How Old Were You When You First Started Wearing Glasses

I remember when I was around 8 or 9 years old the nurse at school told me that I needed glasses. I was so upset that I would never wear them in school. Back then kids got picked on for wearing glasses. Now it's more accepted by kids. How old were you when you first started wearing glasses?

I was forty and it was a horrible shock for me. I was so upset but now like my glasses as they hide the bags under my eyeslol [cynthiann]
I never thought about glasses hiding bags before. Maybe I need to wear mine more often. [Shar19]

I started using them last year at the age of 25. But I use them only while working on the PC. I am an IT person and so, spend way too much time glued to my computer. So I wear my specs, just so my power does not increase. I have minimum eye power and can do without glasses. [cbeee3]
Yeah. But you know what? My elder sister started wearing glasses at the age of 6. And at about the same age, my eyes would hurt when I strained them. So I used to keep visiting the doc, being all paranoid that I had eye-power..LOL lol [cbeee3]

I was pretty early to wear glasses. I had to strain my eyes off from their sockets to read the letters written on the blackboard. maybe I was 10 or 11 that time. Like you i had to deal with that embarrassment. Now my friends wouldn't imagine it would be me sans the glasses. [bodhisatya]
I remember straining to see the blackboard too. I would even wait until after class and sneak upfront to copy everything off the blackboard. Sometimes I would ask my friends if I could copy their notes since I couldn't see them. [Shar19]

Im not exactly sure when i started wearing glasses. I think around 10-12 yrs. I also didnt wear them at school because of being picked on. I used to put them on before leaving the house then take them off before reaching the school. Visa versa for on the way home. One day after going home for lunch i accidently returned to school with the glasses on. Right away a boy saw me and started calling me four eyes. I just wore them after that because the whole school knew shortly after that. How word travels fast. [jdyrj777]
Kids are great for starting terrible rumors aren't they? [Shar19]

I only discovered that I am short sighted when I was in high school. The frequent bout of headaches was the warning that I did not heed not until I went to see a specialist and he confirmed that the cause of my headaches was my eyesight and I needed to wear glasses. [zandi458]
It's funny I think a lot of adults don't even think to get their eyes checked because of headaches. [Shar19]

I was about 10 years old when I started wearing glasses. The same thing happened to me. We used to have annual eye check ups at our school (as well as hearing check ups) and the nurse told me I needed glasses. It didn't come as a big shocker to me, especially since I was the only one who couldn't see the board i class. I wasn't upset. I just lived with it. [lala501]
I guess it's a good thing that the schools do the exams huh? [Shar19]

I was in play school, that's what we used to call preschool. My eyes were so bad that the world was a blur and nobody knew. I thought it was normal, being a child with no frame of reference. I don't remember ever not wearing glasses! I had lasik a few years ago and now only wear glasses when I'm driving, although I can see well enough if I were to lose them. [dragon54u]
I'm VERY happy with lasik! My eyes were so bad that a total correction wasn't possible, but I can see well enough to drive if I have to and if I couldn't wear my glasses I could function quite well. I remember being so surprised after the procedure that I could see peoples' faces instead of featureless blurs! [dragon54u]

My eyes started to go when i turned about 40 and i think that i started wearing glasses when i was about 42 years old [dlr297]
Lucky you for your eyes being good for that long! [Shar19]

I was 11 was told I had a damaged optic nerve not been told that after that but I still have to wear the darn things and contacts ar a no for me! [Lakota12]
Not that I can remeber but I had been hit in the head several time as a kid once where I part my hair boy did it bleed! [Lakota12]

hi Shar I was about the age you were when I found out that I needed glasses. This was in the early thirties, and the glasses'for kids were all round lens like owl eyes.I got teased dreadfully, and would take them off, and put them in my pocket.I hated to be called four eyes and owl eyes. but finally as I got into my teens they began to make other shaped lens and prettier frames so that the glasses did not look ugly. I then realized that with them I had no problem seeing anything, while without I would bump into things, trip over things. I began to learn to like my glasses then.so I have been wearing glasses now for many years. The ones I have now have blue frames which bring out my blue green eyes and my silver hair. so am told they look really good on me. thats a compliment worth hearing. he he.sadangrylol [Hatley]
Thank goodness the style of glasses has evolved. [Shar19]

