Which Books Were Your Favourites During Your Childhood And Younger Days

Hello friends, my parents always encouraged me to read good books, especially the 'classics' and bought for me a number of books during my young days.As a young kid i used to read cartoon comics but soon graduated to reading books. I read plenty of books but adventure stories were my most favourite amongst them.To name a few, "Twenty thousand leagues under the sea" by Jules Verne, " Kidnapped" by Robert Louis Stevenson, "The adventures of Robin hood", "Tarzan, the apeman" by Edgar Rice Burroughs were some of my most favourites. When i was a kid "Alice in Wonderland" and "Wizard of Oz" fascinated me.Later on as an adolescent "Sherlock Holmes", the famous detective series of "Perry Mason" held me spell bound.I also was fascinated by Greek mythology and my favourite was "Hercules".I still remember the Hollywood movie "Hercules Unchained" starring the former Mr Universe Steve Reeves in the title role.Share with me your favourite reading during your younger days, my friends.

In my younger days,i used to read comic books. I'd love reading adventure stories, heroes and villains, fairy tails, magic, ghost stories and any out of this world topics. When i went to school and I'm already late. I used to go to a store in the front of our school and I used to rent this magazine books. I also ate locally customized shakes or any food while reading. For me it is fun reading those topics. I found a lot of adventure on it, and I'm very much excited with those stories. Until today I still want those topics to read, but I quit reading those magazines because of its inability in our area. I now read several types of books that provides me with a lot of information regarding different matters. [varron]
Thanks for your comments. Yes reading is such fun and probably the best hobby tht one can have besides one can get tremendous knowledge from it. [veejay19]

Yes all these were our constant companions during our childhood and it is hard to give them away or dispose them off. Unfortunately in my case many of my books were borrowed from me and never returned.I miss them.thanks for your comment. [veejay19]

I love Archie Comics when I was young. I even read some of my Double Digest Archie books now and I am already 25 years old. lol. lol I was also fond of the Sweet Valley High Series, Nancy Drew, and The Hardy Boys during elementary school even if most of my friends during that time read those RL Stine books. Since I am such a scaredy cat, I did not read RL Stine and read teeny bopper novels instead. [lealuvy2j]
I too loved and enjoyed reading Archie comics and used to read them even when i was an adult.thanks for your response. [veejay19]

As a kid i grew up with books. My parents really encouraged me to read. My favorite were classics: the secret garden, little women... then I jumped to Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys... and there was Sweet Valley Twins/High and many more... [verabear]
I can understand your choice of books. Being a boy i used to read only those books which boys read like adventure books, thrillers, mysteries, detectives etc. Thanks for the comment. [veejay19]

Nancy Drew Mysteries, book about horses. I went to the library all the time and usually it was either a few Nancy Drews or a stack of book on horses. Some mythology as I grew older and then I started with the romance and true crime. They really took me over and I love a good historical romance. Oh, I read my share of comics too. Wore out my copy of 101 Dalmations, loved Superman. [celticeagle]
Oh yea! Black Beauty my mom read to me when I was a like four or five. [celticeagle]

I was addicted to Sweet Valley series, Sweet Dreams and Archie comics when I was younger. I consider them as my childhood friends. :-) I also read briefly the Nancy Drew series, Baby Sitters Club, Girl Talk and Fear Street. But what appealed to me the most are the Sweet Valley Twins and Friends. [arystine]
I hadn`t heard of any of these books except Archie which seems to be everyones favourite. Of course being a male my choice of reading would naturally be much different from a girls. Thanks for your response. [veejay19]

Reading books has been a hobby in our family. I remember we (my cousins) would spend the whole day just lazying around our room, reading books and swapping stories. We first got hooked to reading when our grandma gave us "A little Princess", then some of our aunts gave us Sweet Valley Twins paperback. That's when we officially became a bookworm. From Sweet Valley Twins, to SW High, to SW University. I remember the Bobsey Twins, Nancy Drew, Archie, R.L Stein. But the book that I will always treasure is "Little Women". I absolutely love it. [reeyaah7209]
Great reeyah. Reading and sharing is so much fun. Thanks for sharing your views. [veejay19]

