responses and comments:
Your son is 11 years old and he should really be reading many things for him to learn. The best book ever is the Holy Bible. I hope you include some of these especially GENESIS, EXODUS, LEVITICUS (Greek-English) because this is a source of knowledge and wisdom. Our basic knowledge of everything came from these first three books of the Holy Bible. I am a Christian, a child of God, baptized into Christ on October 1, 1989 and I belong to the Church of Christ founded and headed by Christ as shown in Acts Chapter 2. I am given the gift of knowledge and understanding Bible Greek and I translate the Word of God from Greek to English PLAINLY - Greek word into its English equivalent with additional words for grammar purposes written in italics so that readers may delete them as the wish. I have already published GENESIS, EXODUS, LEVITICUS (Greek-English), THE WILL New Testament (Greek to English), ELEMENTS of SALVATION, The Right Way, GOD, ORIGIN, TRANSFER into PERFECTION, GREEK-ENGLISH (Grammar & Vocabulary), WORDS in THE WILL New Testament, and others shown at http://www.lulu.com/arseniajoaquin I have seen the versions being circulated worldwide and they are generally admitted to be 80% NOT translations. My translations are 99.99% translations and I see the truth, beauty, and sweetness of the Word of God. I hope these books could also help people understand the Word of God and be saved. May God bless you. [arseniajoaquin]
I agree with you catnun. The Bible is one of the best thing we can read but not at the age of 11 and when we just start reading books.Of course They are some more simple children books that explain the Bible with more simple ways but I prefer at this age the child choose him own books.... [aidonia]
Yes it is very important for children to read. There is so much knowledge to be found in just a story. I think with boys they are older when they decide it is time to read something other than school books. I always encouraged my son to read too, but he did not even want to until he was 12 or 13. Today he is 19 and a writer, actor, singer, dancer. He got all these great ideas from reading and now I am proud of him for choosing to read and write. Good for you and your son. [wmg2006]
I wish the best for you son and he always make you proud. [aidonia]
If you can get your children interested in books from an early age, you'll never have to worry about their education. If they love books they will educate themselves to a much higher degree than any school system could accomplish. You could try to see what interests them the most and try to add new things as needed to keep them interested. I used to read to my kids, and now they are grown, they all have book cases in their houses. Good luck. [KarenO52]
That's my point.for they have good education need love reading books. [aidonia]
It is very good for kids to read. When I was small, I was reading under cover with my flash light, because my mother didn't want me to read at night. She was smart, I was a rebel. Now we both are laughing about it. [polachicago]
Funny...your mother had the opposite problem than mine. [aidonia]
my son is 6 and he is reading books like Dr.Suess.because i read to him plus he is learning words in school.and he is making his own book from what the teacher gave him for his homework assignment.and he goes to the library to pick a book to take home every week in school.he loves to read. [coco526]
You are lucky. [aidonia]
Well you can't expect him to like what you like to do just because your his biological father. I mean father and son can be very different. I mean I believe reading is important now and into the future. I don't know what you can do but I'll I know is that it is important. [koikoikoi]
I'm him mother, but him father also like reading. [aidonia]
My mom read to me when I was small and when I was about 4 yrs old I began to read for myself. I believe reading at an early age helped me to be a bit more ahead in school and such. Almost a nerd, yes a little bit smart. I was in G.A.T.E. progam from 2nd through 7th grade. Which was good. I was reading ALL the time. I love to read still. I know some people dont like to do this. But I do. I'm back to working at a bookstore again as of a week from tomorrow. Excuss me I will be in heaven again living among books hurray!:)) [monkeywriter]
I just read at your topic for your new job.Congratulation. [aidonia]
When my son was still inside of me I would pick children's books out and read them aloud. I believe that a child in the womb can hear what is being said. Also when he was born I would sit him on my lap and read to him. I don't think it is ever to young to introduce children to books. By reading to them you are giving them the love of books. Make reading fun and a child will willingly pick up a book. If they think they are being punished then they will fight you every step of the way. You did a excellent thing by forgetting about pushing the idea of book reading on him. When he did decide to start reading he would think it was his own idea and that in a kids world is cool. [sunshinelady]
