What Do You Do With Your Books After Youve Read Them

Do you have a library like my father. Or are you like me and donate them? Somewhere in between where you give away some and keep the real special ones? Which do you keep and which go? I like to donate mine because I like to share and also live in a small space to keep the books. But there were times that I wished I had kept certain books because I wanted to read them years later. We do have a book case full of books. The children's books stay time they lose interest, but mine are only the ones I have yet to read or are reference books and such.

responses and comments:

I sell them at our garage sale. But most of my books are med books and I could never sell those...I use them for reference [Druscilla34]
most of em i give away to my friends or donate them to the library. some of it i keep for myself. the hard covered ones or the most interesting ones. the pricey ones i'd sell to my friends. close friends that is. [soundfreak22nd]

it depends on what kinda book it is.....if it is a novel or general book then it is kept wid me only n if it college books or school books i sell them to second hand market n use the money for myself.... [btamanna]
eexxxxaaactly.. no point in keeping college books.. unless if u're gonna need any for da next semester :D [yng_mastr]

I've got a full and overflowing bookshelf. I'm reluctant to let go of books that I liked. Books that I didn't like, I give away or donate. I hope that one day when I get my own house I can have a huge library. [allyoftherain]
One day that can happen. My father had the over flowing shelves but now has a whole library in his house. Thanks [vicki2876]

I return them to the library. Most of the books I get I check out rather than purchase. It is just cheaper and I don't have to worry about storing them or moving them or even trying to get rid of them. Of course I have some books that I did purchase and they mostly just sit on the shelves collecting dust.happy [mscott]
Ah libraries....something else I love! It's great when you're going through a phase where you're hungry for stuff to read but have no cash to buy. Of course, as a book collecting enthusiast, this presents me with a problem; if I like the book, I really want to buy a copy for my collection to read again later. I have to make a note of it or add it to my (very, very long) Amazon wish list, so that I don't forget about it. Of course many of them end up on lists for years and get lost. years later I'll see or hear about an old book I liked and it will re-ignite my enthusiasm to get hold of a copy. You know, until contributing the this thread, I hadn't realised what a book nut I was! He he Jazz [jazzchameleon]

i like to keep my books, and will re-read them at some stage. got to get a book shelf to put them on so i can make some space in the hall way. ive still got all my books from when i was younger, not get rid of them either. they live in a big box over at my mums house. [weasel81]
I would like to have some of my old children's book to read to my children now. LOL Nice [vicki2876]

We have SO many books in the house... eek! Each daughter has shelves in her room that are usually full to overflowing. Then, there are two bookshelves in the playroom to handle the rest. Books sort of cycle with them. New ones start in their rooms, to be read and re-read (both are avid readers and have been since before kindergarten!). When the shelves get too full, I ask them to sort through and make a pile to be either donated to the school, sold to the secondhand book store, sold at a garage sale or simply given away to other families. The second pile they make has whatever books they are still interested in reading and those migrate to the downstairs shelves. LOL It's a process we repeat several times a year. I never rush them to get rid of books though. I believe their love of reading has evolved into an aptitude for writing and has also greatly furthered them in their studies. [thinkingoutloud]
Super sweet that they love to read! Our school does a book swap once a year which we LOVE. [vicki2876]

We have a community book club. A lot of us were talking about this very thing a few years back and we decided to have a meeting once a year and exchange books. I save all of mine up that I wish to get rid of ( I have a few keepers!LOL) and in July we meet at the community center and go through all the books that everyone has donated. What is left we donate to the church for their annual Rummage sale for the Kids that go to church camp. We decided on July simply because the church uses the same community building for their sale the following day so we can just leave them there for them and not have to pack them back and forth. [fasttalker]
We just sprea the word by mouth and posted a few flyers around the neighborhodd letting people know the date to show up if they wanted to be in the "Book Club". The first year we did it we had more people checking it out than actually exchanging books but the following year we had a great turnout. We just set up one table and everyone puts their books on it and goes through to see if anything is of interest to them and takes what they want. We make desserts and have drinks and everyone gets to socialize and visit with each other. When w finish up we just stack th books left nicely and leave them there for the rummage sale the next day. It works out great for us because of the rummage sale. But you could do it in your own home too. Just invite friends over an tell them to bring their books they don't want and do the same thing. Maybe someone would volunteer to take the remaining ones to a City Mission or a rummage sale or have one themselves. [fasttalker]

My favorite, favorite books I keep to read later or to pass on to my friends. All the others I either pass on to my family and friends or donate to our local thrift store. [emma412]

hello vicki after i am finished reading a book, i will pass it along to other people, family, friends of mine to let them enjoy reading it also. then after everybody has read the book, my brother is usually the one that keeps all of the books in his bedroom on a medium sized book shelf. his favorite author is Dean Koontz. i hope that i spelt that correctly. lol right now i am still reading the book Heart Sick and i am almost finished reading that. so after that i get finished reading that book, i will past it along and go to the bookstore and purchase another good book to read. take care and have a beautiful afternoon. [TnWoman]
I have also read many Dean Koontz novels Thanks [vicki2876]

It really depends on the book. Some I keep, because either I know I'll read them again, or they are author signed books...or just have sentimental value. Some I sell on eBay and some I bring to the UBS. I love books and I love the idea of just having tons, and tons of books, but it's just not always feasible to keep them all. [itsmefaith]
I also Love books thanks [vicki2876]

Doesn't matter what the book is; I can't get rid of it. I collect them all and rive the family mad as I have towers of books. Should the one on my bedside table ever collapse I will probably be killed! LOL. I am getting back into children's books, some are really excellent. Which reminds me. I have to upload my latest bedtime story to Youtube. [p1kef1sh]
P1ke..does that mean you found the childrens book for my grandaughter?..she can't wait so let us know when.. xoxoxoxoxo [Rosekitty]

