There was a power cut today, and I grabbed this opportunity to have a look at my home library. We had plenty of books ones, but we gave away those we had lost interest in. Still, I feel there are around five hundred books. I can't tell you the exact number because I haven't counted. I was actually looking for a book on the "Dead Sea Scrolls," my current hot interest being Christianity.
I have heaps of exciting titles such as "Beloved" by Toni Morrison, "Gone with the Wind," and so on in my library.
So, have you arranged the books in your library recently? How many books do you have?
Cheers and happy mylotting

I had a beautiful library in my house. I had an old fashion brick Victorian hose with a wrap around porch and a balcony on top and a wonderful library with book shelves from ceiling to floor. My ex got all the books in the divorce. I miss them even after all these years. I spent hours in there reading the greats! [honeydew82174]
Your ex got all the books? :( Wow, that must have been a devastating experience. If such a thing happened to me, I would have cried buckets. I love books! cheers and thanks for the response! [positiveminded1977]
I can't tell you an exact number, either, as it's quite a few. And, I've had to give or sell a ton of them off because I just don't use them. It seems like once I buy a book, I don't read them because I feel like I can read them anytime I want as there's no due date or anything. So, I never read them. I now buy mostly reference Books and Cookbooks because I actually use those. I rarely buy fiction because they sit on the shelf forever. If I want to read fiction, I get a book out of the library because I know I will either read them or take them back by the due date. [desertdarlene]
I get a lot of gift cards to bookstores, which is kinda funny because I work in a library and I don't buy CDs. But, not all of them are cookbooks, some of them are bible things, health books, and books with Hiking and biking trails. [desertdarlene]
I have my own library at home. I think I have around 100 books. Some of them,I have been reading. But some of them are new. I really love to read.I have heard, that a really good book, can be a better friend than a human being [Swede_59]
oh.... PG woodehouse. yes, that is what I am going to read now. would suit my mood perfectly! and my library... which one? at my parents home there were about 800 books. now I moved out and live on my own. my own library is about 150 books I think. never counted them, it might be 200 actually. [Elkeliini]
Just a month ago, I put so many books in the boxes and in our stockroom! I rearranged my small library as my daughter's drafting room/study room. She is graduating in interior design and she needs space to do her thesis. I was able to fill 20 big boxes full of books! I am a voracious reader and I love books. I'd rather buy books than makeup or bags! Maybe, after she graduates, I can rearrnge again our small library complete with my rocking chair! [everlasting]
Mmm... you will find it very difficult to find a book if it is well packed in a box. I love books too, and like you, I would rather purchase a good book than makeup or bags. :) Cheers and thanks for the response. [positiveminded1977]
We have well into the thousands. We recently built in bookshelves that cover 3/4 of the wallspace in one of our rooms, and we've still got books in boxes. I need to go through and see if there are any we aren't interested in anymore, but that'll be a huge task! We have a lot of textbooks which are good for years and years, some longer than that, before they need replacing. I love books! [fluffnflowers]
Wow.. sounds great! Thousands of books!!! I bet it will take you ages to go through them. And I would love to join when when you go through them! Cheers and thanks for the response. [positiveminded1977]
I am currently in the midst of arranging my "library". In April of this year, I moved into a house from a one-bedroom apartment. During my packing up, I estimated that I had approximately 5,500 books. The bulk of my move was boxes of books. As I was getting the yard and the house livable ... at least, livable for me ... it's only been since last week that I have started opening those boxes and putting some of the books on shelves. Now I have the time and the inclination to just pull out all my "friends", remembering the good read, finding just the right spot for each one, and maybe re-reading one, or two, or ... it really slows down the unpacking when I'm stopping to re-read an old friend.rolleyes [Winter08]
WOW!! More than five thousand books. They will last you a life time. Got any P. G. Wodehouse in your collection? He is my favorite. :) Cheers and happy mylotting [positiveminded1977]
