When you grab the newspaper - which section do you turn to to read first?
Or do you read from front page to back in order.
I know a lot of people will go right to the obituary and birth announcements -
Others go directly to the classifieds to look at homes/jobs/garage sales.
Myself, I tend to start on page two with the editorials first - then announcements...I like to move about a bit :)

responses and comments:
Since I live in an outside county of a big city I usually page to our "local" section as the front page to me isn't anything more than what's been said on the news. And the "local" section for our area is more focused on things happening here rather than in the nearby "big city" [3SnuggleBunnies]
I am sure I would do the same thing! [Modestah]
the first page i open is the comics section, its what i look and read first most of the time. then i check the celebrity news... see what's the new gossip on celebrities' lives... lolwhistle then i read the headlines, all the way to the back. after that i go look for the crossword puzzles if there is one. [jayrene]
what's a T!? confused [jayrene]
I write for a newspaper and have for most of my adult life. My routine in the morning is to read as many online editions as I can. It shows me what's going on around the country and it also shows me different writing styles in covering stories and making them read well that perhaps I can adapt into my style of writing. I've been told I have a style that says this is my story and they know I wrote it just by reading the tag line in the online directory. I like putting my style into my stories, which does not make me a reporter as much as it makes me a story teller. And as much as I'm contributing to the eventual death of the "paper" newspaper by doing this, I seldom look at a hard copy of the paper, even my own. The future of news is online. I'll start off the day with USA Today, and there go to Life first, then Sports, then Weather and then finally to News. I read papers out of New York, Washington, Cincinnati, Miami, Ft. Wayne, Chicago, LA, and several community papers in Georgia. Some I'll stop and read and some I'll just skim over, depending on my mood or how much time I have. Today I have tons of time so I've read lots this morning. [ORyansBelt2012]
that is a lot of reading... I think it would give me a headache to read so much online. Good for you to be so devoted to your craft. [Modestah]
The front page first. When I see it, I can already say if the newspaper will be interesting or boring today. Then the second page to convince myself that I was right.lolAnd the back page where I can read quickly some funny stuff.Sometimes I go back and read everything that seems interesting to me,except local sport news. [silvercoin]
lol @ the second page to see if you were right! I also skip over the sports. [Modestah]
I just go from cover to cover. First the headlines and later I read the paper starting with local news, then international, economy, society and culture. I hardly pay any attention to sports and often I don't open that tab. Depending on the newspaper I spend more or less time with the editorials which are always in the middle. [overwings]
interesting, I have only ever seen editorials on page 2. [Modestah]
i read a newspaper every day, i like to read about current affairs and sport. i always start at the back and read the sports pages, mainly the football (soccer) pages. i then continue through the paper until i reach the middle than i read from the front to the middle. i don't know why but i've always read a newspaper like this and a lot of men seem to do the same. [robert67]
you must like balance - from both ends to the middle. that must be difficult when you read the tail end of an article on page 13 that was continued from page 5 :) [Modestah]
i always read comments on the newspapers, ans then make my own comment. this is ggd way to help me improve my english. the newspaper i often read id China Daily, which is considered as one of the most authority newspapers in China. i think the articles are such good as it is a good tool to help students! [wangyanping]
making your own comments - is this an online newspaper? [Modestah]
I usually read the headlines first. From there, I go to the editorials and then to sports. I usually go to the classified ads the last.happy [jpso138]
sounds like you got your routine down patt. [Modestah]
Hi modestah I like to start from the last page , where -in my country - the hot columns exist and then I go back till I reach the first page . I also like to read the cultural section , I like it so much . have a good time [YazEid]
it appears that a lot of people like to start at the back and work their ways forward. [Modestah]
When im reading a news paper i started to read first the ads section or the advertisement. I always looking for a better available jobs that was post. Im hoping to find a reliable salary cause at the moment i do not have good jobs. Its not enough for me and my family. Next i look the entertainment section. Read some cool gadgets and new technology products like digital camera, new mobile phones, computer or laptop, television (i preferred flat screen), motorcycle accesories and cool portable dvd player. I dont have much interest in politics and crime. I only read some crime if its story was interesting. Honestly reading is not my habbit. [jaysonjpa]
The classifieds is the priority when you are looking for a new/better job. I hope that you will soon be able to find that special job so that your family will be well taken care of. [Modestah]