As I saw if you push a child you did the things worse. [aidonia]
I love reading books as well and I really find it important for children to read books. Books are our key to additional knowledge..It helps make our mind more active and open to ideas. [p3halliwel2005]
I agree with you. [aidonia]
That is soo great! And im really happy he loves to read..so many kids now adays especially that age want to play on the computer or playstation..or Xbox..whatever they have now lol..and its true the more you push kids the more the run away from what we want for them..so im glad he is doing it on his own..and what a wonderful world he has discovered!! Has he got into any of the harry Potters yet? My son is 4 yrs old..and he has been reading since he was 3..I have read to him since he was in my tummy..though back then it was parenting magazines and baby books lol..but hes reading a first grade level right now..and i couldnt be prouder,,i hope it stays..so many worlds to discover..and its great for there imagination.. [cloud_kicker_32]
No he doesn't start reading harry Potter yet.I wanted buy for him the last summer but he didn't want it (seems very big to him eye) but before few days he asked from me to buy .I'll do at Easter holidays. [aidonia]
yes i do think its good to start a kid reading at a young age. books teach them things which is good. i have never been big on reading even as an adult. i dont think its good to force them to read just let him do it on there own and he will probably continue reading. [txwoman36]
I hope you continue too. [aidonia]
Reading, I feel, is very important, it not only imparts knowledge and wisdom but also helps in growth and elocution. As for children, I feel reading helps in smart thinking and smarter conversation. I have two nieces from two sisters. Diya (10), the elder one is a voracious reader and would read anything and everything on earth. She would start reading adverts, billboards when she runs out of books. My sister has to supply the demand all the time and guess what, Diya only wants story books as gifts. My other niece, Anoska (5), was just the opposite, she would just not read and as you have pointed out, it seemed compulsion for her. So, my sister now buys all comics and ladybirds series books full of colors and pictures and keeps them inside the closet without mentioning about it. Anouska would just grasp the books and would start flipping through the pages. Before realizing, she now has become an ardent reader aswell!! I just hope your son continues with this, just stop pushing and he would push you for books. Good luck. [mimpi1911]
...i bet have dear. [mimpi1911]
Well, is important read...... I'm was a child read more.I'm like read, now is a difficult for me read and I miss a Book........BYE good new week.... [miryam]
Have a nice week too.You can find little time to read now too. [aidonia]

The answer posted twice lol:Happened to most of us. [aidonia]
Too many kids today are parked in front of the tv. It's great that he's reading. Reading is mental exercise that we all could use more of. [JWREDBUD]
Yes the more kids care about tv ,pc,ps2..... [aidonia]
I surely believe it is good to start reading at a tender age.i too started like that and now am very used to it.i think you have trained that kid for the future and it is tremendous job. [rpebad]
That is a great sign, Children should learn to love reading books, It is The interest in in reading that they learn by themselves, books have a lot of stored knowledge that can be transfered to them as they read it. Congratulations, your child is will be a wise guy. [Perry2007]
Thanks for your kind words. [aidonia]
That's possible if really provide a good reading atmosphere to your son no wonder he'll be hook on reading. The best way to learn your son to read more books is to provide him many interesting subjects and very suitable for his needs. Me as a parent, i started already to invest many buying books for my 4 year old son since he is juat 1 yr old. [ricoswabepogi]
You did the best for your son. By the way I saw I'm your first response at mylot so welcome and good luck. [aidonia]
Never recommend anything for your child to read LOL He or she will never touch that book. Leave that book in YOUR shelf ,where your own special books are and dont mention it. He will wonder why it is special and maybe want to read it. My father had his special books. One was a big thick book called 'The yearling' he never mentioned it to me and I used to wonder what it was about, my Aunt bought me Vanity Fair and Pride and prejudice because she thought I would like them but they were so boring for an 11 year old to read, One day I said to dad,'what's that Yearling book about?' and he said it was about a little boy who has a deer for a pet and if I wanted I could read it . Ofcourse i wanted! I read it all through. If my Aunt had bought it, I would have thought,'another book for girls from my Aunty' and I would have left it on the shelf. [mihimolly]