I have around a hundred books on various subjects ranging from History to Science, Sociology, and of course, fiction. I don't read most of them except fiction, and Sociology sometimes (my favourite that I always read when I do is Masters of Sociological Thought. I have Salman Rushdie's Midnight Children, Shalimar the Clown, The Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, scores of short story collections, Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpretation of Maladies, and a few thrillers (I dispense with most of them). [jasbir_pro]
Sure sounds like a good collection. Thanks for your response! :) [positiveminded1977]
I may have about that number also. I have sold some of mine over the years but it seems like i am always accumulating new ones to take their place. I am expecting another one from Amazon just this week. I to arrange mine just in an order that makes sense like tallest to smallest or something like that. I think arranging by subject matter might be a better idea but I dont know what that would look like on the shelf. [snowy22315]
I have not yet discovered the perfect arrangement for books. We tried numbering them once, but someone would turn up and mix up all the numbers! Yes, arranging them by subject is a great idea, but I ran into a problem there too. I simply couldn't figure out which subject some books belonged to. :) Cheers and thanks for the response [positiveminded1977]
i tend not to buy a lot of current books, yet i do have quite a few very old books in my library. i have collected old books for quite awhile and have lots that i like to check into once in awhile. [cher913]
Hi cher, I think the oldest author I have is Cervantes' Don Quixote. Very difficult to read! Cheers and thanks for the response [positiveminded1977]
I probably have between 500 and 1000 books. I have a 9 x 9 built in book shelf in my library where I keep all of the non-fiction books, mostly about WWII. My fiction is all up in the attic on 6 bookshelves. I have read about 75% of them but am always picking up more so that when I retire, I won't run oout of reading material. [sandyrusty]
That's a great idea, purchasing books so you don't run out of reading material when you retire. :) [positiveminded1977]
I haven't taken inventory recently. However, I know that I have in the four digits somewhere.... [wilsongoddard]
Lolz, sounds great! Thanks for the response. I wish I had so many books too, but then I have no place for so many books. :) [positiveminded1977]
Let me ask you some clarification.. Are you asking about the books that i have borrowed , and that which never returned.. or those something which i brought on my own, but never lent, to any one.. [saivenkaat802003]
LOL, sai, you are really a very interesting character! How many years are those books overdue? You had better avoid the librarian. As far as I know, librarians are ferocious individuals who love books although they don't read a word of any book themselves. Cheers and thanks for the response! [positiveminded1977]
Hey, this is one time that I am able to reply as to the number of books I have - exactly 383 books. I've been going to book sales very often nowadays, and half the time, I wasn't sure if I've bought or read the book before. I couldn't remember what books I've - so I did a list, which I would bring along with me. I've got old favourites like Sherlock Holmes, Alfred Hitchcock's collection of horror stories, some Agatha Christie - I'm looking forward to collecting more lol. Have a good day and happy posting! [lazeebee]
I have a few Sherlock Holmes books too, and I remember I read heaps of Alfred Hitchcock and Agatha Christie. I really loved reading those! Cheers and thanks for the response. [positiveminded1977]
I have a bunch of books in my home library separated by different catergories. My brother is a book lover, he use to buy books. He has a whole series of harry potter. I often read books, when i'm free. [harishv]
I have the entire series of Harry Potter too, but not the hard copies. I have them in my computer. :) Cheers and thanks for the response. [positiveminded1977]
Our home library has suffered with several long distance moves in which we had to decide what books were most important. However, we recently went to a used bookstore sale. They have good prices anyway with most things being $3 or less, however for the month of July they are selling things at 75% off the normal prices. We bought $134 worth of books (seven large boxes and several plastic bags). All in all there were probably about 300 books from there and then we probably owned 150-200 not counting our son's books (which are in his room on his book shelf). We love books (in fact we are going back to the used book sale this weekend as well)! [aidenofthetower]
Hi aiden, it must be great to be part of a book loving family. We are a book loving family too, always taking advantage of the sales. :) Cheers and thanks for the response. [positiveminded1977]
