Have You Ever Read A Book That Made You Cry

Oh my goodness me, I did tonight. I read my daughter a story every night when she is in bed and I had bought her a new book, and so I decided to read it to her. It is called "The Velveteen Rabbit" and at first it was ok, it had lots of lovely pictures in it and I was enjoying it, and then it turned really sad and I got the biggest lump in my throat ever, now it takes a lot in life to make me cry, but I sat there fighting this lump in my throat and trying to carry on reading this story and I could feel the tears welling in my eyes!!! Now luckily the story does have a happy ending but boy was it sad!! I managed to find the story on the internet so you can take a look at it if you want,if you have not already read it before that is, hopefully the link will work and see what you think. Let me know what you think!! http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/williams/rabbit/rabbit.html But have you ever read any book that made you cry? If so which book and why did it make you cry?

responses and comments:

I've read that book. It is kind of sad, but books can't evoke enough emotion out of me to make me cry. [indycolts1]

I think I cried in book 4 of harry potter. I cried while reading "Shadow of the Wind" -> such a nice book. I cried countless of times. This goes to show how powerful stories are... I will try to read what you suggested. Thanks! [augustine87]
Yes stories can be powerful, I know my daughter did not understand what I was reading to her, but I think she wondered why I was crying! [gemini_rose]

Yes, This happens alot. No matter what book it is - if it is sad I cry. But I cry over commercials too. Did you ever see that commercial for the animals that has that Sarah girl in it. Oh my, I cannot even watch it the animals make me cry. [badkat83]

I'm a big softy so when I get into a book I make connections to the characters. And I often have strong emotions to the things they do in the book or what happens to them. For instance, while I was reading Mario Puzo's "The Sicilain" I became so frustrated with one of the main characters that when I returned to school the next day I was still in a bit of a grouchy mood. When a friend asked me what was wrong I responded with something along the lines of, "Aspanu is getting to be too self-concerned... He's pissing me off!" It took me a few minutes to realize she had no idea what I was talking about. A day or two later I was finishing the book and was struck by a few parts of the book... I can honestly say I had to put the book down a couple times just to clear the tears away. The way Mario Puzo created the characters was so strong. I couldn't help learning to hate some and love others. And there were some really unsuspected turns in the book. It was great, I loved it! I've actually read it a few times. [I cry every time, even though I know what's coming.] For someone who enjoys fiction books, and loves the Italian Mafia, I strongly suggest Mario Puzo's The Sicilian. [Live4MyTomorrow]

The last book that I finished, I cried. Jodi Picoult. She is one of my most favorite authors and I am reading through all of her books right now. I have a few to finish-- I cannot wait to read the other ones yet I'm sad to have to wait for her next book to come out!! [enchantedleppard]

I read a lot of romance novels & I find a lot of those at some point's, have me bawling. Then I have to stop, wipe my eyes, blow my nose, then continue. I hate it, but I love the books! [Sharky085]

Yes, I've read some books that actually made me cry. The only books I can remember though are Tuesdays with Morrie and A Walk to Remember. These books are so moving, well the story is. And I kind of like imagine the whole scene while reading so I guess that contributed to my emotions. Haha! [marababe]

I loved the velveteen rabbit and had heard it read to the childrensgroups at our local library. I worked in the children's part of the library. I cried when I read Anne Franks book as it was so touching. the gutiness of that child was just unbelievable and the courage in one so young. I also wept at The Forgotten child a biografhy of a mistreated boy who was always called it.. A really wrenching story of a true life written by the adult he turned out to be. wait I think I have the wrong title It was called A boy Named It. do not remember the name of the author. [Hatley]

I have never read one that made me cry, but I have gotten deeply saddened by a novel... [zenmachado]

