responses and comments:
I'm a fan of speculative and fantasy fiction so here's five that tops my list: 1. Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files 2. Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality 3. Piers Anthony's Xanth Series 4. George RR Martin's Aces and Jokers series 5. J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series [rivengodwind]
that so cool... I havent read any of the Harry Potters, but my stepfather has and he loves them...he has the whole series and one day I will get to them!! thanks for the response and have a great day! Happy mylotting and happy reading! [bookreadermom08]
Of course Harry Potter by J.K. I read them from when I was eleven years old.Though I haven't read Harry Potter in English, but I like the magic world J.K. give us. [beeduzhe]
I also have not read the Harry Potter books but I have heard that they are one of the most popular series out there just as well as the movies. [mnk202]
I'm not really into fictional books, I'm more into personal development and DIY books. So far, my favorite are John Maxwell's books about personal development, success, and leadership. Though his books are not really in series, most of them are interconnected to each other and tackles the same thing. The first John Maxwell book that I have read was entitled "Failing Forward". It talks about how turning failures into stepping stones to success and how one should view failures positively and constructively. I really liked the book that I started to buy a series of John Maxwell books and read them. So far, I have about 7 books in my collection and I still continue to have some. I'm planning to collect all of his books. Aside from John Maxwell, I also started to like Robert Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad, Poor Dad". It's a book about how important financial literacy is. Since "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" is the first Robert Kiyosaki book that I have read, I think it's safe to presume that most of his books are all about money and how to make them and how to properly handle them. In the book, he stated the importance of investment and the big mistake that most people are making by purchasing liabilities rather than investing in assets. It's both an eye and mind opener and though I still have to finish the book, it really changed the way I look money now and my approach to it. I have seen a number of Robert Kiyosaki books at different bookstores and I think I'm gonna have a few of those (maybe all of it). Both Maxwell and Kiyosaki has very great and practical ideas that are not that hard to apply though it requires some change in mindset and lifestyle. They both speak from experience and it's clear that their ideas are legitimate and helpful. I just love such kind of books and I don't get tired reading them. [boybato]
Hi there. Trust me, such books are really so enlightening. I really haven't thought that I'd be so hooked to it. I'm reading such books about 2 or 3 times just to really get the whole idea of it. [boybato]
Besides Harry Potter, I like the Study series by Maria V. Snyder. There's only three books in that series. Poison Study, Magic Study, and Fire Study. Now I am reading a series that is a spin of from that series. It's the glass series. So far only one book is out. I don't think it is as good as the study series though. That word sounds weird to me now... Series. Eh, I said it to many times. [Weirdology]
My favorite is the Sharpe series, written by Bernard Cornwell. They're historical novels, over twenty of them, all taking place at the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century, during the Napoleonic wars of Europe. The hero of all the books is Richard Sharpte, who was forcibly recruited into the British army as a young man. The series follows his career all the way through his retirement, shows how he managed to survive appalling conditions during wartime, his struggles to improve his status in life, including eventually becoming a respected officer. The action takes place all over Europe and in India, and the books are very accurate about the history, the Weapons and battles, and what life was like for soldiers. Very exciting stories, with a brilliant hero. [unusualsuspect]
Another one I forgot when I listed mine. 4th behind Pratchett, Kerr, and McCaffrey. Lash [grandpa_lash]
I finished reading The Dark Tower by Stephen King a couple of months ago. I remember I couldn't put the book down until I fell asleep. I am used to his style of writing that I find it hard to read any book from other author unless the storyline is really really good and interesting. It was about 7 books all with different time and places, he is too clever to pull off such wonderful storyline, that I couldn't even guess what would happened next like other story books. It has all feeling and emotion combined together perfectly and clever. But I have to confess that I don't really like the ending though where the hero have to start all over again meaning start over from the beginning, the end was the beginning, the beginning was the end, that sort of thing. I give it 8 star out of 10! [chi2nasrin]
