When I was a kid the library was the place to go and get books. Times have changed with the internet and TV but libraries are still around. I have two kids and we go to the biblioteca at least once a week, sometimes twice. Do you take advantage of this local staple that you pay taxes for anyway?
[question posted by gitfiddleplayer]
responses and comments:
I do not go to the library normally. There is a big bookcase full of books at the post office that I go to that are from the library. You can take them out on the honor system. You take them, read them, and bring them back when you are done. I actually have one that I need to bring back tomorrow when I go to the post office. [lilybug]
Good thing I sparked your memory. I use to live in an apt. complex and they had a huge library with the same idea. It was cool because we donated some kids books to them when we left. [gitfiddleplayer]
Yes, I do go to our local library, gitfilleplayer. I will check out books and I will take my children there so that they can do the same. Ours is a small library and doesn't have a huge selection on site, but they will order anything I request. The only thing that I don't like about our library is that the librarians are so rude -- they talk loudly all the time! [Transdisc]
Collecting library cards is a neat idea. Unfortunately, we couldn't do that in my state because you have to have proof of residency to get a library card. [Transdisc]
I work in a public library, so I guess I could say that I definitely use it. But, I would use it anyway even if I didn't work at it. Libraries are changing, though. They are fast becoming more like community centers where you can do programs and classes. They're becoming more promoters of education rather than just a depository of books. I get fewer and fewer questions about research and more questions about the computer and the programs our library has. [desertdarlene]
Cool, I snagged a librarian. Most of the libraries I've been in are updating for their communities. I was going to teach english to those who wanted to learn but I moved before the classes started. I'm sure I'll try again though. You're right, the library has become a meeting place for all sorts of activities. [gitfiddleplayer]
I still use my local library, they have many more facilities there than just books, you can borrow CDs, DVDs use the internet for free etc. I don't go as often as I should but when I do I am able to take a few books at a time and keep for a few weeks. Ellie :D [ellie333]
I love the CD selection at the library, I practically get everything they have since I write for a music site. My kids get their limit on DVD each time we go. Its more educational for them to be able to check out books and learn the Dewey Decimal system since we home school. [gitfiddleplayer]
I don't use the public library in the town I live in because the selection and quality of the materials isn't what I'm looking for. We actually use the library from the county that we work in. Because we are county employees, they still let us use the library. My son loves going to the library. He has been going since he was 6 weeks old and gets very exciting about getting to check out books. In fact, he is lying on the floor right now reading a book. [JohnnyP5379]
Mine are watching videos, The Berenstain Bears. My kids have grown up at the library too. They wouldn't know what to do if we couldn't go. [gitfiddleplayer]
hi There. We really don't have a local library near my place but we have local libraries in other cities. It is really nice to have a local library especially when we want to study and get some books to read for past time. [jesbellaine]
Yes, I used to go there when I was in highschool if I need to research something from a very very old book. Cheers! [jesbellaine]
Yes, but I have not been to one in a while. I was there last year... But when I do go, I love to check out horror and suspense books. They are my favorite.. [cream97]
When I was little I lived in the library after I got older life took over and I hardly ever get to go any more. Infact a few weeks a go I went to check out a book and it had been so long since I been there I had to have a new card made because they had switched everything around to a computer scan check out where they scan each book and a receipt comes out and tells you your due date unstead of stamping the books. So yeah that was a surprize. [Apriljess]
i definatly go to the library when i can. yeah looking things up on the net is good but i find that i have more of an appreciation for what i read when i have the physical book in my hand. [Palmerhusky]
I spent a few years in the legal arena and doing research on line was good, but I had to have the book, some people just need to have it in their hands. Don't worry, you're normal. [gitfiddleplayer]
Hello my friend gitfiddleplayer Ji, Base will always remain, or building would scatter like playing cards. So use of library would always remain, as it has got lot many benifits, library could be in floppy/cd/mp and so on, but making use of library has its own charm. I too use library. We have our own mini library at home, which serves our purpose and we keep adding books of our own choices. have a nice time. [chintoo07]
I love going to the library. As a college student after Starbucks it's like my best friend. I take out books that I read for pleasure and I just love it. If the library that I go doesn't have it then I put it on hold online and then another library that has the book that I need sends it to me library and I could pick it up there. Then there are times when I need a book for class and I am able to find it in the library and don't have to spend a fifty or a hundred dollars for a book. When this happens I get really happy because I save money. [ayumitakashi]