I loved the story you shared with us about you and your father's books. Also you gave to me good advice.Thanks. [aidonia]
books are very important and they can give us many things no matter how old are we...of course reading books for a child is very useful because it is the way we learn our language better for example..it helps widen our vocabulary, for example...moreover books widen our spirit and mind...sometimes you find what you like reading about it and after reading a book you want to know more about a subject...surely it helps when studying...therefore I am very happy your child is starting this marvellous adventure..we can suggest people they should read, we can give good advice but people start reading only when they decide it ...it is a very personal fact.. [maribea]
I agree, each one person must start love reading by himself. [aidonia]
That's very good that your son has started reading books! So this started about 4 months ago? Well, hopefully it will continue. Yes, I think it is important for children to start to love reading from a small age because reading is involved in so many different things that we do, and not to mention, it increases a person's vocabulary, and it will make school work and other things easier for the child. My paren'ts read to me ever since I was a tiny baby, and now I LOVE reading! [dopey22girl]
I also believe reading helps at the school work too. [aidonia]
Yes childreen should love reading, to have a very big knowlege for all there life. [sevenat]
Yes should love but sometimes they didn't [aidonia]
I think reading is a very good habit or a hobby for a person, especially for a child, because he can learn much more than one that cannot read [max_well]
reading should come from onself.. it should not come by forcing.. so age is not important for reading.. it can be started at any age but should come by one s own interest then only it will b stable one... [kavi112]
i glad to hear that when i have son i will teach my son to enjoy read [edogembul]
Thanks to all of you. [aidonia]
I love to read aswell. I also red to my childeren every day. I didn't expect it but they both dont like to read. I even have to go to a special teacher with my daughter for reading. She finds it terrible hard to learn it. I hope she will learn quick and that she enjoys reading books as I do. It's so very important for them. It can help them all there lifes. [Raissa1967]
You are doing the right thing in seeking help for your daughter if she is having difficulty. Some people have a condition called dyslexia and if it's caught early, they will have a lot easier to train their brain to read and write correctly. Hugs to you and your daughters. Best wishes that the teacher will be able to help and your daughters will learn to enjoy reading. [simplysue]
Yes! I think reading and a love for books is the most important skill a child can develop. I don't have children, but I am scared when I do that they will not want to read. I love to read and I credit it for my success. I went to law school and believe me, if you hate to read, it isn't the place for you. I have seen my friends try to "force" their children to love to read. I think you just have to be a good example to them and keep books around and let them see you reading. Regular trips to the library or bookstore will help, too. Good luck and I hope your son continues to love books for the rest of his life. [fallie]
My husband you use to say same.He finish the law school also. [aidonia]
Yaa obviously ma'am young children should start reading books from a lower age. I am 19 yers old and i regret that i didn't start reading from a young age, that has affected me a lot. My vocabulary isn't good, my reading speed is round about 250 words/min which is supposed to be of a 12 year old child, also I'm not able to speak english fluently just because I don't get words I wan't to speak ,during a conversation. It's not late and to some extent I've started reading. I used to hate it when my tution teacher used to tell me to read newspapers daily, so it's good that your son has started reading on his own and see to it that he enjoys it and makes full use of it, even I'm on the same track ! All the best ma'am for you and your son. [mavrone_yefriend]
Thanks for your wishes and don't forget never is too late ... [aidonia]
well i do agree that reading is a gud hooby but pushing ur kid into that i will neither prefer nor apprectiate,,,,they have to study alot and i dont want them to just stick with a book and keep reading like a log there is far better ways of learning knwldge and things by practical means yes books does help but i wont be in favour of makin my kid a bookworm,,,,as i wont him to be human first rather than just a worm. [mywords18]
