What Books Did You Love Reading As A Child

Well then what books did you love reading when you were a child? Well I'm quite boring as it was anything by Enid Blyton... the school tales Famous Five Sercet Seven, Mr Pinkwhistle, Mr Meddle and so forth, anyone else think of any other Enid Blyton titles. From the age of about thirteen I read most of the Catherine Cookson books. I am very keen to come back and see what everyone else read when a child, espically people who don't live in England, be nice to read what top authors other countries have, ie we have Enid Blyton, so what are other countries equal authors to her etc. Happy Reading Anne18

Well, I never enjoyed reading that much. I guess I just read the books when i was at school to actually receive grades on the test. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother reading then. When I was a bit older, when I was trying to join college, we in Brazil have to apply for a kind of test, which cover literature. I had to read all those books they determinate and I kind of sucked on this part of the test. So my experience with reading isn't good at all. Oh, by the way, there is something I actually enjoy reading.. mangas. [loganirado]

As a toddler it was all about Dr. Seuss. Which I think ever toddler should have a set of them. Then as I got older it turned into The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries. [Chey1970]
I agree! My kids have a TON of Dr. Seuss books. Horton Hears a Who is my ALL TIME FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!! I have a couple of the large sized (8" x 14" or so hardcover) Dr. Seuss books for my OWN collection (Horton Hears a Who, Horton Hatches the Egg, Oh The Places You Will Go). I try telling my husband that I want more of those books every year & he never buys them for me... I'll have to buy them myself but I'm not allowed to buy anymore books *personal rule* until I read ALLLLLL the books on my bookshelves but that's taking FOREVER since people keep giving me more & more books LOL [fran429]

Hi Anne, I also was a massive Enid Blyton fan, particularly of the 'Mystery of Books' which I saved and passed down for my son to enjoy. Also the Malory Towers books. I wss crazy for history books and had to sneak into the adult part of the library early on for those, along with the St Trinian's books. My son has turned out to be a book addict too and will read in either English or Greek for pleasure.happy [thea09]

I read the Little House books. I really didn't read too many of the books meant for children. I was more into reading Dickens, O Henry and the like, even at a young age. One of my favorite books was one called Baby Island by Carol Ryrie Brink which is amazingly still in print. [irishidid]

I read a lot of Enid Blyton too. My favourites were the Enchanted Wood/Magic Faraway Tree books. My daughter is 4 and I have bought her copies of these books for Christmas - she already has the animated DVDs of them! Other books I remember reading a lot were the My Naughty Little Sister books, though I can't remember who wrote those. My mother said she bought them because the little girl on the cover pictures reminded her of me... [caragh2608]

My absolute favourite books when I was a child were the Famous Five series by Enid Blyton and for me, Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame was just sheer magic. [Nestonlady]

I loved the books by Astrid Lindgren she comes from Sweden and has written beautiful childrens books and my mom made sure I had the best ones. [book1962]

When i was small i liked to read books of fantasy or an encyclopedia. [sridharsahu]

I honestly never heard any of the books you just listed, but its gotten me intrigued. well as a little kid my parents read me lots of poems and stories in polish. (my family's from there). I also was told traditional fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood. As a kid I started reading classical books that were simplified for kids. I really enjoyed Robinson Crusoe. I liked adventure and survival books. I really liked Holes. and it was my favorite book for a while. I never was a huge harry potter fan. i think i only ever read like the first 2 books. then I got bored with them. I should probably go back to them and actually read them. [wigima5]

Chronicles or Narnia,Secret of Nimh,Dr, Suess,Lord of the Rings,he Hobbit,Bunnicula, then I read Star Trek an Star Wars novels. Also in my English an Literature books at school I would read all the stories or books before they were assigned. Same with my history book I would read the whole thing, often by the end of year, I will have finished the book, but the class would not finish it. [solared]

I loved science fantasy when I was a child. [yecal10]
Hi yecal: seriously? I thought i was the only one, i read them on my school library while the others were playing. I else love to read Stephen King when i was a 10-12 years old and i'm still a fan of his books. [starsailover]

