For me it all started when I was very young and my mom is a library committe president. At that time I used to go along with my mother to library. Initially I used to read only childrens magazines. Once when I was about 10 years old, my mother asked me to get a new novel for her from the library. When I was returning back from library, I just happened to open and read first few pages of the book. It got me so obsessed that the next day when I was supposed to return the book, I just sat under a tree and finished it offlol. From then on I read each and every book that comes to my hands from first to last.
So do you remamber how it all started for you?

When I was a kid we used to go to my grandparent's every Sunday and I was the only girl so the boys weren't any fun to hang out with and I got bored pretty fast. So, I would read the week's worth of newspapers that were stacked up in the den and I also read the Reader's Digest. I used to get books from the school library when I was in elementary school and from the local library when I was old enough to walk there by myself. I read a lot as a teenager but, as marriage and raising children came along, I found myself reading less and less. I still enjoy reading when I can find the time but that still doesn't happen too often even though the kids are grown now. [spalladino]
Books are a companion to lonely souls right [pkraj111]
Maybe when I read my first "real" book, most propably it was fantasy or horror. Something like that anyway. I was about 7 then... Not got a clue about what the book was, maybe Dracula or Frankenstein, something like that anyway. [lronMaiden]
Hi Iron Maiden, My first horror novel is Frankenstein. [pkraj111]
I can remember the first proper book I read as a child, it was called Just Nuffin and was written by a man called Colin Dan! I really enjoyed it and can remember reading it over and over again! I still have that very same book and it's all dog eared and tatty! I have had my head stuck in a book ever since I read that first one though!! Happy mylotting xx [Munchkin547]
I started reading at a very young age myself and eventually amassed well over two and a half thousand books! Thanks to the internet and computers in general though, I don't read anywhere near as much as I used to. I remember one of the first "serious" books I ever read was "Among the Elephants"; I don't recall who wrote it but it was non-fiction and I even went as far as to handwrite out the first few pages as well! lol. But my first ever books were more than likely Beatrix Potter books like Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck and the other characters..... I had the whole collection and used to get in trouble when I was around three years old because I used to throw them off the balcony onto the metal roof at the base of our apartment building! It was because I liked the sound it made when the books hit the metal; but then again, maybe I was just a very young critic! lol. Nah..... They were good books that I enjoyed very much as a child! I read quite a bit when I was younger but I didn't really get hooked until I was 15 years old and a freshman in high school. My last period study hall was when I discovered Stephen King. Living in central Maine at the time, Stephen King was a big deal. It was easy getting into the stories and imagaining them happening right around the corner (many of them did). That has culminated in a large collection of Stephen King works which includes just about every novel and short story among many others. Though I love reading, a library card in my new town should be my new best friend as moving those books is a pain in the butt. :-) [Fryediddy]
I think I always enjoyed being read to as a young child. I think I really got hooked on reading though when I got Dr. Seuss books as a small child. I really liked those alot and spent alot of time reading after that. I loved my Dr. Seusss. My favoirite was Go Dog Go because all of the dogs seemed to be having such a great time at the end of the book. [snowy22315]
I have loved to read ever since I first learned how to read when I was 4 years old. [kellys3ps]
My father inspired me a lot to go through all sorts of books. He used to bring books from Office library and we did not take it long to finish them. Later on, when we were in our 4th/5th Standard, we got membership in a local library. Onwards I was associated with different libraries and I used to read lots of books. [nilzerous1]
Hi, PK. When I was a kid, my sister and I used to go to the library and check out several books at a time. I remember not reading all of them. Now I wish that I had. I really didn't get "hooked" to reading until my adult years. Over the last several years, I have read enough books to start a small library. I have been reading biographies, books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, James Herriot, Stephen King, Beverly Lewis, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, and several others. For awhile, I would read everyday for months. The I won't read much of anything for awhile. And then I would start up reading for months again. That has been the pattern for me. For the next 8 or 9 months, I will be reading mostly textbooks for the classes that I will be taking at the local junior college. I'm going to get my Associate in General Studies with emphasis in music. I'm also going to get a Web Design Certificate. I will have both of those next spring!!happy [bluerubymoon53]
Thanks for the response and all the best for your future [pkraj111]
i think i started reading once i can read. its when i was a 1st grader. i am the last son in my family, so i used to read my elder brother and sisters' books, even their text book lol in that time i lived in a country village. library sounds like a place on other planet lol moreover our economical condition was not so good that books sounds like a luxurious stuff for us. once i found a used children magazine being thrown, and i took it. it's like a holy book (i mean holy magazine) for me. i read it several times, so that almost every single letter on the magazine i had read. fortunately now i can easily find library, even i can buy books using my own money. [sutanhartanto]
Except for unavailable library, rest of the story can be mine. I too can't afford books at that time, so relied mostly on library for books [pkraj111]
