I was on my way this morning to the office, I brought with me the lessons I have to study for my tutorial, while browsing I notice I felt dizzy and was about to throw up.
Was it because I'm reading while travelling?
I often do this specially on long trips and some friends said it is not good.
What do you think? Do you think I have now an eye problem? cause I notice at my night readings that I get some headache too.
Do you read while travelling too?

It is worst that making a call or sending a text message while driving. Some says that reading on a trip is bad for your eyes, much much worst while driving. It does not just harm you eyes, but it would cost you your life. You need to be careful while driving. It would require all your senses. Something bad might happen if you are not concentrating on driving. [ethel52776]
yeah but of course I am not driving, I was on a cab.Reading while driving is really a NO NO.. [cefaz_21]
i don't read while traveling, makes me dizzy. and it might affect your eyesight as the road gets bumpy often. :) [jdpartosa]
Hello there! I love to read a lot, and when the story is really good its stuck on me whenever I go! I especially like reading while travelling but somehow its really difficult to do. They say you'll get eye problem (and headache) when reading from a moving vehicle because the vehicle vibrates and words and lines jump, so you really have to concentrate intensely on each of the letters. To quote an expert: "We are continually trying to keep our eyes trained on the words and lines we are reading. If different portions of the text keep jumping across the focus of our eyes the vision processing system of our brain is also challenged. But the problemn is not in the fact that the car or bus is moving. It arises because the motion is not smooth." http://www.tribuneindia.com/2003/20031023/science.htm [puchapox]
Maybe you wiggle or move around while you are sitting and working on your computer. LoL. Yes, an eye check up would sound good for you, or maybe you would like to put in protective layer against uv rays on your pc monitor. [puchapox]
this is some thing i can never do! reading while travelling in a bus or a car of for that matter any things that moves throug a road. But i'm ok doing the same in a train coz (mostly when i'm on my way to appear some exams) but what ever be the situation i cannot do that in a car...it makes me dizzy and might throw up. so i think its a bad idea to read while travelling in a car. [earncommunity]
yeah, reading inside a moving vehicle is bad for the eyes. because if you're reading, your eyes get strained, or stressed. it's hard or the eyes to focus on little moving letters (i think =D). cheers! [fake_you]
yeah it's bad. because your eyes can't focus properly on the letters since the car is moving, that's why you feel dizzy. sometimes i do this, when i have an exam, but i really don't get to study much, because i'll end up with a headache, and in far worse condition for taking an exam. [swirlz]
well i hope you werent reading while you were driving (yes, i have heard of that!!) I have done a fair amount of reading while a passanger in the car and it has never bothered me, but on the other hand, my mom cannot as the motion makes her feel ill. [cher913]
Reading while riding a car?... I think it is not a good habit.... we know that in riding a car, we are in moving position... and it is not god for us, when we are reding something while our eyes should moving, because when we're reading our eyes should focuse on the text we're read... [chim_mustakim]
I can never read while traveling. I will get severe headache if I try to. I noticed this when I was seven years old. My father took me to the national library and I brought some books to read at home. I was so excited and couldn't wait to reach home. So I straight away read in the car. Suddenly I felt very dizzy and later it turn into severe headache. Until today I can never read in an automobile. [ladysurvivor]
I do a lot of reading especially on buses, taxis and trains. Especially on long journeys. I feel that besides looking out at the same sceneries and surroundings I can best make use of that time to catch up on some readings. I think what you encounter basically may be some form of motion sickness (sometimes one can get nauseous without reading on the road as well) and / or some other factors i.e. stress and diet related issues. I could suggest that you look up and out once in a while to break the monotony same goes when u are on the computer. And rest when you are stressed out. Hope this might help. [skysuccess]
Reading while riding...not driving :)seems to be ok for some, but not all. I drive a bunch when I am with the kids, but when we go out of town with my husband, he drives. This is the only time that I can manage to read without jumping up and doing other things. I have no problems reading while riding in a car. My teenager always says that it makes her nauseous and dizzy. My 7 year old says the same thing. It must be that some people are more sensitive to the motion than others. You may want to try different things, such as eating before you go. I know that if I don't eat anything in the morning, I am more senitive to things like motion. Try eating a bit, if you are not doing so already. It may also depend on the individual vehicle you are in. Some ride more smothly, while others bounce up and down more (even if it is smooth bouncing). Bottom line is, if YOU get nauseous when you are riding and reading, it isn't good for YOU. Hope it gets better for you! Trisha [shoppingwithmoms]
