For a while I have been thinking of buying a copy of The Pirate's Daughter and noticed it in a second hand book shop that is currently having a half price sale. So I bought it and think that I will really enjoy reading it.
Do you ever buy second hand books? If so where?

Iv only ever bought 3 books in my life. But I bought one last month and it was Ross Kemp - Gangs and I have really got into it. I think I am definately going to start reading more books so I might take a look at second hand books. [mwhitby1985]
hi maximax..i too like reading books..i buy second hand books all the time..mostly sydney sheldon books..or else me and my friends share the books already we have..the only book i bought in the book shop as a fresh piece is 'murder in mesapatomia' by Agatha christie..happy myloting [varoonashok]
All the time. There is a thrift store up the road that sells second hand books, there are book sales at our public library and my son's school has a book fair once a year too. I have also swapped books online for free :) [maddysmommy]
I know that books are quite expensive to buy. I buy sometimes a lot of book, but prefer to buy pockets. I have problem buying them second hand. Donīt know why,but I have never liked to read books that someone before me have been reading. [Mickey_Mouse1]
I always buy second hand books. I think that books are so expensive, that I feel ripped off on the few occasions I do buy them new. I also read books that my friends and family have finished with - when I visit my family at Christmas, I am quite anti-social at times, desperately trying to finish a good book before I go home! As I live in Spain, it is sometimes hard to get books in English, but little by little more shops do English books, and there are a few charity shops who stock them too. I like charity shops, you can buy the books very, very cheaply and then feel good about giving them back in a week or two. Much cheaper than buying them new! [sandra966]
I rarely buy new; it's just too costly for most things. And I know what you mean -- I read AT parties, & I'd rather read than almost anything else. Someone here actually said it bothers them to read something knowing someone else had already had it. Not I! To me, a book is even more interesting for being used. I often wonder how the original reader saw it, how THEY understood it. I even find scribbling in the margins okay, so long as it isn't TOO distracting or covers up the text or any pictures. It's revealing, & thought-engendering, & it gives the book a comfy feel, like a sort of "handshake" to a book-loving "pal" across time & space! Anyway, since I'm a book junkie with a major habit to support, second hand is the way to GO! LOL! Maggiepie [Maggiepie]
Hi maxi!! I too am interested in books, i mostly i buy second hand books for the course covered in college but novels and others i prefer e-books as they can be brought free of cost and are ease to use.. I prefer you too to read through e-books as they will also decrease your expenses. [mindhunterpk]
I bought secondhand books. We have a used/new bookstore in our downtown and I used to go there with my Brother (who's a book lover/collector) and we just go around the aisles and find books we might enjoy. We buy those that look almost new though. I think the last secondhand book I bought was The Phantom Tollbooth. When I was still in school. I try to buy used books because they were way cheaper than new ones. But you know how schoolbooks are. They always come out with a new edition like every year and it's more expensive even if they only changed a few paragraphs or so. [SaintAnne]
Hi Maximax, I love reading books, and I opt to buy second hand books, as new books are so expensive. We have a major secondhand bookstore over here, that holds their sales almost every month. We often attend them, and browse through the offerings. And there are so many books to choose from - I bought books at each sale, though I have lots more at home, that are still not read! [lazeebee]
Frankly, I mind second hand books. If it's possible, I prefer to buy brand new books rather than second hand ones. But if I can't find the book and the second hand book isn't very old and dirty, then probably I will consider to buy it anyway. I love China [youless]
I have been buying second-hand books for years, especially since some of the books I am looking for are out of print. I do a lot of reading, so there's no way I'd be able to buy all of them new. I have two local used bookstores I visit regularly, and I occasionally go to library book sales too. I also buy used books online through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. [DreamOn01]
I used to buy a lot of second hand books from the local charity shops to support them and when it came to the choice of buying a brand new book from smiths who charge a fortune for their books and supporting a charity that were selling books for 50p each, it's a hell of a difference, especially if you are only going to read them once. What I used to do is buy them and read them then give them back to the charity shop so they would win twice, or I would pass them on to an elderly neighbour to read. [wolfie34]