I enjoyed reading as a child. I still do. My favorite books were always from Dr. Seuss. I also enjoyed the Little Housse books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. [sender621]

one of my favourite was the second book i read in my life, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Now when i think of it, it's not very child's book, it's quite sad. but i really liked it. the other one was not a famous one - When thehre was no man, a really lovely story of the evolution. fascinating one! after that there are just book and books and books. i can't name a favourite. i don;t think i can name 10 favourites either... [burgas4e]

Lately I found a compilation of all the issues of the comic book House of Mystery, and I was amazed I remembered each of the stories. That was really trippy. I couldn't put Lord of the Rings down, reading the last three books in a short period of time, probably less than a week. It was nothing I had ever experienced. The only other one I remember was a solve-it-yourself mystery book. Stories were told with clues hidden in the prose, and you had to solve the crime. Of course when I was really small, there were the Dr. Seuss books. [Qaeyious]

Till I was in class V, the junior library in our school could only supply comics and cartoons and Famous Five and Mallory Towers…so Enid Blyton was an all-time favourite (she still is) alongwith the comics of Phantom and Spiderman. Once in high school, we had plenty to choose from…even the comics were the more 'interesting' types of Archie and his girlfriends LOL but detectives were my favourite. Top of the list is of course Sherlock Holmes (my all time favourite) and then there was Agatha Christie, Poe and also the very kiddish ones like Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew or Alistair McLean…I loved them all…I devoured them, in fact. [sudiptacallingu]

hello, In my childhood i used to read cartoon comics..i dont remember but still i am having my comics and cartoon books with me, i have Bambi and cindrella and archies comics.. [shavvy]

I'm not fond of reading books during my childhood and younger days, but I found the best book in the whole world, that will help us in our entire life." The Holy Bible King James Version Old and New Testaments." Read Joshua 1:8, This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. [iris31]

I love reading books as much as you do veejay19 and when I was still a child I love reading classic books as well. I have read "Anne of Green Gables" by LM. Montgomery. I collected the series of mystery books of Nancy drew. I read "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott...even the other books after that. I do love reading books of Sweet Valley twins and Sweet Valley high but i'm not totally hooked on those type of stories. I do love comics, I love collecting Archie and Jughead...they are soo funny. [hapsicordable1]

One of the first books I ever read was a book called, The Valley of Adventure. I cannot remember who wrote it, but it was about a group of kids who wandered into this valley and encountered criminals and they were unable to get out of the valley because they were blocking their way. I also read many comic books after that. I had two older sisters who taught me to read before I started school.. happy - Derek [derek_a]

I absolutely adored the Goosebumps series when I was a child. I'd read as many different ones as I could get my hands on. When I couldn't find any new ones, I would re-read some of my favorites. I eventually grew out of them. Our schools gave us a few books for free once. I found my next set of favorites out of those. I went through an animal phase, I guess, because I loved Black Beauty, Lobo, and White Fang, though the latter was a bit hard for me to read at that age. Another book that stands out to me from my childhood is Haunted Sister. [Thunderll]

When I was a small child, I used to enjoy reading the Bernstein Bears. As I got older, my tastes changed obviously. Into more of comic books and science fiction type books. Along with some historical books, both the fictional type and the non fictional type. Of course, if the book was good, I was likely to at least read it if something about it caught my interest. [megamatt]

When I was in 5th - 6th grade I got so hook up with Jessica and Elizabeth series (The Twins). When I was in high school I go so fond of reading Reader's Digest and fiction and non- fiction novels. I still love reading until now and I go for suspense- thriller and also historical novels. I also love the pocketbooks/ novels of Nicholas Sparks, Robert Ludlum, Mrio Puzo, Paulo Coelho, and Dan Brown. [Ladyslipper]

i loved books about fairy tales and love stories. I love happy stories. i could feel that i am the lead character in the book. ^_^ And those stories give me hope in life. They just prove to us that no matter how tough the time is, there will always be happiness at the end. [chikahdorah]

when i was younger my favorite books to read was curious George and goose bumps [ErickJ]

