for entertainment? to learn things?
i have to admit that i do it for both. i like the 'escapism' that some books can give you and i am also a huge history fanatic and i love to read about certain events in history. currently i am reading 2 books. one is canadian fiction, 'barameter rising' by hugh mclennen (its about the explosion in halifax in 1916) and a non fiction book on the civil war

I read for entertainment and to learn things. Right now I am reading three books. lol. One is fiction the other two are for study. [jennifercrowe]
I normally read for entertainment a bit of escapism its just nice to relax with an easy book and do nothing but relax, however reading now a days gives me a headache so its not so relaxing anymore! [kezabelle]
This is how I relax in the evenings. After supper I like to sit and read. I will often read until bedtime, so I'd better get all my work done before I sit down. Went to the library just last night, so I just started reading Sweet Caroline (fiction) and am also reading The Case For Christ (non-fiction). [caver1]
Most of my reading is fiction, I like to escape into a good book and enjoy the story, I read too much non-fiction when I was studying and yes it's always good to learn new things but when I need to relax I don't need to use heavy thinking, that is not relaxation, reading for me is Martina Cole and detective novels where I can loose myself into the plot. Yes I do love Harry Potter too, I have all the books and I never get tired of reading them all. [wolfie34]
I read for entertainment, and to learn things. I love science fiction, adventure, and mystery. I also love to read non-fiction Christianity books, and books were the hero is fighting against incredible odds, and every people and wins the girl as well. I love historical fiction and crime stories. I do not like literary fiction nor where the hero or heroine is introspective and finds himself or herself. I find that boring. And I do love books on the military and about scientific advancements. Of course, I do not have much time as I am working on a novel and I do like listening to audio books. Right now I am listening to "An Unsuitable Job for a Woman." [suspenseful]
Hi cher, I like reading, and reading is my hobby. I read for some information's or knowledge and not to pass time. Reading makes the man perfect. And I am wishing to be a perfect man. I don't read novels and stories these days.Earlier I used to read a lot of them. But now with the laptop in hand, there is thousands and thousands of articles I have to read.So I find no time to read novels and stories. I now read mainly on health oriented topics. At times I also read about money related topics. Happy mylotting. [muru1950]
Hey cher! I think that it is so great that you love to read and that you enjoy reading all types of books including those that are non fiction! It is wonderful sometimes to get into a book on something from history just for a change! There is nothing like enlightening the mind sometimes. You can never have enough knowledge! I have forgotten how much I love to read. I have been thinking about it alot lately because of discussions like yours that remind me of life before computers were around! I need to "take a page from your book" so to speak and turn off the computer and pick up a book! Thanks for that little added push that I needed! [Opal26]
I also read both for pleasure and education. Currently I am re-reading the Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. I do a lot of bible study and I really like fictional accounts of some of the bible characters. [wifeofharvey]
I read for lots of things, but probably for entertainment the most. I love to read, it is just my pastime. Sometimes I get so caught up in reading I don't know what time it is. I like fiction and nonfiction both are great. [megaalgos]
I read both for entertainment and for learning new thngs. Reading, I believe, is a sort of mental exercise and it gives a flip and boost to our mind. No other activity e.g. watching TV give so much enjoyment and satisfaction to me as 'reading'. If I am waiting somewhere, I try to keep a book/magzine handy so that I could utilize my precious time. I love to read all types of books/novels/magzines. [dpk262006]
Thanks for the best response. [dpk262006]
I read because of the many facets there are to reading. I'd pick up a book to read for entertainment when I get bored, and next thing I know, I'm not just amusing myself, but I am also learning about things and about myself, relating to the characters, gaining insight and information about situations, events and happenings I never would have gotten if it weren't for the book I was reading. After I've finished the book, there's this inexplicable satisfaction of having acquired another level of learning, exposure and understanding. I read because there's a whole new world in books - a world you don't realize is there or a world you are surprised to discover. I read because there are a lot of interesting characters in books - characters who are like the people you know, characters who are like you or nothing like you, characters who inspire you, characters you love, love to hate, hate to love or just hate. Books let you in the many views of life. Of course, nothing beats real life, but with books, you are exposed to some points of life that are new, foreign and peculiar. But most importantly, I read because reading is my solace, my escape, my comfort. There's nothing like curling up with a good book turning page after page after you've drank in the words, inhaled the scent of the pages and taken in the feelings, the thoughts, the story it has to tell and the lesson it has to share. I read because I like to read. I sometimes do it for learning purposes and sometimes I do it for fun and relaxation. But I always love to read. I also like to write. [bellaofchaos]