Well I love devouring the newspaper and I do it in parts at different times of the day. The newspaper that we get here (The Telegraph, Calcutta) has three different sections...one is the main newspaper, another is the metro section which has updates on events in Calcutta and the other is an entertainment tabloid. So as you can understand, in the morning I dont have time to go thru all the sections in details. So I read the front and back pages, the metro section and run thru the entertainment part. Then at office (where we get the same paper) I go thru the mid pages during lunch hour. Usually I finish it then, but sometimes I want to read a particular article in detail, so I go thur that in the evening. [sudiptacallingu]
sounds like a very large paper and an all day event! I live in a very small town now and we only get the paper once a week - it is only a few pages thick (5-7) it takes very little effort to read the whole thing in a few minutes. :( [Modestah]
I read the news online, I don't read the "dead tree" editions anymore. One reason is I've got a town with a awesomely bad dead tree newspaper. Two, I just can't afford it. I generally surf randomly for news anyway...landing where the 'sea wind' takes me... [CraftyCorner]
Primary reason my butt went digital!lol [CraftyCorner]
happyI read a Local Inquirer from the Philippines and Normally I would read the Front Page first, then go to Style section, then Jobs and some ads. and finally, the lottery results which is posted in the second page.but when ever i am disappointed i would read the showbiz news to see the latest updates on the starshappy. [Mikaela_taz25]
maybe one day you will read your numbers on the lottery page! [Modestah]
When reading the newspaper, I usually read the titles first, then I will start to read the news about home and abroad because I care more about news, hot and current news that catches my attention. [williamjisir]
the title can either make or break the story... a bad title might have me skip right past the article. [Modestah]
I am into sports, so therefore i open the sports section first before anything else. The second part that i go to would actually be the front page so that i will know what went on with the world around me. then, i would go to the sections full of advertisements. I would like to know what products are around, and then i would go to the middle sections which are usually just complimentary. I would go to the classified ads before this, by the way, then i will go to the orbituaries, I save the bad news for last, but if it were my high school math teacher in the orbituary, i would definitely read it first. [safejunk]
you are the first person to reply sports page first - that surprises me, I thought more people would read this section first. [Modestah]
I go for the funny papers first. :0) Then the want ads. I was talking to my daughter the other day while sitting at the dining table and flipping through a new magazine...for some reason I start at the back, not sure why. [NettyB]
maybe you start at the back of a magazine out of habit from the way you read your newspapers? [Modestah]
I read the front page first, and then I go to the comics. When I was a little kid I would eat breakfast with my parents in the mornings while they read the paper. I would ask for the obituaries. I don't know if that is odd for a little kid, but that is what I did. Now days I don't ever read the obituaries. [AmbiePam]
that is interesting, I don't think I ever knew of a child interested in the obits. [Modestah]
I go to the state and metro section...then the front page section....then the business section...then Variety....and I don't bother with the sports page at all! Unless the Vikings are playing or have played and I don't know the outcome. [jillhill]
I rather skip over the sports pages myself. [Modestah]
I like reading the front page news with the Headlines first. Then I like to do the crossword puzzles and the word search. I would also like to read the Comic pages and the weather forecast too. Then I would look at the Classifieds last. [chunijole]
oh! I forgot all about the weather forcast! I like to read those right away as well - though ours is usually hidden somewhere amongst the television guide page and I have no interest in tv guides. [Modestah]
I am here in the philippines and its expencive to buy newspaper that why al0t of us tends to setTle to a cheaper source of news and it is called tabloid here,buT whenever get the chance to read a taBloid here i always lo0k first the entertainment section becAuse i l0ve showbiz news their al0t of gossip there,.I rather n0t to read the whole issue of taBloid it has alm0st negative news such as killings here and there. Etc [brokenwings24]
I am sorry that the newspapers are so expensive where you are. I hope that your tabloids provide you with a lot of happy news to share with your friends and family. [Modestah]
I start on the front page and just keep reading. I skim the sports page for Baltimore Ravens news. I do read the obituaries, also. I don't read the editorials or the classifieds. Reading the newspaper is like my cup of coffee in the morning. [kimbers867]
you are the first that reads in order from front to back! congratulations. you must be very orderly :) [Modestah]
i'd like to read the humo first, hehe and then financial news politcally,,and all of that cause i like readind so much it gives me alot of information about what happen in the world right now. [pansy45]
it is good to place humor as a priority in your life - so long as it is good humor :) [Modestah]
I normally start with the comic and gossip section, as I like to start my day feeling good and on a lighter note. I don't like to look at headlines where people are getting killed or someone gets raped and things like that. I then browse through the newspaper for important articles, both national and international. Finally, its the editorial section, as I love to read it :) [cbeee3]