When I was a child I loved the fairytales by the Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. I was grew up in the city where Hans Christian Andersen was born, I often visited his museum, and I read a lot of his fairytales. I also loved the stories by the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, and my favourite books were the ones about "Pippi Longstocking" and "Emil of Lonneberg". My grandmother read the stories aloud to me and we recorded it on a cassette tape that way I was able to listen to tape when I was alone. When I got older I started reading the stories on my own. [Porcospino]

back in my childhood days i was a fanatic of a marvel comic book and my favorite is wolverine..so, everytime its my mom salary i would demend her to buy one magazine for me and during my high school days i think my collection was put in a big box coz i dont have time to buy and read those marvel books because im very busy in schoool thats why i gave them to my nephew and my classmate who like to read it. [vince06]

In my childhood i was a active child ........ so i didn't read many books other than my school books.................... however the one's i read were mainly comic books.............. like "tintin" by herge................. and "asterix".............. [goodday007]

When I was very young I loved The Bobsey Twins series. Then, I read the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. A couple of books that I really loved were Black Beauty and Flicka. Actually, I read everything I could get my hands on, whether I understood it or not. [bellis716]

I'm only 19, but my favourite book when I was younger was Harry Potter, or even the Chronicals of Narnia. I really enjoyed The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe. Probably my favourite of all time. I also love to read though, but I could never read if it meant having to read it for school. I don't know why, I don't like reading books if I HAVE to read them. Has to be my own choice and on my own terms. [katisaurus]

I didnt like to read when I was in elementary but when I was in high school, my classmates always talk about stories that I am not familiar of and I felt left out because I couldnt relate so I started reading. I found mystery, fun and infatuation when I was reading "Hardy Boys", "Sweet Dreams" and "Nancy Drew". Now that I'm older, I realized how important reading is and I kinda regret I didnt read a lot of books before. If only, I think I would have been smarter...'cause I'm not. [p3ks626]

i have a elder sister who encouraged me to read when i was young and also it was her who made me fond of reading. i remembered when i was nine she even asked me to read "the making of a hero". it is a Chinese version and the only feeling i got was how could their name be so long and why their lifes were so much different from us. i didnot finish the book till now i still dno't finish it. then i just skip to short stories, swordsman fiction (a kind of literature only special in China)and romatic novels. [cassay60]

hello veejay, During my childhood days...i like reading comic books and fairy tale stories esp with good drawings. While during my adult times,i started reading adventure books and also detective stories. Now...i seldom read books,i prefer watching documentary movies. If i had time,i read "reader's digest" and Time Mag. I like documentary and true to life story books. Have a good weekend ahead dearhappy [jaiho2009]
Thanks jaiho and wish you the same.lol. [veejay19]

The never ending Cinderella story.. and im fan of mickey mouse short stories before. when im teenager i love collecting and reading sweetvalleyhigh.. but as of now i still love books but what i read most is not a fantasy anymore. I like reading self help books, the most practical and what i really need. [cindy27]
Yes liked sweet valley even if it was all about boys and rich kids. They sound like they had a lot of fun with their friends and it gave me a lifestyle to aspire to when I lived in the country. They did a lot of different things too. I also liked the saddle club, and jill stories because I was horse mad! [puppynut]

All of the above is all that I can say. happy I read all of the Tarzan books and also all of his Mars (Barsoom) and Venusian stories. It's mant years since I read eny of them, but I sill have all of the books on my shelves and someday I may re-read them all again. [jwfarrimond]
Yes, thats right, I read Jules Verne, (20,000 leagues under the sea, The First Men in the Moon, and Journey to the centre of the earth) and H. G. Wells "Time Machine* when I was still at at school and I think that eading them was what sparked off a life long love of Science Fiction and Fantasy, of which I have a large colletion of mostly paperback books most of which were bought during the 70's and many of which are now collectors items. I have a pretty large collection of SF magazines from the 60's and 70's as well, most of which I bought at the time. [jwfarrimond]

I read lots of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. I read any book about Native Americans that I could find. So mostly mysteries and how to live like a Native American (American Indian). I also read some biographies of different people like Helen Keller, Geronimo, etc. I looked up recipes in lots of cookbooks. Some cookbooks had stories in each chaper and I read those. I read magazines, too. Mostly "Better HOmes and Gardens" and "National Geographic." [writersedge]
When I useed to watch Dale Evens (spelling?) and Roy Rogers, I used to do that. When I used to watch Fess Parker as Daniel Boone, I used to make tracks into the woods in the mud and then walk backwards so that there was a trail in, but not back out again. Or walk on top of the stone wall in and out so no one could track me. Getting back to books. I used to like to go through cookbooks and cooking magazines with my Mom and make decide which recipes we were going to make and cook them. [writersedge]

during my school days, i really love Jose Rizal Books, his biographies...for all who do not know, jose rizal is the philippines' natioinal hero. [lezalga]