Saying that????.Tang and Song, litercay masterpiece, foreign literature,I love reading,as long as it is for their useful and worth reading a hundred times. [qq373109172]
i read for both the reasons..i rad textbooks and subject matter to learn something new and fiction and thrillers for entertainment...yeas i also like reading about historical events like wars that happened .. [djemba]
I do both. I love to read fiction, but I also love to learn more about subjects that interest me. I also sometimes have the benefit of learning things while reading for pleasure. For instance, I am currently reading a Grisham book that takes place in Italy, and there is a lot of Italian in it, so I am learning some Italian words. Also, whenever I am reading and I come across a word I don't know, I look it up, so I am always expanding my vocabulary. [Sillychick]
Though I don't consider myself a book worm (in fact I'm the college soccer captain!) but currently I'm reading 7 books including two novels, four medical text books and one local book. So I like to read for fun but mostly for knowledge. [fizanali]
cause i have a free time n i like to read. read can make me more know about knowledge [noniefam]
I read to learn things, for entertainment as well and also to escape from the things that bothers me...like when I read a good book, its as if I don't have worries or problems, I used my imagination to capture a beautiful scene as described by the author, I'm usually moved by the story in every book that I read...I laugh, cry, be amazed, get thrilled and sad sometimes, it's like watching movies. Sometimes I read also to kill the time, when I'm bored at work, It's really a way not to ruin the day. (^_^) [becdmd]
I read any and everything to keep my brain sharp and to keep me busy never know may go on one of those money making shows to make money. If you have the knoweledge I think that everyone should try to get one of those tv shows to make some money. I should prolly write a novel someday soon. Best of luck to all of you., [StarChild517]
ooh. nice. what kind of novel do you plan to write? fiction of non-fiction? [Ezpada008]
i like some myths and fiction. but now i dont read anything. im searching for something that make my interest into it. do anyone knows? but i read some short articles or comics with some humors and horrors just to entertain me and keep me busy for some of my vacant time. [Ezpada008]
I dont know why you choose this topic as why do you read books ? Mostly student read books just to pass the exam where as those who graduate from school or college they read the books for entertainment purpose. And if some one need any information in their life then they start to read books to learn what they dont know about......... [umeshthapa]
I agree with you"escapism" is the right word for the book addicts like me. I also love books which take me places that I would never otherwise get a chance to see and visit. Pus I never cease to admire the writer's ability to create a world with words. weave a story and take the imgination for a wild ride. Its a marvel to read a book and must be marvellous to be able to write so well. [mansha]
Those are great books. I read too autobiographies and all fiction genre.Sometimes I read historical books too , most especially about the world wars. That book about Halifax must be an interesting read. Happy mylotting and cheers. [Jenaisle]
I read for both reasons, though, I do tend to read for entertainmet more than to learn things. I guess when I was still in college I did more reading to learn and less for entertainment (I didn't really have much time to read for fun because of all the reading, research and homework I had to do for my classes). I tend to read a lot of mystery/suspense novels the most. They are a nice way to distract me from the 'real world' for a while. [kel1483]
I read primarily for entertainment purposes, but hey if i happen to learn something while i am at it, that just an added bonus. I enjoy the escapism as well and is the reason i read a lot of fantasy/paranormal books. Something you know is not real but its just fun to imagine for a little while that they are. [pheonixstar1982]
All through my teenage years I read to escape. Actually I think that is why I read so much as a child. I would read constantly, even getting into my closet at night with a flashlight when I was supposed to be in bed. Now I read because I'm interested in something. I don't read as much fiction, and I just love learning about things I've wondered about, and then grown to understand through a book. [AmbiePam]
I hardly read non-fiction for entertainment, as anything I have to read to learn was done during school/college time, and at work. I enjoy reading fiction, usually crime, murder mysteries and horror stories. It's more for relaxation and entertainment, as I tend to lose myself in the books and forget about the issues/problems at work. [lazeebee]
I read for escapism, entertainment, and to satisfy my curiosities, sometimes. Right now, I'm reading a nonfiction book by Jon Krakauer called, "Into Thin Air." It's about his climb of Mt. Everest (I think that's the mountain he was climbing). And I must say, it's a pretty incredible book. [PearlGrace]
of course for get to know something new ... what that we need and want to know and learn about something that really we love... get smart or better everyday... that way we need learn ... in everywhere, anyplace, everytime, anyday, everything, anything, for new information... for be someone and for be useful [dianni]
I read because I have to, not because it is assigned but because I need to read like I need to breath. I like just about everything although lately I have been reading young adult fiction. [okkidokitokki]