I tend to get attached to books and keep them. I also have a very bad habit of reading mostly the library books and keeping the ones I buy for a rainy day which never comes. When I've finished a book I own which I do not want to keep, I tend to donate it, usually to the library to sell for extra funds. [chocolatechilli]
Thanks chocolatechilli, libraries can use the extra funds for sure. [vicki2876]

Some of them I keep and some I donate...I also have had my kids go through them and pick out the ones they want. Our local library has a store where they sell used books at a discount....so you can donate your old books there. They use the money to buy new books for the library itself. [jillhill]

Well most times I pass them along to family or friends that like to read the same books as me. If no one wants them I donate them or tade them in. I still have about a hundred at a time though,LOL. [CRIVAS]

I just love to read and I don't throw any of my books out. They gather dust over time and I like this as crazy as this sounds! If money was no object then I would love to have my own library with hundreds and hundreds of books! I do have my favourite books out of the bunch and I tend to read them over and over! I'm reading Harry Potter once again!!!! Andrew [AndrewFreyne]
I can so relate to that! [snowcat46]

Since I have moved several times these past few years, I have dramatically cut down on purchasing books. I usually use the local library as my source of reading material, and I only buy books that I really want to add to my collection. Right now, my library is predominantly filled with self-help books and fiction books that have elevated themselves into favorites and worthy to be keepers. I rarely buy anything that I don't want to keep. [wayz12]

I hate reading things a second time and watching movies again. So when im done reading i will keep the books i think are really good. For what reason i dont know cause i wont touch it again. Alot of the time i guess i keep them around so i can share them with other friends who would enjoy it just like i did. [clamburger]

I keep all my books since I like to reread them and do let others boeeow them but i never give them away unless i have duplicates or don't like the certain kind of topic anymore.. [Rosekitty]
whoops..borrow..lol.. [Rosekitty]

I will keep the books I read in the bookshelves. Perhaps after a long time, I will read them again when I have free time. And I can keep them for my child. I always think books are good for children. I love China [youless]
Absolutely great for kids too> THanks [vicki2876]

I keep the ones that I truly love and are part of my series books, and the ones I read that I feel are just ok, I sell to my used book store for credit for new books that I purchase there... it works out great that way and for every 20th book I get a free book. [bookreadermom08]
Sweet free books are always awesome! [vicki2876]

yeah, i have my own library. maybe it can't be named a library because it is very small. and i will donate some of my books sometimes. and also give my friends when they need. [michel_sun]

I keep my books unless I just really didn't like it at all. I love to re-read books. So yes, I have a library. I don't think anyone should get rid of books, unless, like I said, you just didn't like it. Books are a great thing to have and they are great for your imagination. I encourage my son to read. He loves books! He will read the same book over and over! [coxjamir]

I haven't really read that much yet but if I have done reading a book I just might be keeping it for future use and reference. But if somebody wants it or just want to borrow it then they can have it. [silverjam]

Well if I really like the book then I will keep it. However, if I really didn't care for the book much then it will probably get sold online or given to someone. I usually however have been selling used books on Amazon and I'm actually getting rid of quite a few of them. It's nice to be able to sell them and cut down on clutter. I mean, I don't have a large enough space to really keep any books, well at least large numbers of books so being able to at least get some money out of them is nice. [highflyingxangel]
That is great, we all can use some extra cash THanks [vicki2876]

you can always donate them are you could give them to the libary are you could give them to someone who really enjoy reading books.are you could just keep them yourself.and they will be there when you want to read them again.books are knowelege and knowelege is power. [annjilena]

After i read the books(novels) i keep them until my book shelf gets completely filled up with them. After that i donate it to college library for the others to get access to those books. But i don't give all of my books,i will donate some which i dont like much and i keep some for many years which i like the most.I will sell my college books after the completion of end term examinations.I dont like to have them in my room. [randheer001]
Ha be done with these text books eh? I agree I sold mine off the minute I could Thanks [vicki2876]

I have 3 bookshelves of books that I could never part with, most were Gifts from my son and most of them are the Stephen King hardcover books which he paid a small fortune for.. I will read everyone of them again before long, so I keep them.. I do also love to read everything I can get my hands on and I have a friend who gives me some books, plus others I find at yard sales.. I love to read Readers Digest and Guideposts also.. Most of my magazines and the Readers Digest and Guideposts are donated to the Ronald McDonald house so that the parents can take them with them as they visit their children in the hospital, they are portable enought to stuff in their purses.. Hardcover book, the ones that I don't keep, are donated to our local library, I usually check out 2 books and donate 2 or 3 when I return the ones that I checked out.. I also keep one of the nurses at my husbands doctor's office supplied in Dean Koontz books.. So, I really do enjoy books and hope everyone else does.. There is no better place to get lost, than in a good book.. [DonnaLawson]
I do hope your son is finished with the Ronald McDonald house, it is a great place to visit if you don't have to.. I feel for the parents who have to be there, because of the reasons for being there, so maybe the Guideposts and the REaders Digest help them to escape for a few minutes at a time.. Hope you and your son never have to go back there unless it is a visit only.. Have a great day.. [DonnaLawson]

When I get finished reading my books I either hand them down to my mother or if she is the one who gave them to me I will donate to the library since I love going there and getting books. Makes me feel good about giving the books they are always appreciative. Most books are brand new sometimes. If I kept them they would just collect dust and be in the way. [mtdewgurl74]

I treasure most of my books after I have read them. I have what I consider a library although right now I don't have a physical room that is my library. I have a few paperback books that I enjoy and just pass on, but for the most part I keep my books and treasure them for what I learned from them. [makingpots]

I usually keep those books that I like - either by my favorite authors or of the genres I favor, like crime, murder mystery and horror. The rest, I would give away. [lazeebee]