I was 2 years old when it was discovered that I needed glasses. I was made fun off all thru school, I hated wearing glasses. Now they are a part of me, I also wear contact lenses. [Polly1]

I was 20 when I started wearing eyeglasses. Ironically I deliberately caused my wearing eyeglasses because I was thinking way back then that wearing eyeglasses is cool and makes someone look intelligent. So what I did was read in moving vehicles or in poorly lit areas. Now I don't like wearing glasses since I always misplace I wear contact lenses and wished that I took care of my sight better. [earth2jacq]

I think I was about 6 years old when I started wearing glasses. Till today I really don't know what's exactly wrong with my eyes but I cant see at arm's length without my glasses. When we were children, technology was not that advanced and the only solution to weak eyesight was wearing glasses. Today I see children are being treated in so many ways to enhance the eyesight so that eventually they might no longer need glasses. [sudiptacallingu]

In high school when i see things that do not know, but i did not wear glasses, and even today,i feel no myopic eyes. [suisuideying]

I started wearing glasses at the age of 15.I did not like it in the beginning, but then i was ok.I never had anyone pick me up for wearing the glasses.Well, i still wear glasses. Thanks! [UltimateAsoka]

When I was 12 years old ,I bacame wearing my glsses. From the begin,I do really not like wearing glasses .I think it's a burden. But ,now,it's OK for me.Maybe it can make me handsome. [monkeylong]

since i was 2 yrs old i start wearing my glasses because i had a cataract i don't want to wear them but i have to because i can't see if i don't wear it [ms_jean21]

I was lucky I did not wear glasses until in the forties, but my younger sisters started to wear very early in primary school, resulting from poor lighting in classroom. And it was a pity that her eyesight got deteriorated very quickly because she used a left over from a neighbor. My point is eyes are so important for kids, so whatever you save, never save the expense for glasses, especially for kids. Take care. [zhuhuifen46]

Hello Shar. When I started to wear my glasses, I was in senior high school at the age of fourteen. I found that I could not see the words on the blackboard very clearly. So my father took me to a glass shop to have my eyes tested only to find that I was near-sighted. Then my father got me a pair of eye-glasses. I did not feel good wearing it at the very beginning. But after some time when I got used to it, there was no more problem. Now I am used to wearing it, without which I don't feel myself. lol [williamjisir]

hi friend I am wearing specs/glasses when I was about 30 yrs. During my student life I never used any specs or glass and still I am 45 plus I can read books with bold and cap letter but I feel awkward while reading newspaper article which is very small and computer generated articles. At that time I need glass. pkc3000 [pkc3000]

I was eight when I got my first pair. I have Astigmatism, and I will have it for the rest of my life. [rogue13xmen13]

I am in the late 30's. Up until now, I still do not wear eyeglasses. I do not have any problem with my eyesight. Most of the members of our family also do not wear an eyeglass. I do have a friend that all of the members of the family have to wear eyeglasses. I guess some eyesight problems are also hereditary. [jpso138]

I am owned my first glasses at age 13. Because, almost my best friends were wearing glasses. JUST wearing FOR FUN....20 years later...Became a real power glasses. [ecomforthealth]

Hi Shar, I started wearing glasses since i was high school student. And with time goes through, my glasses become thicker and thicker. It is very unconvenient to me, especially when i play soccer or bastketball. But i get used to wearing it, as i have to wear it. [sutent]

I don't really remember quite sure. I think I was around 10-12 years old. I remember my teacher was worried because I kept squinting my eyes. So I had to sit extra close to the chalkboard until I was able to get my glasses from the optometrist. [nijolechu]

HI Shar, I wear glasses when I was in my primary one level, that is meant I was about 7 years old.pretty young. I could not see clearly on the words written in the blackboard and my mother brought me to doctor to check it out. I was having some eye problem and advisable to wear glasses to prevent my eye degree to get increased up again. I am wearing glasses till now,I have get used to it. Without my glasses, everything just looks blurr and not clear to me. [shia88]

I didnt start wearing glasses until I was in my early 30s...its nto a strong prescription at all and I only have to wear them for reading etc.. [Ravenladyj]