I think my favorite series so far is Isaac Asimov's Foundation Megaseries. I consider all the books in this list to belong to the same series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_series#List_of_books_within_the_Foundation_Universe I've only read the 15 that are numbered and 3 of the other, but I am still amazed by the Universe Asimov creates in this series. I have also read and enjoyed Sir Arthur C. Clarke's Rama series. Now I'm in the process of reading Tolkien's Lord of The Rings series (of which I have the books and will read them) and Terry Pratchett's Discword series (of which I only have part of the books, due to the fact that they haven't yet been translated in Romanian, and the English version is not available in libraries. I have them all as audio-books, but it will take me a while to listen to all the 11 Gigabytes). [stvasile]
Hi Bookreadermom, you could call it either a series or a trilogy but one of favourites would be the 'North and South' books by John Jakes set in the American Civil war, they were a really good read and covered many aspects of the age. I learnt quite a lot of odd historical facts from them which I had previously been unaware of and some of the characters were particularly well drawn, with the evil Bent standing out the most for me. [thea09]
'North and South',awesome! There is no reason to suspect that N&S is one of most wonderful books. Actually, first i was attractived by its movis, and could not help seeking for book. Well, like most of people who once read this book,i was sweet on it. [smilelight]
Hello there, I am a huge huge fan of Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes. The Stephanie Plum series is great. It is an awesome drama comedy series. I also enjoy the author Christiane Heagan. Very good thrillers. At some point I would like to read The Lord Of The Rings Series, I have seen all the movies and own them I jsut have not gotten around to the books yet. [mnk202]
My favorite series is the Dresden series by Jim Butcher. It's a fairly long series and is still ongoing, but it's so good. [deathspectacular]
Although I have read a lot of books, I have not read very many series. I have read the Chronicles of Narnia.I did work on the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries when i was a teenager. I also have read one Beverly Lewis short series about the Amish lifestyle.I don't think I have any one "favorite." [macdingolinger]
i heard the BBC movies were great, but I never saw them. I have however seen the two newer ones and enjoyed both a great deal!! [macdingolinger]
love the whole 'Narnia' series by CS Lewis, which I have read over and over again since childhood. I sometimes pick out a favourite and read it, but its great if you read the whole series in order. I am a big 'Whovian' - a Doctor Who fan, so I read those, both the older 'classic' series ones and 'New Who'. Also have some of the Torchwood books. For a bit of chick lit, I love the 'Shopaholic' series by Sophie Kinsella. If you have seen the movie, this was NOT a good representation of the books! Someone else mentioned Beverly Lewis, who writes about the Amish - I have read quite a few of hers, and also like Janette Oke. I got into her during the first five months I was married - we lived for that time in an apartment owned by someone from our church, and she had a whole bookcase of them. I couldn't work during that time due to visa issues *I moved from England to America) and those books got me through a lot of days - they were often about a woman moving into a very different situation and having to make her home in it, which, though I wasn't quite a pioneer woman moving out west, I kind of related to! [EnglishTeaDuck]
I love fantasy series. My favourites include Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Terry Pratchet's Disc World, Robin Hobb's Farseer, Tawny Man and Liveship Traders,Jennifer Fallon's Hythrun Chronicles and Demon Child, and David Eddings Belgariad and Malloreon. My top favourite is Katharine Kerr's Deverry series. There is about 13 books so far with the last one due out in November. I can't wait. Reading this series has taught me a valuable lesson. NEVER START A SERIES BEFORE IT IS COMPLETE. The wait between novels was hard, especially the five years that she was ill. [ttssmith]
It's been so long between books for me that she actually slipped my mind, thanks for reminding me. After Pratchett, Kerr and McCaffrey. Lash [grandpa_lash]