Thanks and that is so funny. I think everyone knows me in my library by now. I have been going there for like ten years already. But I really like the library. [ayumitakashi]
I do try to take advantage of it. My taxes pay for it to be there, so I may as well. I tend to just go in when I have a few hours and read the magazines that I don't get at home. I don't actually take books home with me very often unless I'm going on a trip and need a few books to read. [Adelida2233]
I have always been a huge fan of the library. My parents used to take me when I was little, and now I got on my own all the time. I spend a lot of time in the campus library, but visit my local library at least once a week too. [souless_tragedy]
I was told the campus library keeps a record of what you check out but the local library doesn't, who knows, maybe desertdarlene, she works at the hall of knowledge. [gitfiddleplayer]
i totally do. I love the library and go over several times a week. Without it id have to have a 2nd job to afford all the books i read. [saundyl]
Yes, the library is about one block away from my job so I will go there on my lunch hour to read or to use the internet. I mean why not go there because I can check out lots of books, plus do mylot discussions there. There internet is so fast and I love their computers so much. So, yes I do take advantage of using the library systems. They have CDs, DVDs, and books. It's a good resource to check out movies and such. Pablo [callarse1]
A lot of them are starting to do e-books, you can download an audio book to your media player and it will disappear when its due, which is usually 2 weeks. Very cool idea, I've listened to a lot of books that way. [gitfiddleplayer]
I'm lucky; I only live two blocks from it. I love to read, and the library card is free to people inside the city limits, so I use it all the time. We're allowed to check out a total of 5 books at any one period with the book due back 28 days from the day you get it. I manage to read 3-4 books per week. I have to say I'd be lost without our local library. [myklj999]
Me too, the first thing I ask when I get my library card is, "What's my limit". [gitfiddleplayer]
I think library should be taken advantage of. It is a place for discovery specially for young kids who are just unraveling the secrets of the universe. This place can teach respect and discipline. On top of that it is a living museum. [blackmantra_x]
Cool avatar. You're right, discovery is in reading. You can see something but your eyes can't tell you the history or what it can do. [gitfiddleplayer]
It used to be my favourite place when I was in college, actually, it still is, but I don't have much time these days. Reading is my favourite hobby, and I occasionally pop in the library to borrow some books, especially when I don't have money to spend on a new book. I love the atmosphere and the spirit in a library, it is like going back in time, at least, it used to be like that, well, with a new technology, the libraries have changed too. [Natrak]
I do use my lirary and so do my children, especially my daughter she loves books. [Sparkles1969]
lol that's how my children are, they really enjoy looking for books. [Sparkles1969]
I don't go to the library as much as I used to but when my computer died and I was computerless I started going to use their computer to print things out. When I have my baby I will use it more I think as you can hire educational dvd's and they have a toy library too. [chapcity]
Its true, they have so much for kids, but so many kids spend their time in front of the tube or surfing the web. My kids know how to read and what level their at so they don't just "get" books, they get what helps them read better. [gitfiddleplayer]
i have a small library near my house and i regularly visit it.atleast once a week.it is run by a local ngo and they maintain it very well and also update it monthly [praveensirsi]
Very cool, reading is food for the mind. [gitfiddleplayer]
i like visiting libraries..that is in my school days and even before the emergence of internet...but now i seldom or not even remember visiting one..just hooked up in the net... [vanities]
Walk in one, smell the knowledge, you'll get hungry for a book you don't have to buy and that you can keep for two weeks. Try that at Borders or Barnes and Noble. SECURITY!! [gitfiddleplayer]
yes,i do go to the local library, when i was looking for some books i need. but most of the time,i will goole it in internet first.only when i can't find proper books,i will go to. i feel it was not facilitated to go to . [midautumn]
Most of the libraries have a catalog of books on their internet site, try that way too. [gitfiddleplayer]
It's very rare that I will go there and borrow some books! I always end up looking it on the net if I want to learn something! It's like everything that we need and we want to know can be access online nowadays! But,if the library is just a walking distance from where I am, maybe I am always there!LOL! [checapricorn]
Hello gitfiddleplayer, You are correct, LOL! Book can be taken anywhere not my PC!Thanks for that reminders! [checapricorn]