it makes me think of the anne murray song that says "sure could use a little good news today" [Modestah]
I just go through the newspaper from the front page to the back without any specific ordering. Actually, editorials are the sections that I never read from the newspaper as I find them quite Prejudice from time to time. It is like some poison they are spreading into your mind without you knowing. So, I just skip those sections altogether and focus really on what has happened instead of what they think has happened. [faisai]
that is an interesting take on it. a lot of times, here, I find the editorials are from people with quite a similar mindset on things as myself... though the columns tend to be more subjective often times. [Modestah]
front to back usually. though sometimes i skip ahead to what we call the "busted" section. our newspaper prints the daily arrests and what not,and a lot of people look to see if anyone they know did something stupid. ..yea,it's a small town.lol [scarlet_woman]
they do that here once in awhile, usually the ones who got licences revoked for one reason or another.it's a feeding frenzy when one gets pulled because they only hand out so many. [scarlet_woman]
I look at the showbiz section then the comics.I love the cartoon satirical strips we calll pugad baboy.I also look at the headlines then the editorial page.I rarely look at the sports section [mimiang]
I barely skim the sports section myself - I might pause at a picture and read the caption. [Modestah]
I find most newspapers are filled with such alarming news these days, and most newspapers sensationalize it. I take a newspaper every day, I just tend to read the headlines from beginning to end, stopping if I find an article interesting, but that is an article that isn't about some tragedy that I can do nothing about anyway. happy - Derek [derek_a]
you are so right about the bad news and it is so sensationalized and rarely objective - it is difficult to know what to trust. you might have the better idea of how to go about reading the paper [Modestah]
I seldom read newspaper now.I often browse the news on the internet. When I was young I would like to go directly to sport section.I didn't like politics or economics at all.I concern different classifieds now. [bearound]
it is funny how our priorities change as we age. [Modestah]
Hi Modestah, well in my opinion it depends on two major factors. The first factor is what age I am. For example, really old people have a tendency to go to the obituaries to see if they or a friend died yesterday. At the opposite end of the scale young people are not interested in serious things. When I was small I was only interested in the cartoons. Nowadays which section I go to depends on the second factor, which is what day of the week it is. On Friday evenings and on weekend evenings I go to TV section. During the week I go to the business section in the mornings first. Finally, early on Saturdays and on Sundays I start with the sports section. Have a good weeekend. Umart [umart13]
You are welcome! We all need some chuckles here at MyLot :-) Well it is a fact of life that many old people look at the obituaries to see if anybody they know has died. Then at the funeral mass services, you see all these old people turn up at the back of the church, who nobody knows... It's kind of nice really. I think that they are lending support to the person who dies, so that when it is their time to go, that their funeral is not a lonely affair... Just another pyramid scheme and this time it does not involve Bernie Madoff. I have forgotten now where I got the idea of the people who look in the paper to see if they are dead themselves. It's probably a line from some comedian. [umart13]
I used to go only to the comic section. rasp It depends on any given day. A couple of times I had to go directly to the jobs section but most of the time I go from front to back. The editorials and columns are sure interesting to read as most of them give an in-depth report of something and so it's actually more sensible to read it first. [Jemina]
What?!shocked Well, I guess it's because you have more access to those stuff rather than just from the newspapers. I find the same is true with UK dailies. [Jemina]
I come front back to front. I have this strange habit maybe because I'm more inclined to read about sports or whatever. I start off from the last page and navigate myself to the first page. Most news channels cover the front page material round the clock so once glimpse of the TV at night gives all the front page info, but most of the time they restrict the sports news to only about an hour at some odd time of the day. Apart from that I sometimes jump start from the extra papers that have the crosswords and jumble and such puzzles because they are interesting that the news about the suicide of some local farmer. bournehappy [bournecaindelta]
your reasoning makes perfect sense to me [Modestah]
first when i grab a newspaper ..i will turn the page one after one to see all the picture on paper till the last page. the again go back to 1st page and look for all violance cases and horoscope. [DIRA7078]
picures are interesting to grab the attention [Modestah]
I turn to the entertainment page whenever I grab a newspaper. Then I'm gonna read the horoscope and comics section after that I can read the news. [sweetjacqs]
you are not alone with this method, it seems several people share the same interest with you. [Modestah]
I usually just read from front to back. I'm not really interested in sports so sometimes i just kinda skim over that part. [sweetgirl_k1]
sounds like an orderly manner of reading the paper [Modestah]