I read a lot but have actually never read many series. I've been told that the harry Potter books are good. I did read Glass and the series...awesome read. I read 2 of the twilight series which was ok reading. Flowers in the attic was probably the series that I still would go back and read again. [sid556]
hi bookreadermom08 Yes I love sue Graftons alphabet series'with 'Kinsey Milhone as the heroine private eye who is really fun to read about. She is believeable with flaws like a real person, and bright, and savy and each book is differnt and so exciting.I am'a mystery book buff myself. [Hatley]
Lovely topic! I read Christine Feehan. Nice books there. Have you read the Drake sister series. Love those too. Sherrilyn kenyon too, a few. My favorite series would be kresley cole's immortal's after dark series. Just plain chocolate books, l.o.v.e them. Also Gaelan Foley has some good books too. And darker stuff; black dagger brotherhood. You should try reading Kresley Cole's series. [dex1007]
I'm have not read a lot of series. The only series I have complete reading is the Harry Potter series. But I am reading now the book series of Fablehaven by Brandon Mull. I have read the book 2, and I am reading the book 3, but I have not read the book one yet. I think I have also read the early books of Artemis Fowl. [richiem]
gee, it would either be the Dragon books by Anne McCaffrey or the Serra-ed Edge books by Mercedes Lackey tho I'm fond of her Valdemar books too... of course I love the Navajo mysteries by Tony Hillermann and the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich... Heck, I even like Ellis Peter's Brother Cadfield books, I like series actually... [ElicBxn]
As many others have commented, the Harry Potter series is excellent. I can also highly recommend the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman and the Bartimaeus books (The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye and Ptolemy's Gate) by Jonathan Stroud. The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis are excellent and I have re-read Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series more than once. When I was a lot younger I enjoyed the Famous Five books by Enid Blyton. [magickat]
I stopped reading series a long time ago. When I was a kid, I read all of Enid Blyton's Secret Seven, The Famous Five series and the Mystery series. Then I read all the James Bond Books written by Ian Fleming. Lately, I have read the 'Da Vinci Code'. I have not read 'Angels and Demons' or 'Digital Fortress'. I do not have much time these days and so reading books in series is remote. [jonjee0203]
I have read Christine Feehan's three series...the Drake Sisters (Loved them), the GhodtWalker series (also loved them), and the Dark Series, *(Loved them too!) I love reading series...it is the best when there is a series like the above that gets you involved and wanting more. I love reading series that involve brothers or sisters.... Cait London - three sisters who have paranormal powers - At the Edge, A Stranger's Touch, and For Her Eyes Only Sherryl Woods - Trinity Harbor, Chesapeake Shores, Sweet Magnolias Linda Lael Miller - Montana Creeds series (Three yummy brothers), The McKettrick series, and many others that are great Joan Johnston - The Bitter Creek series Diana Palmer - Long, Tall Texans series Susan Wiggs - The Lakeshore Chronicles Robyn Carr - Virgin River series, Grace River Valley Series Susan Mallery - Lone Star Sisters, Buchanan series, The Marcelli series And there are so many more....but every time that I read a series, they tend to become my favorites....so I have a lot that are favorites. But my true favorites are the Drake Sisters. Love that series the most..... [bookfan5555]
OOPs...I meant GhostWalkers...fingers did their usual walking.....lol [bookfan5555]
Well, when I was young I read a lot of The Baby Sitters' Club and the Sweet Valley High series. And, a lot of other kid series books. More recently I've read the whole Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. Which was pretty good, although the ending disappointed me. There's also the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie R King. There's sometimes a few years between the release of each book and I eagerly wait for the next one. [Angelwriter]
My favourite bok of all time is The Lord Of The Rings! I do not know if this can be classified as a series, but there was The Hobbit first and then the main story is released in three books as well as one big one! The other favourite of mine is also very popular with loads of others here and is of course the Harry Potter series! These books are brilliant! I have just finished the fifth one in the series, but my wife and my daughter have read the complete series a number of times! We love Harry Potter in our house!!! happy [RawBill1]
