Does Reading Make You Tired Or Keep You Awake

It used to keep me awake, but of late it does seem to make me sleepy! I know many people use it as a way to get to sleep, although I can't fall asleep with a book open. I do get sleepy eyed and close it to fall asleep.

Reading always makes me feel tired, which is too bad since I really like reading. Most of the work I've done for the last 15 years or so involved a lot of reading, so I was always getting sleepy at work and would have to get up and walk around to avoid falling asleep at my desk! [Idlewild]
It never used to make me tired... but lately it sure does! I wonder why the change. What stinks is.. reading IS my job! lol I do book reviews. I have to read to do a review! [hockeygal4ever]

Reading does make me sleepy but I'm much worse in front of the tv... whether we're watching a regular show or have a DVD running, I can be out like a light in very short order. I miss the ends of so many movies that way! LOL I can be in bed, reading a book (man... when was the last time I was able to do THAT??? sighhhhh) and I won't fall asleep for quite awhile. [thinkingoutloud]
I cannot for the life of me sleep with the tv on. It's a thing I have that I think comes from the ex ALWAYS falling asleep in front of the tv. Used to annoy me to death! lol [hockeygal4ever]

I read evey night when I go to bed, I've been doing this for years.Reading makes me sleepy.I really enjoying reading. [babystar1]
A lot of people do use it as a form of relaxation. I too do read, every night before bed.. but that's actually what I do for a living so I read as often as possible. [hockeygal4ever]

It makes me go to sleep. Even sitting at the computer and reading things alot of the times does. [Thoroughrob]
The computer Tires me a lot.. I think it's the glare. I have to get up and move around all the time! lol [hockeygal4ever]

well it depends on the books i read. if it some book i like, that which excites me i'll read it for more than 5-6 hrs non stop. If the books do make me sleep and if it's something important then i just switch on the tv and surf the channels for some good show and watch it for some 10 mins. and then when i feel refreshed again it goes to the books. [limo_2005]

If I take a book and sit in my rocking chair with a nice warm blanket to cover me, I can fall asleep before the third page is read. My husband tells me that I should bring reading material to the beach. I do not practice the habit of reading at the beach because I want to stay awake to enjoy the scenery. You can't view the ocean with your eyes shut! [ElusiveButterfly]
Yup, had them too. [ElusiveButterfly]

Well I stay up for more. I stay up just to read what lies ahead. Sometimes out of exhaustion I just sleep with the book on my face. [pushkarfeatshinoda]

I can relate, but only if I am on the computer a lot. I have to take breaks once in awhile. [countrygirlny]

Reading always makes me sleepy even in the middle of the day. I am not a good sleeper, so if I am reading a good book at night, after I have had a couple of hours sleep I will start reading it again, and so on until I have finished the book. Now wonder I am so tired during the day. [Alexandria37]

Reading posts on mylot.com makes me sleepy. Many a time I'ved logged off and went and took a nap, then came back to the site afterwards. [EdwardF]
The computer does that to me too. [hockeygal4ever]

Reading makes me very sleepy. No matter where I am-- I can pull out a 50 page document at work and get tired and droopy eyed by the 10th page. Not good. I make myself read when I'm overtired and cannot fall asleep. I feel my eyes getting droopier and droopier and usually end up falling asleep with the book on my face- on the pillow and my glasses still on. If its a good book I try to sit up and read- but I still end up sleepy. [KrisNY]

Reading of course keeps me awake. once i start reading a book i get so engrossed in that book that i dont feel like eating or sleeping. i feel like completing that book the same day. i just love reading books. it not only gives loads of knowledge and entertainment but also helps u in improving ur reading skills. so every person should develop a habit of reading books very often. [elixer]
I'm a huge reading fan too. It normally wakes me up too and then I don't want to put it down... but lately it just relaxes me so much I am ready to zonk out! [hockeygal4ever]