Hi Friend Congratulations on that, I think I know how you feel. Parents always love it when the kids enjoy the same things they enjoy themselves. It is important that kids read and I am not talking about comic books but real books. My Mom has passed that on to me this love for real books. As soon as I learned to read I got access to a library bus and guess what, every Friday I came home with the 5 books allowed for kids for the week and by Saturday morning I had already read one of them. My mom also made sure that I really read them and sneaked in, took the book to have an overview what it was about and then asked me to tell her what I had read. I never failed telling her. Reading still is my fav pastime and as I commute a huge chunk of time to work and back again theres enough time to do that now. [book1962]
A kiss to your Mom. [aidonia]
It is really important for creating interest as there are picture, colors and stories. Once you an habit, you will read more meaningful stuff. It also enhances imagination, ethics, vocabulary, reading, writing and learning skills. Boosts your mental capactiy. Congratulations! [raheel07]
I think it is important that children enjoy reading. my sons are 18 months so far too young to start redaing. however, we read them a bedtime story each night and we also let them play with books. they like turning the pages and looking at the pictures. I do not want to pust them to read as I think they may not enjoy it, but I want to show them the joy of being able to read. [racheldarcy]
You are right ,the pushing is not the answer [aidonia]
I think reading is so important for children and I used to love reading as a kid. I would always read a book to make me chill before bedtime. I used to read to my son when he was small. I loved putting him to sleep with a good story. I usd to read him greek ones too. I am so happy with your son reading..Bravo lol. [yanjiaren]
I hope you see and read to your son soon. [aidonia]
Aidonia, Full marks to you for starting a very good discussion and full marks also to inculcate reading habit in your son. I entirely agree with your views about reading. Reading is the best hobby we should inculcate in our children. You did absoultely right thing, you motivated your son to read and understand. If we advice our children to start reading an an early age, it is very good for them. Once they develop the habit of reading, it will continue and this habit will be very much beneficial for them in the long run. I also encourage my children to read story books, magzines etc. I ask them to read Newspapers. I advice them to only read those portion of Newspaper which interest them. Like children Section, story section, sports section or even film Section. I feel even if they read about movies, they will gain some knowledge about the language, which will help them in long run. All in all a very good step by you and we all should follow it. [dpk262006]
Thank you.You are kind like always. [aidonia]
Well i don't really like reading a book.:) i rather watching a movie or playing a game.:) If i read a book usually i read engineering book or comic book which there are so many pictures on it. It's really hard for to read about science and engineering without any picture on it.:) and really like comic book big sis.:) [H2hydrogenz]
Now you must study but at your summer holday find little time to read a book....your big sis talking here!! [aidonia]
I do believe that reading is very important for children- My daughter is 10 and I see the same things you describe in your son. I read all the time-- Its important for our kids to see us read-- that makes them see reading is great! I lucked out with my daughter recently-- see really got into American Girl books so I bought 4 series of them- She whipped right through them-- This is what it took-- Now we go to the bookstore and she picks out books (chapter) and loves to read. So keep with it-- Dont pressure him-- Just read alot- tell him it is so much fun to read- When you read you go to far away places. [KrisNY]
I think it's very important that we read to our little ones! I know that this helps them to read and it also is a nice, calm part of the day where my lil man is snuggling in my lap instead of tearing around the house like a tornado. LOL My eldest would sit and listen to stories for hours (he is the calm, easygoing one) My lil man will sit only for one or two stories but it's better than not at all. My eldest loves books as much as I do but the lil one we will have to wait and see....maybe he will love books more when he is older. [simplysue]
Jacob is too small.Wait some years and you will see.You are lucky to have one easygoing and one tornado. [aidonia]