Hi,My favorite series is Dee Hendersons The Mallory Family. There are 6 or 7 books in this. They were all raised together in an orphange and consider each other family. One is FBI,one is fireman, one is CIA,one works for the U.S. Govt, these are mysteries and are very well written, the kind of book you do not want to put down!! I was sad when the series was ended. [arcticwolf]
I have just finished up to the latest of the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series. They have been quite enligntening to say the least. Then, for a while, I was very much into the Left Behind series very riveting to say the least. There were a series of books by Kimberla Lawson Roby dealing with a certain preacher man, the Rev Black; most of her books dealt with him; anyway, I read her books pretty faithfully. [Savvynlady]
My faviourit book series is James Hadly chase books. [bhargavoza]
It would be, without doubt or hesitation, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, still going strong. I can't wait for the latest book to be available, Unseen Academicals. The books are political satire in a vaguely science fiction setting, with some very funny English humour, patches of real wisdom, and some very funny puns. The characters are marvelous, if somewhat unreal - but then, this is satirical fantasy, who needs real. No subject is sacrosanct, and his depictions of religious inventiveness and political pragmatism are priceless. Lash [grandpa_lash]
I should also mention two series I am reading through at the moment, both medieval mysteries. Kate Sedley's Roger the Chapman series and Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma. Both we have found most enjoyable. Now the memory is working, how could I leave out the Rebus books by Ian Rankin. And there are the three series I remembered while going through the other responses, Katherine Kerr's Deverry series, Anne McCaffrey's Pern series, and Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series. My partner and I prefer series to singles, so we read a lot of them lol. I won't keep going, I could probably mention another five or six the we think are quite good. Harry Potter is an obvious one I missed out. Reginald Hill's Dalziell and Pascoe, Carol O'Connells' Mallory series, we're quite enjoying J. D Robb's (Nora Roberts) Eve Dallas "In Death" series, really liked Isobel Carmody's Obernewton books, and ......... Lash [grandpa_lash]
I love Perry Mason's Mystery books but I can't find them in the local library. When I was in high school I loved Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. Currently I don't have any series in my library because I got hooked with other stuff to read and cross stitching and mylotting. [Jemina]
At first thought, I'd HAVE to say my ALL time FAVORITE series is the Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich. I LOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEE IT!!!!!!!! It has ALL my favorite things all put into one easy read! once I actually gave it thought, I'd add the Reining Cats & Dogs series by Cynthia Baxter, it's a great mystery series with just enough humor to it. And of COURSE, the Twilight Saga. I just started reading Harry Potter. I've seen all the movies out so I started reading the books. I know they're kid's books but they're still good. Oh, and also, last night, my 9 year old came home with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I know there's multiples of those out, so that'd be considered a series, right? Well, I read it and it was ALSO great! I'm a writer so I figured if I read multiple genres, I could find the perfect genre for me, that's why I read kids books and adults books... BUT, back to square one, my FAVORITE is from Janet Evanovich! Fran429 [fran429]
Wow, when I first saw this I thought of one right off the bat, but then I started thinking of others!! The Kent Family Chronicles - John Jakes The Mayfair Witches - Ann Rice Outlander Series - Diana Gabaldon The Gunslinger - Stephen King The Green Mile - Stephen King Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones that come to mind quickly. [reinydawn]
I love reading detective novels, and there are quite a few series of those around. Particular favourites are: Colin Dexter - Inspector Morse Reginald Hill - Dalziel & Pascoe W. J. Burley - Wycliffe Quintin Jardine - Bob Skinner and Oz Blackstone Anne Perry - William Pitt (Victorian detective) Anne Granger - Mitchell and Markby Caroline Graham - Inspector Barnaby Lee Child - Jack Reacher I also enjoy historical fiction and family sagas, such as: Winston Graham - Poldark Cynthia Harrod Eagles - The Morland Dynasty Mary Jane Staples - The Adams Family (No, not that Adams family - this one is set in London's East End) I love all sorts of books, but series give you the chance to really get to know the central characters. [Sandra1952]