We have a small library at home where we can stack books that we have used as students or hobby books that we finished reading.keeping these books has its benefits.Old books from school can serve as references for future schoool works or other purposes. From time to time we also reread hobby books that we have at home.I plan to keep them with me because i considere them as treasures.I love reading, thus i also love books. [JOIEMARVIC]

I usually put them away up on a shelf, especially if it was a book that I enjoyed. That way, I can reread it at a late date. happy [sacmom]

I would like to read a lot of books and if i find any book very interesting i would keep them separately in my cupboard and whenever i shift my house i would take those books along with me. [ganak8]

i love to read books and enjoy it completely.i generally keep the books with me even after finishing reading the book.i at times think of donating the books but then i think what if i feel like reding it again so when this comes in my mind i keep it with me although i donot have lots ok books but whatever books i have i keep it with me. [henahuda]

A mixture really for us. If there is a book that we particularly enjoy, then we will probably keep it, at least for a while. If it is an ordinary everyday bok that we read and liked but had no special attachment to it, then we will donate it to the local Oportunity/Thrift Shop. These shops are run by a charity and so the money they raise is used to help the needy. In fact we buy a lot of our books from them in the first place as they are always in good clean condition and best of all cheap. So it might cost us a couple of dollars or maybe less to read a book but it is still worth the money. Any reference books we will keep most of the time and certainly if they are about Organic gardening. Others we might keep if they have things that we can use or do on our Farm at some time or other. At present we still have the books our children had when they were children. But the time will come when they can take the books themselves, so for the present we just make sure they are kept clean and dusted! Since we started to get some grandchildren, we have bought some children's books to read to our grandchildren when there are visiting us. Those books stay here for the present time but later when there are maybe no more young grandchildren, we will distribute them. Even at their young ages, we have noticed that the grandchildren all have their special or favourite book. [oldboy46]
That is terrific, you are avid readers there! [vicki2876]

I reread books I have bought because I can not remember all that I read. So, it's important to keep the books for future references. However, many years ago I had to sell the books I bought merely because I was hard up at that time. NOw with more stable financial condition I dream of having book collections of mine. [yanzalong]

Hardcover books I keep and have pretty large selection. Soft covered ones I take to a store when I can exchange them on a 2 for 1 deal. [whiteheather39]

I have a bookcase where I put books I want to keep. Those I don't keep I donate to the local Goodwill store so that they can sell them. Here in the UK the ones I don't want I take to the local library where they either put them on the shelves for others to take out and read or they put them on a special tsable they have with books for sale to raise money to buy books they need. In my bookcase at home I have several hardback books,I have books that are written and have a lot of pictures in them both old and more recent about Sheffield - my home town where I was born. These I keep for my children and grandchildren. I have three authors that I keep their books. Rosamund Pilcher, Danielle Steele and my favorite Sue Grafton. [us2owls]
That is awesome that you give them away to charity. [vicki2876]

If I don't think I'll ever want to read them again I will sell them on ebay! I will ask around my friends first and see if they want to read them, and I will lend them to my friends if they do :) Sometimes I keep books. I have an awful lot of books which I probably will never read again, but like to keep anyway! When I am a little richer (if ever!) I would love to dedicate a room to my books, and just have shelves and shelves of them :) [GemmaR]

Hello Vicki. I have been a voracious reader since childhood and had bought and been presented with several books. My cupboards were overflowing with comics, novels of all types, bestsellers, educational books and many others. I gave away many to my friends, donated a few to libraries. Nowadays my interests have changed to spiritual reading and once again my cupboard is filling up with these books. However this time i will not dispose any of them but when i make a will i will see that they go to a couple of spiritual organisations to which i am connected so they can keep them in their libraries as reference books. [veejay19]
That is a wonderful idea! Thanks veejay [vicki2876]

i dont like to read it again coz i think it is a waste of time.so i usually borrow books from the library instead of buying one.lol!can save me a lot of money. [littlek1230]

i have a mini library inside my room coz i requested my mom to make me a special cabinet for all my books..normally..after finishing a book, i always pass it on to my family and friends..so i can share the joy of reading..once they return the book, i will put them to rest on my mini library..if somebody wants to borrow it..i have a special borrower's card for my book which i made myself.. [carlynganda]
That is great Maybe one day I will visit the carlynganda library. I love libraries! [vicki2876]

Most books I keep, just because I like to re-read them at later dates. Some books I donate to literacy programs, but most of them I keep. At one time I had over 500 books in my library, but I had to leave them behind when I had to leave an abusive relationship and there was just no way to take them with me. I'm slowly rebuilding my library, and I'll get there eventually. I like Thomas Jefferson's quote, "I could not live my life without books." How true that is for me. [artistmel2000]
Starting over has been a long road, but I'm getting there. I'm in a good place, I have my dog and I'm rebuilding my life along with my library. I do check out garage sales, goodwill stores, used book stores, and eBay. I'm trying to replace some of my books, some of which were out of print. I've been successful with a few of them, and I'm thankful for that. Thanks. [artistmel2000]

I don't have a habit of reading novels or other such books, I only have a collection of computer related books, so I preserve it, so that I can use it as a reference. [yashassid]

i dont have library :( To small Home but im happy. and i hope, i can have it if have much money [ossan1]

If it is a novel I will give it away or take it to the clubhouse located in my Condo Community because there is a library there. I like nonfiction/political books also so I keep those for reference and their are some others I keep. Lately though i am downsizing so i will probably give more away. I do have my mom who reads but she is picky, I do not know why but bless her heart she likes to stick with certain authors and does not like to try new ones. If I like an author I like to read theirs but i will try new authors. So mom gets books and I also give some to friends if they read or if they are going to be laid up for awhile with knede surgery or something like that. [muscles4me]
Great idea thanks [vicki2876]

