I am currently reading a book that I was really getting irritated with and it is supposed to be funny...but I am not finding the real humor. So, after thr first three chapters, I decided I wanted to quit reading the book.
It is about a woman in her thrities and is mouthing off about age angst pregnancy pressure, and dietting battles. But then I read about her complaining about her mom buying her the wrong Prada bag. Now, if you mom is going to buy you a Prada bag just because you want one, pays your rent when your in college because you insist on living on your own, and then marry a doctor...money is never an issue for her! How can someone write a book about struggling when that one has no clue what struggle truly is!!!
I wanted to quit! But after a couple days of the book sitting thre taunting me for quitting...because I have never quit a book. I decided no matter what, I will finish the book so that I can still say that no matter how dry or boring or irritating the book may be, I finished it!
Have you ever wanted to quit reading a book? Did you? Why did you quit or not quit? What was the book and what was it about?Just so that you know what book I am spaking of it is, "Skinny B!tching" by Jenny Lee. Ever read it?

responses and comments:
not exactly dislike, but there are many that i found boring....but i still somehow tried to finish them....like this one Swill Family Robins was sooo boring! :D...bt i still finished it :) [pinktulips]
I hear what you are saying...I especially hate when you get all hyped...and it is a complete dissappointment!! [messagecarol]
before giving my time to book,i have a habit of reading minimum 5 to 6 pages abstractly from abook,it gives me a cirtain idea that wheather i wish to buy it or its worthy of my time or not, this way i never have disapointment from the books i read.. [anirudh1971]
I've started many books that I never finished. If I am not hooked by page 100, I put it down. There are too many books on my "to be read" list to waste too much time with the ones I don't like! I agree about the character in that book though, seems a bit ridiculous to me!!! [BunGirl]
A good friend had 4 books she needed to read for her college courses. She was in a time crunch so I told her I would read one of the books for her and give her my review. This book was so boring I could have cried. I forced myself to read every word. I did finish the book and she questioned me on the content. She did get a good grade. I am always glad to help a friend in need. But, never will I submit to the torture of having to read books that bore you to tears. [ElusiveButterfly]
That was very nice of you to do...I always help my friends out too, but I have decided never to help them read a boring book either, because it is enough that I have to read the ones that my professors assign me also. So, now I am usually stuck editing somewhat boring essays and reviews of books instead. :) [western_valleygirl]
I've never not finished a book. I've read quite a few that I finished and thought, That was terrible! But like you, if I put it down and think I'm not going to read it, it will sit there and taunt me to finish it! I've actually started reading a couple of books that I didn't like, but they have have grown on me... I mostly read fiction, so there have been a few that were just plain bad. I get in a rut with authors and tend to read the same authors a lot, so that I'm sure I'll like their books :) [Bev1986]
Never read that... but I did abandon a few books before because I got on to other books which seemed more interesting. Well, that's the way when it is too boring... you tend to procrastinate or decide to put it off a while but then you have new books to read and suddenly that unfinished book is forgotten... that's what happened in my case... well, maybe the day I have nothing else better to read... i will them up again. [chingyieng]
i haven't read this particular one...but yes there was one that i hated somemuch i just stopped reading it...the author is samuel beckett... [alias_andy]
Yes ..this happenned to me many times.., i buy magazines regularly but never have time to read it completely. Of course this is not the case of disinterest. But sometimes i start reading books but after few pages ,I just forget that...i think that is because of not having interest in it anymore. [reach4sky]
yes ..because after a time was so boring and nothing happened...and was so voluminous i decide dont' read the finish :| [Reviver]
I think you should stick with it -- I was going to quit reading 'Wicked' when I first started it, but I stuck it out, and it really picked up on the 5th chapter -- now it's my favourite book! You never know, you might just find your feet with the book, and it could really pick up! [Lil_miz_ice_x]
Lots of them, it happens all the time, even with writers that I usually like, for example I cannot, just cannot read anything from the Dark Tower series, from Stephen King, and I like many of his others books a lot. [jricbt]