I love second hand books. I actually belong to a book swap club online and get most of my books from there (free) and there is also a used bookstore in town that i go to once in awhile. If you want the link to the online club to check out let me know and i will send it to you. Happy reading! [cjgrooms]
Oh I love buying second had books and I'll buy them wherever I find them, markets, charity shops, Amazon. I do buy new books if I can't get the one I want second hand but I'd rather save money if I can. [aslanlight]
I love reading and I like to save money, so I'm always buying second-hand and remaindered books. I practically live in the local charity shops. [Citizen_Stuart]
I purchase almost any of the books I do read as used books. I see no reason for buying new and paying such a rich price when I can get the book used for half or les of the original price. I will buy on Amazon or Ebay most of the time but our town does have a giant used book store and it is well worth the look see before buying new. [eeyore39]
I buy a lot of books from charity shops. I read a lot and only buy new books if I'm sure I will read them more than once. They are usually very cheap so I just give them back to the charity shop to re-sell. [nannacroc]
As an avid reader buying new books can be very expensive. I buy a lot of my books from charity shops, they are very cheap and once I've read them I take them back so they can be re-sold. [nannacroc]
Sorry I answered twice I didn't think the first one had been posted. [nannacroc]
All the time. Our library has 3 book sales a year. One is coming up in October. Garage sales sometimes. [thelastwolf113]
Well, I always - almost always prefer those second hand books. Its not that I can't go for first hand, but its always better to have two books instead of one. Isn't it? After all, the thing matters is the legibility of letters. If that is satisfied, I am definitely going for them. In some cases, like when they are to be gifted, ofcourse, I would prefer first hand! Well, its such weird - we don't buy ourselves first hand and we do it for others! lol! Happy Mylotting! [Amagnimo]
Funny, but I can think of at least two occasions for which I preferred used to new--both were first editions, with provenance in one case of a former owner, which were rare & therefore, besides having sentimental value, worth more monetarily if they ever decided to resell. Just my tuppence. Maggiepie [Maggiepie]
I love 2nd hand anything and books in particular. I usually get them from the goodwill (hardback $1.25, paperback $.75) I have even scored some autographed books and some very rare treasures (Oz Mandingo). There is also Ebay and Amazon.com that will give you a description of any wear and tear on the books. I just purchased 16 books from the goodwill bargin bin for a total of $4.00 (prices in the bin start at a $.25) Happy Hunting! [tmunden]
Never,i like always new books, because they give us new feelings and uptodate information. [dasineni]
I get books at the half price stores, Goodwill, garage sales and any other place I find an interesting book. I do by new books, because I've gotten into series that I can't wait for the next book and it hasn't been published! [ElicBxn]
I love second hand books. We have a second hand book shop in my town run by a woman named Edna. Edna loves books and loves to read. I show up every few months and buy a bunch of books. If it's a planned trip, I bring my shopping cart so I can take a lot of books. After I read them, I pass them on to friends. Actually some get loaned out even before I read them. I almost always run into friends in the 4 block walk to the bus and I give them a few books. They'll make it back to me eventually, so I don't care. For $2 I don't care if the book makes the rounds of English readers before I get it. The lady that runs the used book store also has a chest of free books, that are a little to worn out to sell. I always go through that and take any that may look good. Some have been awesome. I got one for free, "And Ladies of the Club" that was absolutely spectacular. It obviously had been read many times and was worth the read. [TheCatLady]
All the time! A book needn't be new for ME to enjoy it! I once found a book that had somehow gotten lost under a house, & when the house was torn down, there it was. II picked it up, dusted it off, & read it. It was a great book about architecture in the Holy Land! As for where I USUALLY find 2nd-hand books, oh, just everywhere! Garage/yard sales, little book nooks, out of the way, which cater to esoteric tastes, Half Price Books, regular NEW book stores often have a used bin, library sales (when they have too many copies, & a lack of shelf space, you can pick up delicious bargains!), & even, now & then, online. Amazon.com has great amounts of like-new books, & for that matter, CDs, tapes (including books ON tape) & other neat stuff. Have fun searching! Maggiepie [Maggiepie]
