While I crocheted two baby blankets I listened to 3 different stories on Audiotape...All of them had a woman reading the story...I love to read but when I Crochet I can't read and crochet at the same time....*smiles*...so I listen to the Audiobooks..
Anyway...I can't say I didn't like them..but sometimes it was confusing with all the different characters..Because the woman was reading it the voice she used for the men characters didn't seem real..Understandable though...and there were a few times I thought the women's voices sounded alike..
I love to read and prefer to read the book myself instead of listening to audiotapes...but they do come in handy when I am crocheting...
How do you feel about audiotapes? Do you like listening or reading? Does it matter to you?

I haven't listened to any audio books since I was a kid...you know the ones you read along to and there is a chime to tell you to turn the page, lol. I have an aunt who downloads audio books and puts them on her iPod to listen to while she runs and stuff. I've never really gotten into audio books. I just like the actual sensation of reading than hearing a story. [kel1483]
I remember those books...LOL...I am like you, I like to read it and it makes me feel like I am actually there..*smiles* [Feona1962]
Ah I love to read, my life is pretty hectic. Audiobooks have been a joy for me, since I can "read" whie driving. I want the news on the way to work, but most other times, I love to hear a good book! [cobrateacher]
They definitely come in handy for you then...I do like them but prefer to read it myself.. [Feona1962]
I like audiobooks once in awhile if you are on a long stretch in the car. We listened to some one time when we drove like two thousand miles or so from Wash DC to Yellowstone. The last time I was listening to one I got kind of disinterested in it in parts. It was OK, but I still couldnt tell you completely what happened. [snowy22315]
I know what you mean..I was wondering where the story was going and it seemed to go on and on...LOL [Feona1962]
I haven't tried listening to an audio book before. I have tried reading an e-book but found it hard on my eyes. [maddysmommy]
Hi Maddysmommy... My husband reads e-books everyday..He is reading Harry Potter fan-fiction..People write what they think happens in the Potter stories and they send them to him to critique... I haven't read any e-books... [Feona1962]
Since I'm legally blind, I grew up "reading" audio books - first from the talking book program and "graduated" to the "pro" books. I have a very boring data entry job and audio books are my lifeline. I can be traveling in the TARDIS, fighting Weevils with Captain Jack, exploring with Lewis and Clark, fighting Dracula, etc. and still doing copy/paste all day. Music can be fun, but this way I'm learning too. My roommate spends a lot of time in her car. She takes me to work, then drives from one job to another, then to bring me home and listens to books while she drives - she says it makes the trip faster. [dark4eyes]
Hi dark4eyes... Then audio books are a great asset to your life...I think that is wonderful...I took care of a lady that is legally blind and she too listens to audiobooks..She would get them sent in the mail to her and when she finished would send them back and get more... I love to listen when I am crocheting..Times flys when I'm having fun.... [Feona1962]
I think reading books is much more fun. When listening all our attention is on the teller. We have to concentrate on whatthe person is saying. When reading we can read at our own pace. Also while reading we can imagine a lot, think a lot.So reading is preferable. [henry140468]
Hi henry... I have to agree with you that reading the book is actually better for me too! But the audio tapes are great for those that don't read.. [Feona1962]
hey i was listening to audio books when i was child. my mom used to make out of this instead of telling story during the sleeptime. now a days am not doing it as i feel its like a child thing. instead reading books gives me good pass time than these audio books. rarely i used to read ebooks as i was not much eager to read books on computers.. happy mylotting! [meenunapa]
Hi meenunapa... I can understand how you feel... I don't read e-books but my husband does... [Feona1962]
I have not listened to an audio book in a long time. I feel like I have a lot of projects going on and this might be a good way to take some of the work out of it. I have listened to my kids books on cd's and they were fun. [happythoughts]
I listen when I crochet blankets and it does help pass the time...and I don't want to lose any valuable reading time..I love to read... [Feona1962]
I recently listened to part of an audiobook and find it quite hard to concentrate. Reading books is a lot easier as you can return to whatever you were reading immediately, irregardless of what interrupted you. If you were listening to an audiobook then it'd be harder cause then you have to rewind and try to find which part sounds familiar, and resume at that point. Some audiobooks also sound awfully drab and monotonous. It might be good for instruction books, but as far as story books go, paper is much more immersive. [likaes]
I agree with you..I would rather read it myself...I feel more a part of the story when I do read it... [Feona1962]
i prefer to reading rather than listening ,, [rowe0525]
I can't wrap my head around audio books. I love to read, although I don't get to do it as much as I like to, but for some reason, the thought of having someone read to me just doesn't excite me. Maybe I should borrow one from the library and take a listen, perhaps I don't know what I'm missing. I too can imagine that it's kind of confusing when one person reads the whole story. When I read to myself, somehow all the characters take on voices of their own inside my head. [auntiedis]
I have a different voice in my head for all the characters in my book and I think they sound better to me than the ones on audio... [Feona1962]
