Edgar Allan Poe

Has anyone ever read his poems or stories? I have liked him since I was in middle school. I just recently bought A book called Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. What stories or poems do you like by him? I like "Tale Tell Heart" myself and also "House of Usher" What are some other tells or storiesa that you like by Edgar Allan Poe?

the only Edgar Allan Poe Poem I know is The Raven. Here is a link to the Poem. http://www.online-literature.com/poe/335/ [coco526]
Yeah The Raven is a great story that he wrote thanks for your response [Shaun72]

Tell Tale Heart is one of my favorites along the Raven. [k1tten]
Yeah I love Tell Tale Heart that is the story that got me to liking his other stories. The Raven is good also. [Shaun72]

'The Tell-Tale Heart' is probably one of, if not the, best story from the genius mind of this deeply troubled author. 'The Cask of Amontillado' (short story), 'For Anne' and 'The Raven' (both poems) are also great works that should be read by everybody! [tweakpotter]
yeah I know that is the sad thing about it [Shaun72]

I liked the pit and the pendulum. the Raven, there was one about being walled up, but I don't remember it. Poe was a strange man... sort of like Stephen King of today. I like Stephen King. Poe was very dark, indeed. [charlene2350]
I think that is way I like reading Poe is because he is like Stephen King. I mean his poems and stories get to me and I enjoy them. [Shaun72]

The 'Tell-Tale Heart' and 'The Purloined Letter' are my favorites. Both stories make my hair stand on end! [lilibetha]
I enjoyed 'The Purloined Letter' as well. [arkaf61]

I actually got to read his poems and stories though they are not my cup of tea because I find most of them gloomy and dark. I like best his poem 'Annael Lee' because it talks of his love though again it's a sad poem with his love ending up dead and his comedy 'Never Bet The Devil with Your Head'. [cdparazo]
I have never heard of that poem or story of his either. Maybe it is in this new book that I have. Yeah some of his stories are depressing but like he's horror stories. [Shaun72]

Never saw them here, I should check out ... [getmpfree]
They are stories and poems worth reading. I like reading what he wrote. [Shaun72]

I read his books when I was a student. But frankly speaking if I could choose whether to read him or not, I wouldn't. I admit, he's a very good writer, his descriptions are so vivid and specific, but the plots of his stories are so awful (perhaps I'm a too sensible person) that I could hardly read till the end. [JuliaPan]
Thanks for your response anyhow. I have a best friend that says about the same thing. [Shaun72]

I also have Poe's complete works. I've had them since I believe it was my senior year in high school, so that would be almost 40 years. Tell-Tale Heart is one of my favorites, as well. I love the melodic names of the heroines in his poetry, "Lenore" "Annabelle Lee" and such. He was a dark but interesting man and his literature certainly reflected that. [cremechese]
He has alot of really neat poems and stories that he wrote. 40 years is a long time. thanks alot for your response. [Shaun72]

The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket is my favorite novel by Edgar Allan Poe. This book has it all a shipwreck, mutiny, cannibalism and a seagull pecking the flesh off of a corpse. It's all good. [shopgirl]
cool I am glad that it is interesting to you [Shaun72]

I've read several of his stuff and to be honest, I find the way he wrote quite lyrical. It's catchy and sticks with you, however, I'm not partial to him. I honestly find some of his stuff, strange and not quite as 'scary' as people claim them to be. I guess that's just me. [highflyingxangel]
well thanks for your response anyhow. [Shaun72]

I really like the "Black Cat" and "annabell Lee" and "the raven", most people don't think of those two when they hear Edgar Allan Poe :) [boxervseible]
Actully "Black Cat" is really good and "The Raven" is great also. [Shaun72]

In school I loathed poetry. That's because I live in a nice black and white world of hard absolutes. I don't live in that pastel world of etherial fluff that poets live in. The best I EVER did in that section was meaningless jibberish that I was rewarded for, but had absolutely no idea what I had just done. I never did get any of that. My teacher would ask us some mind trippy question about what the author was trying to say. OMG! The guy's been dead for a hundred years. How should I know??????? And then I would be told to look at it. It's plainly there... I might as well have been looking at the bunnies in the clouds at that point. I remember my eyes suddenly get so hot you could have lit a smoke on them, and my mind went absolutely blank. Panic would set in, my heart would thump. Other kids would snicker and titter around me. I wanted to just die. Oh how I hated poety. I also remember after that the "Diary of Ann Frank". That book was the most boring book I have ever tried to read. I am well aware of what she and her family went through. Such horror cannot be put in words. But I waded though two chapters while I fought to remember the characters in the two chapters while trying to read the third chapter... I finally took my book to the front of the classroom and flopped it on my teacher's desk and simply said to her..."ZERO!" And before she could get a word out I went back and sat quietly in my desk. That was also the same year that I made a stink about 'opinion' questions being marked for scoring on your report card. You cannot objectively mark someones opinion. You can either agree or disagree, but because it is an opinion, you cannot mark objectively. That's why politics makes so many enemies out of what was friendship. The opinions clashed. And validity of opinion is like that Rose. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Good post Shaun. [freebc]
I wasn't that crazy about to many poets myself. I think I like Edgar Allan Poe because of the mystery that he wases in alot of his poems and stories other then that I agree with you it is boring. I have tried writing my own poetry when I have gotten mad or down. Some liked it some didn't. Thanks for your response anyway :) [Shaun72]