I make myself finish books I start. Sometimes it takes me a long time to finish it, if it really wasn't what I thought it would be when I started. However if it is extremely monotonous or boring, or gory, sometimes I skip over parts mostly so I won't have nightmares about what I just read, lol! But mostly, I do finish books so then I give it a fair evaluation, and know for next time which types of stories or sometimes authors in particular to stay away from! [Liasonfan]
There have only been a couple that I didn't finish. One was religious in nature, and the persons' theology was so far out in "left field" in his beliefs and so different from what I believe the Bible teaches, I threw it away. I didn't want to finish it at all...I thought he was a nut. Another time, it just had too much bad language and violence in it for me...wasn't a bit interested in reading all of that garbage. I'm picky...I want to be entertained, not subjected to that kind of stuff! [estherlou]
i dislike books so much that forget finishing i do not even start them!!! [ashishlijhara]
I was like you long ago...where I never quit reading a book once I had started it. However, that has since then changed. Why? Because there are some books that are just too irritating, pathetic, and not well written to force myself to continue reading. Especially, if it wastes my time, money, and makes me uncomfortable. Why subject yourself to that kind of torture? There are some books that I love to read, and I have reread them sooooo many times. And long ago, I also never used to reread books, but now, it is like going back and visiting old friends when I reread a book that I love. I have never read the book that you are talking about, and it really doesn't sound like it is interesting or my type of book. My experience with rich people is that they see things a lot differently than we do. Furthermore, I believe that if I were you, I would return the book (even though I have books that I have never finished reading and never returned), so that the author doesn't increase her sales for something that is not all it is cracked up to be. [western_valleygirl]
Thank goodness it is a library book. I would have hated to waste money on this book! You give a great way of describing re-reading a book. I, too, have a few favorites and have re-read because I enjoyed them so much. It is like visiting an old friend. :) Thank you for sharing!!! [brokentia]
Yes: Howard's End by E.M. Forster. I was so irritated and disgusted by it that I didn't get past the first chapter. I think what was most disappointing about this book, was that "A Room With A View" was such a clever, witty, intelligent book, which made wonderful points through its characters and style, on the conventions of "Romantic" novels, and the role of women as portrayed in such books, and within coventional society. It was a truly liberating read, for both genders, and I couldn't believe the same author had written such abject crap as "Howard's End"! [angelicEmu]
EM Forester is a bit of a chick-book author, so not one of my faves, but I must agree that 'Howard's End' really sucked. Howard may have ended, but Hell, the book just went on and on. [Adrenochrome]
of course!! most every one does. sometimes, a writer may just be trying to appeal to a different audience. or the writer wants to make you think. i cant remember how many times i have wanted to quit a book. [yayitsamberx0x0]
I have started books that I then found boringor annoying so I didn't finish them. It doesn't bother me, because I have read a lot of books. [cutepenguin]
I read so many books it isn't funny, I have over two book shelves full up of books, I read about 6 at a time, put one down, pick another up. I have just read a book on Ruth Ellis by her sister, the last women to be hanged in the UK, it was really interesting and i like books like that. I also love James Patterson books but there are some that I pick up and put down because they get so mundane and boring, I try to perservere but to no avail. Just give up I would and go on to something that you enjoy reading. [sam09d]
Empire... It's a globalization study book. As I study global justice, and I everyone said this was the best book ever, I was seriously disappointed. [cripfemme]
I have only started reading one book that I just could not finish. I wanted to read it and I tried to read it but it just made no sense to me. Every chapter counterdicted itself. There were many stories going on in every chapter and none of them really ever seemed to be connected to each other. I was lost, confused and frustrated just I put it on the shelf and left it there never to try again. [zukepr]
Yes I have started books that were so boring that I couldn't finish them. I have ran into this once with a movie I thought the movie was so stupid I wouldn't even finish watching it. Yes I gave the movie a chance. I had rented it and even complained when I returned it. I got a credit for the movie. [Starlady0_1]
The secret gardener was the movie I didnt want to finish. [zukepr]