I keep lots of my books to read them someday again. Some of them I sell (most the ones from my schools, didatic ones). But I have lots of them kept at home. Itīs always great to have the opportunity to read them again sometime later. [deborahkat]

yes iam also having the habit of donating the books to others.intrested books i will keep and oter books i won't study...ya i also had the interest to study the childerens bookes.... [ferrai]

I have my own library for those I like. Otherwise I send them to the library or many types of local fundraisers. [danrunsfast614]

Great question,I know what you mean,I couldn't ever imagine re-reading a book,No matter how much i enjoyed it,It just doesn't feel right.Due to the lack of longevity with books i like to simply give mine away to charity shops,It seems the best place for them. [joniebee]
It is great to have them there so others can enjoy thanks [vicki2876]

We keep a lot of our books. In fact, we have four book cases crammed with books and the kids' books are in our son's room. On the other hand, if the books were only so so or were really bad, then we take them to a second hand store. There is one that gives you credit for your books and you can then use that to buy "new" used books. I love doing this so that there is always something new to read. Back in July we spent about $130 on used books at a book sale. They were great prices and for most of the paperback books that we bought we paid 1/5 of $1 because of the sale! It was great...and there are tons of books I haven't yet read. [aidenofthetower]
That is awesome and very affordable! Thanks [vicki2876]

Just stock them on one of my book cabinets for future references. Not just for me but for my family or even my future children. I sometimes lend it to some of my friends and relatives or I just gave way a few of them for those children who really needs it in their education.. IF the book would be I think, is I dont need.. [paoxav]

All of the above. I have a set of shelves just for my favorite fiction books. The ones I reread about every year. If I'm not going to reread something, I don't keep it. Those either get donated to the library, community action, or sometimes I try to sell them. Like romances. The library doesn't want anymore of those! I also have a set of shelves for reference books I keep using, or just don't want to get rid of. Then there's the other sets of shelves holding the books I want to read, but haven't gotten around to yet. Mostly reference. It's my little library. I don't loan many out, because they don't come back. I got tired of that. [snowcat46]

Lately I have been selling my books on eBay after I read them. I have also been going through and grouping them with a lot of my books that have the same interest. I haven't really been making any money on them (even miscalculated shipping and lost money once). I am just putting them in the hands of someone who is actually interested in the books. I tried to sell them at a garage sale in the summer, but no one seemed to be interested. [kykidd]

My wife actually has a used book business. So when I finish a book, I give it to her to sell. She usually gets all the books I read cheap for me as well, so it is a win, win situation. Of course if it is a book I really like and I think I will read it again I will just keep it, but usually my wife just sells them. [thedaddym]

me and my mother in law swap booksback and forth all the time somtimes she gets them off of the bookmobile from the library or buys them at walmart or i buy them or get free ones in the mail them we each read them and whe we are both done with them we bag them up and take them to our local library . we have discovered a new series of roamnce books they are very good nothing smutty about them they are called love inspired by steeple hill publishing co. they are hard to find sometimes but we are lucking out and finding them more readily available now and hwenever i talk to people about books i usually mention them now i dont know what kinds of books you like to read but if you like romances check them out the way i got started on them i went to the website e harlequin and thats where i found them and we were hooked there are different series inthem and the best one i have come across is the ones about dry creek. you may not like them i dont know but if you are an avid book reader you wont knck them till you read one i hope you can find one an try it well happy reading. [frygirl]
My dad and I swap to each other as well. Great Thanks [vicki2876]

i dont read books,i dont know why but i just hate books yuk lol [Naved123]

Actually a book is a storehouse. We can learn and know many unknown through that. so we must sotr it in our mind and also at the storage way. Well i like to share my read books to my friends, relatives or whose are closer to me. [ojanakotha]
Agreed. I love the places I go with reading thanks [vicki2876]

I sell them if they are not useful. But I will keep useful books most of them are academic, and some other novels i keep are the ones i like very much. I read for many times. knowledge is useful when you need to do someting with refrences, so I keep the very ueful ones. [kristenffdd]

Well, i think it's a good question. I think you and your father are great, you donate your books and spread knowledge, and your father give his books a nice "home" For me, I don't have a library but i do have a bookshelf where i put most of my books there. These ones usually are my favorite ones. And since i bought so many books it happened to me sometimes that i couldn't find my book anywhere. I do not donate books because i don't know which organization i should turn to, but i do give some to my cousins and my friends. I've started book-crossing since i entered the university, i found there's a club in my college exchanging books and book-cross books, i donate a lot of my books to this club. Your discussion here reminds me of finding an organization through which i can donate some books to there kids living in the remote areas of China. I'll try to see if it works. Have a nice day! [kianli]

I am the kind of person who wants to keep every book I like, but I don't have enough room. I will usually borrow books from the library and if I love them to where I know I will want to read them again I will go and buy them. I have to be careful, though, because my mother will cycle through and try to donate some of them. I like to donate a few, but I love books so much, I really don't like giving too many of them up because I feel I'll regret it later. [StephyJ_83]
I can understand that. Thanks [vicki2876]

I loan them to friends and friends of friends and then they go on my shelf until I'm out of room and I need to take a cart full to the used book store. I'm at that point again. I'm double shelving most of my paperbacks. The books must breed while I'm sleeping. It seems as soon as I give a hundred away, and have empty space, I have yet again more than I can find room for. I have 5 bookcases so it shouldn't happen that fast. But I love to read and they pile up. I also borrow a ton of books. The English speakers here pass books around so each book gets read by about 10 people. [TheCatLady]
I'm a real bookworm. Also a bibliophile so it's hard to give away my books. I don't have a choice though. I don't have room for any ore books unless I purge my selection once a year. [TheCatLady]