Hi Sonia this is Prof Saraf back again thanks to mylot. When I retired in Apr 2006 I had about eight almiraful of books, mostly on Phyics and electronics, astrology, numerology. I donated the text books that I received as specimen to the diff college libray where I had worked. Now I have three almirahfull left. Have a nice evening. [bhubaneshwar]
Welcome back, professor! I wouldn't touch any physics or electronics book, but the astrology and numerology books sure sound interesting. :) Do you prepare astrological charts (Jatakas)? I got mine done once, but I don't think it is accurate. You see, everybody has forgotten what time I was born. :) Cheers and happy mylotting [positiveminded1977]
I have no idea but I would guess in the hundreds stashed in various areas throughout the house. My wife reads a lot and I seldom read actually. She buys a lot of books at garage and rummage sales for her reading pleasure. We don't arrange the books as most are just stuck on a shelf or in a box after either or both of us are done with them. We give some away after we are finished with them as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~ [webeishere]
I simply love books, and if you are in the habit of giving them away, I guess I would rush to be the first in line!! :) Cheers and thanks for the response [positiveminded1977]
I just have a pile of books on a shelf. I once wanted to start a library at home but could never get down to it because I buy books to read and I don't have enough time to do all that I want in reading. Its nice to collect books but then sometimes you need to trade or exchange in order to keep your reading going anyway. [Bluepatch]
You sure have a point there! Thanks for your response, Bluepatch! [positiveminded1977]
i dont have any such library at home i just read some short story books and comics, magazines etc but i just throw it away as i cant manage it at home, if at all i need a book to read by renowned author i just goto some library near by or i goto my college library to grab in books. [shana123]
I love comics, too. My favorite is Tintin. Thanks for your response. [positiveminded1977]
We literally have thousands of books and really no place to organize or even display them. So unfortunately I have box after box full stored in a upstairs closet. Then I have a whole other library on my computer! Probably at least 200-300 ebooks and about 40 audio books. My husband also has several hundred books on his computer, a few are repeats of what I have but most are not. We have books from Ancient Greek art to gardening to physics to sci-fi novels to Zoroastrianism and just about everything in between. Can you tell we do a lot of reading around here? We both read almost every single day with very few days off. lol [craftcatcher]
I am green with envy. LOL... wish I had that many books. I have a few eBooks too, the entire series of Harry Potter, in fact. :) Cheers and happy mylotting [positiveminded1977]
I have over five hundred books in my home library. [shopgirl]
Positive I think we are in the 150, 200 range. We had to lean our library down over 2 years ago when we bought our new home. I hated to see some of those books go but at least they went for a good cause and that was a book sale to fund our new home town library. [Angelwhispers]
It sure is sad to see books go, especially the ones you love. Still, you have a sizable library, and I am sure you will get more soon. Cheers and thanks for the response. [positiveminded1977]
I haven't arranged the books in my library since I moved and that was over a year ago. All my books are in boxes so I have no clue how many books I have now. Because I'm working on my degree in education, I'm always adding books to my library every couple of weeks due to assignments. lol The last book I read was My First Year as a Teacher by Pearl Rock Kane. I loved it and it gave me great insight into what I could look forward to. I'm planning on reading another book soon since I have a month off of school to rest. This is my current interest of everything. Unfortunately, not a lot of people on here post about teaching.thumbdown [fafinette79]
Yeah, that's why I've decided to teach college students and try to be an online professor. I think it takes too much to be a primary or secondary teacher. During my field experience, I noticed that teachers spend all day and all night at the schools. I must have a life of my own. [fafinette79]
Since my house is a small one I don't have a home library. I do however have a public library available to me that is so close that I can step out my front door stand on the porch and see it very well from my house. So all though I don't have a home library and I love to read I have the public library well within reach. [sunshinelady]