yes To bought 2nd hand book is a good idia to save the money, if your purpose is solved with the same material else go for new. Regards Viral [vikibhatt]
I love reading. I read almost a book a day. I love second hand books. They save me a fortune and if I really like the book I feel OK buying it in hard cover. I once had a person say to me that she would not get a second hand book because you don't know who has handled it. My response was any time someone wanted to give me a dirty old Gutenberg Bible I would be very glad to except it. [patms1]
I buy more second hand books than new books, because it's so much cheaper, and a lot of the time, you can still pick up books that are in good condition. I usually buy them from either ebay, or second hand book stores. Occassionally I'll see a good bargain at one of the local markets as well, though not as often. [kriszelunka]
I buy second hand books all the time. I save a lot of money this way and the best part is that even if the book is not exactly a keeper I don't feel too bad :) There is a nice little second hand bookstore very close to my home and i go there often . [arkaf61]
Mainly Ebay or car boot sales if I see something I like - I don't like them to be too worn though as books I buy new I like to keep in real good condition and therefore won't buy them if they look too grotty! x [frankiecesca]
Yes, though I have a pretty flexible attitude as to whether I buy new or second-hand. Sometimes I have got second-hand books on Amazon and have not ever been let down on the reported conditions of these second-hand books. There is a bookshop in Glastonbury (new-age capital of England) called "Speaking Tree" that does a good range of new books at reduced prices, that I don't seem to buy so many second-hand books. Glastonbury also has some lovely second-hand bookshops. It's just that I don't seem to read so much these days, preferring to spend the time on the internet at sites such as myLot.com!!! [dreamhealer]
Oh~~I love to read. Like I love reading the books of Sydney Sheldon, Heather Graham, Dan Brown and John Grisham, but sadly I can't sometimes include them in my budget. So second hand books are really what I need. Although I hesitate most of the time because I love collecting them, but we today's commodity prices, I won't have any second thoughts buying second hand books. lol. Have a great day! [maigzen]
Yes I do buy second hand books. I bought some about shetland sheepdogs from Ebay and were in excellent condition almost like new. They were half the price of a new book. Thus I saved some bucks. There are also local shops in Malta which sell second hand books. I bought Stephen Kings collection at a bargain price. [ronaldinu]
I love buying second hand books because then I don't have to pay so much for them. I've bought books like that from different places. I've bought some at book stores that buy, sale, and trade books. I've bought some on ebay. I've bought some from the flea market. And also I love it when people just give books to me that they have already read because I love to read and I read really fast so I go through books real fast. [sweetgirl_k1]
We have a place called the Corner Book Store. It's a book store on a corner, so it's appropriately named. Anyway, it is all second hand books. I like to go there for craft books. Esp. crafts that people don't seem to do anymore. [writersedge]
I do buy second hand books especially from Ebay at a bargain price. Most of them are in brand new condition or shop soiled. So it is almost as new that you wont notice the difference. [ronaldinu]
I buy second hand books all the time. I love to visit used and rare bookstore where ever I go. I could spend hours and hours in a used book store. [makingpots]
I only buy my books from second hand book stores or from garage sales or church sales. I won't pay full price for a book. I think they charge way too much for them, but that is just my opinion. I guess if I was an author or book publisher I wouldn't like some one like me, but oh well. I go to the second hand book store for my books and usually find them for around $2.00 a piece. They also have a deal there that when you bring in three books you can take one of theirs for free. So every once in a while I have a few I can take to them and then I don't have to pay for one. Neat huh! Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend, Have a good mylotting day, Chris [chrislotz]
Yes! I haven't bought a brand new book since I was in high school with no bills and money to blow. I get most of my books as they are passed down to me from my family members or friends. I get a bunch at yard sales too. I find they are the cheapest at yard sales. I visit my parents in Tennessee every spring and the yard sales there are amazing. I always stock up when I am there. I also like getting books rom thrift stores. I live in a pretty small area so there aren't too many good choices at the thrift stores here. But, whenever I am in another area I make sure to check the thrift stores for some books. [emma412]