I believe all children should read at an early age. Reading is everywhere around you, and you can learn so much from it. My daughter first started reading street and road signs. And Blues Clues helped a lot. We spent lots of time, and she was reading entering kindergarten. It's wonderful, and wonderful to bond that way. [bestisyettocome]
The difficult is they learn read books from the first years of school. [aidonia]
Hello Aidonia, congratulations! I started reading books before I joined kindergarten. I read fables, biographies, illustrated Bibles, myths and all, but not comics and usually thin books and long-story ones. I was known as a little avid reader among my dad's friends. At schools apart from the classroom, the libraries were the place where I spent most of my times. So, if you see my picture here, it is me wearing my -800 contact lenses, LOL! I learnt to love books from my dad. He himself loved to read and I guess I was encouraged by his interest towards books. Almost every week we went to the bookstore and he let me choose what I wanted to read, while supervising here and there. That is why I think it is important for parents to love reading books in order to get their children involved. About your son, I read from a counselor in parenting that boys usually are not avid readers compare to girls, it's more delicate to pick a book for a boy. They need something not too long or too short, full of adventure which fits their nature, an aura of competition would do great, they love reading boy stuff. You may know a lot better in this area...=) And just like some comments here, I think it's very important to help them picking up good books. It will shape their preference long when they're growing up. I also get advantages from my love in reading books while I learnt English. I picked English books that had interesting topics for me. Just in case you haven't thought of this, maybe if you know something your son loves which he can get to understand more through books, it'll help enhancing his eagerness to read, rather than only telling him to read because you think it's good....=) [Avichail]
I'm glad to read how patient you are in introducing him to the wonderful world of reading, I appreciate it and hope I could be like you too with my kids one day...=) I don't like reading English books at first either although I like reading a lot. I kept getting red marks for English during my junior high school, hahaha... But one day on my first trip abroad without my Dad who usually be my sole translator, I was faced with the inevitable choice to learn English or be in trouble. So, I started using my reading hobby as means to equip me to learn English. I can't never thank God enough for giving me the desire to read like that, I've been helped many times because of my reading habit...=) [Avichail]
Yes,you are right Childeren must start reading from the very begging age other wise when he/she will start writting it there will be lots of problems for him such as in GRAMMAR and use of HE/SHE and like that. So it is better to teach reading books to the kids from very young age,Its better. And Also i have read some where Famouse people were always those who asked Questions and read lots of lots of Books, not text(School Books),So i will suggest my Kids(if there will be any) so choose the Book as a friend too. THanks for the Discussion Gohar [goharayub]
Hhahahahahah,Yes you are right i Found it and i meet it today for the first in my life too(i didnt seen her yet at all),she was very shy and was running from me today and i really liked her for that,I love her even more from today. thanks my very Good friend you are just like my sister Now. Thanks Sister... [goharayub]
ya,congratulations!!aidonia! I think you son is just on the way to get more knowledge. It is a necessary porcess for a kid to grow up. I think, now kids are more clever than 20 years ago. I still remember that I began to read a real book when I was 13 year old. before that, I just read the textbook and did the homework teachers arranged for us. In the internet era, maybe reading a book would be replaced by surfing online. maybe your son would like to get more information when he grows a little older. But I think It is still necessary to read books, sometimes it is better to get some knowledge from book than from internet. you know, internet is just like the fast food. we need fast food, but we still need dinner. have a great day!! [maximus2006]
LOL:)I loved the part with fast food and the dinner..... [aidonia]
I just rated you another + for a great posting. You are doing a wonderful job here, and with your son's future. It is very important to start teaching them to read at a young age, so that they enjoy it. Now would be a good time to teach him English too. It is easier when they are young. You are an intelligent and great mom. I commend you sugar. [margieanneart]
Thanks for your kind words. My son start learn English before even start the school.I went for learn English language from the age of 4.He loves English. [aidonia]