That depends on the book. If is a great one I can sleep until I'm done reading it. If is a good book I put it down when I'm starting to fill sleepy. [scarfaceboston]

I used to read before bedtime, at times. I don't remember it ever making me particularly sleepy, though. But then, I'm the type where it takes me awhile to fall asleep, either way. I really can hardly ever just lay down and fall asleep in a couple of minutes. So it probably takes more than reading to calm my system down. *laugh* It's definitely a good way to relax and prepare oneself for bed, though! ^_^ I really should get a new library card so that I can do some more reading before bedtime. I miss reading! ^_^ [shywolf]

For me it depends what im reading. If im reading something by Terry Pratchett for example ill be laughing far too much to sleep, but generally i must addmit i can sleep very easily when starting to read an academic text or something like that [ESKARENA1]

it depends on what im reading...if the book is interesting it keeps me awake but if not..haha. i go to sleep instead. [pongskie]

for me is depending with the story a read in that book, if it horor is keep me a weak, if famely story make me sleep hehehhe. [mamatika]

reading keeps me afresh and i do get tired by reading only when i am really tired due to working late in the office.otherwise i keep on reading until i feel i need to sleep... [xyla_v]

If you are reading a book of your interest and in the korning time, you maynot get sleep for long time as the book is of your interest although you might get tired of readina nd if you read a book sleeping, then chances of getting sleep is little more as you are bound to get tired reading and if it is night time, then definitely you will get sleep.... [alienstar]

it neither keeps me awake or makes me tired. reading makes me sleep. it's my way of making myself sleep easily. at night when i go to bed, i read first then after a while, you'll just find me sleeping safe and sound [the_dutchess]

Reading a book that I want to read usually keeps me awake for at least a little while. Reading a textbook is the quickest way for me to go to sleep though! Unfortunately! [Sharuzi22]

When I read in bed, I usually will feel sleepy faster unless it happens to be a very exciting book then sometimes it doesn't work. [hopeful28]

I have no idea about the tiredness or being awake reading books. But when ever I tried to do so, i just go into deep sleep. It had been a tough times to me to read books rather books regarding my subjects. Thats the reason i have to been listening to my lectures rather than reading. [nrmrreddi]
I enjoy audio books a lot if I'm just too tired to really read. [hockeygal4ever]

It really all depends on the book. If it's a good book - I forget that I'm tired and get enraptured and realize half the night is over and I've finished it. If it's school books I have to sit up completely straight and have no distractions or I will fall asleep with my face in the book. I do good in school - it's just hard reading sometimes. [Withoutwings]

Reading at bedtime makes me tired... However, if it is a good book, it doesn't matter how tired I am until I finish it! I just can't put down a good book, even if my eyes are half shut!!! [fieryeyedwriter]

Being incapable of much movement, I try to spend my day by either reading or watching movies.Ifind that when I read a thriller,I cant sleep eventhough I feel sleepy.I forcibly keep myself awake as long as possible when reading a pageturner. So all I can say is that the right type of book keeps me awake, while a slow and descriptive book makes me sleepy. [destiny_12]
It can be frustrating when you KNOW you should be sleeping and cannot put that dang book down!!! LOL [hockeygal4ever]

During the day, I don't feel tired whilst reading, but I like to read at bedtime, as this is a very pleasant way to drop off. [Denjgi]

It depends... When I don't like so much the book I usually get tired and suddenly asleep but when the book is interesting I can read it all the night without get tired ^^ [VanessaOwL]

I too experience feeling sleepy if read a book on the bed but not when sitting. Sometimes my eyes kind of get tired and it makes me lie down, I wake up to find the book beside me. [Iqram538]

If I read during the day, then I usually do stay awake and really get into the book. But I don't get a chance to read during the day very often :( I do however read before I go to sleep every night. It's my way of unwinding after a long day. It does make me sleepy but that's the whole idea of ready then anyway! [Bev1986]