My favourite books when I was a child were Enid Blyton books. I started out reading her series on the Magic Faraway tree which had magical lands at the top of it which rotated around on clouds. I also had the Wishing Chair books which were about a flying chair that would take the children wherever they wished to go. happy I then progressed onto The Famous Five series in which I read every single book and also The secret Seven which I also read every book in the series. These were very popular and my daughter now has my remaining Famous Five and Secret Seven books and has read them herself. She enjoyed them, but has moved beyond them to the modern classics of the Harry Potter and Twilight series! happy [RawBill1]
My wife has read a lot of books on Indian religion and philosophy. Yogananda and the like. I have tried to read them, but they are way too deep for me. confused [RawBill1]

I too remember reading cartoon comics as these were purchased for us to read on train journeys. I remember reading Grimm's Fairy Tales and being delighted and shocked at the same time. This led me to search out other fairy tale books from the library. I have an idea I discovered the Narnia books when I was young but only read the first one as I could never find the others. I also loved the "William" books. I read all the required school reading books and as a teen fell in love with Mary Stewart. She writes action, adventure & romance stories set in little villages around Europe. I still read her today. [MsTickle]
My dad bought me Grimms fairy tales and also Hans Christian Anderson when i was around seven years old and i was completely fascinated by theose stories. I also loved Gullivers Travels and also Mark Twains books in which my fav character was Huckleberry Finn.Thanks. [veejay19]

...Hi there veejay, Hope you are doing well. My father was an avid reader and I inherited his interest in books. I remember reading a book one night and my parents cut the lights out for everybody to go to sleep, and I found a flashlight from somewhere and got under the covers to continue reading my book. I can't remember a lot of titles, but I just loved reading. Cinderella was a favorite story, the Three Muskateers, Robinson Crusoe. Books take you places, real and imaginery. I will always be a lover of books. Take care. [artistry]
Hi artistry, yeah those were the days my friend, we thought would never end...Reading was my passion and still is though the content has changed. I only read deep philosophy now. [veejay19]

I also have always loved books as A child One of my favorite book was The Sheperd of the Hills. I could loose my self in that story and still can [flowerpeople]

For me, the better question would be which books did I not like to read when I was a child. Seriously though, if someone put a book in front of me I would always read it. However, the ones that I remember being my favorites were all of the Baby Sitter's Club Books and I also really enjoyed some of the classics like Pollyanna and Anne of Green Gables. Being such an avid reader when I was younger also bred me into an avid reader as an adult. [dorannmwin]
Reading opens up the mind and takes you to exotic places you have never been but with your imagination you can create a world of you own.I don`t think a computer or the latest Kindle can ever take away the romance and satisfaction that a book can give.Just the feel of a book gives me a great pleasure. [veejay19]

I remember reading the Artemis Fowl series quite a bit but I would usually switch it up and read a lot of different books. I really liked fantasy and sci-fi and still do like those kinds of books. I also like to read nonfiction books now to learn new things. [jambi462]

I liked Watership Down and was a big fan of Archie comics , particularly Chalky. I even named my cat after him! Jonathan Livingston Seagull also hit a cord with a lot of people. It was very inspiring and about overcoming obstacles. I also liked the childhood cartoons a lot more compared to the violent ones of today. Being a hero was about dignity and loyalty and morals, not just violence and power. [puppynut]
hi puppynut ,during my childhood days, which is before you were born, we were encouraged to read mostly classics inorder to improve our English .Howeer i used to read comics and especially the cowboy Westerns and others too like Looney Tunes besides those i have mentioned.LOL. [veejay19]