My husband loves to listen to audiobooks in the car on long trips. They put me right to sleep. He would rather I read to him but after awhile it gives me a stomach ache. I have read him two full books on car trips. I don't care much for audiobooks but I never really did like being read to. I have always preferred reading to myself. [moneyandgc]
I haven't ever read a book aloud.....except for my grandkids....but not one that is 400 pages long which are the ones I like to read... [Feona1962]
Hello Feona, I think I prefer reading the book by myself. Of course I can't do that while both my hands are busy doing other stuff, there is no thrill to listen to the audiotape *sighs* It is helpful if you want to do two things at one time but as I said before, I prefer to read by myself happy [gr8life]
Hi there!happy Yes! I have been listening to audiotapes. It's advantageous in a way cause you can still do other things while listening. Like what you did, you crocheted while listening. Me, I listen to it whenever I travel. It keeps me entertained even if I'm travelling alone. But when I'm at home, I prefer to read a book. It's how I spend some quiet time by myself sitting on a sofa. With books I can also take notes on the book itself or highlight some important facts and you can't do that with audiotapes. Both are good for me. It just depends on what situation I maybe. Ciao!wink [iskayz]
I never travel alone so I don't use them then...always have my hubby to talk too! But if I ever did that would be a great way to pass the time...I prefer to read them myself... [Feona1962]
I like to listen to the book and read it, this way I know exactly what I am reading. I have a slight reading disorder, so it works for me. [rogue13xmen13]
Now that would be a great idea...never thought of doing it that way..I'm glad that it helps you... [Feona1962]
listening to audio music is not so good then the reading books . Listiening to audio make mind disturbed and make to think anyother things. [kisanchhantyal]
I can understand that.... [Feona1962]
I haven't really tried listening to Audio book. But my officemates has got lots of them and she usually listens to it when she's at home and doing household chores...she said its giving her more energy when shes cleaning the house at the same time listening to the story. I'm even borrowing one of her Audio book but haven't really tried listening to it yet. I'll try to find time on it maybe this weekend because she keeps telling me its a nice story and she doesn't want to tell me whats its all about, and thats whats making me look forward to it. [daryljane]
It's nice she doesn't tell you..that way if you want to know you have to listen to it... [Feona1962]
I'd rather read than listen. Because when i read, i don't only get to enjoy what I'm reading but I get to enrich my vocabulary as well. [genzachzoe]
i prefer to read the book. i have never listened to an audio book but i never did like to be read to. lol use to have a friend that listened to them in her car. said she didn't have time to sit down at home & read. [ANTIQUELADY]
Me too! I don't like to be read to either but when I crochet I don't want to lose my reading time... [Feona1962]
Yes, I do like the audio books. As I don't have English as a native language, the audio books really help you with some of the pronunciations. It can become very boring if every now and then you have to consult a dictionary for the correct pronunciation. Moreover, the audio books are fun listening to because you can get the feel of the emotions attached with the different dialogues, especially if it is a novel. So, final word, audio books are awesome. [abdulhaseeb86]
Hi abdulhaseeb.. That is a great way to learn a language....and a dictionary doesn't actually tell you how to pronounce it...You still have to figure it out...But with someone actually saying it to you makes it easier.... [Feona1962]
I prefer reading a book than listening to it because i love to keep my mind busy by visualizing the characters and the events that happen in the story. Maybe for some audio books work but for me, i dont like it much. [ganda8831]
Hi ganda... Such a cute avatar...I have to agree with you...I really get into my stories and sometimes I feel like I know the characters so well.... [Feona1962]
It doesn't matter to me, though with audio I would have to be doing something like you do with the crocheting because I find it hard to just sit still..I have tried getting my son to also listen to stories, but he prefers the book version with pictures at this time.. [carmelanirel]
I only had 3 audiobook stories so until I get more I am watching movies while I crochet.... I have a couple of childrens books that my grandsons love to listen too! [Feona1962]
I tried listening to one years ago didnt get to far for it was a Steven King one and I didnt want anyone in the house listening to it to for the language in it lol. I would rather read myself! [Lakota12]
I prefer to read a book rather than listen to it being readrolleyes. In your case its good as you are finishing the reading stuff and are concentrating on the croheting. For me I need to re read something which I like.I dont really hurry through a book by rushing through pages.I take my time and read it.drool [biggerb]
i purchased some audio books and e-books (some i only downloaded), along with traditional paper books.. they all have different plus points.. paper books are very safe to bring anywhere (good for display too at your home), compared if you bring your ipod or pda to listen or read your audio & e-books.. audio books are nicer to listen to compared to e-books who talks like a robot.. because i have no time to read paper books nowadays (i tend to browse the internet at home) so i put my audio books in my car mp3 player or even in my mobile phone.. that way i can listen to them while driving or whenever i want to.. [luiscpatag]
I prefer to read, although I have to admit I never listened to an audio book. the reason is because when I was in school, and someone read out loud, I always read faster in my head, and I'd wind up spacing out waiting for them to catch up. Even when people talk to me, if they take too long to get to the point I space out on them. (I'm from NYC and we do everything fast, LOL) It does sound like an efficient way to 'read' a book while my hands are occupied. I may have to try it someday, our library offers audio books. [thelastwolf113]