You are really lucky to have a library so close by. I have to go the city to borrow a book. :) Cheers and happy mylotting [positiveminded1977]
My current library is a bunch of banker's boxes. Because of that I have gotten rid of 100's of books and only kept the ones that I read again and again or often refer to. At one time I was collecting books so that when ever I had a guest they could go to my library and find a good book to read. But I move so much that I just got too tired of packing them around with me every where I went. The only book on Christianity I have is Bertrand Russell's 'Why I am NOT a Christian'. Hehehe. [zigzagbuddha]
I have heard about it. Wish I could get my hands on a copy. I am sure it will be interesting. :) [positiveminded1977]
in fact.i just barely four books which is new concept english LOL [MIKEDC]
I may have about 100 books mostly fiction. A lot of these were given to me by my neighbors and I haven't read most of them. I do weed them now and then and give them away to friends or the public library book sales. [maddysmommy]
I've had a long college career. I started in Computer Engineering, and found a passion for Criminal Justice. I'm also very hard to convince to sell my books back. As such, I've got an incredible collection of calculus, computer programming, Electrical engineering, literature, history, criminal justice, psychology, and sociology books. I also kept all of my required readings from high school, the classics that one would imagine everyone would have read at some point in their lives. The bulk of my library are text books from classes, but I also have an interest in diving, so there are a number of scuba related books. I'm also big into cooking, so as you'd guess, I have a TON of cookbooks. I guess I'm not in too much of a push to get everything organized. Most of it's in storage. Once I get my own house, I'm sure everything will be brought back out. [rabi9634]
there were about thousand books. We do not have a seperate library at home. The cupboards are in the sitting room. Some of my relatives were in the habit of borrowing books and never returning! So the books are always locked for the use of the family alone. Most of the books are on personality development and religion. [daffodil1949]
I have way more books than I can count in my library. I love them all. I have books that freak out most people in my library. [rogue13xmen13]
I have around 500 books as well, maybe a bit more. WE all love to read in my house and we all have different tastes, that accounts for the amount of books we have:) I actually did work on it today. I had to get rid of one bookcase and spend the rest of the day thinking how and where I was going to put the books that were on it. I ended up finding space for all of them, and all is well :) [arkaf61]
In my home library, I have more or less 20 books there. Most of which come from my college days. Our professors way back used to require us to buy certain books as part of our references. I still read them sometimes. Reading is so much fun as it opens your imagine to no limit. [nengs10]
I have never counted my books so I don't know! I never owned many books until I collected the Harry Potter series as I had never been much of a reader. Most of my books are reference, fact and information. I have probably only got about 30 books, if that. There must be, however, over 100 books belonging to my partner on a bookshelf and then there are the kid's books. The little one really likes books so he has got quite a few. None of the books are in any kind of order although we have just moved house so that might change soon! [pumpkinjam]
I wouldn't really say I have a library, as my collection of books isn't remotely organized. I pile most of my books in stacks, usually sorting them by non-fiction, fiction and reference. I should probably sell most of the fiction, as I rarely reread them beyond a few gems. I do, surprisingly, have a large collection of textbooks that I'm planning to sell. Laziness is holding me back from doing that, apparently. [movicont]
I am not absolutely sure. We have about 200 in the living room, and we have awhole wall in a guest room + e have some in boxes and some at the cabin. It must be more than a 1000. I love books. I read a lot and I like to keep them in my house [teison2]
Nearly i have lot of philosophical books written by saints.Great people like gandhji ,tagore, osha and nehru who have written books wer elal present wiht me and i read those books.I have also comic books.Lot of books like independence and other personla trait are all adorned my library.ALso books like prinicples ,personality development and awareness books are all htere in my personal room library.Mnay books were lost due to zealousy. [harsha04]