I give mine away. I used to keep them if I really liked them, but I never reread them...so now instead of collecting dust I give them away. Reference books and self-help books I keep, but fiction ones are handed off to the next reader...usually I recycle them at work. [taface412]
That is nice. :) however I may be afraid to give my coworkers some of the fiction I read. They would realize how sick my mind could be. LOL [vicki2876]

I don't have my own library but that doesn't make me give away my books. I try and keep those I have bought. But usually I swap books with my family, friends, so in the end they are somewhere around me even if not in my book shelf. I am glad my parents have saved most of my children books because they are so cute, unique and will be useful for my children. [Lindery]
I would have liked to have some of my old favorites as well. We have kept the "special" ones from my children for later generations. Thanks [vicki2876]

I have donated loads of books to our local charity store, and I have also sold them on Amazon and E-bay. The books I enjoy I keep as I will go back and read them again and again. :-) Derek [derek_a]
Wow I didn't think that selling them online would get much thanks! [vicki2876]

I am a book worm and in the process end up collecting numerous books. The situation gets so bad at times that I have do a bit of spring cleaning. I usually go to a second hand book store to sell them off. At other times, I like to exchange them for some other book if the situation ever presents itself. [nick1in]

We dont have a library though, after i read my books i always place it into the bookshelves and never let anyone touched it without my permission. I always get paranoid when someone do so. Hehehe. It's a good thing though that you share it to those less fortunate, at least they'll get a chance to read some good books! Generosity is truly a virtue. [salbahis06]
My closest library is a half hour drive and I wish there was one closer. Too bad you can't get to one too. Thanks [vicki2876]

I've never gave away the books I have read.because I think many years later I might would read them again,it'd remind me not only the stories in those books but also some stories happen to me during the time I was reading the books. [mikexiao]

I have a bookshelf where I can store them. I put others in cupboards. Sometimes I donate duplicate books that I might have but most often I do lend them to friends and relatives. I prefer to keep all my books for further reference. (c) ronaldinu 2009 - the more people I meet-the more I love my dog [ronaldinu]

I give the books I studied in my lower classes to my cousins so that they need not buy them. But classic books I don't give away.I have he most collection of law books which I need for daily use for practice. But outdated or pre-amended law books I give to my juniors so that they can acquaint themselves with the basic provisions of law and some detailed rulings of the supreme court.I have a great collection of some really good books which I consider as a treasure. What does your father do with his books.Does he just put it in the shelf or arrange them subject wise.I prepare a log for all the books I have and arrange them according to different subjects by assigning them an alphabet and a number. For example if the books relate to psychology I will give them numbers like Ph-1,Ph-2 etc.If it relate to history H-1,H-2 etc.How does your dad arrange them.Do you also help him in getting it arranged? [cosmopolitan]

My father has an impressive library. I myself have one, but not much space to put it at. As well as my art work which isn't as much as the books since I live at home. so, for the most part, I borrow books, or buy them when I can, then after I'm done, I swap, sell, give, loan what have you. One time, I was selling them to a lady that had a borrowing library. But for now, I try to give the books I have to the library here in Prichard who could use it. What I want, I keep. [Savvynlady]

Most of my books I borrow from the library. Those that I do buy are usually second hand books from half price book stores or goodwill. On the occasion that I do actually splurge and buy a book , I almost always keep that one. The others I will either give to others to read and enjoy or donate them back to goodwill so I can keep the chain of giving going. If no one donated books then what would I read?? [tracie1758]

I have about 100 books that I still have, reference books, favorites, that I hang onto, the rest I sell, trade or give away. As far as children's books, I have all of the ones that were readable from when my kids were young and a few from my youth, that now belong to my granddaughter. We love books and love passing on our love of reading to the little ones. My granddaughter LOVES books! [nanajanet]

I usually give them away... I like to share books to friends especially if I really like them... (After I've finished reading, of course...) [lizavm]

I exchange them with other people at www.bookmooch.com and trade them out for new ones. It helps you clear out the books you have already read and get new/different ones for next to nothing. [lilybug]

I trade books with about 4 people, then they go to the used bookstore and are traded for more. I also use the library. [savypat]

vicki2876 I have a library of both fiction and non-fiction, but I try to keep it down to a minimum. I have some of my favorite authors that I like to keep in hardback and even with them I am choosey. If it's an author that has an unlimited series of books and it just keeps growing, those books I will pass on to friends or donate them someplace. There's a used bookstore that is near me and I can take them there and get credit for them and use the credits to buy new, used books. I like to think my shelves reflects my points of view to others. I think that I want my grandchildren look at my shelves and see that not only was I an avid reader with a great passion for books, but also that I would hope that I inspire in them the passion to read as well. DCMerkle [DCMerkle]

I am a book nut. I keep every book I read. I am running out of places to put them between the books I've read and the books I have yet to read (about 200 of those!) This year I was forced to get rid of some books and will probably get rid of even more. I brought about a hundred home from my parents' after my father passed away. I keep looking at them and thinking there are a lot of them I probably won't read. But books themselves, no matter what the type, are a magnet to me. I am drawn to them. I buy them and then take forever to get around to reading them. I will be donating some books to a used/charity store. The books I refuse to give up are those by favourite authors, favourite biographies and of course autographed books. I am becoming an avid autographed book collector. Those are always signed in front of me upon meeting the author. I do have some reference books, mostly on writing and some on health/home remedies. [patgalca]

I've thought of selling my books, but I didn't want to regret getting rid of them so they are in my shelves... I'm going to just keep them, since I enjoy getting back at them from time to time. [Lore2009]

I keep all my books and lend them to people after I finish reading them. I wouldn't mind giving them away but I get personal with my books, I write in them and highlight stuff, well it depends on the book. So like you say I'd like to refer back to them to re read and then see what my thought process was at the time. I hope to open a library one day. :) [earthmother]

Well, I don't own a lot of books...mostly I just steal them from my brother...I lend them... The few I own myself, I read a few times...I keep them in a chest...lol [ikzelf]