I can't read in a car or bus, only on the train or plane. I get dizzy easily and start to feel sick too. [maddysmommy]
NO, because we have a freedom of what we do in our daily life . However, we will not read as clearly in all the letters we read because of unbalance positioning of our eyes and body.. [roland_l0pez]
reading while in a moving vehicle is a bad idea it can ruin your good eyesight.its not safe or recommended to read a newspaper while in public bus. [rabez69]
I don't think it's good for us to read while travelling ,especcially for our eyes.So I never read when drive. [yuxuancrazy]
I think it is, because when I'm done I feel mildly nauseous sometimes. Which isn't usually supposed to be a good thing. That, and my eyes start to hurt. [herbalicious]
I am one of those who are guilty of doing this thing, reading, even drawing or writing while inside a moving vehicle. And like you, I felt the same way with my eyes, I already wear glasses/contact lenses. And sometimes, although not everytime, specially when I'm wearing contacts, and it's a bit of a bumpy ride, my eyes get watery sometimes, I even feel dizzy and nauseated and at time I also get headaches. I can't help it though, to pass the time specially for long travels I do still read. [chaime]
that's what I'm thinking..I need that time to catch on lessons so I read but I guess I have to stop it and wioll try to rest while on the road.:) [cefaz_21]
sometimes i used to read in the school bus to and from school and i noticed i got physically sick and dizzy? vertigo? well, i get books on Tape and CD's if I have to take a long trip..but i never read while i drive...even a map..as this is dangerous for everybody..but I have seen people reading and driving and not a map but a book! I have also see a lot of monkey business on the interstate and that is a no no..but i am guilty of this a few times but no more as my wife frowns on this kind of stuff. [asawako48162]
Nope. I don't read while I'm travelling. It gives me headache too. I think it's because the vehicle movement. Not always. I feel OK when I'm reading on a motorbike though. I mean, when someone's carrying me behind them on a motorbike. I can read like that. But definitely can't read on bus, car, or train. They are too shaky I think. Makes me wanna throw up if I force myself to read for a long time. [princess_ines]
on a motorbike? wow! I think it's a more bumpy ride..it would be more hard for me to read while on a motorbike..:) [cefaz_21]
I can read fine in a car and not get carsick. But my sister can't. And I had a friend who used to have to take medicine so she wouldn't get dizzy and throw up in the car. But it doesn't bother me, and I'm very glad it doesn't. : ) [AmbiePam]
It's called motion sickness. It is the same thing you would get on a boat, or in a rough plane. You confuse your eyes, & brain. What you get at night may just be tired eyes, or not enough light, or you may need glasses. But glasses will not help the problem while you are driving. I was very glad to see that you were in a cab, & not doing it while driving! [fairly4458]
I read in the passenger seat on road trips all the time. Sometimes I do experience some small measure of dizziness. Usually, if I just put the book down for 10-15 minutes I'm fine. It's a great way to pass the time and get some reading in, that's for sure. [wiccania]
I never get morion sick unless I'm trying to read, so i don't know if it's bad but it's uncomfortable.Unless, ou're driving, then it's bad. [pendragon]
Some people get travel sickness and also get headaches when reading because it takes a lot of concentration and when you are travelling as well, it does make it worse. However I don't have this problem and when I'm on the train I am always reading or doing my crosswords to keep off the boredom. You might want to get your eyes checked, they do advise going to the opticians every three years. [wolfie34]
I've heard a lot of people tell me that I should never read while in the car, because it can make you sick. But, it all depends on your body. Every body is different. If you feel that you cannot read while in the car, I would suggest not to do it in the future. [missjackie]
Looking down will cause your inner ear to have a problem. As long as you travel while looking out of the window it should be fine. I was that way when I was a kid. Out grew it. Agreed you should get your eyes checked and see if you are ok or if you might need some glasses. Good luck with this. [Willowlady]
I don't think it was because you were driving and reading. You should get your eyes checked just to be on the safe side. But I will say, driving while reading is very dangerous. As you said, you were glancing at it. There was a car in front of me today for about 2 miles on different bendy roads, and he practically sat with a newspaper on the steering wheel. That drove me mad. I knew he wasn't watching where he was going cause the fool was taking up two lanes on every bloody road. Never a policeman around when you need one. [slarkin71]