Yes, very rarely do I get to read since I have 3 children, but if a book doesn't capture my attention in the first chapter, or first say 10 minutes, that's it. Her mom buying her the wrong Prada bag would make me want to heave the book out the door, I hate spoiled brats. [elizabeth13]
ha ha Thank you for recognizing that!!! It had me steaming for a while. At this point, I am beginning to think that I should write my own book about age agnst. LOL At least I know about struggle and could probably give a more humorous view! [brokentia]
Once in a great while I will get bored with a book. However, I usually only pick out books that I am reasonably sure I might enjoy. I do try to read about different things and expand my horizons. I find many of the Mainstream books not to my liking. Sometimes, the lesser known books really have great stories. I seldom give up on a book, because many take time to get going. [sigma77]
I'm afraid to admit it but yeah, I have such a book - made even more shameful 'cause it's a well known and beloved (by some, I'm sure) classic. It's Wuthering Heights. I'm 45 years old and I've tried it about 7 times and I can't get ever get Heathcliff off those darn moors! It's horrible! Every time I try, I end up thinking, "I get it, I get it. They're cold and damp and foggy...get ON WITH IT already!" [snivelbec]
ha ha I can't say that I have read that. But I can say I know the feeling with some books also. LOL [brokentia]
almost every book i read in my junior year of HS i couldn't finish, i HAD to read the ciffnotes to get any sort of idea on what the book was about. there was this one book, i can't even remember the name, but it had something to do about an arcitech or something like that, but i got through the first line and couldn't go any further. the damn book was about as thick as my palm and i concluded that if the whole book was as boring as the first page, i couldn't read it. [emarie]
I am sure there is a book I have quit reading, but I really can't pinpoint one. I know there area few books that I didn't like in the first few chapters but kept reading and ended up enjoying a bit. There are several I can think of...like My Name is Zippy that I hated, but read anyway...I kept at it until the end. Even though I still hated the book. [Penguinsangel]
I am huge into reading, and I have a special skill for finding random books that I just LOVE. There has only been one or two books in my past that I can say for sure, I hated and didn't finish. The first one was when I was a senior in High School. For my honors english class we were supposed to read Lord of The Flies.. I refused to finish it after about five chapters. That book is so morbid and awful, I couldn't read it. [chrisie]
I haven't read the book you're talking about, but the last one I can remember casting aside due to bored was the first Wheel of Time book. It was *too* descriptive, not enough was happening, and so I gave up...the fact that it was something like 700 pages long didn't help much either, heh. [Catkin]
I've quit reading some books because I really could not read them some of them we're really borring,others...i could not understand them they gave me some headaches:p.I'm not a person that feels like I have to read a book only beacuse I begun reading it...it must have that ''something''that should make me not to let it out of my hand until I finish it. [mimi_misu01]
I really dont like finshing books that i dont like. When i find a book that i dont like i want to finish but it is very hard I love reading and it gives me pleasure [guitarhero]
I have read a couple of those books and just had to return it...i cant remember the name of those books or the author, but they were pretty boring and usless to me.... [thekiwi]
I'm not much of a reader, so I usually only get 1/2 way through a book then lose interest, and then eventually I'll finish it haha. [Jemmifire]
'Heart of Darkness' by Joseph Conrad! By the tiime I'd get to the fifth page, I couldn't remember what had been on the first. I'm an English teacher, and should try harder, but life's just too short, especially having spent so much of it reading Virginia Woolfs 'Orlando' - okay, the window was green, I get it, move on, I don't need 48 different descriptions of the shade! [Adrenochrome]
I'll see what my local library has in stock, and let you know what I think. Thanks for the recommendations. [Adrenochrome]
I haven't read that book but I have had several over the years that I just couldn't bear to finish, not even by skimming them. Of course right this minute I can't remember the names of any of them (they must have been really bad then!). I hate getting a book that sounds so good, only to discover that it's boring, or not well written. It's a big let down. [embattledsparkle]
I had this similar experience reading the book "Grapes of Wrath". We had to read it in high school, but I didn't pay attention. Then, I tried to read it this past year...I found it so boring. I like to read, and I think reading should be a pleasure, so if I don't like it I stop. There are plenty of books that I would like that I haven't read yet. [prophet1469]