I tend to read the sports pages first and then flick through the main pages picking out articles which interest me rather than actually reading it cover to cover. Although with the paper I read it has sections which appear only on certain days like today it has an entrepreneural section and I usually go to these first on the days which interest me. [thedailyclick]
in a lot of places reading front to back entirely would be like a full time job the papers are so large. [Modestah]
I start at the beginning and move to the end, though I still skip over the stuff I don't like. I have run across some interesting things this way. I once ran across an add for a local photographing business that had a free children's portrait club. Every year on their birthday they could get a free 8x10 portrait done. I have gotten some professional free pictures of my children this way. And was actually able to put up some real portraits about my house because I read the paper in the way that I do! [dismalgrin]
no sense wasting time on the parts that are not interesting - and good on you for the free portraits! can't beat that. [Modestah]
I love reading the newspaper. Usually I read it in the mornings after my daily walk. I start from the front page and read the whole paper in order. I don't read everything in the paper, just the articles that catch my attention. I do look at the Obituaries too. I wish our paper had birth announcements, but they don't anymore. They do have something in the Sunday paper that is called "Celebrations," that has some birth announcements, wedding and anniversary announcements too. I also read the comic section, my horoscope and Dear Abbey. It's a great way to start my day with a cup of coffee and the newspaper. [AnneDePalma]
very organized - I can see how it is a nice routine for you - the walk, the coffee, the paper... [Modestah]
I read the newspaper from front to back, and I'll usually read every bit of it, I'll look closely at every page, I guess I don't want to miss out on any news..haha. [walijo2008]
lol sounds like, indeed, you do not want to be left out of what is going on. do you share the news with your friends? [Modestah]
Here in Jamaica our newspapers have cartoons depicting the topic of the day. It is just above the opinion section and next to the editorials, that's my favorite and the first thing I look forward to each day. Depending on my mood however, sometimes I start at the back - the sports section - and read to the front. I hate, though, when some columnists write their opinions and give no facts absolutely, that just piss me off! How about you? [Lezzdenada]
yes, it bothers me when no facts are given to support opinions - also. [Modestah]
I always read the front page first. Then the sports section. The business section and movies is the last. [reckon21]
:) it is good to be aware of oneself and how you do things. [Modestah]
I read the headlines first, when I grab a newspaper. Thereafter, I turn to sport page, which is my favourite page. I read all the sport news and then I turn to local/city news. If I have more time, I enjoying reading reviews and editorials to apprise myself of the latest happenings and views thereon. I love reading newspaper and as soon as it comes to my hand, I just grab it and try to read as early as possible. [dpk262006]
aren't you ambtious, lww! [Modestah]
I usually read the online version of our local paper. After all, it is free. I usually read the entertainment section 1st. That is to see if there are any kid events we can go to. [ersmommy1]
that is a good idea - plus saves on paper waste. I always have trouble navigating through the online version of ours. [Modestah]
Personally for me, it really depends on the mood I am in. A lot of times I would say I am reading the Front page to see if their is anything interesting there to read about. and then from there it usually is the Sports section, and then reading the Editorial area, and then the Cartoons, etc. I enjoy keeping up with the News on what is going on everywhere, so that is why I choose the Front page first for sure. [KrauseHome]
That is great that you are so interested in what is going on in other areas of the nation and world. [Modestah]
I read the lifestyles and pleasure(art, food, plce to see, etc) and entertainment(movies, gadgets, etc.) section. [bluescat]
sounds like you are a person who likes a good time. [Modestah]
I turn the page to classifieds adds. I like to know what available jobs in the city and other part time jobs. The second is I visit the comics section and entertainment. Third is the sports section and lifestyle section to the editorial and the news section. [grecychunny26]
the classifieds interest me too! [Modestah]
Hello Modestah, I always read from front page to back in order. I don't have a specific page to read first. I will just start reading with the headlines for front page and keep reading till the back page. Sometimes, I do skip pages that I have no interests to know like sports and financial news. [gr8life]
I always get frustrated when you have to go through a lot of pages to get the rest of an article that started on page 1 or 2. [Modestah]
I usually start with the section that contains the comics. Next, I read the metro to see what of interest in my section of town. This section also contains the obits. After scanning the business section, I read the front page and international news. [bellis716]
You have a point. The problem is, though, that few of today's funnies are funny. [bellis716]
Hi Modestah, When I read the papers, I go through them from start to end, in the given order. happy I usually save the entertainment section for the last and since it comes as a physically separate section, this is good enough for me. lol [lordwarwizard]
convenient that it is a separate paper! [Modestah]