Hi Shar, Your question is very very interesting because of the eye disease rates these days. I remember the time I wore my very first glasses.I was just 9 years old and I was studying 4th grade. It was pain mixed with joy. On one side you have the guilt of an eye disease but on the other side, you have the joy of wearing something new. A power of wisdom. [dfgh123456789]

I started wearing glasses when I was 14 or 15, when i started to not able to see the whiteboard from my favorite spot (on the back of the class) [Zenstrive]

I was in the 4th grade so i guess i was around 8 years old because i was 5 when i started to school. 'm 66 now soon to be 67 & i'm still wearing them. [ANTIQUELADY]

As I recall I was a teenager in college and I had trouble seeing the board. At the time those horrible black horn rimmed glasses were in fashion and actually had glass in the lenses so they were quite heavy and uncomfortable. Now I wear much lighter metal frames with plastic lenses and they are featherweight compared to those first glasses. I guess I am thankful I did not have to wear them as a child. happy [mariposaman]

I don't remember exactly how old I were when I first started wearing glasses, I must have been between 7-10 because I remember I was attending primary school and I'm not wearing any in the first classroom picture that was taken of us. I had some problems thus I had to wear glasses with a patch on my right eye, in order to force the left one. It was disgusting and I always used to take off the patch when my parents weren't watching. Anyway my sight got worse and now I have to wear glasses or lenses on a daily basis, which is okay to me because it's never been such a big problem since EVERYONE in my family (including relatives) is shortsighted eheh [nagikka]

I was seven, then I wore them till I was fourteen then started wearing contacts, only reason I got those is because I didn't wanna play baseball with glasses, since then I wore both, both these days I tend to wear my glasses more, if I do wear my contacts I will wear from a month or so then go back to glasses. [solared]

I was 11 , and i so admire those ppls wearing glasses, they look so smart and pretty for me lol.. stupid la me. Really suffer having myopia . =( [michietan]

I was already 45 years old when I started to wear glasses. They are just reading glasses and I don't wear it all the time. My sight is very good while not reading. I think the frequent use of my eyes unprotected in front of the computer screen is one cause of my deteriorating reading ability. Our eyes are so important to all of us, we need to take care of them properly. [moneymakingtoday]

around 17-year we were having class,i couldn't see the blackboard clearly my mon took me to the hospital,in a nice day, and the doctor let me weard the glasses when we back home [lichee_china]

I was already 45 years old when I first wore my eyeglasses. They are reading eyeglasses only. My vision when not reading is so good. Frequent exposure to the computer monitor may have contributed to the deteriorating eye vision. We should need to take care of our eyes as they are so important. [moneymakingtoday]
oops, I am sorry that I answered twice. I thought that I lost the first one due to connection error so I made another reply. My apologies... [moneymakingtoday]

i have some just for distance-like watching tv,or driving if i did. i was about 13 when i first got them, because i couldn't read the board in school. they asked me why i didn't say anything, but i had no idea my vision was different than other people's at the time.it seemed pretty normal to me. [scarlet_woman]

I am lucky that till now I didn't require to wear glasses. I have a few friends who were glasses and I know that they have been wearing them for quite a long time. One of my friend has been wearing glasses since he was 6 years old. He said that his eyesight is improving slowly as he is getting some surgery done. I hope he gets rid of those glasses very soon. [biman_s]

I think you jinxed me! I replied to this yesterday and this morning I STEPPED ON MY GLASSES!!!! cry Good thing I can see fairly well without them. I have to find an optometrist who is open today and get them repaired. One lens fell out and the frames are bent. I'll be driving with one lens! lol [dragon54u]

Hi Shar19,when I was in junior school ,I begin to put on reading glasses ,and then the class only few people do not wear glasses ,so from that time I regret not reading books or watching TV in a correct posture .So I hope when I have a child in future ,I will make him or she develop good study habits and protect their eyes . Enjoy your life !! [xinerbeauty]

hi shar soon after high school i started wearing glasses. i didn't mind wearing them too. eveyone in my family wears so it was not a problem for me. during college friends started calling my 'specky'. some said i don't look good with them so i stopped using specs while going out of house. well, i avoid wearing my specs but i personally don't feel that i look bad with them. [abanerji]