I usually try to finish reading a book. Sometimes i want to stop but as long as i'm not falling asleep then i finish it. Lately i havent been reading as much as i used too. I guess im too busy with my children. Happy Reading!!!! [Smithfamily]
I have actually started quite a few books that I have never finished. If the book doesn't grab my attention in the first couple of chapters, then I just put it aside and try another book. I have gotten most of the way through a couple of books and then lost interest. I probably won't ever go back and try to finish them either. I've never read the book you're talking about. I probably never would either. It doesn't sound like my kind of book. I'm into horror. I tried to read The Tommyknockers by Stephen King, but I couldn't get through it. I was really disappointed too because Stephen King is my favorite author. That's the one that really sticks out in my mind. I also tried to read The Di Vinci Code, but I couldn't get into that one either. I enjoyed the movie and since seeing it, I may give the book another try. Maybe. [wellamoose]
i dont like to read........ [musha_ali]
yup.. I have faced this problem several times..I don't like boring books [chits_12345]
the novel i hated most is wuthering heights by emily bronte.dont ever read this freadfull novel [vishnunarayanan]
That does sound boring. I do the same thing if I start reading a book and it isn't that interesting I stop reading it. [Shaun72]
Never seen that book before but it does sound boring. There are so many books out there, surely there will be some that you dislike. Well, you just have to read the intro carefully before you decide to read on. I have several books on my hand that I'm unable to finish because I just feel too heavy to open it up again. [automobile]
When I was young I tried reading, "The Hobbit". Couldn't get through the first chapter. Just not for me. [perrytx]
I start reading a book that isn't very interesting and think well the back cover says...blah blah blah. So I think with every page the story will start to get interesting and next thing I know the book is done and nothing exciting happened. I hate when that happens [lilbitgreen]
no its not that i have simply hated a book but yes there are some books which were so predictable and boring that i could not finish . bourne ultimatum of the bourne series was one of them . i personally hate the confidence lifting or moral boaster books . [jacobdsouza]
ya one book ........i hate is so much that i forgot the book name also. [vssam123]
I don't really like to read all that much so that happens sll the time. Now that there are things like sparknotes it's even easier to get bored with it. I quit reading For Whom the Bell Tolls after like 5 pages. It's kind of sad that the world has gotten to the point where you give up with a book after 5 pages. [catbox0]
YEAH I HAVE CAME ACROSS 1 BOOK RECENTLY, IT SEEMS QUITE BORING & LATHARGIC AFTER THAT. [someshrathi11]
Yeah it was Burial at the Sea that I couldn't really finish. It was too fictitious at the pretext of talking about the lives of Indian leaders Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. [Shilpi0202]
Haven't read that one and I dont think Im going to...not the sort of book I like. I can read anything from one to ten books a week (Im a bit of a book freak). What I do to decide whether a book is worthy of my time is...read the first four pages and one in the middle...if it has grabbed my attention and kept it with that one page in the middle, I read it! [durzor]
I like reading but i don't like to finsh a book without reading it to the end.... When i got a book in my hand then my first priority is to finish this book. No metter how much page have a book.... depend on story, and way of writing,..... and the perpous of writing that why a book wrote by a writer. [aas043]
well this book called chronicles of narnia was boring for me.i read a lil bit n i stopeed as i cudn't read further.i saw the movie and it was very good. [prashanth_vv]
Hello there:-) I quit reading quite a few books already. The thing is that I love reading, I read at least a few books every week, but I could never spend time reading something that I don't enjoy. A few times, I come back to the book I didn't enjoy at a later stage (mostly because I have run out of something to read) I haven't read "Skinny Bitching", but I have read simular book. Some are actually really funny, and others are trying to hard without actually being funny at all. [feliciamimmi22]
i dont have the completing a book...till now i have never completed...even school and college books also... [riffindus]
[rakeshiitr]
This is my friend's comment on the first page...minus her ast sentence. Really dude or dudette, that is not cool to copy and paste! [brokentia]
i have before..i forget the title of the books d..but its regarding love stories. its kinda boring..waste my money to buy that book.. and now worst still - i duno where i put it.. [amanda84]
I first ask my friends and then choose a book to read from the library so no dought of disliking it.. [adnanmd2]