I never feel asleep over a book. It is never a sleeping pill for me, but something to keep my grey cells alive. But I don't know what will come of it in the future. Now, if I go to bed with a book, it is possible that I sit lie away late in the night. [ashjoe76]

I find reading for a bit can help me to sleep. I find I get more tired but it also depends what i am reading. if it is something that is not upsetting or too thought provoking then that is ok. If its something upsetting then that would keep me awake. [organiclady35]

it depends on the book that i am reading. if i am hooked with the book, i usually stay awake even in the wee hours of the morning. but if i am not interested in what i am reading, when i only read because it have to, i fall asleep with the book in front of my face! [pandak]

i always use books to get sleep soon.ha ha [rubininidhish]

i always read at night in my bed so dat i ve a sound sleep.... reading always make me feel sleepy i dnt know why....> [sajila]

Reading makes me tires especially reading my book in school, it is so boring. I prefer to read articles online than reading a book. Sometimes whenever I read something I fell asleep. [faylinn_chaeli]

Depends on the book. Usually, if it is one of that books that "grab" you I stay awake. But there are some books that could be prescripted in the place of sleeping pills. [jricbt]

Reading a book will always keep me awake. But now with age, I feel sleepy by reading a book. [betterlife]

i don't have met things before [chaptermm]

when I read the book I like ,I donnot feel tired. [loveworld]

I've heard a joke "if you can not sleep try to read a book". some people can get sleepy when they read a book including me... [iwan_tm02]

it depends on the book i am reading, if i am reading my course book then i usually feel sleepy but of course if its a book of interest i can read it the day long [gharinder]

sometimes it keeps me awake while the other times i go off to sleep after reading a few pages. [Tanushree4444]

If I read for a long time, I get sleepy. I usually read before I go to bed, but if it's a really suspenseful book, I sometimes stay up too late reading even though my eyes are tired. I like to read scary books sometimes, too and they don't make me sleepy. [berna123]

Reading relaxes me. Eventually, it does make me sleepy. Reading is one of the best ways to relax and it's enjoyable to boot. A good book and a lovely cuppa (tea) is heaven. Cheers! Best Regards, True London, England [truebrits]

awake, most of the times they keep me awake especially adventure books sometimes i would only stop if the rooster crows or i can already see sunrise [Mathurin]

It depends on the book. Sometimes a really good or suspenseful book only keeps me awake longer. I often read before going to bed and it usually helps me get to sleep because it occupies my mind. It's kind of like falling asleep in front of the TV. [brimia]

Reading generally keeps me awake, because I really get into the story and I don't want to go to sleep. I want to finish the chapter or sometimes, the book. [rmuxagirl]

Depends on the book entirely, when I'm involved with a Fredrick Forsyth, or Colin Forbes, or Mary Higgins Clark, or Agatha Christie or Erle Stanley Gardner, or P. G. Wodehouse book I'd never fall sleep until I finish it. I'm too excited following the story to worry about sleep. On the other hand if I sorely need to sleep and am not feeling sleepy I'd just pull out my school Physics book and try to read through any theory, I'm out like a baby before I'm through 10 lines! [gbala9]
Understandably! Reading a text is far less exciting then reading a good book! LOL [hockeygal4ever]

it depends on the book. if it's a title that i particularly like, there's no way i could fall asleep. if anything, it'd be other way around cause i just can't stand not knowing what happens next. [trionyxx1]

Reading a book always make me fresh and my tiredness escaped. I like to read Poetry Books during my sleep time, but I don't go to sleep until I stop to read the book. Book is a wonderful friend. I love it. [samimkardar]

Reading in bed use to keep me up too. Now it makes me sleepy. I can actually fall asleep reading and have smacked myself in the head many times with a open book. [courtlynne77]

I do n't feel tired during reading books and like to read story books and often read them but also read my course books too. I myself read books to keep me awake or when i feel that i am unable to sleep then i start reading books. I soon feel that my eyes r getting close and i sleep soon and start enjoying dreams. Lolz.