Ugh, too many to count! I have two big bookcases at home, then more books in my bedroom, and my basement is cluttered with yet more books in this one storage area that it has....help! I know I'll never read all these books, yet they just keep accumulating- textbooks, paperbacks, manuals, novels, encyclopedia, etc. I've sold about 10 bags of books by now, yet I still have many left. Oh well, I guess they make for good insulation! [halina23]
i am not collecting books to make a home library. but i have many books at home, many times i gave some books to other people. because i had books for children also. maybe i have nearly 300 books at home , novels and educational.. when i was studying for advanced level exam in School , i bought most of books. but now i am studying in the university in a different stream, so i am not using the most of books i bought before.. [zhizunbao]
Oh my goodness i have over 500 books!! I am a complete book worm. I probably would have much more if i were not a library asistant and i dont necessarily have to buy all of my books. I am a very avid reader and i go through a book a week or two weeks depending on the size of the particular novel that i am reading. Hopefully when i am a little older and have a house of my own, i will have my very own library that i can sit and relax in. [punkin1803]
I don't have many books in my library UNLESS they are some type of book I might go back to for reference. I keep books I've used for Bible Studies mostly because not too many people want them once they've been written in! Since most of my reading for enjoyment is reading fiction, I utilize the local library, in order to save money and space. I wouldn't have room to keep that many books anyway. [renitaperrone]
Hello positiveminded, Well I am sitting now in my study and I am surrounded by eight bookcases. They contain roughly 1,500 books. :-) However, I have to admit that I have not read them all, as I bought over 1,000 books last Christmas from a House-Sale and I intend to sell them through Amazon. I have a few by my bed, which I am reading, but I could theoretically bury myself in the library here for a few years :-) Oh! happy me! lol All the best. Umart [umart13]
Ah, what a lovely life! Surrounded by books! Thanks for your response, friend! [positiveminded1977]
I'd have to say back about 2 months ago when i catalogued my books on the shelves with book collector i had 375 books (i just peeked) but I havent added the new books ive gotten at garage sales since. I rearrange my shelves to fit new books in. [saundyl]
I wouldn't even begin to count all of ours! We have 8 tall bookshelves, and at least 15 others (I didn't go downstairs to count how many are there, but I know there are at least 4 down there.) of various sizes. All of the shelves are packed, some with double rows, most have books stacked on top, and we still have boxes we haven't unpacked. We also have rows of books on top of desks and headboards, and piles on coffee tables and end tables. We have one tall bookshelf for cookbooks, plus some in the bottom of the china cabinet, and many boxes still downstairs, one tall bookshelf for religious, plus more in boxes, 2 1/2 tall bookshelves and 4 smaller bookshelves for craft books, plus more scattered throughout the other shelves and many boxes still to unpack, and the other shelves are mixed. (The bottom half of one of the tall craft bookshelves has kids books.) [i12read]
i have 30 books in my library but i am not read all of there book i dont like to read a book is boring hobbies to read book. i spend my times to surfing to internet?.. all book in my library to not? because no one in my family interest to red a book?.. my family all b.c and me is b.c too no time to read a book because that hobbies read a book is borings?..happy postings?......... [ken18neth]
I don't know how many books we have, but I can tell you they cover a great many subjects and genre's both fact and fiction. I have some very old editions of the Dickens Classics through to the latest Dean Kootnz 'Thriller' My husband and son are also avid readers and we hate parting with books, but so as not to become totally inundated, I have a sort out of the fiction every so often. (Usually when I've run out of bookcases) If no-one wants to re-read it, it goes. If it's by a favourite author or one of a 'series' they are kept. At present half the books are in boxes, the other half waiting to be packed. We are having the heating system replaced and having to redecorate, so I'll be having a good sort out shortly. Or perhaps I might just buy a bigger bookcase! LOL. Enjoy your reading! [Annmac]
I love Dickens, though he is a bit difficult to read sometimes. I have titles such as "David Copperfield," "Bleak House," "Great Expectations," and "Pickwick Papers." :) And I have read other Dickens titles too. I simply loved "Tale of Two Cities." If I get a chance, I am going to read it again. Cheers and thanks for your response. [positiveminded1977]