As for me, it all started with a comic book, I guess this thing is quite normal for children. It so happened that my classroom is situated near the library. To unleash my boredom I go there for a little entertainment. It has been my daily routine until such time I fell in love with reading. [JannaLee]
When I was a child my parents used to buy me what we called Albums at Christmastime. These were large hardcover books with games and comics and short stories which I thought were quite good. I read stories about the wild west, buccaneers, soldiers and, I guess, that is what did it. [Bluepatch]
Hello pkraj111 I can't remember when I became hooked on reading, but I do know that it was before I started school. My parents turned me on to reading and I never looked back. [Transdisc]
For me it is different. Sometimes I can't stop reading and sometimes I really don't want to look at a book. I read more in the winter cause I am stuck int he house more. [dani27]
Well it all stared from i was very young also. Mom my likes to read and i think i inherit it from her.Once when i was 13 years old i went to spend holiday with my aunt and i am telling you i read every book in the house.so it all stared from i was young. [kristy4]
I used to read all the time as a child and teen . I was always in the library or @ home reading. I have no clue as to why I used to love to read so much. And at this point in time, I say used to read because I haven't been reading as much as I used to. I guess I've replaced them reading with journals. I'm hoping to get back into books the way I used to be. [mrsgoodygoody00]
There seems to be a common theme here that many of us read because our parents did. I was always well supplied with books. I remember reading Ladybird books to myself at five and progressing on to Enid Blyton and Francis Hodgeson Burnett. I never realised before how well my mother encouraged me by just keeping books around. [MoonJumpingCow]
I remember when I was 5 my mom bought me Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I remember that was my first story book and I read it along with other classic fairy tales. We had a lot of books in the house because my parents believed that reading is very important. When I was 7 as geeky as it may sound. I started reading the whole 19+ volumes of Children's Encyclopedia Britannica. I never got tired reading them and soon they were calling me a walking encyclopedia. When I'm at school I borrowed a lot of Ladybird Classics for kids and there I discovered my love for literature too. [magojordan]
happyHi there! When I was still a baby my parents went abroad and were very fortunate to buy the whole series of Green Eggs and Ham by the famous Dr. Zeuss so I grew up with a lot of books already. My mom is also a former teacher so she knows reading is important. I was in my kindergarten years when I got fond of reading. I don't go out too much and reading books is my playing time. I would even invite my friends and pose as a librarian hehe and I let them read all my books. My mom kept buying me story books even when I was becoming a teenager so my lovewub for reading just kept growing more. Until now mom buys me books every now and then and I love it.wink [iskayz]
i was hooked to reading from childhood. i can';t remember. may be from early age when i was too young. I just started to read.I used to hide myself and read books for whole afternoon. it is my passion. [subha12]
My mother always read to my brother and I, and I always loved a good story, so I have naturally always been into reading. [rogue13xmen13]
I can't really remmeber how I started. I must have been interested in books since young. I know my parents tell me the story. When I was a little over a year old, I will pretend to read the newspaper, babbling at each page. They told me that if I spot a book or newspaper, I will start to babble at each page before putting it away. lol [SydneyHazelton]
hi there... how cute... i just can imagine...:-) happy mylotting! [shiloh_222]
I started reading books when the Harry Potter book release. My aunty loves reading books and I always saw her smiling when she read harry potter book. Sometimes she tells me about what the story all about but she didn't let it end she say that why I didn't read the book so I can understand what the story all about. I'm a lazy person when it comes to reading a book. But the excitement to know what happen in that story makes me start to read it. The funny thing even I'm hungry I didn't stop reading it till I know what will happen in the next chapter. [angeltrhix]
I love to read books, novels, magazines anything that I can grab.It is kind of interest. It is my hobby too.It all started at very young age.We have collection of some books at home.Nobody reads it.One day,my mom left it open. She forgot to lock the cupboard.I picked one book,it was something called "World famous Mysteries",I read for a while and find it interesting, other day,I asked my mom to leave some of the books outside, so that I can read them too.Since then I love reading. It is not necessary for me that the book should only be of my interest. If I am travelling alone, this is my only companionhappy [brisk123]
I read my first book when I was nine years old. It was a Hardy Boys novel, and I remember enjoying it so much. After that, the craze developed, and in those days, I used to literally devour six to seven books per day. My childhood favorites were Enid Blyton, Nancy Drew, and Hardy Boys. And my father used to bring "Tinkle" magazines for me, which I used to enjoy. I still remember the Amar Chitra Katha comics. Wow, those were the days!! Cheers and thanks for this lovely discussion [positiveminded1977]
I don't know how old I was, but I have a clear memory of reading a book by myself for the first time. I was on my own in an upstairs room and I found a Noddy book by Enid Blyton. My parents often read these to me, and I opened it and started to read the words. Before I knew it I had got to the end of the story - it was a short book, but for someone who had never read anything from start to finish it was a great achievement. Since that day I've never stopped reading books! [paid2write]
A very similar experience to mine. Thanks for response. Keep reading [pkraj111]
i remember that was from 10 years ago, i applied two library cards which helped me a lot and by self-teaching for over 10 continuous years, i become an experienced and skilled teacher. thanks for those books. [gabbana]