hahaha.. It's been ages since i last went to the library.. I think should have around 14 years.. LOL I remember i used to hate the library when i was a kid, because i dun like to read.. hehe.. Whenever my mom went me to the library togther with my bro, i will just pretend to be browsing thru the books and in reality, i'm just staring at the pages or just flipping thru.. haha.. But now with internet and tv, i dun go to the library anymore.. And like wat u say, u do pay taxes, but we also do pay fines when we have overdue books that we din return.. LOL [kun2349]
haha.. But too bad in singapore, they wun allow u to read off your fine.. Even after more than 10 yrs, they will still accumulate your fine and ask to pay up, when we dun even know where's the book that we've borrowed.. LOL Though i dun go to library anymore, i will buy a book to read instead, so that i can take my time to enjoy it rather than rushing thru it.. haha [kun2349]
There is a library in each of the three small towns surrounding where I live but they are small crappy libraries BUT I do go (was just at one of them last week)....I'd LOVE to be able to go to the Erie/Buffalo library more than once a yr though LOL that place is HUGE! BUT since its an hour away we go there very very rarely (especially with gas prices the way they are)...The Lockport Library is the next best choice which is still probably 30 mins away but we go there ever couple months..I love the library! my kids do too actually [Ravenladyj]
The library in Delray Beach, FL was pretty cruddy. I went twice, first to get a library card and then to return the materials. I know what you mean, see if you can drive the book mobile, that would get you all the books you could handle. [gitfiddleplayer]
The internet has changed the way we research and find out about things, but there is still something about a library that feels so good! I love browsing for a book I'm after, finding that particular book, and leafing through the pages. The internet is more convenient, but doesn't give me the same satisfaction. In fact, I am going to our local Library today to look for a couple of Medical Dictionaries I need for a course I'm doing. I can get them online, but I much prefer to have the book right there in front of me. We pay for these Libraries in our taxes, so let's make more use of them. [abbey19]
The library buys bestsellers right from the publisher. The internet is so impersonal sometimes. I'd rather see my kids noses buried in a book than surfing the web. [gitfiddleplayer]
I used the library much more when my kids were young and they would go to the story times and programs they offered for kids. Now that they are older, we don't use it as much. Pretty much only if they can't find something in their school library or on the internet. [clrumfelt]
When my kids go there nowadays they head straight for the computers with internet connections. Never mind the books. [clrumfelt]
I do take advantage of the local library a lot. I can see the library soon as I walk out of my front door. I don't buy books since my house is small and since I love to read it is perfect for me. I don't even have to get in the car to go to the library. I just walk to the corner cross the street and there it is. I spend a lot of time picking out which books I want to take home with me. [sunshinelady]
Don't ever move! It would be nice to have access like that. [gitfiddleplayer]
i used to visit it before i jpined my job. but now i do not get time. for my job i was away from home. now also its hectic. i have read many books there. [subha12]
They have e-books at the library, you can log in from home and check out an audio book and listen to it on your media player. It's pretty cool and worth a try. [gitfiddleplayer]
I used to use the library for the internet before I got my computer and would sometime pop in to get books but the hours are part time and I work 4/5 days a week so its hard finding the time to pop in when they are open!! I am having to use the library now as I type as my computer is poorly with a virus and hope it is fixable!! The only thing I have just noticed is how slow these computers in the libabry are!! The left click on the mouse doesnt do anything, the screens are tiny, Im having to move the page acroos just to read what I type and the whole discussion!! Also remembering my passwords and usernames for everything is a pain, as on my computer I dont log off so that when I go to use it, I can just go ahead full steam but Im on a public computer so will have to remmebr to log out of everything!! [cinderella2007]
Hopefully your prince charming will fix your home computer. When you get your PC up and running try to write down all your passwords, in case this happens again. One good thing is you're able to use the library computers, even though they are s l o w. [gitfiddleplayer]
I don't go as much as I'd like but I plan to go a lot during the summer. I love libraries and browsing through books, makes a difference to being online whenever I have a free moment. I will get my taxes worth out of them- though I have read two books since I joined last month! [creative_genius]
Pace yourself. [gitfiddleplayer]
Yes! I go to the library at least every other week. I love it, because if I end up not liking the book then it wasnt money gone to waste, and I cant afford to buy a bunch of new books. Also reading is a hobby of mine. So I trully enjoy my trips to the library. [sophiasmom911]
Some libraries have book clubs for those who read a lot. Its probably a great way to meet other people. [gitfiddleplayer]
When I was in school I would go to the library to get books for reports and stuff like that, but now I dont really go to the library, because now it seems kind of boring and the only real thing to do there is use the internet but since they only give you like an hour, and since my parents have a desktop, and me and my fiance have a laptop,we dont have to worry about going to the library to use the computer. [hellcowboy]