I dont like to sell books. I am a fanatic of my library and I feel very very blue when my wife force me to put some of my books in a box because there is no more space in the bookshelf. But even I know they are going to a box deep somewhere, I dont know to give them away, they are mine, and I kind of fall in love with every book I read and it is very hard for me. I never give a second thought to this, but now... thanks for making me think more. [tepitenio]

hmmm....this is an excellent question. i like to read them and then give them away. when i was younger and read childen's books i would love to reread them. but now when i read novels it's takes forever for me to finish them. so i really feel like rereading them. i would choose to drop them off at half price books and cash in on them. sometime i give books out on ocassionally. Just depends on how i feel. [mlw32785]

We have cycled through many books, though we are getting a collection of them again. They are mostly ones that have not been read, or I have felt like they have not been read thouroughly enouhg. Since most people are not interested in the things we read, it is very rare if they are given to anyone else. [UtopianIdealist]

I always keep the ones that touch me. It seems I always find a friend or family member to loan it out too which often times leads to great discussions. It is those discussions that mean more to me then what I alone got from reading the book. [frost240z]

It depends on the book what i do with it. Some if i dislike them or ended up with more than one copy i donate to the library or a special care home or Romance novels i always pass on to an aunt or other family member. The books i love and series i collect i have a library of - there are about 600 books in my personal library right now. [saundyl]

I keep most of my books I have read. I have know to reread some of my books! Some of my favorite books are the Laura Ingalls Wilder "Little House" books! So I have a collection of books that keeps on growing! [blue65packer]

My books are kept in a shelf at home. I collect books since I was 9 years old. I dont want to give away my books because I read them again and again. But I let my friends borrow it. The problem is, most of my books are not returned. [aquiah]

I keep everything and pile them all in a table. but some of my old stroy books when i was a kid were already given to my young cousins. . . [shalybhe29]

I always keep my books and read them over and over again so i can gain a deeper knowledge of the plots [anklesmash]

I keep all my books in my personal library. The reference books, especially those that are so outdated, I donate. [mauieflores]

I have very few books that I have kept to read again. I have two book cases full of books that I plan to read. I love books. I used to save all my books but then I just ran out of room so I started selling the ones from when I was younger like baby-sitters club books & R.L.Stine books on ebay. Anything that I knew wasent going to sell on ebay or that didnt sell when I did list it I would just put in my yard sale. Most of the books in the yard sale would sell. I priced them at 10 cents each. The danielle steel books I had I gave to my mother in law. Recently I met a friend who really enjoys books as I do so I passed on a bag of books to her and she passed on a few books to me as well. Its fun to get books that others have read that are new to you. It not only keeps them out of the landfill but gives me something enjoyable to do in my free time. Reading helps me relax. [shaggin]

I keep them. I have a really hard time parting with my books. Until very recently I had ALL my Textbooks and homework, organized by class and semester. I finally threw out the homework and sold what I could of the books at garage sales and on amazon.com. I never reread them so I don't know why I'm so attached to them, but I am. I guess I'm just a packrat. You should see my closets. ha ha. [MissAmie]

I read a lot so I retain a lot of books at one time. In the complex where I live, there are a lot of older people who love to read and we have a swap table for books in the lobby. When I finish reading books, rather than clutter my place up or wonder what to do with them, I simply set them on the swap table for anyone else in this complex who might want to read them...It seems to be working well and the books have a good turnover rate. Its like we have a small library down there and if someone doesnt return a book, its no big deal. I only keep very special books like those based on popular movies. The rest are history. I also donate many to seniors organizations and flea markets.. [sandymay48]

No, i don't have a library and I cannot sell or give away any of the books i have. If i ever purchase one particular book then it will mean i want to keep it forever. I will pass it on to my future childrens, so they would know what kind of book i like to read and maybe they will understand my interest on those books i have. [viana20]

I have about two dozen boxes here stuffed with my collection that kept growing ever since I became independent. Once in a while I think about walking them a box at a time to a library (I don't have a car) but I have yet to actually start doing it. Has anyone mentioned the ebay solution yet? (at over 10 pages and with dial up the task of reading all the responses is a daunting task) That may be a real way to make money if you know what you are doing. [Qaeyious]

It's not often books are bought in our houshold so we don't tend to accumulate many. I think the last time we got rid of some was around three years ago. I don't think it would be worth the pennies we'd get for them on ebay, with all the trouble of listing and packing them so we just bundled them off to a charity shop. [stmech0]

I pretty much have my own library, or perhaps collection since many of the books I own I haven't gotten around to reading yet. If I really like a book, I'll want to read it more than once, so I couldn't bear to part with it. If I come across any books that I'm not likely to read again, then I'd probably try and sell them. [andrilena]

I keep books a lot of books. As a family of 6 I guess we own ove a 1000 books. I live in Japan but can't read enough Japanese to be able to read books from the library so I buy whenever I can, usually online as even with shipping it is a lot cheaper. My four kids also love to read and will spend hours with books and of course some become favourites. Fortually my kids can read Japanese so a trip to library for them and my husband means them coming back with about 50 books, 10 each!! That saves a lot of money. Also the trend in Japan recently is recycle so sometimes we can get good books for a few yen, so my bookshelves have grown and grown and grown. I was sorting the other day to give away some books, I found about 100 by the time the kids had looked at the books and decided what they wanted to keep the pile was just 20 books!! Never mind! Jacks [dreamjapan]

I consider the books I had read as my precious property. For me they are wealth. I love to refer to them from time to time. Maree Tee http://mareetee.blogspot.com [mareetee]

What kind of book u have i like self improvement book http://www.bestweba1.com [bestweba1]