That book is a classic. I read the book for myself about 2 months ago. Yes, it made me cry also. I found out that there is a book called, "The Velveteen Principle". It explains how the basic precept of the book is applied to everyday life. I can't remember who it is buy right now, but I am trying to find a copy. The Velveteen Rabbit is definitely a book that I will want to read to my grandchildren. DCMerkle [DCMerkle]

ah! nope! im particularly good at evading that type of novels. lol! i dont want to read a very lonely or very sad story, i just dont want something like that. its bothering me and cracking me up!!! hehehe...im not very good on that department so no sad stories for me lol [puccaLOVESgaru]
I normally avoid anything that I think is sad book wise!! But this book was one that I had picked up for my daughter so I did not know!! [gemini_rose]

Yeah. Mitch Albom's "Tuesdays with Morrie" made me cry. It was a life-changing book for me. I gues it made me cry because I was able to realize all the mistakes that I've done in my life. The book taught me how to value and appreciate more the things that I have especially my family. [mysticalprincess]
I have never read that one, but it sounds quite interesting. [gemini_rose]

hi gemini_rose i don't read books much.. i only read several books, and mostly i read its review on the back first i prefer comics actually.. hahaa but i read 'a son called it' and i like it very much i read all of the three books, and i think i got a bling2 eyes.. hahaaa i don't think i made myself cry that time but the story really touch me.. i also read 'the five people you meet in heaven'.. it's a good book too, and once again i failed to cry and stopped at a bling2 eyes.. hahaaa do you understand what i mean with a bling2 eyes ?? LoL the book teach you to be something.. [unuzzz]
No do not understand what you mean by bling2 eyes!!! [gemini_rose]

hehehehe this might sound a little silly but the book thats made me cry was the last harry potter i wont say why i cried because dont want to spoil the ending but its when a certain character gets stabbed and harry holds a funeral for then i cried loads at it lol. [xlinzixx]
It is not silly at all, a lot of people got upset with that book, I cried over a stuffed bunny story! [gemini_rose]

Yeah i had read that book which is full of drama and emotions. The six stories in that book had made me cry. That stories are full of emotions and everyone of us will cry after reading that.I love that book because that book touched out my feelings and that really tells about your relationships with your family and friends.Whenever i read that book i really gets upset. One story i liked the most in which 16 years old boy slaps his mother because of the money...thus i say that money is the root of evil. [abhishekamb2000]
A book that is well written should be able to inspire emotion in a person that is when you know it is is a good book. [gemini_rose]

the velveteen rabit was a great book it was one I read when I was younger an had to add to my girls colllection the one that me cry was harry potter 5 when harry's godfather got killed an the american girl serries addy it was ok till you start finding out what happen to most of the chartcters in the book an you find out some died on thir way to freedom [enola1692]
I have not read the Harry Potter books yet!! I have read a bit of the first one and then my mum borrowed it off me. I will get around to reading them one day I guess. [gemini_rose]

Hi Rose...well what a sad thing!!!...and did it make your daughter cry too???? Im not that sure im into sad books!!!...im more into sometihng lighthearted...I like a bit of romance...not Mills and Boon though..just maybe a pleasant love sory... I love autobiographies.... But i will tell you what did make me cry Rose...on saturday night...Britains got talent...that little lad singing..Oh he was wonderful....we both were in tears!!. then family phoned and said...Oh are you watching the tv !!!!...they were tearful too!!!! im kind of tempted to go and look up this velveteen rabbit....but i will go and get a tissue first.... [ruby222]
I do not usually read sad books, I did not know this one was going to be sad until I read it!! My daughter did not cry, she did not really know what it was about! I saw that little boy, he was good! I loved that dancing dog too, very clever. Yes read the story and see if you think it is a bit sad. [gemini_rose]

I still haven't read that, but the first that made me cry was this old sweet dreams book "PS I Love You." [janujennifer]
That title sounds familiar, but I cannot quite recall if I might have read it or not. [gemini_rose]

I just got done with a book last night that made me cry. It is by Nicholas Sparks called The Rescue. It was so touching and I guess I can relate because my hubby used to be a volenteer firefighter. It tells about a guy that blamed himself because of his father's death and then toward the end, his best friend. It tells how he has his own demons to overcome before finding what he needs in life for himself. [kaysue4]

"sybil". that book was supposed to be a true story-it was absolutely horrific.i couldn't even finish it,it was so upsetting. [scarlet_woman]