If the audiobook is in my language, yes, I would find it easier to listen to that too when i am tired of reading, or doing something else. It would be like listening to a play/drama on radio and I am quite used to that. But one last ebook that I downloaded is only available on Audio. So I downloaded it and it's in English. I can't understand a thing. It has become more difficult because they use old english like thy, thou, est like "thinkest" or "doest", it's quite funny. I have resorted to buying and downloading the written form instead, because when it comes in english. written is far easier to understand to me than spoken. [crisesand]
Actually, I haven't tried to listening audio books, but despite that, I think I will prefer reading. It just that, I think I will not understand all the dialogues as well as not quite appreciate it unlike if I read the book. Also, I find it quite easy to go back to my favorite parts if I am reading it. So, I really prefer reading the book than listening to audio books. happy [kylie_quistis]
I prefer reading the books myself because I have a better understanding of what I'm reading. If something comes up that I don't understand or want to go over again I would have to rewind just to hear it again. This is referring to my school work though so of course that takes more concentration and review. If it's just a story or something I'm sure listening to an audiobook would be more preferable, especially if there's something else that I have to do at the same time. Lol the only thing is that with me sometimes my mind might drift off to other things listening (but then again that happens to me when I read once in a while too). If I had to choose though I would have to say reading the book myself. I can finish faster and concentrate better. [Chastised_Dreamz]
I like audiotapes or recorded material for study sessions - at uni, we can download lectures and play them at our own discretion, and I find pre-recorded lectures combined with active study (in comparison to tedious note-taking or simplistic online practice quizzes) a very effective method of retaining module content. But for fiction, and general relaxation, I don't think there's really much that can beat the curling up in a warm, quiet corner with a good book. [Mercurial]
I love to read, and crochet! And yes, it's not something you can do both of at the same time. I usually do either one while I'm watching tv because it's hard for me to just sit there sometimes and watch tv. I've never listened to an audio book, although I downloaded a free one on i-Tunes to see if I'd like it. Maybe I'll listen to it tomorrow on the way to PA, I have a 3 hour drive so that might be good. [reinydawn]
I love audio books because, like you, I can do something else while listening to the story. Once in a great while, I get one that has two narrators, one for the male parts and one for the female parts. Since this is such a rarity, I just pretend that I am the one who is reading the book aloud. [bellis716]
I like listening to audio books and I also like to read, but sometimes I find the latter difficult when the print is so small and yet I do not like to read the large print books as the print is too large and I prefer it just a little larger then regular. I would prefer with the audio books, that they have two readers, a man for the male voices and a woman for the female voices because unless you have a gruff voice it is hard for a woman to make a male voice and when a man talks in a woman voice, all the sweet innocent heroines sound the same. The trouble is that I rely on my aural and visual memory, so when I listen to the audiobook I am paying close attention and cannot concentrate on anything else and so for me it is no different than reading. [suspenseful]
I have tired, but my mind wanders to much to keep track of what they are saying. I have a cassette tape of a women reading "The Nutcracker" and it is fabulous. My dad gave it to my son when he was 5 and he jus tloved that story and the nutcracker. I started collecting nutcrackers for him and at age 18 he had 56 different nutcrackers! That story and the narrator are just fabulous. It is on cassett and I no longer have a cassette player so I am holding on to the tape hoping one day I can find a way to copy it to CD for my grand daguhter. THey will love it too! [coffeebreak]
i tried listening to an audio book once.. i did not enjoy it very much. i guess it depends on each person whether he or she would just like to listen or something but for me, i still prefer to read them at my own pace. [chiyosan]
I don't like them. To me, reading means holding a book and seeing the written word. I've listened to self-help/spiritual tapes a handful of times, usually while driving, but I couldn't just sit and listen like what you describe, I would get zero enjoyment out of that. When I crochet, I have the TV on or pop in a movie. I also crochet when in the car (if someone else is driving, of course). I can't just sit and do nothing, and I find crochet to be very relaxing, and you get something nice as a result too. No, audio books would definitely bore me to tears. I can't watch a movie on my computer either, nor can I tolerate an eBook (unless I'm just quickly looking for information). [Ldyjarhead]
I think I prefer reading. Its kinda weird listening to someone who reads for you. Would probably feel like I am in a seminar which I really try to avoid attending. Reading is still the best for me because you can hear your own voice inside your head. Hehehe. [mchavez11]
for me i preferred reading books than listening to audio tapes, I've tried listening to audiotapes before, but i do not enjoy it, and most i do not understand it. actually i would stand to read ebooks over the net instead of audiotapes though I would have a painful eyes after, heheheh but still i enjoy it.