Way back I love reading fairy tales and Aesop. I am fond of reading thoughtful stories. I can really say that reading those wonderful stories helped me become a better person today. shadow41 [shadow41]

I had the Hardy Boys mystery novels! For some reason, I loved Frank and Joe's detective work. And how their best friend Chet would screw up their work and get them in trouble. I remember having a lot of these books and starting a collection, because I had the hard bound ones. Now, the only title I could remember is 'The Mystery of the Crooked Nose'. [bounce58]

Yes but not much. But I almost always hated being assigned to read something. ... I remember there being stories that I found unbelievably boring when the teacher said to read them. But any other week I would have considered them fun.My teachers used to force read us and expected us to read 3 to 6 novels a month back in primary and highschool. It was hard to admire reading with that type of force lol. [getconnected]

i used to read the secret of the gnomes series and they were all nice, i still love to read them, those adventures were definetly nice. Gnomes were really funny [IMG]http://www.mylot.com/w/image/2261771.aspxice[/IMG] [starsailover]

I loved reading the books of Tintin. Tintin is a marvellous character. I have read the books of Tinitn, many of them again and again and I have been overwhelmed by the wonderful stories. I guess none else could produce such marvellous stories. Tintin is unique and incomparable, good not only for children, but also for adults who are innocent like children. [Frederick42]

I loved hardy boys and nancy drew books...in fact I used equest our librari in school to give me only these books. we werent allowed to go into the section where books were kept, apparently we were too young to maintain the discipline there hi hi [malpoa]

I can hardly remember me reading books during my childhood years. If there was, it was mostly books that we use from school. Though there were books on fairy tales that I have read but most of them were with pictures. One thing I do remember however were the Hardy Boys books that I have read later on in my childhood years. I have read each of them from the first published up to the last. If I am not mistaken, the first one was "The Tower Treasure" well something about treasure and tower. It really fascinated me that I would borrow 2-3 books during weekend and read them when I have no classes. [jpso138]

Dr. Seuss and the Grim Fairy tales were always my favorite. [rogue13xmen13]

when I was a kid I liked reading lots of books.I like to read Agatha Christie,Sydney Sheldon, mills and boon,Nancy drew, hardy boys.I use to pick from library or borrowed it from my friends.Sometimes I bought them from the bookshop and then sell it second hand.As once I read the book I dint like to re read it again in future. [bluray]

Hello Anne, this is quite funny as now that I think about it, I remember reading some really funny books! I don't know if you remember or have heard of them but, Billy Blue Hat? Roger Red Hat? Do you remember those books? What about the Mr Men books? Ok, I'm really returning to a very young age when I read these books, it's funny that I still remember them. I think that over the years your reading improves and you tend to go for more challenging books, I certainly do. I love melodramas and true life stories. Anyway, I think they still have those books somewhere, the ones I mentioned above! Andrew [AndrewFreyne]
OH MY GOSH! The Mr. Men books!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVED them! They were always so FUN! I bought some of those for my kids for Christmas last year & the year before... Mr. Messy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [fran429]

I live in New Zealand and when I was a kid I enjoyed Enid Blyton, Mr Meddle, The Narnia Series, Sweet Valley High, The Babysitters Club, RL Stine's Fear Street, nancy Drew, and the classics like Little Women etc. Not to mention all of Roald Dahls books! [l33tgirl]
I'm 27 so yes in your era. [l33tgirl]

I remember this one book that I read when I was about 10 or 11. The title was, "Are you there God?, It's me Margaret". But I have always loved reading V.C. Andrews, her books were my favorite. [Djbrat]
I used to read V.C. Andrews but that didn't happen until my young adult-ness... maybe age 20 or so? They were REALLY good! And reading them as a young adult *and even younger mother* I wouldn't allow my child to read them unless she was a mature 16... I know, I'm a shelter-er LOL [fran429]

hell Anne18, When I was a youngin, I loved reading Sweet Valley High & Sweet Valley Twins & The Babysitters Club. I was a youngin' in the 80's as I'm only 28. I moved to Massachusetts from South Carolina the summer before I entered 7th grade. those 3 book series I just mentioned were what I read up until 6th grade. I also used to read Stephen King back then also. When I moved up to Massachusetts, a friend of mine introduced me to R.L. Stine and I read almost every single book he had written. I also read other books here & there but those were the authors who wrote series that I just HAD to read the newest one of.... [fran429]