When I was 7 years old, my dad went to the city to work; he would return monthly to see us. On one of these visits, he bought me a book - Treasure Island. From then, I learned about the adventures and enjoyment in books. Dad nurtured my love in books by buying me more books - I am very thankful to him for that. It was one of the greatest gifts in my life! [lazeebee]
hi there... i love reading when i was young. i was the only child for seven years so i dont have any playmate or anyone to talk so books and i became friends fast... hehehehe.. until now, i still love reading and i find it very restful. if i am tired or needs to unwind, i either grab a book or read online... just as long as i am reading and reading... heheheheh...happy mylotting! ~ shiloh [shiloh_222]
Yes my school use to encourage us to go visit the library and from there I fell in love with reading and still to this day I love reading. [gtdonna]
I still remember that day when i get hooked to reading. My interest in reading didn't start early. I got too busy with drawing, that i fail to see most of my mates are hooked in reading this girly novels. It started when i was in college, a friend of mine carried this novel by julie garwood, and i saw her she keeps smiling. I found myself smiling back. It got me interested and i asked her if i could borrow it. Since then, i got full of julie garwoods books! LOL [sassyangelee]
I was hooked from birth, my family were always great readers and still are. My kids are all readers but I don't know how my Grandkids are doing. Keep it up there are worse addictions. [savypat]
I remember reading when I was young, and since then I loved books. I also liked reading online since I was 12 when I first got onto the computer and started chatting in chat rooms for kids my age back then.It also helped with my spelling in school so I got better grades since reading and writing online, needless to say I'm 23 now and still love reading a good book by Anne Rice or The person who writes Harry Potter books to romances. [lira23]
I don't know if you know a "comic-strip type picture story book" in China, which named "lian huan hua" in chinese, like a kind of comic. It is easy for children to finish it, and you just needn't to know the words. At my age, children always grow up with that kind of books. I think that must be the start of my reading journey. [xplp211]
i was brought up by my dad to love reading in fact he made sure we read almost anything except some insane stuffs, but anything from novel to newspapers and then school work will do so i had the habit inculcated in me right from my early growing up days [BYOLA2871]
As I remember on when is the time that I got hooked on reading a book is that when my Mother would always ask me to read every night to increase my reading and when I was in grade three approximately I am 8 to 9 years old and when alone I do read and forgot sometimes my household chores...... [iyah10]
It seems like I have always been able to read. I don't remember learning but I do remember watching my father reading. I also remember reading the funnies in the news papers. I read so many comic books that I would dream in boxes. This was a great way to introduce myself to the classics. Of course I also read the horror ones two. Today I am happy to say my kids are readers. Now that I am retired I can allow myself the pleasure of staying with a book until I finish it. [patms1]
PS, I can even remember the first adult book I read when I was 12 years old. It was Olson and Martha Johnson In Africa [patms1]
I taught myself to read when I was five. I had these aunts who used to bring me Little Golden Books whenever they visited and my parents read to me all the time. But I wanted to be able to read them myself, and at that time there was no kindergarten in my rural town, so I taught myself. I've been hooked ever since. [rhettaa]
Hi pkraj, I got hooked when I was very young as well. My parents encouraged me to read, and I was soon caught up in the magic. Blessings. [Pose123]
I got hooked when I was very young. I spent alot of time in the school library. I was sort of one of those little "loner" kids, didn't have alot of friends, and I wasn't part of any click or social scene. So I read. Alot. I got lost in the books I read. The thicker the book, the better. The smaller the print, the better. I read all those Black Stallion books, those Black Beauty books, The Bounty Trilogy, Little Women, Charlotte's Web, Bambi books, lots more. I grew up in a "dysfuntional" family, as well, and we had no TV's or TV's that didn't work properly, so I just read all the time. I loved the library, spent alot of time there. [Makena1968]
I don't remember when I first got hooked on reading, but I must have been very young. We lived out in the country. There was my parents, my two younger brothers, and me. My brothers were so close together in age that most people thought they were twins. They had each other, and I had nobody. Books were my only friends. [bellis716]
When I was young, I remember liking Enid Blyton books and reading the wishing chair books and the Magic Far Away tree books. I used to have holidays at my grandparents and they would have lots of books that my mother and her brother and sisters had when they were children. I used to spend a lot of time reading there - they had lots of Famous Five and Secret Seven books. Plus I also read "The Naughtiest girl books" and "Jill's Riding School Books". When I was a little older I think I graduated to the "Nancy Drew" series. Hopefully now my tastes aren't quite this shallow! And I mean what must Enid Blyton have been taking to write the Magic Far Away Tree books? Maybe I should have a look at one of those again, now I am older? [vegegirl]
I remember. My father was a not nice father. Books were a different world in which to dwell which was far superior to the real one. I loved books. I loved imagining all sorts of different places. I still do. [DaddyOfTheRose]
I've been reading for as long as I can remember. I've always been a voracious reader since I was very little. In fact, that's all that I loved to do while growing up (not that it has changed much now except for the lack of time). I remember reading a book a day when I was in middle school and high school. [SViswan]