Yeah thats cool, and books can be fun at times, even though I have never really like reading,I would much rather wait for the movie to come out lol. [hellcowboy]
I don't use the local library. I find most of what I'm looking for on the internet, and for other reading, I usually buy books on eBay. [newtondak]
You must have quite a collection, you know, you can donate to the library what you don't read anymore, or sell it, either way. [gitfiddleplayer]
I don't go to the library unless I have to. I've only been there a handful of times to work on some school projects. I can't find anything at the library to read so I don't go. I have internet access so I don't use the library unless my net is down or I need to print something but can't quite get it done here at home. I usually buy all the books I want to read. [highflyingxangel]
Oh, yes. My 12 year old daughter is a voracious reader. I couldn't afford to buy her enough books to keep her happy...lol. So we spend a lot of time there. I have been catching up on some of the classics so the copyright has expired on most of them and I can access them online. [vicneedscoffee]
My kids love the library too, they feel like kids in a candy store. They wish there wasn't a limit on how much they could borrow, I'd need an 18 wheeler to keep up. [gitfiddleplayer]
I try to go to the library when I have the chance. Of course the kids go during the summer, and since we don't have a book store where I live, if I am looking for something specific I will go to the library. [mehale]
Me too, I check the library's website to see what's new, then I go get it. [gitfiddleplayer]
We are very frequent visitors of the local library. Even the youngest child with her reading difficulties likes to go there. When the kids were younger they really enjoyed the weekly reading that they had for children. [1grnthmb]
Story time is pretty fun, it lets somebody else read to them so they enjoy it more, not that you reading to them doesn't but I've seen my kids quieter during story time. [gitfiddleplayer]
I use my local libray a lot. I am there usually once a week. I haven't been as much lately, because I have been busy with other things, but will be going soon. I love to read and check out books. I also love to check out DVDs. My local library is even starting to get video games for check out. Since I am not working right now, it helps to be able to check out movies as opposed to renting them. [sharkbiter]
Hope you get some work soon, what type of work do you do? I check out DVD's all the time and I get tons of CD's from there too, half my music library is from the library. [gitfiddleplayer]
I would be lost without our public library! We have a terrific library system here and we use it all the time - books of fiction and non fiction, videos, all for free. What could be better? We even have lots of branch libraries and don't have to go far to get to one. We can reserve a library item on-line and have it sent to whatever branch we want. It will be sent there, we'll be notified by email or phone, and we can then check it out. I'd be bereft without the library.cry [youdontsay]
Me too! I could spend all day at the library, there's something about the atmosphere of learning and literati hanging around. Some libraries have book clubs and social clubs, those are good for everybody. Whenever we move to a new city I get library cards for the kids and myself and we take full advantage of the benefits. [gitfiddleplayer]
When I was younger I used to go to the library all the time. I would check out as many books at once as they would allow. These days I don't go to the library at all, though I do still carry my library card in my wallet. I went last year to get some books out on making your garden appealing to various wildlife, and i'm not even sure I read them all. [heleni0]
That's the beauty of the library, if you don't read what you borrowed it doesn't cost you anything. Plus you can always renew your materials for a little longer. [gitfiddleplayer]
I usually go to the local library with my son once in two weeks. My son likes to read books, especially those on transport vehicles. Each time we borrow 10 books ( maximum ). We make full use of the library ! [curious888]
My kids love it too, books in hand with smiles on their faces. [gitfiddleplayer]
Once in a while when i have spare time [KeitaroHyuuga]
Hey there I love reading but I not long brought a pile of books so I have not been to the libary in a bit a. [loveyoohbaby]
Yes. I often go to public library. When i was a student i was a regular visitor there. Not after joining to work i am not getting time to visit libraries. On weekends i will go and take books and i will be back. [a4aniruddh]
As kids we all were taught the importance of going to the library, I think as adults we forget about that thrill of getting books and reading them. [gitfiddleplayer]
My hubby and I try to take our daughter on a regular basis. She is learning how to read. The library is a useful tool in this process. [ersmommy1]
You bet! My kids love the library, they even get books they'll never read just to have an arm full. I'm glad your daughter is learning how to read, just because its summer I'm still taking my kids to get books, gotta keep their minds sharp.
[redeagle]
Honestly? I never had a library card. I haven't been to the library since I was a child. I tend to borrow books from friends or family, or just buy them. [pixelpixie]