I actually have two responses: If the book is something I feel needs to be shared I hand the copy to one of my best friends. I then ensure that they hand it to the next, and if it never makes it back I just buy another copy. I want to support the author of the great stories, anyways. Otherwise, (or when I buy my second copy) I build my library. Three huge shelves and counting. [GuffinMopes]

About this problem my answer is when i finished a book i will palced it in my book case, because i am not sure i will reread them in the future.Every book to me is a special one so i seldom donated or throw them away. [hongxue007]

keep them and make library in my room... all collection of books i read make me know something that I don't know... I will keep them not let them dirty and not useful again because maybe all that book can be read my children ... that my dream for they get smart everyday... [dianni]

I keep them in my library. this way I can preserve them and read laer if the need arises. I also can give to others for some time, so instead of selling it for some money, i save them and this way more people car read it through me. prashant@friendstime.com [prashmagic]

I love books and have a lot of un-read ones (over 100). Since having my daughter 2 years ago, I don't seem to have much time to read. A lot of my books have been bought in deals 3 for 2 offers or sales etc, so I have more than I can read, but when I actually do get round to reading them I either pass onto frineds or sell them on. I keep saying I will get round to reading them some day, we'll see, but i won't get rid of them until they are read! Happy reading!!Keep up the good work in sharing! [jmtdgtsam55]

I love reading too specially the best selling novels autobiographies etc. but as much as I'd like to keep all of my books like you I only got a very small space to store them so I try to just exchange or swap them around with my friends who also love reading books. that way it circulates around and everyone gets a chance to read. i only really keep the ones that are given to me as gifts. But my sister on the other hand got a large collection of books anyway she got a bigger space to place those books lucky her. [MNRFOLEY]

I like read book and buy book , so I have so much of them. Most of time I send my books to my younger sisters and friends after I read them. I just keep the reference book to use in the later time. I think share book with other is a good thing. [cici929]

99% of the time I keep them. I love books and collect them. If I enjoy a book then I'll want to read it again at some point. It's not as stupid as it sounds, because when you've got hundreds of books you end up with ones you havent read for so long that you cant remember the details of what happened, especially the endings. I also have a lot of reference type books which come in handy sometimes. Every so often I'll get a book that turns out not to be what I thought it was, or just not very interesting so I'll sell it or give it away. There are some reference books to do with learning something or a hobby which I may have lost interest in and those can go to. But I loooove collecting books. They're like old friends, sad as that sounds! I have a friend who passes on every book after reading it, unless it's something very special. I like the philosophy behind her idea but I just can't bring myself to part with them. Plus she says once she's read a book, she wont read it again (crazy!), so I suppose it would be pointless for her to keep them then. She also only buys books from new or takes from a friend. She wont buy second-hand books from charity shops etc because she doesn't like the thought of not knowing who has touched them and where they might have read them (ewwwww!!!!). That makes sense to me too but then I love books and dont have much money, so I just buy second-hand and try not to think about it! Long Live Books!! [jazzchameleon]

I have many books that I have collected over the years. My sister tells me I could start my own library in my house. I do pass along books that I have read and have no interest in keeping or reading again to family and friends to read and pass along. I have books that I lend to family and friends to read and then return also. I have tried donating books to libraries and nursing homes and missionaries, women's shelters, etc. but they don't seem to be in need or appreciative of the donations around my area, so I just pass them along. [quinnkl]

reading is an ART which needs patience& presence of mind.favourite books are one which ONE find a different sort of happiness,a fresh new experiance.whenever u read that book u get experianced 2 that.so best way is 2 share the book with who is intrested in that.BUT make sure that it reaches 2 the right hand otherwise it is safe on u r hands [wishnew]

Once after reading the books of mine i just use to keep in my cupboard rack and create a new library. If any of my friends interested to read that book then i use to pass this book and will get it back again. [jjstare]

Mine hang around forever. Sometimes I will reread a book i've already read. Sometimes they just gather dust. I have used some as blockades for small wandering animals in the home, to keep them from getting in to a place i cannot get them out of. Sometimes I use them as legs to replace the ones on my broken furniture, or to get a box spring and mattress off the ground. [butterbear]

i love books. after i read a book i will store it in our shelves and if i have nothing to do i read it again specially those books that interest me much. [mapuang]

After reading a book, i usually lend it to others. It's my way of sharing what i have learned. At least 5 of my books now are still with my friends. And its good to know they appreciate it also. Sometimes, if the concept is complex, i read it again so that i could increase the absorption of knowledge. [LionHeart319]

Right now, I have been stacking the latest books up. I wish I had a nice bookshelf to put them on. I have a lot of "Keepers" that are boxed up from when I moved. Since I don't really have any place to put them I haven't taken them out. When I go through and get rid of books, I donate them. [reinydawn]

I started to read novels, inspirational books, and other types when I was in highschool. My teacher asked us to do some book report, and I was lazy reading those kind of classic novels. But later on, a friend introduced me to other books which may fit my interests. I usually save some of my money to buy books that i plan to read. after I bought a book, I place a plastic cover to preserve its longevity. Sometimes, I read them more than twice, and I also share my books with my friends whenever we discussed some good books to read. I never sell them because for me, they are precious. [Patzi_md]

I try to give them away to Salvation Army Thrift Store or Goodwill. I still have way too many books and I really do not read anymore, most of my information comes from the internet. I do however have lots of reference material that I hang onto for some reason. I often wonder why books are so popular in that the information on all the books I have could probably be kept of a couple of DVD's and so I could save a lot of space. I read a science fiction story where they actually had a small apartment but electronically it seemed bigger because when you went towards the boundaries it expanded. Too bad you could not do that with books. The book would be thin as two covers but the insides could have an infinite number of pages that take up no room. [mariposaman]

I have a bookshelf and am happy to see it full of books, though I regularly replace them with new ones. The textbooks and magazines are mostly gone, and there are times when the books are given to friends. I like reading from my collection when I feel like, especially in a sunny afternoon with a cup of tea or coffee to go with. [zhuhuifen46]