I've quit reading quite a few over the last year or two, whether it was something I purchased, thinking it might be good, or that someone handed to me or recommended. I think with Chick Lit. you can expect most of the stories to be like that, though--not to say all Chick Lit. is bad, it just feels like many of them fall into the cliche of "struggling" over the same issues. In fact, I think the last book I donated without finishing was a chick lit. novel lol. I try and read reviews before I buy any book these days, just to get a more general opinion before I buy since you can't always tell by reading the short blurb on the back. And thanks for the headsup on that book, glad to say I haven't read it yet. [nuttmeg]
nope, everytime i pick a book, i make it a habit to read the synopsis. that way i'll know the plot of the story and whether the same interests me. im a book lover and so far, has enjoyed and finished all the books ive read. [sicnarf]
only on a magazine, i got half way through it then realised there still wasnt any pics of half naked women!! so i just chucked it in the bin :) [Matt_e11]
i understand how u feel. though i've never read the book u mentioned, i know the feelings. i sometimes read some short stories on some mags and thought how stupid the author was for not even knowing what they're really writing about. i cant believe authors like that can even publish a book. for me, many times i given up on a book, but mostly not because i dislike them, but because i was too lazy to continue and the plot in the book aint getting better or was too slow. this happened with me with some stephen king's books. he's a great writer, but for u to get to the interesting part of the book, u have to read through all the boring parts first. i almost gave up on "tommyknockers", but after about A YEAR AND A HALF, i finally managed to finish it :P. [nufoundglory]
oh, lot many books. horrible thrillers, hopeless romantics. cudnt finish 70 percent of the books ive started. [AishwaryaJndhl]
i start reading a book that i like. there is no pint in starting and leve it reading in the middle [ssatuluri]
HI m rohit...but i don' think books r that bad..yeah somtimes they sucks..but still there r some which really stay with u when u r alone like a marine eng..n for me my best time pass is books.. [mishrarohit]
yes there have been many books that just bore me to the point i cant stay awake to finish them but all in all i try my hardest to finish what i start reading. thanks for the warning on that book ill make sure not to read it .. thanks [glasser3]
Of course i do. I think most of us have the same experience, even not once. I encounter this situation for many many times, every time i finished reading halfway. Thats all. [kotad6]
i think people have different perceptions about different things ...and the book u dont like might be interesting to others ...i havent read that book ...anyway .... :)...but yeah lot of books are veryboring [varunharry]
ya ya! Whenever I start reading my own autobiography, I dislike it very much. All pages are torned, dusty, smell ugly. We call autobiography is written by ourselves but it's wrong. I don't know who wrote it but certainly nobody will like to read it. If you are intrested in getting bored I shall send a ebook version free of cost to you as well as for all mylot people. Total pages are 25 x 365 x 24 x 60 x60. That is 788,400,000 pages in 25 volumes. [sajodude]
I have been known for owning so many books, though I tried reading one book, The Real Rules, which based on the blurbs in the book cover, are practical rules in having a relationship with men. At first, I was intrigued about the book because it publicized that the ways and means to hook a man are forthcoming rather than the means defined in another book, The Rules, which was quite popular during my college days. After reading two chapters of the Real Rules, I decided it is a total waste of time and I can relate to what the author was saying. Anyway, I believe I lent it to one of my friends and up to now, I still do not know who among my friends borrowed it and if it was returned, I still do not know where it is stored. [atvsamala]
funny you brought this up. i love reading, but books being too costly, i usually scout around in book sales. there's one that caught my attention. besides it being very, very cheap, it had quite an interesting title, so i didn't bother to read the synopsis. i had gone through just the first page when i practically had to throw it away. the language was horrible, to begin with. i never read it through. although, like you, i had to think twice because i've never really quit reading a book before, but the writing was just in bad taste, it left me no other choice. [toonatoons]
yes ofcourse.......... because i feel very sad when i am unable to finish to read that book [extremedeepu]