The Bells! Read that poem, that is, if you haven't already. It has a wonderful flow. [vwlssknght]
I have never read it but I will look for it thank you. [Shaun72]

"Annabelle Lee" is a poem he wrote to his wife/cousin after she died of tuberculosis and was one of the first poems I ever read. My mom taught me read poetry in third grade and she started with that one. I also think you should read "Murders in the Rue Morgue". Poe is considered the father of the modern detective story because of that short story and well, any story about an ape is fun. [moonshadow68]
I didn't know he wrote that. [Shaun72]

i never heard of that ,i'll search it from the net. [una1129]
Yeah Edgar Allan Poe was a poem writer and a great story writert. [Shaun72]

There was a time in my life that I really liked Edgar Allan Poe a lot. I used to love "the raven" and "the bells" and found "the murders of the rue morgue" quite interesting. I think it was a dark phase LOL I still enjoy his poems and stories but not the same way I used to. And I still think he is a a gifted poet. I just don't have him as my favorite anymore :) [arkaf61]
that's understandable. He just stands out to me. I have a best freind that says the same thing. [Shaun72]

i also have a book about short stories and poems of edgar allan poe... i got into buying it coz i like Annabel Lee a lot... i also like Black Cat... i forgot the title of the other stories but i think he is a great writer and poet... [shadowcat_018]
That's cool I am glad you did. Yeah that is way I liked it so much myself. [Shaun72]

i love his stories especially the tell tale heart. that is the first mystery story i ever idolized. eventhough it was just a short story he he. the father of the modern mystery is edgar allan poe. Edgar Allan Poe remains today one of the most-beloved mystery writers in history. His contributions to literature and the mystery genre cannot be underestimated. hands down to edgar allan poe!! [mskzalameda]
I agree. I love his writtings and Tale Tale heart is my favorite also. I learned about him in English I guess because he was a poet. [Shaun72]

Yeah, but I've only read the Cask of Amontillado and The Raven. Poe's one of the best story writers. We made a film out of those two (our prof told us too and it was damn hard!). It sucks due to certain circumstances we can't avoid but at least it was appreciated. Poe is a classic writer. I like the way there's brilliance in his works, how genius his works are.^_^ Reading and understanding the Cask, it made me want to read a lot more of his works! Ahahaha... Thank God for libraries ahehehe... [aeriadensice]
The Ravan is great I have never read hi Cask of Amontillado. I am glad that there are liberaries to Poe is one worth reading thsnks for your comments [Shaun72]

Hi Shaun: I have read them all. I have kept all of his books because I like them all. Ivor [TheSpy]

I am not a great reader of stories, novels or poems unfortunately and am much more comfortable with a referrence book. My favourite horror movies however are all Poe based stories such as The raven and Pit and the Pendulum, even through the medium of film the dark mind of Poe impresses itself on me, I think you have spurred me to start reading! [stmech0]
I got to liking him from the movie Tale Tell Heart after seeing it at school then I got to liking his poems and stories once I started reading them. [Shaun72]

I liked the House of Usher. It's been so many years since I read his poems in school growing up. I think there was one about a cat or something. And "Beware the Jabberwocky," was that Poe? I don't know. Maybe I need to borrow your book as these 20 years seem like 100 to me! [runningman72]
The House of Usher Poe wrote. I have never heard of "Beware the Jabberwoccky". "House of Usher" is about a man who is sick that he comes to visit. [Shaun72]

I love Edger Allan Poe...I will search for this book that you now own...He was a brilliant writer... [RESSIE0168]
Yeah he defintly is.Of all the older and classic writer's he is my favorite. [Shaun72]

If you like the Tell-Tale Heart there is a new movie coming out updating it with Josh Lucas starring...it is way different though than the original plot, check out this article on it: http://www.terrortube.com/html/Lucas-and-Tell-Tale-Heart.html [ArsonCuff]
That looks really neat thanks a lot for this link. [Shaun72]

I have not read him for quite a while. I did read the Raven and the Fall of the House of Usher, in fact, I might have that book, but are not so sure. I am sure I also read the Pit and the Pendulum, but unfortunately I did not keep a record of the books I have read, because there has been so many. I did like the Raven, it was so sad in an eerie sort of way, and I remembered something, I also read Mask of the Red Death, and I think it was when I first saw the movie starring Vincent Price. I did love the Fall of the House of User the beast. [suspenseful]
I sort of think that Edgar Allen Poe was the Stephen King of his day. [suspenseful]

We had to read a few of his poems and stories in school. I like "The Raven" and "House of Usher, too. [Bd200789]
Yeah he is what got me to liking to read horror and mystery books. [Shaun72]

"It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me." This is a poem I had to memorize and recite in class when I was in high school. I love the rhyme and rhythm. [Jemina]
Ah, Shaunee, Shaunee, you don't know what you're missing. LOL!rasp Do find time to read it when you can. You'll love it. [Jemina]

I like the Cask of Armadillo (I can't remember the actual spelling of the word and its always been an inside joke in my family. Regardless, I bet if you are a fan of Poe you know what I am talking about!) I really liked this story, not only does it have the great twisted, human psychy that Poe wrote so well, it has betrayal, insanity and more importantly killing your friend in a new and interesting way is always popular! I like the Raven too, but EVERYONE that has ever celebrated Holloween knows about the Raven... Its overdone :). [lululastrange]
As the killer in Cask said: In pace requiescat (may he rest in peace). [beautyqueen26]
