responses and comments:

I like those two, and Wm. Blake, and ee cummings. Edgar Allan Poe had some catchy stuff as well. I think I need to get out some of my poetry books and indulge. I have some huge text books of literature as well. Thanks for posting this discussion, it is a good reminder to do more with our minds. [GardenGerty]
The Raven, my favourite poem of all time :) [Raevyn1972]

My favourites are Edgar Allen Poe, W.H. Auden, Shakespeare, and Alfred Lord Tennyson. [Raevyn1972]
yes, all good ones as well. (though I'm not familiar with W.H. Auden) [wmaharper]

It's true that most of us like/love the classic writers of poetry. But what about contemporary writers. I personally like Saul Williams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/saul_williams). He took a form of performance poetry and elevated it to high art. It's all in his words and metaphors. Even though they sound good read aloud by him, I think most people miss something unless they read it themselves and see the structure on paper...or screen. And for some reason, I could quote Raven verbatim. Don't know how or why... [silenciobarnes]
I will have to check out his work. Thanks for the link.. [wmaharper]

It means what should I do with your symapthies what should I do? he rejects people's sympathies in this poem and accepts the fact tht we have come alone in this world and will depart alone too. [mansha]
I haven't heard much of his, I'll have to google him and read some. Thanks. [wmaharper]

So far the only poet i really liked was Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Famous for many of his works but mainly known for Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan. I also liked Shelley and Byron. [lostpoet]
YEs, Shelley and Byron are good as well. I enjoy most of thier stuff.. [wmaharper]

Roald Dahl and Allan Ahlberg. Honestly. I like stories, I like humour, I like rhymes. I'm more likely to sit and read the Please Mrs Butler collection than I am to take up some Ted Hughes. Although, I'm a fan of Donne's 'death be not proud'. And Christina Rosetti has a few interesting pieces. but mostly I think poetry is a great tool for comedy and light hearted fun :) [Fexbox]
yes, it sure can be. thanks for your response.. [wmaharper]

Does anyone remember a short story, I think of it occasionally but can't remember the title. The author of the story is Russian, I am not sure if it was Puskin? But in the story, a soldier comes home from the war and he gets involve with a woman, they marry(I think) but he can't make love to her. Anybody know the name of that story? [Corrine11]

Having a degree in English, I'm going to have to join the bunch who like the classic poets. My favorites include Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson, Shakespeare, and Lord Byron. I have a good friend who writes some great poetry, but she hasn't done much in the way of getting it published so no one here will know of her. [DreamOn01]

I have always loved Robert Frost, partially because I grew up very close to the home that he and his family lived in from I believe 1900-1911 or so. It is now the "Robert Frost Farm", and it is still furnished the way it was when he lived there. He wrote most of his books while living there. [Sarah1977]