I read the book about the story of Malakas and Maganda a well known , Robinson Crusoe, Rip Van Winkle, Gulliver travel, Fairy tales books like the stories of the Frog Prince, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Hansel and Gretel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The ugly Duckling, the fable in the bible, Aesop fable and those Christian Andersen fairy tales. They were all great and it helps me to become a better person and be compassionate with other people including animals.. [neelianoscet]

I love grimm's fairtales, especially rumpelstilskin and rapunzel. I also love peterpan, and he was always my true hero hehe, even though he is not categorized into that hehehe [kafueenu]

i used to read all of Laura Ingels Wilder books (Little House on the Prairie) and from a young age (i guess around 11 or 12) i started reading biographies which sparked my love for history. [cher913]
I'm watching that on dvd, I keep getting hubby to order more and more off ebay to watch. I have never read the books are they good? I have been on loads of websites to do with Little House, I want to go and live there!!!!! [Anne18]

When i was a child, i loved to read the Disney stories. i also enjoyed the Little House on the Prairie books. Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Alice in Wonderland were also books I liked as a child. Books can take you anywhere you want to go. They are the best escape in the world! [sender621]

I also liked the Just William books by Richmal Crompton. [Nestonlady]

When I was a child I loved reading Amelia Bedilia books. They were such fun. Charlotte's Web was one of my favorites as well. And of course I was a Nancy Drew addict. Althought I didn't read The Hardy Boys, I looked forward when books would come out with a Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys crossover. And I also loved The Sweet Valley High series, which I hear is about to be made into a movie. It's a shame though. They'll probably make the movie dirty. [AmbiePam]

I used to read a lot of stuff, mostly fantasy books! The book that helped me start reading was Charlotte's Web by E.B.White! And then I started to read Harry Potter, Darren Shan, Unfortunate Events, His Dark Materials, Stephen King books, Artemis Fowl, Catherine Webb's Mirror Dreams (and the sequel)! Ahh, there's just so many I can't fill them all here! :D But I loved reading every one of them! It helped me learn English better, understand how human personality can be made (although it might not be the same in real-life, but there are similar traits that's relatable!) and I learned new words too! :D I think I read books as much as I watched movies! :D [lightwithin7]

What a great topic. Thank you! The two books that I re-read more often than any others when I was young were Charlotte's Web and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I highly recommend them! [dld999]

When I was a young girl I loved reading "Little Women". I also loved reading the Nancy Drew Detective Bookds. I would get a new on every year either on my birthday or Christmas. They were such good books I would hate it when the book ended. The books you mentioned I never heard of. I guess that is because I live in the States. Happy reading and Happy Mylotting! [lelin1123]

I liked reading the lion, the witch and the wardrobe, that was my favorite. My son was telling me one day about this book he was reading and I was surprised to find out that other books after the lion witch and the wardrobe came out and it was a series. When I was around 13 I started reading the VC Andrews series of flowers in the attic. For some reason now I can't climb into books like I used to and now I wish I could. [mzz663]

I was a fan of the 'Secret Seven' and the 'Famous five' etc. I also just loved th Little Women books. A few years ago when I was in New England I went to their home - somewhere near Concorde I think. This was amazing and I saw the drawings by Amy everywhere, She used to draw on the walls or anywhere ther was a flat surface. I also saw Meg's wedding dress and had a tour of the house. It was autobiographical and I actually re read the books again. It was a wonderful experience. I would read anything and still do. The Arthur Ransome books also thrilled me. Have read everything Catherine Cookson wrote too. She could really spin out a tale. I also was a fan of Charles Dickens and one wet summer read several of his books - unabridged - and I was only nine years old. He came from Portsmouth which was my home as a child. We read a lot as there wasn't any television but even when we got a television it still did not stop me from reading. If you have a couple of books then you are not lonely. [cynthiann]

I loved reading Judy Bloom and S.E. Hinton the best. I've also read their adult books now, but I think their kids stuff was better. [reinydawn]