I usually lend them to my friend or keep to my collection, but if the book is interesting, i will read it again until I get bored [mifmifrohman]

I was an avid reader from the time I was able to read. Because I was reading very much and very fast, I had a membership at the local library and I was visiting them I think every day, or in extreme cases, every 2 days.I was finishing a book almost, on may way home from the library.I had to walk close to an hour to get there and another hour to get home. Now, I'm still reading a lot, and still have a library card. I find much more easy to go back and get a book I would like to read again, than to fill my house(as is filled with lots of things). I only own very few books, that you can not find them easy at the library. [ladynetz]

Since we are homeschooling the primarily library of books are kids learning books and other 1st time readers books. Our kids seem to do better reading the bible though. Especially my son, my daughter is good at looking up the scriptures and my son loves reading them. He has learned the art of not asking mommy or daddy what this or that word is, he tries to sound it out first and then if me or his mom hears him say incorrectly, we'll let him know that isn't correct, we let him work for the prize of getting the word correctly. We give our kids hi fives, and they just love to hear mommy or daddy say, "that's right, Great job, gimme some!" My wife is a advid book reader so when we got married, I didn't realize how much of a brainiac she is. She loves reading the series by Tim Lahaye, the left back behind series. Since we've been married for 8+ years, it will be 9 years, next Thursday, the 29th; and I inherited a library from marrying her. We've both had gone through old books and we donate them to other homeschool families or friends. Like for instance I had 20 minibooks on "Attitudes" I gave them to a men's group that I belonged to. Since they were in leadership and learning how to express themselves without losing their tempers. The old saying, "it's better to give than to receive, is true!" [hdjohnson]

After reading books I like to hold on to them. When I look at the shelves of books I remember each one and the story it holds. I them to friends and family. My "lending library" gets used often. Cookbooks, fiction, non-fiction, I just can't get enough. I have even bought books at Antique stores. Sometimes you find amazing things in those old books. [sunshynehs]

what do you do with your books after reading them??? hmmmm. i don't have a library. I just keep the book so that i could share it to others. just like whenever he have a literary analysis. some of my classmates borrow books from me. [Docdocdee]

Since I don't have a shelf, I keep them in a box. I can pull them out each time I needed a reference or when I wanted to read them again. I keep all of my books and I don't give them away since I give them much value. If there's a book I would want to share with my friends, I usually buy another copy and give it to them as a gift. [nympha687]

I keep a small or....not so small library.I also sell them at used book stores. My home town had lots of those stores,so I would always buy a few book there too.....LOL!..I give some away also. [flame2000]

I always keep my books, and re-read them when I feel like. Although I like to lend books to others, as long as they take good care of the books. I have a whole room dedicated to just keeping all my books, and now even that doesn't seem to be enough! I even ask for books, like the story books, from my sisters or brothers. I like to read and so can never let go of any of my books. And incidentally, my most favourite time of the year is Jan-Feb, when the Book Fair is organized! [Morpheus3000]
hey i am ravish i have added you as friend plz accept the friend request in the friend column....nice response i like it.....if you have any doubt regarding mylot i will definitely help you......................................... [koolravish]

Hello Vicki, well I used to be a terrible person, as I was unable to throw away anything. Even the attic of my parents is still full of my old school books and I could never understand when I was young, how people had the courage to go and sell their books. Then two years ago I discovered Amazon, started selling books and began to enjoy it so much that I searched all over the place for books I could sell. Even last week I sold a tax book I bought to help me with my tax declaration - absolutely unprecedented in my life and much better for it! Have a good weekend. Umart [umart13]

Hi. When I finish with a book I give it to my mother...she in turn gives it to someone she knows. When my mother is finished with a book, she gives it to me and I pass it along to a church for their rummage sale. I have bought many a book at yard and rummage sales. I love books and love to read, so I always have lots of books to read. Nadine [Nadinest1]

I keep books around forever. Unless I suddenly move and leave them behind. It never takes long to accumulate another big collection though. I find them useful for other things as well, like when i broke a leg off the couch. Why do they break so easily? That is sooo annoying! How you been vicki?? [CurlyRedII]

Hi there vicki! I do have a mini-library. I have been collecting books since I was a child. I have given away some of the books from way back. However, I keep books that are very special to me. I lend to other people but I am very careful as to whom I would lend the books. There are some books that have been in the shelf for quite awhile now and yet I would open them and browse from time to time. [dolce_vita78]

happyWhen i read books already.I will keep them on the shelves.May be i gave to the poor schools. [busky5]

after reading my books of choice, i will donate it to the nearest library where lots of people can also enjoy reading them [vathsala30]

I am a big book lover and I started keeping them with me after I completed reading of those since my 7th standard of education. Its really amazing to me. Some times I do refer information from those books and If I find any thing real to implement now, immediately I pass it to my students to refer. We have two stairs of house and I filled one stair with full of my books collections.. imagine how many books I have with me. [gmkk1986]

I usually lend my books out to family and friends, or just give them away. Sometimes I like to get certain books back that I really like, and might like to read again at some point. [irishmist]

I am like you. I live in a small apartment so really do not have the room to be collecting books. I don't often read them more than once anyway. If I get the urge to later on, I can always visit the library. I usually pass them on so others can enjoy them. I have a small little bookcase that has a few reference books and books that I have yet to read. I pick up books 2nd hand so that I'm never without something to read. I also visit the library often. I have another small box of books that I can't seem to part with. I have a very old leather bound bible, a set of Alice & Wonderland books that were my Aunt's when she was little and an Anderson's fairy tale book from when I was a little girl. I also have a newer book of short childrens stories that I keep for when my granddaughter visits as she loves to be read to. happy [sid556]