Hello my dear positiveminded1977 Ji, Well, my father has a habit of keeping books on various topics and arranging them as well as per subject like a librarian maitains. He has books on grammer by Wren & martin, he has Trignometry by Loni, he has some books on Hindi from my great grand father, he has lot many novels of Hindi/English and also wherever he goes, he brings a pamphelet such as when he went to Wall-Disneyland, he brought many. he loves. All books are enetered in his data banks. Recently he helped a apoor person and gifted all Hindi novels to trun a small library. He always looks for proper and suiotable persons. He is keeping all out Notes/books/practical works. He tells taht is his life line. have a great day.rasp [shalu1975]
I would estimate approximately 25.000 to 30,000 hard covers, 100,000 paperbacks, 10,000 text books, travel guides, dictionary's, etc. I can't even count the amount of Cookbooks, how to books, etc. and yes, fortunately they are all in order. If they weren't we could never find what we were looking for! happy [sagesunicorn]
Oh I have so many that I cannot begin to count them. I have a three shelf and four shelf bookcase all full, I have a ward robe half full, I have the top of a secretary full of pocketbooks, I have a shelf of my closet full, plus I have a bookcase at the edge of my computer desk full. Oh the three shelf bookcase should have been a six case as I have a bunch up there. That does not count the cookbooks. So I have a very fill closet thank you. I really should make a list of the books I have read, so I do not read them twice, but since I am a Jane Austin fan, I usually read those books at least three times. I have only read one Christian fiction book, but I have quite a few non-fiction. Most of my books are classics, with some serious romance, mystery, suspense, etc. [suspenseful]
If I had the energy and enthusiasm, and if I were online write now, I could go and check for you. I'm a Bookcrossers (www.bookcrossing.com) and every single one of my books, barring a couple which I've only just acquired, is registered on the bookcrossing website. I'm guessing that we're talking a thousand or so at home just now. It's difficult to tell without going to the website though, as most of them are stuffed in boxes in the caravans to save space just now. I've promised myself that I'm going to have a library when we complete the new house, and I can have them all out. I don't tend to keep my fiction books once I've read them. Once I'm through with them I rarely want to read them again so I give them away. So most of the books I have just now I have not read yet. I stock up when I can! [GreenMoo]
Hi GreenMoo, nice to see you again. I sort of missed seeing you around. And what happened to that lovely blue star? What is Bookcrossers? I have never heard of it. It sounds interesting though, so I will check it out. Cheers and happy mylotting [positiveminded1977]
I honestly lost count...I have probably over 500 and mounting...I just go to yard sales and veer towards the books section...I found a book that has a John Le Carr signature inside...still have to see if it is the real mc coy [gtdonna]
Sure sounds great. Thanks for your response. :) [positiveminded1977]
Really too many to count. Enough that I have traded some of them on Book MOOCH. And I still have a book case full. That doesn't include all of my daughters books either. Hers are the only one I arrange. Her book case tends to get a bit messy. [ersmommy1]
I don't know how many I have. They are stacked everwhere because my bookshelves are full. [Bd200789]
Good to be surrounded by books, my friend. Thanks a lot for the response. Cheers! [positiveminded1977]
I haven't actually taken the time to count them, but I do believe I have hundreds of them. [kellys3ps]
Thanks a lot for your response [positiveminded1977]
Not too many, a few dozens perhaps. I seldom buy books because I don't have unlimited money and space. rasp And so, I normally borrow most things I read from the public libraries. happy Arrangement? No arrangement. I just put them on the bookshelves or stuff them into available space in drawers. [lordwarwizard]
I don't keep a library of books. I used to but since I have moved around so much in the past 10 years I have given them all away. Now I don't keep them at all. As soon as I have finished reading a book I give it away right away so someone else can enjoy it too. Or I keep them and when I have three of them I trade them in for another one, at the second hand book store I go to. But usually I just give them away. I don't have room where I am now living, for books to be laying around. And since I don't have anywhere particular to put them, they would just clutter up some space better used for other things. So I don't have a library of books. [chrislotz]