You may have an eye problem or something going on. I know many people who do get nauseaus reading while riding and some who do get headaches also from reading alot. I would definitly consult a doctor. [sid556]
Like you, I get very nauseaus and dizzy when I try to read while in a moving vehicle. I also get a very bad headache. Now whether it will actually harm one's eyes to read while in a moving vehicle, I do not know. I just know that I can't do it! It does stand to reason that the eye muslces would have to work harder to stay focued on the lines of text as they wouldn't be held stationary due to the movement. [crazynurse]
Please tell me you were not driving the car? I am going to assume you were not driving. When I am in a car I pretty well have to stare straight ahead or I will get sick so no reading for me. I know a lot of people you can read a book for a short while before feeling sick and they will until they do feel sick. I also know a couple of people that when they go on long trips they can read all the way there if they are not the ones driving! I wish I could read in the car. [CoffeeAnyone]
LoL ,I knew I should of deleted those first two comments of my post. Of course you weren't driving! LOL I knew that! [CoffeeAnyone]
Well are you driving also? lol--- I used to drive and have a text book open studying on my way to college several days- Had to pass them tests and who has time to study when you are out the night before- no really now I don't drive and read- I can read when someone else is driving I have no problem with that- I don't think it is bad for your eyes. [KrisNY]
i experience that as well... when i am reading in the car, i also get giddy and want to throw up... so i think it is not about your eye problem... but it is more about reading while the car is moving is not good... that's what my parents tell me as well... [lingli_78]
I can not read while I am traveling in a car as it makes me feel really ill, I get dizzy and get a headache. I dont know how anyone reads in a car if it makes them feel how i feel when I do it! [Cassy1976]
I would LOVE to read in the car. But that's a quick way for me to get car sick. I can Cross Stitch in the car however & I have been known to many many times. [ElicBxn]
Yes,I think it is very bad habit to sit on moving car while reading because due to jerking and movement of your car can increase the power of your eyes.Reading in Cars is not at all a good habit as it can sometimes also lead to accidents. [coolcat123]
It is bad doing anything in the car. If you are driving, you really should be focused on the road. [rogue13xmen13]
As long as you are not the one driving, I think that it should be okay, unless you have some kind of special problem. I have always read on long rides and I also see a lot of people reading and studying on buses and trains, so I don't see where it would be a problem. [Rozie37]
May be it is a problem If one reads too much in very fast moving vehicles. [ptrikha1]
Yes, reading while travelling is really bad for the eyes. Do not read while travelling. You can become car sick. Just enjoy the journey, relax yourself, or listen to music etc but do not read while moving. [lavenderbloom]
I love reading while travelling, to the point that i'm used to the headache, i don't feel it anymore, lol [ucancallmedissy]
It is not a good idea to read while travelling. Because f jerkings and variability of distance between the book and your eye can cause serious damage. [subhamm]
I have been reading while travelling for some time now. While I had for long heard advices on "Not reading while Travelling" , so far I have not had problems.May be the effects vary from person to person. But I do make sure that when a Car is moving very fast 60 Kmph or more , I take breaks and skip reading for some time. Another thing you can do is : If you have to travel 1 hour or more ( assuming you are not driving ) , read at Red Lights and when the car is moving slowly - say 30 Kilometres Per Hour . And do not read when Car is moving too fast. Also take breaks . That way I think you can read while travelling in a way that does not negatively impacts you . [ptrikha1]
that was a good advice..at least you can still read while the car is moving slowly and not totally waste your time sitting there. thanks! [cefaz_21]
I don't think it is bad to read while sitting in car. Yes it is true that person who is driving will feel bad or will loose attention if he is friend or relative but if he is driver no problem. Whenever i drive i feel that person who is sitting with me should exchange views and talk to me so that i must feel active and did not feel sleepy. [smartbrain69]
I really feel that this is where you need to listen to your body. I have been reading in the car since I could read (which was before I went to school) and I never get sick from it. Our whole family is like that, except my mom, and my dad ussually drives so I do not really know about him. My mom gets sick just by looking at us reading in the car. She gets sick just from looking at a car, mind you. So listen to what your body is telling you and do not read if it makes you sick, but I think it differs from person to person. [keda69]
