of that word in a sentence too. It is also good to have a wide vocabulary. [crazy4mc]
Yeah, very right.. Good vocab always help... Thanks for the response neways... [Lifeless]

Oh yeah me to espically when I was taking home school. I had quit years ago so some of those words stumped me. Like in Biology or even English. [Shaun72]
Yeah, it happens.. U need to constantly bolster ur vocab, or u r bound to loose touch gradually... Thanks for the response neways... [Lifeless]

I would only go to a dictionary if itīs a key word and the sentence is meaningless without it. Most words you donīt know you can get the meaning by the context. I feel going to the dictionary too much would take out a lot of the pleasure I get from reading. After you see the word two or three times it "stays". Thatīs how I learned English, by the way, which is not my native language. [atacamaval]
I understand.. That's exactly what most of us do.. We try to find out the meaning by guessing it, by reading the sentence over n over again, and then on if v r not able to find out a close guess, then only v proceed to the dictinary... Thanks for the response neways... [Lifeless]

em...maybe sometime i will,but not often. [rockyyy520]
Yeah, u only need it when u come across a dificult word, its not always that u require the dictionary... Thanks for the response neways... [Lifeless]

Friend, You are right.Always I refer dictionary when I find difficult to understand a word used in News papers and Books. Then only the purpose of reading will be fulfilled. [ganga472007]
Thanks for appreciating dear.. Even u r right that the purpose of reading can't be fulfilled if v don't understand the complete meaning... Thanks for the response neways... [Lifeless]

I do refer to a dictionary when I read a new word. And more so If I am reading a Novel and I come across New words. [ptrikha1]
Yeah, even I have to refer the dictionary when I am reading a novel and I come across unknown or new words... Thanks for the response neways... [Lifeless]

I don't think we need to refer to a dictionary everytime we encounter a new word. I have a different way of handling it. I try to figure out a word's meaning using the context of it. After 4 or 5 such encounters in different contexts, i would certainly come to know its meaning and mainly its application. Dictionaries, i use only when there's a need for me to know the meaning instantly, like for e.g: myLot discussions. If i come across a new word in mylot and i find it hard to guage its exact meaning in the context of it, i will use the online dictionaries. [I_LUV_U]
That's pretty true.. Even I practise that... Neways, thanks for the response... [Lifeless]

No but I should, and I usually feel guilty about it when I don't do it. Especially when reading classics or philosophy. [Nerophile]
What's there to feel guilty abt dear??? Thanks for the response, neways... [Lifeless]

I enjoy finding word I don't know the meaning of and looking them up. It's one of the joys of reading, for me. Though I tend to google them. Sometimes I then find that this takes me from page to page, and further into something. It's a great way to learn new things! :) [Jobanjo]
Thanks for sharing... [Lifeless]

I do...coz sometimes when you are reading you use to encounter some unfamiliar words, with dictionary by your side you can immediately understand the meaning of that word and next time you encounter it you already know the meaning.. [maylaine]
Yeah, that's pretty true, I agree to it completely... Thanks for the response, neways... [Lifeless]

I rarely use a dictionary when reading any article. I usually get the meaning of it from its context. But in some other cases, I do if the meaning of the word is kinda really really vague for me, only then that I would consult Mr. Webster or Ms. Merriam. [ebtenorio]
That's pretty neat way to refer to these dictionaries... Thanks for the response, neways... [Lifeless]

yes ,i will ,and i have a thick and heavy dictionary.i like it and i dress her a beautiful dress. 'cause i think she helps me and she is my best study partner. and i also think she can give me detailed concrete and exact explaination of some i can't understand. that helps me know more ! [kittypinky]
U and ur dictionary seem to be very close buddies, it seems.. Thanks for the response, neways... [Lifeless]