ok now i remember the one book i have abandoned after a few chapters reading it (i dont even think it got to "a few chapters", maybe one chapter and a half). it was when i was still in high school, it was the book by christopher pike titled "witch". it was so stupid how the writer sort of "worshipped" the main character and as if he was trying hard to make every reader likes the character. the main character was portrayed as very naive but she got every boyfriend of her own bestfriend fallen for her. how stupid was that?! *roll*. [nufoundglory]
nopes, not much into reading books, most of the time i read Comic Books or magazines, i got bored when i start to read books. [blueman]
I have never read this book but I have given up on the Bible several times (I don't like a lot of fiction). Eventhough I have given up on the Bible I have finished it because I wanted to know what all of the hype was about. after about my third time through (I was still just trying to understand what the f***? Why so many wars, animosity, hatred, etc.. over this book) then I realized that I actually had to study it and tear it apart since intepretation is key to the whole thing. Oh hell I will not get into this, but maybe this book of your's will probabally get into struggleing later on, maybe the gravy train dries up and after having everything handed to her she has to depend on herself for the first time ever in her life, thus the story of struggle?!? I don't know really just wanted to say "Hi Tia!" :-) Have a great day!! [meeandnotyou]
Oh god I got it..... I know what the struggling is....... YOU TRYING TO READ THIS BOOK!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!! [meeandnotyou]
well i've never tried to read that particular book but there was a book called "brothers and keepers" by John Wideman that I was supposed to read for an college english class. I disliked the book 100 pages short. Reading is supposed to be enjoyable, most people just read for leziure, so if you are not enjoying the book what is the point in forcing yourself through it especially if you are not doing it for school or anything. [killj0y]
All my class books in school are soo boring.. :D, but i have to finish them and should know the content well because there's a test in the final. LOL. [JeffreyHuang]
Yes I have. I cant remember the title but I plough through a few chapters and then just put it aside. Later when I was out of reading material (almost as bad as losing Internet connection) I started reading it again, much to my amazement I couldn't put it down and enjoyed it to the end. I saw an interview once where a popular author said if you can't hook the reader in the first paragraph you'll lose them. [whiteheather39]
I am usually don't fond of reading books or novels..I really feel them borring and irritating.. But I have many reference books of my subject of engineering that I feel so boring that I had kept them away from my eyes..Whenever I see that book my interest in reading goes to somewhere for roaming..There are many books which are interesting but if more time is spend on them then they become a real cause for headche and spoil the rest of the hour os studying..So I read them al the last minute of the reading section and I usually spend around half an hour everyday on them. I feel the book which irritates you ..is not meant for your standard or even if you want to read it them never read them continuosly ..you can read them in intervals..so that your mind get freshen by that time.. [shyam4uall]
Nope, I dont like reading a book, I just liked see cover of books :D [agusfebi]
i don't read books only...i hate them...so no point of finishing a book [ahsan15]
Offlate I have started to finish the books. During my studies I never finished my study books. Its during examination times I used to be selective and score marks. Now offcourse I finish books. So which is a real nice feeling. But yes you have a book if you do not like then no wonder you can not finish it. [nayand]
sorry dear, i never read this kind of books, well i will search this types of books to my town, if i got i will surely try to know why u dont get the humour of tht book. [bhs1980]
i m not interested in books sorry [atul_barapatre]
I can't say I have read the book that you are talking about, but I know what you mean! A while ago I read "The English Harem" by Anthony McCarten. It is about a young English girl who lives in a high rise on a council estate in London with her parents. She is a bit of a tearaway etc. She gets a job as a waitress in an Indian restaurant and ends up marrying the owner, who already has 2 wives. The book was ok. Until I got to the last page. After a succession of events, apparently the author got bored. Instead of carrying on and giving the book a proper ending- the main character (the young girl) "awoke from an elaborate daydream". How utterly disappointing!! [donnadean1980]