Hmmm well I read a strange diversity of books when I was young. I read the bible and omar khayyam which were both considered to old for a child too read. My mother always used to say that I just liked the velvet feeling of the book but to this day I still remember Omar Khayyam's poetry. He was a great scholar and poet born 1048 AD and died 1131 AD in the country that is now called Iran. Of course I have only ever read a translation of his Rubaiyat. One of my favorites is "Ah make the most of what we yet may spend before we too into the dust descend; dust into dust and under dust to lie; without wine, without song, without singer, and without end." I have always thought that was such a sensible approach to life. lol Apart from that I read children's books such as the faraway tree and lots of ancient mythologies. I was always fascinated by ancient history and fantasy tales. I did not start reading detective fiction until I was an adult. [sharra1]
I have an open mind and read a great deal, although not as much as I did when younger. I spent a great deal of my life exploring many spiritual paths. [sharra1]

I have always been an avid reader since childhood. Just like nowadays, as a kid I used to read anything and everything from Walt Disney comic books to old classics and everything in between. I enjoyed 'Little Women' and the sequel 'Little Women have grown up' or something to that effect. I loved the book 'Pollyanna' and its sequel. I enjoyed Enid Blyton and the Nancy Drew mysteries. I would have loved Harry Potter if it had been written then! [paula27661]
I used to read Enid Blyton when i was young and was particularly fond of the William Brown series, which was very entertaining. The period of the books was World War 2 but i don`t recall the name of the author. [veejay19]

Hey friend, I also responded to this type of discussion before with the title 'What books did you read as a kid?' started by our myLotter friend, allyoftherain. In my childhood days, I was fond of fairy tales and cartoon books. During my younger days, those books you mentioned weren't available in Bangladesh. But we had the ones of our Bangladeshi writers. Among which 'Dosyu Bonhoor (Robber Bonhoor) by Romena Afaz, Kuasha (Fog) by Kazi Anwar Hossain, Masud Rana by Kazi Anwar Hossain etc. were my favourites. I am sorry, I'm so unfortunate to share your favourite readings in younger days. Good luck! [faridmadeabillion]
Hello mitra! Ami bhalo achhi! Tumi shareerikbhabe austho achho to? Though I couldn't read those books in the original version during my childhood days, but I was able to read them during my college life when their Bangla versions were available in Bangladesh published by Sheba Prokashani, Segunbagicha, Dhaka. This publication is still selling the Bangla versions of different masterpiece of other languages. Thanks for your suggestions to get them from Amazon but I'm so unfortunate to have been borne in a poor family. That's why I can't afford them right now. Thanks a lot feeling so friendly for me. [faridmadeabillion]

I didn't read much as a child, but then I discovered horse books. After that I discovered Science Fiction and have never looked back! [ElicBxn]
I think my first one was Arthur C. Clarke's Islands in the Sky or Robert Heinlein's Red Planet. My 3rd one was Andre Norton's Catseye - I loved it and read the rest of her books. [ElicBxn]

I loved to read when I was a kid, I would read anything I could get my hands on. I grew up in a rural area and so in the summertime we actually had a bookmobile that came every 2 weeks, I would check out the max (12 books). I remember reading "Boxcar Children" "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" series. "Nancy Drew" and "The Hardy Boys" series. I loved series books as I never wanted my characters to end. I have followed that in to adulthood also. As a teenager it was the "Flowers in the Attic" series. V.C. Andrews became one of my all time favorite authors. I much prefer to pick up a book in a series than to read a book that will end when I'm finished reading it. I think that the greatest gift that we give to our young people is showing them the gift of reading. As I always told my children when they were young, "Good readers make great leaders." Happy reading! [beaniefanatic13]
Okay I guess the links are still a glitch for mylot to fix, shockedwell hopefully once it's fixed the link will work and you can check it out. [beaniefanatic13]

My favorite books during my early age is that Florante and Laura. The history of Lam-ang a native hero in our province... It's inspire me because I learn that there is native hero in our ancestry. This are called "maingel" or "Hero" in English terms... [aerous]

For me, it's always been The Secret Garden. It later became a movie but the book is so much better. [libby2009]

I like reading fairy tale story every day when I was a child. [goodoldday]

When I was super young it was "Dr.Seuss books." Next, I got into the "Hardy Boys" and "BoxCar Children." When I was in my later years of Elementary School I started getting to the more intense books. I fell in love with Fantasy and Sci-Fi, and in fifth and sixth grade was always reading a book about "Redwall", or else the "Star Wars" series of novels. [danrunsfast614]

I have a collection of books I used to love reading called "The magic treehouse". Every story was an adventure for me and I just loved buying more and more to read. [universe2o6]