I was in my first year high school when i first started wearing eyeglasses to correct my astigmatism. I was on eyeglasses until my college years. My astigmatism was corrected but was replaced with migraine.sad [msfrancisco9369]

i was about the same age as you were when you started and i wasnt really picked on for wearing glasses because i didnt have a lot of friends to begin with. my daughter was about the same age and no one really bugged her either but she has a lot of really great friends that wouldnt anyways. [cher913]

I was in 3rd grade because I was getting headaches while reading. I stopped using those glasses the next year because they were not helping. Then in 6th grade I got glasses for distance. I have worn glasses ever since. [jross19871]

I think I had my glasses when I was 23 years old. It's because of my stigmatism that I need to wear one. [d_red_madelaine]

I was about eight years old like you when I had first started wearing glasses. When the school nurse told me that I needed glasses, i was crushed. I did not want to wear them. Kids can be so cruel to other kids, especially when it comes to wearing glasses. I was called every name you can use about wearing glasses. I just wanted to hide some times. if I saw a cute boy and didn't want him to know I wore glasses, I would take them off. The price of vanity! I still wear glasses to this day and found the world was not so bad. Having to wear glasses is not the end of the world. [sender621]

I was 10 years old when I first got a pair of eye glasses. Over the next so many years my eye sight got worse and I noticed that at every eye test. I had my eye glasses for reading but then I got even more short sighted. By age 18 I needed my eye glasses on all day. When I avoided wearing them my couldn't see very clearly. At age 21 years old when I was traveling in Australia I got some contact lenses. It was wonderful to be able to see so very much better than ever before. These days I have contact lenses in the day and eye glasses when I get up in the night time. [maximax8]

I attribute my myopia to my habit.I often read when I walked on my way to home after school. Unbelievable? it's true! Although I walked so slowly, I think it did harm to my eye, then I was fourteen. I got poor eyesight in my senior high school and I have to wear glasses, I am so reluctant to do that! [Emilycyf]

I was 17 then when I first wore my spectacles. Till now, I still don't like wearing spectacles. I still feel uncomfortable in wearing it. So I only wear it only when I needed too. My friends said I looked more intelligent when i wear specs, but i feel that i looked ugly with it. [amy501]

agh I was 7, 2nd grade, and the little nose pieces bothered me, so I my glasses were big squarish brown plastic granny frames. [jebbbbzzzdebebz]

I was probably about 6 or 7 when I started wearing glasses, as far as I know I was born with them I've been wearing them so long..lol. I don't think it took too much to get me to keep wearing them even in school, I can't really remember. I have three nephews that are supposed to be wearing glasses but they won't do it, one said they make him look like a dork, you know how kids are. Hopefully they will start wearing them regularly maybe they'll notice their eyesight is better with them. [walijo2008]

I was the same age, about 9, when I was told I would need glasses. This was in the 1970's, so I too was called a four eyes. What was worse, was that I was a 'fat four eyes' with thick glasses. Needless to say, kid-hood was absolutely no fun at all that was gladly left behind! Yech! [CraftyCorner]

I no very remember when me start wearing glasses. But if no wrong i thing is start at my 10 or 11 year old start wearing glasses. They time is me always tell teacher me can't saw the black board for teacher writing. So teacher ask it's u want wearing glasses, ask me tell my mom to try got shop check.First time wearing glasses also upset because at school all friend never saw me wearing the glasses. That time is my start to wearing glasses. [celineml]

Hi Shar, I never been used the glasses for my sight and also I am well and healthy person don't be required the glasses for the eyes, and also some of my friends would have wear the glasses at the age of 5 and 6 due to the eye's sight problems. Most of the kids are recently having the problems on the eye sight due to the lack of the nutrients in the foods and that is the reasons we have seen many more kids wear the glasses in the school . But we can not see the kids who are wear the glasses at most of the developed countries because of the good nutrients foods. Have a nice day. [Binthu]

Lol i had problem in reading small letters in print at about 40, my doctor advised to wear glasses but i managed for 2 years more, lastly i had to use glasses, then since last year i am also using glasses to view distant objects. Thank you so much for starting this nice discussion here. happy keep sharing, have a great day, cheersraspHappy posting. ARUN [arun2009]

I first started wearing glasses at the age of 13. Now 47 years later I am still wearing. Back then it was myopic. But now I use progressive glasses. Some call it multi-focal glasses. [JamesKYTan]