I always read while travelling. why not? I like reading and very very like reading. No day withot reading. Read always gives me knowledge, and that's important for me. So,....enjoy your reading while travelling [tute_cute]
To be frank,I'm very surprised about what you said. You often read books while driving! That is what I can never do.Of course it's bad to read while in the car. It's bad not only for your eyes, but also for your spirit. You may feel tired often if you do so for a long time. It's not a good idea to study while driving.,you can't study anything while in the car.Besides, the most important thing is that it's very dangerous to you and others who are driving too at the same time, especially the one who is near to you.So in order to avoid such dangerous situation, you'd better not do so from now on. [michelleWJ]
I try to bring a pocketbook when I travel long distance but usually fail to read while in transit because I'd enjoy looking at the view outside and observing people. I've heard many times people say that it is not good to read in a moving vehicle. It will really make you dizzy. I think there is some truth to this. [funny52f]
Of course, and I seldom read in the car, because the car would shake, so read on the eye harmful, but also a long time, it would dizziness...lol... [xiuluoelly]
I read when travelling in a car and I have no problems but many people do. I believe your problem is related to you inner ear which is also the cause of motion sickness. However you should have your eyes checked if you are getting headaches. Because you are focusing on such a narrow area when you read a lot your eyes are not being exercised and I believe this can lead to some problems. Sometimes eye exercises can help and you can delay the need for glasses. [bhappy2]
when i was in college i used to do the same...reading while travelling, especially when i had no chance of reviewing some of my lessons... i'd better do this than to get zero on our examinations or on our recitations.. but now... i am working already as much as possible i am trying to avoid.. i am trying to avoid but if there are text messages.. i can't help myself do the same thing again... just an advice never read while in the car...coz at this very moment i have this eye problem. reading while travelling and long exposure to computers are the main cause of this... [zhamvady]
very bad but sometimes you are on the run to a meeting and have to have some last review of the project and have to read it while driving. [livadas]
yeah, it happens sometimes when you cannot just waste your time there sitting knowing you still have tons of pages to read. :) [cefaz_21]
yeah. i think its bad for the eyes to read while riding a moving vehicle. me, i cant stand reading or texting while inside a moving car. it upsets my stomach and sometimes it makes me wanna vomit. ^__^;; [secretbear]
Honestly, I cannot read while travelling since I can remember. If I was sitting in the travelling car, the moment I started reading, I would get dizzy immediately. Seriously, I will get dizzy as well if the car is turning around the roundabout more than 2 times continuously. I was treated 'carsick'. But I think there must be something wrong with me. [Madona1]
I don't read in the car. It makes me sick to the stomach and gives me a headache, I think it has to do with my eyeballs bouncing with the car and the text in my hand, or a little left over carsickness from baby-hood. I don't drive either. However, distracted drivers can be a menace on the road. Be it they reading, texting, yacking on cellphones or car passengers. They can and do cause accidents as there is usually more than one distracted driver on a single road and invariably they meet... [CraftyCorner]
Whenever I get the chance to be a passenger instead of the driver, I'll read just bout anything. Books, newspaper, mail, magazines. My only problem with it is I tend to get sleepy while reading. [blackbriar]
Yes, I think it is bad to read while in the car, especially if you are driving :) I think as a passenger it makes one prone to motion sickness and headache. I do not think that it can ruin your vision, however. [Modestah]
I think it is bad for the eyes and besides if you will read while driving, it can get you into an accident. I was told that I should never ever read while I am inside a car, whether I am driving or whethere I am just riding. Our eyes will be so much affected by this action. [hersmart4ever]
Hi. Well I have tried reading in the car, as a passenger and its annoying, because the car and its vibrations shake the book around and make a little difficult to lock onto the words... I would never try to read and drive at the same time though... [Nardz13]
I think this can happen.. I don't know about any type of permanent damage.. Perhaps you could use some reading glasses.. At age 52, I can't read a thing without reading glasses! And haven't been able to for quite a while. - Or perhaps you need some corrective lenses, as I think sometimes, headaches can indicate this.. [flowerchilde]