Well.. I've usually read books only if i need them in school and usually I've compleated most of them. But cause lack of time I've not finished all of them. I use summary's or just asking from others. Usually is like that.. when i starting to reading then i cant stop until book is finished because it's so interesting :D but I've readed also 1 book that i didn't liked at all. Goethe "Faust" or something like that. It's a really booring and hard book for me. The book was written like a poem and i dislike read poems coz i usually don't get a point :D. And I've readed this book like a 10min and then i felt sleep :P [Mafia101]
I read most of novels, but only Kannada. The book i disliked so much, i could not finish is Shwetha Chathure. This is Really worst book i have ever read. Believe me when i took that book, i was so happy. I read 3 pages, i came to know, this is not good. So i just read 50 pages. Then after 60 pages i read, i threw the book somewhere.I could not read. [anjuscor]
yes there are quite a few book which i dnt like so i never read them althoug i boughtr them . ifell the book should have the quiality to attract the reader and then only can we progress in the book . [amitavroy]
There are only a few books which I have abandoned usually because of language, I object very strongly to reading books where the words predominately start with 'F' and have only four letters. The same goes for films as well, One which got rave reviews and oscar nominations I walked out half way through because of the language. [Eskimo]
Reading a book about DIY manual.... Doing manual things is not my favourite hobby. [ronaldinu]
Had to read Lord of the Flies in high school. Yeah, I know , it's supposed to be a classic, but I just hated it. I would have NOT finished it, but since it was required for a test I had to force myself to get through to the end so I'd know what the conclusion. [Idlewild]
It took me 20 years to read the full Lord of the Rings trilogy! I kept starting them and giving up after about 50 pages. But after the films came out, I grabbed the trilogy and read them in about a week! It's very rare that I'll read a book just because I've seen the film, but this was the exception, and very much worth it. At the moment, I've been trying to read a very weird book called House of Leaves. A friend lent it to me about 18 months ago, and occasionally I'll read another 5 pages or so. It is very hard going, but fascinating so I think I'll finish it one day! [emsr2d2]
wow, you got a lot of patience brokentia... or maybe looking at a book as a challenge, lol! i got books i didn't finish. if at the third chapter it is still not making any sense, i just stop and get rid of it. there's always a better book ready for me to grab that's why i don't waste time if the book is really a struggle to read. yes, i'm a quitter, lol! [kokopelli]
Nope, I've never read it before. I tried to read Dune books once because I thought the movie was good. The first page alone told me how boring it was and I decided not go any further. [Lydia1901]
If a book doesn't catch me when i am 1/4 way in, I drop it. I have come back later and finished or not. The book Dune was suggested to me but I just didn't get it. I don't waste my valuable time with something that is not engaging. [pollyandry]
Too many to recall, but 'The Lovely Bones' comes to mind as the most recent, I was recommended it but it was so awful that I couldn't read more than the first two chapters. The writing was just so infantile Agggghhhh! [Bartolin1980]
I can't answer that directly because as long as I remember (and not counting school related books) I think I never finished reading any book I ever started, I find reading books a lot boring so I can't directly answer your question but I think you'll get the response by this. I like reading but pc magazines, newspapers (although I don't read it many times) but I don't have patient to read books. [ownado]
There have been a few times where I've wanted to just slam the book down and burn it, but I always end up reading the whole thing. I think it's because I have hopes that it might get better, so I keep reading until the end. Sometimes it gets better, sometimes it doesn't. I just can't bring myself to *not* finish a book once I've started one! [jojopuff]
A lot of books lack true substance, and books that have no plot, or no real message just do not appeal to me. If I feel a book is going nowhere, I will not finish it. I plain out refuse to do so because I find it rather pointless. [highflyingxangel]
i hate all the so called chick lit books. they are nothing but a way to show that women are stupid. i hate those writer and publishers who are such fools. [mikaghi]
I think there are a few books or stories I've started and couldn't finish, but there have only been a few. Like you, I really prided myself on finishing every book I started. The one that comes to mind now is the novella "Roadwork" by Stephen King writing under the pen name Richard Bachman. Actually, among all the friends and aquaintances I have who have read Stephen King, none of them have ever finished "Roadwork." It was just too boring to continue. And thanks for letting me know of another book to stear clear of. :) ~Wyrdsister [wyrdsister]
