Books: Do you think it is still important? Why do we need books and why should it better than online information we see everyday? Why do read books? alot of people out there find reading novels and other type of literature boring because it is too much word to only mean one simple thing.
Should we be alarmed that more and more kids arent into books anymore and prefer to research online for stuff about school?

Books were the windows to the world during the last century. The onslaught of the internet and visual media shake the empire of written letters and we started getting glued to electronic media whether T.V. OR Internet. But the books are still relevant since you can read the same at leisure anywhere and everywhere, mark and make notings , read again , and above all it is soothing for the eyes.one cannot read for hours together in the monitor and that may damage your eyes and health. Traveling time is the time to read books. you can' t do that with a laptop for obvious reasons discomfort and cost. Importance of books have still not deteriorated and you can see the Book "You can Win" by shiv khera selling like hot cakes though many a seminar was conducted by him based on the book. i like books . however much information and fast is available on the net the concentration and the enjoyment you get out of reading a book can never be got by other means. when you read a book there are no distractions and you become one with it.i like Wodehouse books and George Mikes [soorimd]

Hey sechsey!! Books can never be replaced by info on net though internet is vastly expanding and is shrinking all the information of this world The reasons I prefer books to net 1. Reading books can be done even when you sleep , when you eat..lolzz. But online stuff needs eye starin using computers or laptops 2. Though there are ebooks, one can't sit and read 500 or 600 pages in a system and they will have to resort to print outs for large number of pages, whereas buying books is cheaper and portable. 3. It is wonderful to own a library collection of books rather than have thousands of online novels. The hardcover books value is always there and nothing can replace them. 4. Internet info provides only overview of many fields of engineering. It is the books which explain things clearly. Online books too can't be studied all the way through computer. In spite of online books and resources I still love reading books. I have more books than dresses. Books can be brought anywhere I go and I still enjoy reading while lying down; over a glass of juice and I also enjoy putting notes and underlining quotations and thoughts that I like. [genchamp]
Yes, I think books are very important. I think we need books to keep us sane and help us to become patient people, after all searching for information is not easy when we deal with books. To some extent, yes we should be alarmed that kids are reading from the monitor rather than from books, one of the reasons of course is bad eyesight. I love reading books! I do think books are somewhat on the back burner because of the internet.Some peoople may feel that they do not need to waste their money on purchasing books anymore because of the available information on the website.I only have one computer and my kids seem to want to take over so sometimes i would prefer the books when the computer is not available. I think that the Internet has really helped to speed up research and I don't know how I managed before I had it. However, I do still like to curl up with a good book and I would like to think that my children would do the sam ething. I think books are still very important because a lot of people don't enjoy reading from a screen. It can be very uncomfortable for the eyes, and cause damage to them. I am not sure why they statistically say more and more kids aren't into books. Perhaps that's a scare tactic of some kind to try and spread panic, but I know the majority of people my husband and I have known encourage reading in their children and provide a good example. We did the same thing with our daughter while she was growing up, and she has always been one of the top readers in her class. I love reading both paperbacks and hardcovers. I know a lot of times if I download an e-read, I would rather print it off and read it at my leisure than sit in front of the PC to read it. It's important to keep books until they find ways to make reading offscreen safer for the eyes, but eventually I can see more and more books disappearing and public libraries will be accessed via the internet from home. It's already becoming like that with so many of the classics available to read for free online. I think if they make it convenient, something you can toss into your purse or knapsack and go with, then reading without books won't be a problem, and eventually they will become a thing of the past. I can see the downside definitely being the lack of reliability and stability of batteries and electric powered objects. Imagine being at the park with your favorite ebook and your battery dies! I am still an avid reader. Books are tangible and satisfying. Ebooks make me cross-eyed. Big stores like Barnes and Noble seem popular enough, but I think small, personable, cozy bookstores are almost a thing of the past (unfortunately). [JanieJetz]

If there's anything I spend money on, it's books. I'm currently getting my publishing degree, so I've been involved in discussions like this numerous times. It scares me that students look more toward the internet than tangible books for research, entertainment, etc.. A book is a permanent entity. E-books and websites can easily be lost or destroyed; books have a shelf life much longer than any technology. We need to get people interested in reading books again.. having a tangible book is a lot more personal than staring at a computer screen. [ancazur]

I still read books and paperbacks. I will never give that up. Ebooks can't match a good novel. I do not want to sit at my computer for hours reading an ebook-novel. Yuck. The Internet is good for finding information and whatnot. You can take a book anywhere and read it anywhere. And I don't have to worry about someone stealing it like I might with a note book computer. I don't know if we should be alarmed at kids not reading books. Some of my friends told me that reading books are an old habit as internet developed through our daily lives. Maybe they right but somehow for me books are still great even compared to movies. I noticed that novel is able to show more detail of a story than the movie. The last comparison I made is for "Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown, and according to me the book is much better than the movie. nothing beats a good old pocketbook..I am not into those e-books..i still like buying pocketbooks in bookstores so that i can lie down and read it while waiting for myself to doze off.. I think books are still and will continue to be important. Information on the internet to me is like that on newspapers. However, books are totally different thing. You can't easily find so much details on a subject online as it is in a book. As for novels, they are never boring. I don't read novels just for the main idea, they are for entertainement. There is nothing that can compare to the relaxation of a book in your hands when you are settling down for bed and just want that little quiet moment.