I have read a lot of books that made me cry and laugh. The fisrst novel was " David Copperfield" by Chales Dickens [xenna1986]

Well yes, I read novels mostly. I read one of Jeffrey Archer's work, titled Kane and Abel. I thought it was just one of those typical stories, but then again I was wrong. It's a great story, of how two different souls keep ending up with each other (without both of them knowing who's who). William Kane and Abel Rosnovski, two different characters who came from different worlds.. I believe it was also made into a television mini-series during the mid-80's, though I never saw it. But then reading the novel, is already enough for me to visual how horrid and compelling the story was.. [raijin]

Yeah, I ever read some books which made me cry or happy, not only books, sometimes the TV show, program and songs will make me cry, too. [Dorislee]

I love that book. I dont remember if it made me cry. The book i remember most distinctly as having made me cry was a book i read when i was about 11 or 12 (my mom said i was being silly to cry over a book like i was.) It was a book called a Dog Called Kitty, and well the puppy died in the end. And i cried like crazy because it was the same kind of dog that we had. [saundyl]

I read the book The Outsiders in junior high and it made me cry. It was very close to my own situation at the time, and I kept reading it over and over for about two or three years. I cried every time! Now I still keep a copy just in case I want to reread it again, but it doesn't have the same effect on me. I think books sometimes effect us differently than at other times, depending on what's going on in our own life. [Wyndsong738]
Yes I think that books do affect us differently if we keep reading them, I sometimes find that the first time that I read a book I do not take it in properly, but then the second time I read it properly and it affects me a lot more. [gemini_rose]

CHARLOTTE'S WEB always makes me cry. I cried the first time I read it when I was about ten years old and I've cried every single time I've re-read it. I re-read it by reading it to children and sometimes just for myself every couple of years. I've probably read it more times than any other single book. It was my childhood favorite but it is very, very sad. [irisheyes]
Another book that I have not read, I do not know why I have never read that one I seem to be missing out on a lot of books! [gemini_rose]

Oh, so many books actually normally novels. lol I used to read Judith McNaught novels and it's something to have in your shelves, her novels has nice stories. I used to read spy novels too and they're very good when paired with dramatic scenes. I usually get carried away when it comes to spy novels with drama story on the other side. [MGjhaud]
I will have a look out for her novels, I do not think I have ever read any of her books. [gemini_rose]

awww. thats sweet of you. . . my boys have that book , they like it alot. i do cry when i read books athat are sad [dragonflyfli]
I like it, I just do not think I can read it again for a while!! [gemini_rose]

"The Velveteen Rabbit" happens to be one of my favorite childhood stories. I searched to find a copy of it for my niece when she was little. Yes I cried with it but it is such a wonderful story. I think the last book I cried with was Harry Potter 7. For those who haven't read I won't say why or in what areas but it was more then once that tears came to my eyes. It's one of those books that has you laughing, crying and then laughing again. You experience the gamut of emotions with it. [emeraldisle]
I was going to add they do have an animated version of "The Velveteen Rabbit", not sure if it's available to buy or not but it might be something for you to check. [emeraldisle]

Oh, I loved the Velveteen Rabbit - and it was one of the very first books that made me cry! And the number of books that have made me cry? Too numerous to count. I am a complete bookworm, and many of the books that I have read have affected me emotionally. [DJules]
Do you not think it was really sad! I felt so sorry for that poor rabbit, especially when he got threw out in the rubbish!! [gemini_rose]

I've never read a book that would make me cry.....but i would love to read such a book..... [joeprakash2410]

I would have to say the book that made me cry is a toss up between Night by Eli Weisel and Alicia: My Story. Both are about two survivors of the Holocaust. [soulist]
I have not read any of those books, but they sound like the types of book that I would be interested in reading. [gemini_rose]

i have read many books that have made me cry. i am very sentimental especially when it comes to my son. we have the velveteen rabbit and i have not read it to him yet but i know the story and it is a bit sentimental now that i think of it. he is a softy like me so i am sure he will think it sad too in spots. the older i get the more i dislike anything sad. [mikeysmom]
I am a softy, to soft sometimes I think, I cry at silly things too!! [gemini_rose]