Dictionary is my hand book all the time and every time i do refer it for the meaning and its a good search engine.and it is good to view dictionay and also a good collection of words will lead to a effective communication also. [juhiram]
Yeah, very true... Thanks for the response, neways... [Lifeless]

i really use the dictionary most of the time when i think there are some words that are new to me or are too difficult form e or i just forgot the meaning of. i really have to look it up in the dictionary. so dictionary is so important to me. this is one book that i really want to see everyday.i really keep my dictionary and take care of it. i really have to use that for a long time. it's been an old dictionary. i would say that dictionary for me is very useful since i am not really familiar with all english words. i still have to look up some words that i have not really encountered. there are some words that i have some ideas of the meaning of the word but i just want to really know the exact meaning of that word. it's not really easy to look it up in the dictionary specially my dictionary is big for me. i have two books of dictionary. since they are divided into two books. i will rather have it in two books than in one bigger book. but still though they have divided the dictionary into two books it still a big books but the good thing about this dictionary i have is that it is really complete unlike those small dictionaries that are very handy and we can carry anywhere. sometimes i really want to haev a cellphone that has some dictionary on it so that i will never have to look it up in my dictionary book since it takes some time to look it up. when i am in a hurry i want to look up so many words ina short time. hopefully that i will be able to learn new words in the future too. since i am not really that good in words. but i really like learning new words and hopefully i will fluent in english too. it is really great if we are able to express ourselves very well in english though it's not really my first language. hopefully that in time i will be fluent in english. i think it is really needed to have a dictionary of our own. if we don't have one we will be too ignorant of many words. so i better be sure that i keep myself up to date to the english words. [ivandcruz]
Everybody is fond of learning new words, and so r u... Neways, thanks for sharing... [Lifeless]

It is a great way of improving your vocabularly and word power! Knowledge is key. I am always doing that, with a dictionary close at hand any words I stumble upon and haven't come across before I will go and look them up, even if I am out I will write that word down or memorize it and on return I will find out it's true meaning. [wolfie34]
So, u r always behind a word until u find its meaning, lol... Right??? Neways, thanks for sharing... [Lifeless]

Yup.. referring in a dictionary is a much safer and faster way of knowing things.. the net is a large database and millions of data are stored there.. that's why it is very hard to find the exact things you are looking for.. :) [atchmon]
But I was not talking of net here, I was taking of the actual dictionary books that we need while we are reading some books... Neways, thanks for sharing... [Lifeless]

Yes I too sometimes refer to dictionary while reading books. It not only tells us the meaning but also a new word is added to our vocabulary. It is really useful. [maapav]
I agree... Neways, thanks for sharing... [Lifeless]

Yes I need to refer dictionary, while I read some thing important and strange in meanings of world. I do not need dictionary while reading some thing important in my national or regional language. But I need dictionary in case of a language which is strange and new for me. I used to search the meanings of words in dictionary while reading something in English. But I need it little studying in English as practice made me a bit perfect. Dictionary is an important basic tool in reading and learning. [sheenshaukat]
I agree to that.. Even I require the use of dictionary in those cases... Neways, thanks for sharing... [Lifeless]

i will refer to the dictionary when i come to the Mylot, because i sometimes will come across a word i don't know, then i will check it.^^ [MagieL]

For me it depends on my mood while I am reading, lol. When I was younger, I dont refer to dictionary. I just get the thought of what the sentence or the author is trying to imply or impart with his book or any other paper. Now that I am old enough, I sometimes do the same thing especially when I feel tired of getting up and getting the dictionary just to read the meaning. But there are also times when there is something in me that tells me to check the meaning of this especially those interesting words that attract me. [bestre]

yes obeviosly i will go for dictionary or else dipends any other freinds i thought better dictionary there will get same word lots of lots of meaning , i will try to study every day atleast 5 new words & that meaning ,sometimes i didnt get the time also then also i lov eto study better oxford new english then no difficulty to leran all standerd english book.. Thax friend yur great discission. Bye take care.,,,,,,,,,, [neethucool]

I always have a dictionary book and an electronic dictionary beside me while I am reading books or writing. This is because I am lack of confidence in my spelling when I am doing some writing. If don't really understand a word in a sentence it might cause miss understanding of meaning if I simply guess it. [lkbooi]

It depends upon how much interest ypu have in the subject you read. For example reading a storybook is different from reading a business management book.I look for dictionary when i go in for serious stuff like what i have mentioned otherwise i dont give attention to meanings which does not rally give me any benefit of understanding [srisubnet]

I use the dictionary all the time when I read and and write I can not spell very well so I need it for that and I like to look words that I don't know i have a pocket dictionary I carry with me all the time you know most of the time though the words I look up I find they really mean nothing they could have used a better word but hea I am not a writer [Jimmy3371]