Well, i have quitted on a few books due to the topics being boring, no substance and did not live up to its billing. If the first three chapters do not get me going, that is it. On the other hand, if it does, i have a habit of reading the entire book in one sitting, even through the night. [kabuki]
I've given up on quite a few books over the years but not before giving them a good chance to get better. I really hate to start a book and not finish it but sometimes your sanity has to come first! ;) [seewhy]
yes I disliked some books but I couldn't finish. I'm curious and want know the end always. The reasons for dislike were some characters or their behaviour, I didn't understand them or had other point of view. I didn't read "Skinny Bitching', I didn't like 'interview with vampire' because I didn't like main character , don't remember his name. He could be other, I don't like him [oneelf]
not exactly dislike, but i had this book intitled the known world, i really had a hard time finishing it, until now im not yet done. [bev_arch_20]
yes,,i disliked all my study books...others i never tried.. [sehgal_kapil]
Why not stop reading it? I have read books that was not to my taste, and which I thought was stupid etc. I had to, due to my job, continue reading them. If it is crap than don't finish it. I read "The Picture of Dorian Gray" in one whole day because I thought it is a classic, I must read this. But I hated it. It drove me crazy. When I was in school, I had to read "The Waves?" or whatever by Katherine Mansfield at least four times, and every time I so dislike it so much. Sometimes a book bothers you because it hits on some of your own issues and sometimes it is just bad. Your book just sounds bad. [Corrine11]
Nope I didn't read the book, but I would recommend you to read something from Sophie Kinsella. If one of these titles like Shopaholic, Shopaholic Ties the Knot or Shopping in New York arises your interest then you should read. It's a series of 4 books about spending, shopping, lying and also being afraid of what will happen next :) It's so funny really. You should try reading at least one of them. U should start with the first one, they are kinda related :) Kiss [QueenBee89]
I was like that with The Holy Grail: Imagination and Belief by Richard Barber. At first I thought it was really insteresting but then after the author stopped telling the stories of the Grail it started to suck. I just didn't like where he went with it and his views on the subject matter. It's been a couple of months now so I can't really remember specifics that I didn't like. I ended up skipping things from the book to finish. I hate skipping because I'm afraid I'll miss out on something interesting that I didn't know but it was just awful. I hate not finishing a book to. It sucks. I've never heard of that book before and I'll make sure I'll stay clear of it. Thanks for the tip! [GnosticGoddess]
After I start reading a book I can't do that. No matter how boring it is, I have to read it to the end. If not it will drive me crazy wondering how it ended or if it got any better. [caper111]
There have books I have given up on but I don't know if there was a book that was 'so bad' that I stopped reading it. If you are talking about a book leaving my attention or just not being interesting, then yes, there have been plenty. [zeloguy]
Yes, a few times. When I would try a new author. But I mainly stick to whome I like now, so I don't run into that problem. I never read skinny b. by Jenny Lee. I will not finish the book, but skim though it and read the last page. Blessings, M&M [margieanneart]
I couldn't get past 2 chapters of Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons". I just wansn't into his writing style. Needless to say I have never read the "DiVinci Code". [twilight021]
I guess I've had fair warning not to try to read "Skinny Bitching"! I'm like you, I don't think that I have ever not finished a book that I started, no matter how boring it was. The last book that I had to really, really fight to finish was "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey. If you remember, his book was featured on Oprah and he was a guest on her show. He was supposedly a drug addict who had overcome his addiction through rehab. and this was supposed to be an autobiographical story of his struggles while using drugs and during his recovery. It later came out that he was full of sh#t and that he embellished the whole story to make it more sensational. After hearing about it on Oprah, I bought the book. I have an interest in substance abuse treatment and addictions because of my book, and it sounded interesting. Reading this book was the most painful experience of my life! It was boring, the grammar was horrible, and he couldn't write a complete sentence that made sense. It read like a 4th grader had written it. I fought my way through it just because that's the way I am, but I was very happy to finish it and give it away. At the time I read it and hated it so much, the controversy had not even begun about the author. I was even more annoyed when I heard that most of it was made up and not even his own true experience.