I seem to have a very active imagination and really get into the books I'm reading. If they are well written, they make me laugh and cry as I'm reading. Since I read a lot, there have been many that have made me cry, at least a little. [shizuoka]
I too get into the books that I am reading, when I read I see the people in the story, imagine the scenery, when a book allows you to do that it is a sign of a good writer. [gemini_rose]

I have yet to read that book gemini_rose, and will check out the link. The book that brought tears to my eyes was one of Jodi Piccoult books called My Sisters Keeper - boy, that story hurt. [maddysmommy]
Please do, it is not a really big thing to read online, it is only a short story. I have read that book too, so I know what you mean. [gemini_rose]

I've got read this book "The Velveteen Rabbit". I remember it was a favorite of Joey's girlfriend on the sitcom "Friends" and Chandler hunted a copy for her. I have heard it mentioned off and on throught years by various people. I have been an avid reader since the age of three and I don't how I missed and continued to miss this book. I love to read or watch stories that make me cry. I feel with need that outlet caused by someone's else creativity. Well anyway the first book that made me cry to the point that I have to keep putting it down, was "Flowers in the Attic" by V.C. Andrews. The parts that got to me where the growing were growing up and beginning to lose faith of ever getting out, being forced by nature into and unwanted incestous relationship, and the young twin getting sick and dying still believing in the mother. Thank for the link so I can finally check out this so well thought of story. [ReoTwo]
Flowers in the attic is a brilliant book, I have read it many many times. [gemini_rose]

Mists of Avalon, when Vivian dies :( [lisaradgirl]

I've read many books that made me cry. The Velveteen Rabbit is a wonderful book, and it's only sad for a while before it's happy again:) As far as children's books go, The Little Prince is another favorite which made me cry. [rhettaa]

Yes, I've read books that have made me cry before. The book that made me cry the most was The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks. I had seen the movie, which made me cry as well, but the book was far more emotional than the movie. I am glad that I decided to read it, because it was a wonderful book. I've since also read another book by Nicholas Sparks, which was Message in a Bottle, and that one also made me cry. That book was also made into a movie as well, but I have never seen it. He also wrote the book A Walk to Remember, which was also turned into a movie. He's a great author, and I've bought just about every one of his books. I haven't read any others besides those two though, because I've been more in a paranormal romance mood for the past couple of months. I just can't get enough of vampires, werewolves, and other paranormal creatures of the night. [jenni7202]
I love paranormal books, they are among my favourites to read!! [gemini_rose]

oh yes I love books I have had two published myself. I read several books that made me cry. I can't really think of the names of any right now though. Check out my books you may like them. [winterose]
the first is about my life story, the second is a novel about a young woman who lives the country for the big city and it is about all the things that happen to her in that big city, it is a book about family, love, hardship, etc, [winterose]

absolutely!I have read many books that make me cry! The deeds of the main character always affect me! [moonastrid]

I could not list just one book tht hs touched me or made me cry.I am a very emotional person and feel every book, person, ect with my full heart and soul.I get so caught up in the story I am reading and tend to get emotional. So yes I cry often with my books.... [Breath]
Thats a good thing...:) [Breath]

I also read some that made me cry. A walk to remember and Tuesday with morrie are one of the books that I remember that I cried every time I read it. There are also some romance novels that made me cry, I don't remember the titles though. [kylie_quistis]

I'm not much of a reader at all so I have never read a book that made me cry. I have watched movies that have also been made into a book though, and the movie did make me cry so I know the book would also. [stephcjh]

Yes I have Sweetie but not a Childrens Book I have read a couple of Adults Bok that have had me crying But that is a few Years ago now and I really can not remember the Titles but they where by Catherine Cookson Hugs [gabs8513]

I read that book years ago to my girls I love that one an yes a lump grew in my throat last book to make my cry was the last harry Potter Book deathly hollows when they killed Dobby the house elf off [enola1692]
